It’s a bit more complicated than that as the television revenue for a team like Boston or New York will always be much better than a team in the midwest. So owners of small market teams are starting out with less revenue in the first place. To say nothing of the fact that, even when they suck, Yankees merchandising is a cash cow….ain’t no one wearing Royals hats to basketball games in December.

That mindset is why this is exciting. It’s a win-win situation for the Buccos. They pick up a guy who will be their opening day starter for nothing. No pirate fan think he’s going to win the Cy Young, but he is better than anyone on staff. Though, it doesnt make much sense to not sign a younger Paul Maholm for roughly the same money.

Can someone shed some light as to how Oakland is considered a small market? I understand that they are, just confused as to why. Isn’t the bay area one of the largest metropolitan areas in the country?
