ESPN’s Fired “Chink in the Armor” Editor Says it Was an Honest Mistake
Anthony Federico is the young man’s name. He’d worked for ESPN since 2006, when he started out as an intern. The last headline he wrote for ESPN’s mobile site was around 2:30 am. Saturday morning. “Chink in the Armor” was up for 35 minutes, seen by many, and by 8 am Saturday morning, it was a firestorm. ESPN quickly apologized, then canned Federico (and suspended TV anchor Max Bretos for 30 days). Federico told the NY Daily News he understands why he was fired, and added that he’d used the line “hundreds” of times before.
“This had nothing to do with me being cute or punny … I’m so sorry that I offended people. I’m so sorry if I offended Jeremy.”
Apologies are infectious this morning – Ric Bucher just apologized for a “sweet & sour” tweet. [NYDN]

I can’t be the only one who thinks this shit has been blown totally out of proportion, right?
Then again, I’m not really offended by anything, so maybe it’s just me.
February 20th, 2012 at 10:43 AM
So am I to understand that the same man writes, approves, and posts the headline? Shouldnt he, I dunno, have to run it by someone else first?
February 20th, 2012 at 10:43 AM
It was a dumb and careless mistake, but if it was the first time he’s made a huge mistake firing him seems like a pretty steep penalty.
Not really sure how Dana Jacobson has a job if this was a fire-able offense. What she did was just as bad, IMO.
February 20th, 2012 at 10:44 AM
What she did was just as bad
I actually think it was probably worse.
February 20th, 2012 at 10:45 AM
Mike Tirico also. I guess it really depends how important you are to the company. Intern headline writer was dispensable, and allows you to ‘prove’ how ‘seriously’ youre taking this.

‘Editor’ is really only an honorary title these days. Sort of like being the Queen of England.
February 20th, 2012 at 10:46 AM
So had David Carradine.
February 20th, 2012 at 10:46 AM
o am I to understand that the same man writes, approves, and posts the headline? Shouldnt he, I dunno, have to run it by someone else first?
The headlines on ESPN.com change every 20 minutes. Once they’re hired to write those headlines, I doubt they have to run it by and editor.
February 20th, 2012 at 10:47 AM
i think it’s an excuse for someone posting something slightly negative about Lin, it has nothing to do with racism.

He’s the editor so it’s his job to managed the headlines and check copy. I feel bad for him because I expect he’s telling the truth when he says it was an honest mistake. Posted at 2:30 am? He was probably tired and just went with a simple tag line for the Knicks’ loss, one that of course was racially insensitive.
Lin’s the fourth Asian-American to ever play in the NBA so the phrase “chink in the armor” hasn’t really ever been a problem before.
February 20th, 2012 at 10:49 AM
Jeremy Lin continues to ruin people’s lives. Thanks, Knicks fans.

There are people that do? I have a set of clippers in my desk drawer but that’s only if I get a hangnail in the middle of the day.
February 20th, 2012 at 10:49 AM
why do people find it acceptable to clip their nails in the workplace?
people suck. these are the same people who think it’s cool to blare country music at their desk in an era where almost everyone can afford some sort of mp3 player with headphones.

ESPN used the same headline during the olympics in 2008. Doubt that guy was fired.

February 20th, 2012 at 11:05 AM
It’s a complete non-issue. Only one PG has the ball in his hands more than Lin (Westbrook), and none are playing more minutes. Combine the two, and you get a lot of turnovers.
February 20th, 2012 at 11:07 AM
This is all just . . . stupid. Stupid editing, stupid reporting, and stupid over-reaction. Firing all of the early-morning internet editors will not rectify all of the problems at your abominable network. I suppose it’s impossible to simply take Lin’s ethnicity out of this altogether, like we do with the rest of the players. Stop the puns, stop the “cleverness” – just stop and appreciate the performance of a kid who’s played pretty well in what’s still a limited sample size.
February 20th, 2012 at 11:07 AM
and considering the actual term doesn’t refer to an asian person being placed in armor and chink wasn’t put into quotations or emphasized, and it was used in the literal definition:
1. a small narrow opening, such as a fissure or crack
chink in one’s armour a small but fatal weakness
blown way out of proportion. I think he was fired for not using “another weak LINk” or some lazy Lin wordplay.

February 20th, 2012 at 12:08 PM
Except for the way Alex Smith plays QB, if I remember back to last month.
February 20th, 2012 at 12:12 PM
He wasn’t a star, but he was the first Chinese player in the NBA, and he had a large following for that. Yao didn’t make the All Star game over Shaq as a rookie because of his pedestrian season. Being in NY accentuates the Lin story, it doesn’t drive it. A Chinese dude with an And 1 game, graduates from Harvard, comes out of nowhere and plays with a swag. He’s a huge story anywhere, just like Tebow was a huge story out of Denver.
