Jeremy Lin Had an Awful Game Against the NBA’s Best Team. You Jumping Off the Bandwagon?
Yes, Jeremy Lin looked downright petrified against the Miami Heat. He was 1-for-11 shooting. He picked up his dribble early and often. He turned the ball over eight times. The pick-and-roll, which he had excelled running over the previous 11 games, never materialized. Mario Chalmers and Norris Cole took turns hounding Lin.
Linept blared the Post. He was Linvisible, according to the Daily News.
The Knicks were soundly beaten by the team with the NBA’s best record, 102-88. New York might have got within eight briefly in the second half, but Miami was in total control.
So what?
There’s no question right now, the Miami Heat are a better team than the Knicks. Carmelo (7-for-20, 19-points) has had virtually no time to get on the same page as Jeremy Lin and the “new-look” Knicks. Baron Davis has been a turnover machine since getting cleared to play. Throw in the back-to-back aspect, playing on the road, and the angry Miami factor, and you had a recipe for disaster.
Here’s the best news for the Knicks – February is one of the slowest sports months on the calendar, so as soon as Lin began to dominate, the media fell in love with him and couldn’t stop talking about him. The media crush was intense. How many NBA players do you think watched Sportscenter highlights and were annoyed with the amount of coverage this undrafted kid from Harvard was getting?
No more. NFL free agency is nearly upon us. March Madness is nearly here. Spring Training will be heavily covered. Lin won’t lead Sportscenter on a daily basis like he had been for the last two weeks.
The Heat? They look better than at any point last season. Winners of eight in a row, Chris Bosh (25 points) has his confidence back, LeBron is LeBron (20 points, nine rebounds, eight assists, this dunk):
and New York had no answer for D Wade (22-5-5). It’s no secret that Miami is the team to beat in the East, and Chicago is the 2nd best team. Third is up for debate. Can the Knicks catch Philly? We might get a sense in the two weeks after the All-Star break. New York opens with Cleveland, then have three challenging road games in a row – Boston, Dallas, San Antonio (the last two back-to-back). Then at Milwaukee. The following week: Five games – vs. Philly, at Chicago (back-to-back), vs. Portland, and then a home-and-home back-to-back with Indiana.
If New York wants to win the Atlantic and avoid a brutal first-round playoff series, I think they’ll need to go 6-4 or at worst 5-5 in that 10-game stretch. The point guards Lin will face: Irving, Rondo, Kidd, Parker, Brandon Jennings, Jrue Holiday, Derrick Rose, Ray Felton (if he gets his starting gig back) and Collison twice.

Novak needs more burn.
February 24th, 2012 at 10:02 AM
So, not much different from every game since he became the starter.
February 24th, 2012 at 10:06 AM
It was a nice run in a good system against mostly shitty teams. Back to Reno you go.
February 24th, 2012 at 10:06 AM
I’m abandonLINg ship.
February 24th, 2012 at 10:06 AM
This will still be true come the postseason…the Knicks can’t come close to matching Miami’s defensive ability
February 24th, 2012 at 10:07 AM
That LeBron dunk is viscous. Loved how the Heat werent celebrating, business beatdown.
February 24th, 2012 at 10:08 AM
I love how people acted like he was the Next Big Thing and the Knicks were going 45-5 the rest of the season.
And all of us who saw this coming from 10 miles away were labeled as “haters.”
February 24th, 2012 at 10:08 AM
♫ One of these things is not like the other, one of these things just doesn’t belong. ♫
February 24th, 2012 at 10:08 AM
Not jumping off the bandwagon. Never thought this was a make or break game for the Knicks or Lin, either. Anybody expecting the Knicks to even get out of the first round is borderline delusional. It’s still a great story if the Knicks even make the postseason. This isn’t an all or nothing proposition.
/just enjoying the ride’d
February 24th, 2012 at 10:09 AM
You mean you don’t have a Lin jersey hanging in your closet, right next to your Tebow jersey?
