Right now it looks like NBCSN is just compiling crap the hegemon sets aside.

This is an excellent illustration of Duffy’s 98 cent writing style. He is mostly writing at the typical sports fan level – but then tries too hard to throw in some sophistication. It doesn’t flow. Speaking of Costas, his use of vocabulary (as well as those of Al Michaels – in the tradition of Howard Cosell) is both sophisticated and flows. With Duffy – it’s too forced. On the other hand, if Duffy wanted to show off a hidden skill – then let the entire piece be Buckley-esque; teeming with erudite words and sentences.

Not that hegemon is a bad word, per se. It just doesn’t fit well here – given the overall level. Ironically, the best observation of the piece is a fitting description of the above sentence:

The network’s supplementary programming has resembled the Island of Misfit Toys.

Never been on one. I grew up in Western Kansas and my dad was a crop duster. He knew every farmer in five counties. I did do a guided fishing trip in college and guide wouldn’t let us drink beer and we didn’t catch dick.

Carlin was always preachy though, but he was able to pull it off because he had original thoughts and didn’t just say that some aspect of our system or society was “bullshit” over and over again to applause.

I know I have, but all I can recall is that they tasted like bland fried stuff and I had been drinking. There was a bar near where I grew up that was famous for them, evidently, but it’s gone now.
