Classy Pat Knight Scorns Lamar Seniors in Post-Game Press Conference
After losing three out of four, Lamar coach Pat Knight was not a happy camper. He expressed his frustration with the grace oft-shown by his infamous father, pulling a kid away from the microphone and going on a rant. He called out his seniors en masse for academic, disciplinary and drug issues. He called out his seniors individually, breaking out the stat sheet and ripping their individual performances.
“We’ve got the worst group of seniors right now that I’ve ever been associated with. Their mentality is awful. Their attitude is awful. It’s been their MO for the last three years.”
“These guys gotta learn. They gotta grow up. They don’t need to be coddled. They don’t need to be babysat. That’s the problem with society. That’s why we have problems out there, because people don’t make kids accountable.”
“These kids are stealing money by being on scholarship with their approach to things.”
One would believe him, if this sentiment was not in sharp contrast to complimentary comments he made about the same players just three weeks ago.
“My style of ball, of course is the motion offense, but you’re going to defend, go for loose balls. You’re going to grind it. Sometimes it doesn’t look pretty, but I think that style is a lot harder to play against instead of just running up and down and jacking a bunch of shots. That’s what I’m most pleased about out of this team. This team in my four years as a head coach reflects the way I want my team to play.”
“We’ve just got guys that buy in. (My dad) loves the defense. That’s his M.O. … But when we’re hitting shots and clicking, our offense looks pretty good. But he just likes how hard the kids play. He gets intrigued by Lamb and guys that size that can rebound like that. He just really enjoys being around these guys.”
Must have been a rough three weeks. There’s nothing nobler than blaming college kids and no one better qualified to lecture on hard work and success than a man who was handed his livelihood through nepotism. The Cardinals, incidentally, are 17-11 and on pace to have the best record for a Pat Knight coached team.

Lamar > Lamar
February 24th, 2012 at 10:48 AM
There is like no way possible that this could be a motivation tactic. Like totally impossible.
February 24th, 2012 at 10:48 AM
pretty awesome that a horrible coach gets a job based on his last name.

Hedley Lamarr > Lamar > Lamar
February 24th, 2012 at 10:50 AM
Sounds to me like he’s doing a poor job coaching. As well as the other things expected of a college coach.
February 24th, 2012 at 10:50 AM
Also an unhappy camper: Jim Jones

If his dad wasn’t Bob. Knight this would have never been written.
The second set of blockquoted comments praise a team for doing the right things. The first set scolds a team for not doing those same things. So, when a groups of players fails to meet a set of standards, is the coach just supposed to let that slide because three weeks ago they were playing well?
Your lede on the mainpage mentions drug use. I don’t see that here. But hey, gotta use a flamethrower when a 12 inch wooden ruler will do, right? Anything for sensationalism.
February 24th, 2012 at 10:52 AM
This is 1864. You can sue her!
February 24th, 2012 at 10:53 AM
Should he have applauded them for these things?
February 24th, 2012 at 10:53 AM
I understand being annoyed that Pat Knight is a head coach because of his affiliation with his father, but spare me the “poor college kids” bullshit. These aren’t elementary students being scolded for their behavior at recess. These are fucking ADULTS. If they don’t want to get yelled at they can quit playing basketball at shitty Lamar or they can stop being fucking assholes, go to class, and pass a drug test.
February 24th, 2012 at 10:55 AM
He says the sheriff is near … and to draw your own conclusions!
February 24th, 2012 at 10:56 AM
But the reason it would never have been written is because this guy would be selling insurance in some small town if his dad wasn’t Bob Knight.
February 24th, 2012 at 10:56 AM
No one even knew Pat Knight was at Lamar, and I will freely admit I’d never heard of Lamar and had to google it to see where it was located.
February 24th, 2012 at 10:56 AM
agreed that if his dad isn’t Bobby Knight he doesn’t have a coaching gig.
February 24th, 2012 at 10:56 AM
Do you want me to transcribe an entire eight-minute video?
February 24th, 2012 at 10:57 AM
stop it sportsgal. These guys are all 1st round nba talent but Knight is clearly holding them back. They just need to quit being so damn unlucky and have a coach that believes in them.