February 24th, 2012 at 10:09 AM
Fraud.
Is there going to be a post regarding Aaron Rodgers betting his salary next year that Braun didn’t take any performance enhancers and didn’t just get off on a technicality?
That was a rhetorical question.
February 24th, 2012 at 10:13 AM
I asked this last night, but is Jeremy Lin a bigger bust than Sam Bowie?
February 24th, 2012 at 10:13 AM
So now its a great story if they make the postseason? Your expectations are warped. The city expects them to make it far this year to justify trading away their team for Melo.
February 24th, 2012 at 10:15 AM
Looks like we can all go back to watching Rubio develop into the elite PG he is going to be.
February 24th, 2012 at 10:15 AM
I’m not sure about Sam, but I’d say Greg Oden for sure.
February 24th, 2012 at 10:16 AM
then had three challenging road games in a row – Boston, Dallas, San Antonio (the last two back-to-back)
♫ One of these things is not like the other, one of these things just doesn’t belong. ♫
ha. Twolves have a better record than boston, IIRC.
February 24th, 2012 at 10:16 AM
I thought TBL’s “coverage” of Lin was insufferable, but then I watched the first 10 minutes of the 9am SportsCenter yesterday.
February 24th, 2012 at 10:16 AM
At least you admitted the Bulls were the 2nd best team.
The Knicks are in trouble if they can’t get more movement in their offense, and also if they don’t start running Amare and Melo through the p&r constantly. I thought D’Antoni was some sort of offensive genius? Seems like maybe that Phoenix team just had really good players with Steve Nash running the show.
February 24th, 2012 at 10:17 AM
He should probably tread lightly on that subject, unless he tested the piss himself.
February 24th, 2012 at 10:17 AM
I asked this last night, but is Jeremy Lin a bigger bust than Sam Bowie?
I’m not sure about Sam, but I’d say Greg Oden for sure.
No he can’t be a bust. He wasn’t drafted, so nobody taken behind him can have a better career than he could. He’s immune to the Bust!
/flawed TBL logic
February 24th, 2012 at 10:18 AM
So is Tim Tebow!
/the other kind of Bust
February 24th, 2012 at 10:19 AM
FLAGGED for racism
February 24th, 2012 at 10:20 AM
Still, given the MVP and championship expectations, I think I have to go with him being the biggest bust of all time.
February 24th, 2012 at 10:20 AM
That LeBron dunk is viscous.
I really, really, hate doing this…but it bothers me to no end.
February 24th, 2012 at 10:21 AM
This is all Carmelo’s fault.
February 24th, 2012 at 10:22 AM
What? The dunk did have a high viscosity.
February 24th, 2012 at 10:24 AM
In summary, Lin is really not that good, but few people will recognize that fact because no one actually cares about the NBA when the NCAA tournament is going on.
February 24th, 2012 at 10:26 AM
Agree completely.
February 24th, 2012 at 10:28 AM
no one actually cares about the NBA when the NCAA tournament is going on.
unless they’re MU fans, right?
Because it appears as though they’re not too interested in a very good basketball team.
February 24th, 2012 at 10:29 AM
Nobody is beating Miami in the playoffs this year.
February 24th, 2012 at 10:30 AM
I asked this last night, but is Jeremy Lin a bigger bust than Sam Bowie?
TBLogic would say that Lin is not a bust because he was not hyped and not drafted highly.
February 24th, 2012 at 10:30 AM
Chicago absolutely can.
February 24th, 2012 at 10:31 AM
It was Ash Wednesday, dude. Have some respect.
Nice win last night. Iowa is tough.
February 24th, 2012 at 10:32 AM
Chicago absolutely can.
No way. Lebron will shut Rose down. Rose has already conceded victory to him, says Lebron can guard him easily.
February 24th, 2012 at 10:32 AM
Apparently I’m the only person who was never on it. When he gets within 1 to/g worse than Allen Iverson’s worst season, come find me.
