Also, what positions does it apply to?

The WPA is based on play by play records. So, any play where the player is credited in the play by play (tackler, pass defensed, in coverage, interception, etc), the result of that play, positive or negative, is judged against the average change in win probability for a play of that type.

The drawbacks are there–play by play not complete, and like I said, for a corner, if they give up a few big plays but also cause the other team not to throw their way by covering well most of the time, then they would be underrated by this measure.

PFF’s ratings are based on game charting and watching the game video and trying to assign responsibility for the play.