Travelling from Houston to the Lamar campus provides for some entertaining reading on the billboard around Vidor and Orange. Karol Keaton Kockslaughter would love it there.
February 24th, 2012 at 10:58 AM
Fine, why do it in public?
February 24th, 2012 at 10:59 AM

February 24th, 2012 at 11:05 AM
Uh, why NOT do it in public? Obviously scolding them behind closed doors has had no effect in changing their behavior.
February 24th, 2012 at 11:07 AM
Plus, despite the humungous tragedy that the bball players at Lamar are not being paid for their performance and the $hundreds of dollars they’re brining in to the community, school, etc., these kids are getting their school paid for and are held to a hire, arguably more public standard.
February 24th, 2012 at 11:07 AM
I don’t understand why it’s so taboo for people to be called out for their behavior in public, especially if it’s an ongoing problem. People at my office get called out in meetings all the time when they screw up. Is this not a normal part of life?
February 24th, 2012 at 11:08 AM
That would be awesome to see on TBL. Duffy posts a C+ blog and Jason enters the comments fray and admonishes him for it. Straight up TBL Thunderdome.
February 24th, 2012 at 11:08 AM
Is this not a normal part of life?
No, it’s very normal. Like you said, if the behind the scenes stuff isn’t working sometimes different motivation tactics have to be implemented. I would have went the Mike Singletary route.
February 24th, 2012 at 11:08 AM
Sounds like a great college coach if he’s recruiting guys like this and not making them any better in three years…perhaps it’s time to find a new line of work Pat
February 24th, 2012 at 11:13 AM
No video. Damn it. I love me a good rambling whiny Pat Knight speech.
February 24th, 2012 at 11:14 AM
Butters nailed it. Blame the coach for recruiting them and not coaching them up vs publicly lambasting them. Sends the wrong message to future recruits. I know the coach at Adams college will use that to sway kids from Lamar to be wearing an Atoms jersey.
/ has no idea who Lamar plays
February 24th, 2012 at 11:15 AM
By capitalizing adults, your point has successfully been driven home.
February 24th, 2012 at 11:17 AM
This is his first season at Lamar.
February 24th, 2012 at 11:17 AM
Then how does he know they’ve been assholes for three years?
February 24th, 2012 at 11:21 AM
Found this. Does not sound like a drug problem to me:
Photo via lamarcardinals.com
Name: Charlie Harper
Team: Lamar University (College Basketball)
Charge: Possession of Marijuana (Misdemeanor)
Story:
Lamar University forward Charlie Harper was arrested Thursday (January 26, 2012) in Beaumont, Texas.
Harper was arrested at 10:40 p.m. after less than one quarter ounce of marijuana was found in his room on campus.
Harper, a senior, was suspended three games after this incident.

Worked really well for him.
February 24th, 2012 at 11:23 AM
Apparently, Lamar’s athletic department realized posting the video themselves was a bad idea.
February 24th, 2012 at 11:24 AM
Ok then FUCK you. How’s that?
February 24th, 2012 at 11:28 AM
Uhm, Mr. Ryan, exit stage left, sir, there is no comeback for this.

I wonder what Pat Knight’s views on nepotism are like.
February 24th, 2012 at 11:56 AM
The entire Knight family should be devoured by a pack of wolves.
February 24th, 2012 at 11:56 AM
Your lede on the mainpage mentions drug use. I don’t see that here. But hey, gotta use a flamethrower when a 12 inch wooden ruler will do, right? Anything for sensationalism.
Oh, he absolutely mentioned drug use in his rant. He also kicked the kid, who was saying that they had a bad game and looked depressed, out of the press conference because he didn’t know how to play.
Also, if there is one thing that shows lack of effort, it is getting offensive boards after missing shots. Pretty sure the problem is probably talent. You can’t try harder to hit jump shots.
February 24th, 2012 at 12:10 PM
I’d like a video that wasn’t “removed by the user.”
February 24th, 2012 at 12:30 PM
Pat Knight is “stealing money” by being a piss poor coach. These are amateur athletes; rip them face-to-face. To play the hard guy to the media is weak.
February 24th, 2012 at 12:37 PM
Beaumont is like the Bakersfield of Texas.
Vidor is like the Seventh Level of Hell of Texas.

Hedy Lamarr: not only an exotic babe of the 1940s, but also the inventor of this.
February 25th, 2012 at 10:59 PM
All I know is my boss better be doing his job perfect before he calls me out in public in front of everyone. It’s hard for me to believe that he could call out his whole team. One or two players, ok. But the whole team? He’s just a crybaby that was handed a job based on his last name. His records show that. Go ahead and defend him sports gal, he won’t be in coaching in 5-10 years, but he will still be a douchebag like his senile father.