February 24th, 2012 at 10:33 AM
I’m sure he was both serious and resigned to that fate, and will make no effort to avoid it.
February 24th, 2012 at 10:33 AM
They will still be scrutinized in the local media and Im sure nationally they’ll still be all over him. I guess the logic is that he will be moved from the top story to a lower spot?
February 24th, 2012 at 10:33 AM
Certainly. OKC would have a good shot in the Finals against them too.
February 24th, 2012 at 10:33 AM
And wasn’t drafted in front of Michael Jordan but not Kevin Durant.
February 24th, 2012 at 10:33 AM
It was Ash Wednesday, dude.
so? was unaware that forbid you from going out in public. did they not go to class or work that day either?
Nice win last night. Iowa is tough.
Yeah, and the Badgers aren’t any good. Still will play in front of a packed house next game though.
February 24th, 2012 at 10:35 AM
His TO rate was at the same level as Steve Nash’s as of 2 games ago. It’s probably still the case. TO/g is a bit misleading.
February 24th, 2012 at 10:35 AM
I’m sure he was both serious and resigned to that fate, and will make no effort to avoid it.
Well, I hope he has a 7th or 8th gear, because in his 5th gear he’s like 2-35* when Lebron’s guarding him.
*approximate
February 24th, 2012 at 10:37 AM
Both comments were sarcasm, H.E.
Student section is weak during crappy games, no doubt, but the Bradley Center will be something the Kohl Center will never be on 3.3.12 vs. G’town.
February 24th, 2012 at 10:37 AM
So now its a great story if they make the postseason? Your expectations are warped. The city expects them to make it far this year to justify trading away their team for Melo.
Warped expectations? And you followed that up with the next sentence? Uh-huh. All I knew about the Knicks is that they sucked ass before Lin. And even with the “turnaround” the team is still at or below .500. Like I said, good if they make the postseason.
February 24th, 2012 at 10:37 AM
Nope. They shoot to many jumpers. They’re a perimeter team, and Miami has the best perimeter D in the league. OKC needs an inside guy who can score.
February 24th, 2012 at 10:37 AM
Uh oh. A little ATL_Engager slipping through there, Pennypacker.
February 24th, 2012 at 10:39 AM
RG3 just came in at 6-2 3/8.
February 24th, 2012 at 10:39 AM
There’s nothing in last night’s action that would lead me to think that a first-round series between these two teams wouldn’t end in a 4-game sweep by the Heat. Lin was shut down effectively by Chalmers and his turnovers per game would, over a series, kill that team. And with Lin down, you’d have to expect for Carmelo to try and take over — but he wouldn’t be able to keep up with both Wade and Bron.
February 24th, 2012 at 10:39 AM
And I would hope so.
February 24th, 2012 at 10:40 AM
Uh oh. A little ATL_Engager slipping through there, Pennypacker.

February 24th, 2012 at 10:42 AM
I’m guessing the Knicks don’t end up as the 8-seed, they should be good enough to maybe get up to 5 and it’s tough to see the Celtics turning things around in the second half
The Bulls really are the only team in the East that can hang with the Heat, just need to do something, anything to finish out games better against them
February 24th, 2012 at 10:42 AM
It was yesterday afternoon too. I’m anxiously awaiting some old-fashioned engaging on another Braun post…
February 24th, 2012 at 10:43 AM
They might be able to keep Westbrook in check, but I don’t see how they’re shutting down him, Harden, and Durant. With Ibaka and Perkins in the middle for shotblocking and rebounding (Collison too), I think they would have an excellent shot. I don’t agree that the inside scorer is the key here.
February 24th, 2012 at 10:43 AM
Doesn’t Wisconsin have three or four times as many students as Marquette?
February 24th, 2012 at 10:43 AM
anyone see this gem left by the vortex of negativity last night?
You know what McIntyre, you need to quit selling yourself as a sports blog. If it’s anything other than pro-NY (Jets, Knicks, Yankees, etc) then they are all guilty and can rot in hell.
Objectivity is something you are unfamiliar with, and frankly, I could care less if I ever read your blog again. You are delusional, and your bias is sickening.

Who is the vortex of negativity? I really want to know if I fall into the “you know who you are” field
February 24th, 2012 at 10:44 AM
Doesn’t Wisconsin have three or four times as many students as Marquette?
yeah… but Marquette can pack the stands with students for games they deem worthy of their attendance. It’s not like there are more seats than in the BC than students.
February 24th, 2012 at 10:45 AM
This was said about Dallas before last year’s Finals

Who is the vortex of negativity? I really want to know if I fall into the “you know who you are” field
not sure how phillymantis is ahead of spencer there. no disrespect to philly, but spencer should be in a league of his own.
February 24th, 2012 at 10:47 AM
And I believe Marq has twice as many student tickets available per game than UW, but it’s too early for econ lessons.
Still, Marq student section was weak especially for the second to last home game.
February 24th, 2012 at 10:47 AM
Wow getting first mention among commenters is quite an honor. And I’m definitely not a legend like Spence, ark, SC and others.
But yeah, too much Lin, not enough talking about other players.
February 24th, 2012 at 10:48 AM
Sure, in the open court. Unfortunately for LeBron, the playoffs turn devolve into half court sets more often than not; which I’ll acquiesce Chicago isn’t great at yet.
February 24th, 2012 at 10:48 AM
Sorry, I can’t help but take potshots at MU. Tis’ my nature. It’s all in good fun.
February 24th, 2012 at 10:49 AM
This is great news for the Redskins.
February 24th, 2012 at 10:49 AM
And he would be correct. A “bust” is someone who doesn’t live up to expectations. Period. How can Lin be a bust?
February 24th, 2012 at 10:49 AM
I blame Carlos Boozer.
February 24th, 2012 at 10:50 AM
Jesus christ. It was a joke.
February 24th, 2012 at 10:50 AM
Well, listed attendance for Rutgers game was 14k or so. I don’t think that’s THAT bad.
February 24th, 2012 at 10:50 AM
Dallas had many more options to contend with on the perimeter than does OKC.
February 24th, 2012 at 10:50 AM
Yeah, what you said. And I don’t take any disrespect at all.
February 24th, 2012 at 10:50 AM
Something about night brings people to call out the EIC. Ronodman had an even more pronounced episdode about a month ago.
“Jesus Christ TBL, dont just dont write about sports ever again, you’re horrible.
I hope nobody actually comes to this blog thinking that TBL has any sort of knowledge about sports.
They will be sorely mistaken.”
February 24th, 2012 at 10:51 AM
Well, listed attendance for Rutgers game was 14k or so. I don’t think that’s THAT bad.
click on the picture I linked. My cousin was at the game, said pretty much the entire upper bowl was empty.
February 24th, 2012 at 10:51 AM
Third best in the East will be the Pacers, solid team and they might have one big move in them (have $15 mil in cap space). Could put a scare in Miami/Heat.
And for Lin, dude had one rough game, lay off. One game (or ten) does not make a season, why is everybody so damned rushed to judge, either way? Give him a year (or two) and then start saying he’s a bust or a star.
February 24th, 2012 at 10:52 AM
Meant Miami or the Bulls.
February 24th, 2012 at 10:52 AM
As well you should. For everything. If for no other reason than the spray paint he puts on his head every day.
February 24th, 2012 at 10:52 AM
You’re just jealous we have a coach that lets our players shoot with more than 10 seconds left on the shot clock.
February 24th, 2012 at 10:52 AM
To be fair, the Bradley Center is much too large a venue for Marquette… I really think they screwed up when they didn’t make the Al McGwire center big enough for on-campus home men’s basketball games. They should be playing in an arena that seats 12K, tops…. Perhaps with the option of playing their bigger games at the 18K Bradley center.
February 24th, 2012 at 10:53 AM
Well, it’s foolish to base any Lebron-led team based on regular season play. He has mountains of regular season and early playoff mastery to go along with his no rings. We’ve seen this before. The Heat looked pretty much invincible for parts of that game last night.
February 24th, 2012 at 10:53 AM
Steve Nash makes so much sense for them, luckily I haven’t heard any real rumblings, just ruminations in Bill Simmons columns
February 24th, 2012 at 10:53 AM
I’m biased as I am a Paul George fan, but they need to flip Danny Granger as soon as they can.
February 24th, 2012 at 10:54 AM
The people saying the equivalent of this before he had a bad game were essentially told to fuck off and let Knicks fans have their fun.
February 24th, 2012 at 10:54 AM
I’m guessing the Knicks don’t end up as the 8-seed, they should be good enough to maybe get up to 5 and it’s tough to see the Celtics turning things around in the second half
It’s all about the match-ups in the postseason. If they get the Bulls or the Magic (with D-Ho), the Knicks might skate by. But even getting a team like the Sixers or the Pacers might be a struggle.
February 24th, 2012 at 10:54 AM
How much less could you care?
/for SG
February 24th, 2012 at 10:54 AM
I agree, but who? There are only a handful of these guys left in the league and their teams aren’t giving them up.
February 24th, 2012 at 10:55 AM
Rondo would make even more sense. I don’t know how that could happen though.
February 24th, 2012 at 10:56 AM
The Knicks weren’t going to get fitted for rings last night if they won, and their season isn’t over with a loss. They’re in the same position the Heat were in this time last year. They’ll be a better team at the end of the season with their pieces gelling than they are right now. That was a 20 point blowout performance the Heat put on last night.
February 24th, 2012 at 10:56 AM

February 24th, 2012 at 10:58 AM
The Heat were something like 24-9 at this point last year.
February 24th, 2012 at 10:59 AM
I guess this post is taking the place of Ballin’? If so, I will take the time here to say the Lakers looked like absolute shit last night. It’s after games like this where I want to say it’s time to let Kobe pound sand. Dammit I can’t stand watching when he plays like that. Harden ate his lunch and so in retaliation Kobe proceeded to shoot the Lakers out of any hope at winning the game. Nice work Mamba.
February 24th, 2012 at 10:59 AM
Westbrook/Perkins and a few picks for Dwight.
February 24th, 2012 at 10:59 AM
Who is vortex of negativity?
ATL Penny — who were you referring to?
That’s his handle/name… Vortex of Negativity… it’s one of the last comments in the Braun post from yesterday afternoon.
February 24th, 2012 at 11:00 AM
could vortex = rondoman?
February 24th, 2012 at 11:00 AM
A lot of people think this, but playing at the Bradley Center is beneficial in all aspects for MU. Might have some games where they only get 10k fans in 18k seats, but the Bradley Center has the highest NPV for MU any way you look at it.
February 24th, 2012 at 11:01 AM
Send Granger and Collison for Rondo and JaJuan Johnson. The salaries matchup but that then gives the C’s one too many wings with Pierce, Allen, and Granger.
Nevermind. Sounds like the perfect trade for Danny Ainge.
February 24th, 2012 at 11:02 AM
OKC is legit. Looking like them and Heat in the Finals to me. OKC can def win that IMO.
February 24th, 2012 at 11:02 AM
And the Al McGuire Center is a 4k person facilty that barely fits on campus as it is. No way they would’ve gotten the space for a larger arena – and then they would not have been allowed to serve beer at games which is the only reason why I have season tix.
February 24th, 2012 at 11:03 AM
That’s not very good for Boston. They should get Paul George if they’re trading Rondo.
February 24th, 2012 at 11:05 AM
And the Al McGuire Center is a 4k person facilty that barely fits on campus as it is.
Marquette has cash and the campus is surrounded by ghetto, I’m sure they could have bought some land adjacent to it for cheap if they really wanted. If I’m not mistaken, they’ve been doing that anyway for safety/campus environment purposes.
February 24th, 2012 at 11:05 AM
Too bad OKC is not on Dwight’s ‘list’. Otherwise, I like this for both teams, although I think it would hurt the Thunder this year because Eric Maynor is out for the year and I don’t trust Reggie Jackson. Think the Magic could/would ship Jameer, too?
February 24th, 2012 at 11:06 AM
@MUWarriors84 How far is the Bradley Center from campus?
February 24th, 2012 at 11:07 AM
That’s too much. Collison, Granger, and a 1st rounder could work.
February 24th, 2012 at 11:08 AM
Haters are out in full force today.
February 24th, 2012 at 11:09 AM
Sure, but what is a better use of your money. Raise another hundred or two hundred million bucks to build a larger facility kind of off campus, or save it for educational purposes and just lease out an NBA arena?
The BC is 6-10 blocks due east of campus. Easy walk and they provide free buses for the students.
February 24th, 2012 at 11:09 AM
What if Ainge then moved Ray Allen’s expiring contract? Or is the Granger/Pierce wing combo the problem?
February 24th, 2012 at 11:10 AM
@MUWarriors84 How far is the Bradley Center from campus?
it’s a ways… you have to cross an interstate… walking I’m guessing it would take at least a half hour in the cold… I’m sure they have shuttles for students though. It’s definitely not right down the street.
February 24th, 2012 at 11:10 AM
OKC needs an inside guy who can score.
I agree, but who? There are only a handful of these guys left in the league and their teams aren’t giving them up
But they’d have to give something of value and they likely don’t want to start messin’ with their chemistry right now.
Nice work Mamba
If the Lakers are going to make any personnel moves, now is the time. They have to either make that move for Howard or for Williams and hope that it’s enough. Cause right now they’re likely a 2nd-round exit.
February 24th, 2012 at 11:14 AM
BC is a little over a mile from the student union according to google.
February 24th, 2012 at 11:15 AM
What the…it’s not like we’re playing frogger. You go down Wells St (which goes over I-43) and hang a left on 6th street and it is two blocks away.
And it is a 30min walk on crutches.
February 24th, 2012 at 11:15 AM
Problem is, other teams know this and can play hardball. Lakers just have to ride it out and accept their 2nd round exit this year. When Dwight and Deron call the bluffs of their teams, we’ll see what happens.
February 24th, 2012 at 11:16 AM
The Heat struggled against teams with winning records and were still gelling at this point last year.
February 24th, 2012 at 11:17 AM
If the Lakers are going to make any personnel moves, now is the time.
Problem is, other teams know this and can play hardball. Lakers just have to ride it out and accept their 2nd round exit this year. When Dwight and Deron call the bluffs of their teams, we’ll see what happens.
They should save their powder for the summer and make a run at D-Will (Their PG need >>>>> their need for D-Ho).
February 24th, 2012 at 11:24 AM
Yet they were actually a strong team. They were losing closer games to good teams and blowing out bad teams. I just think it’s clear that you can’t compare this Knicks team to last year’s Heat at all. The Knicks are way more of a mess and have a ton of work to do.

This makes more sense than giving up Bynum and possibly Gasol for Howard. Also helps cure the 3 point ills. Seeing him and CP3 battle on a regular basis would be awesome.

They really are a completely different team this year. Much better role players and way more comfortable with their offense. Defense is better than ever when they’re fully engaged.
Only the Bulls in the east can take more than 1 game from them in a series.

I didn’t say the Knicks now were as good as the Heat then. I said they’re in a similar position in as far as gelling. Of course because of the condensed season, and JR Smith coming from China, the Knicks are starting further behind and gelling curve has to be accelerated. But, they will be a team at the end of the year none of the top teams will want to face, if in fact they aren’t one of those top teams.

Their defensive rotations last night were beautiful.

It blows my mind how well Bron and Wade fill the lanes on the break.
