Karl Towns Jr. is Probably the Next Big Thing in High School Basketball
Karl Towns Jr. is a ninth grader who stands 7-feet tall and is averaging 11 points and 10 rebounds per game for St. Joe’s in New Jersey. (It’s the same high school that produced Jay Williams and Andrew Bynum.) Towns was a 6-foot-10, 225-pound eighth grader. As you might expect, colleges are already hot on his trail:
“Know when I realized my son was good?” Karl Sr. said. “When colleges started visiting him (this year). When Tom Izzo came in. When Cincinnati flew in. When Kentucky showed interest. When Syracuse came in and visited. Villanova was in the house. When I saw all them cats in the gym, Jay Wright and everybody asking about him, I said these coaches are coming out to recruit a freshman. Come on, you have to be outstanding to get people to fly out and see you in your own gym.
Kentucky – as expected – has a huge “in”: Towns played for the Dominican Republic U-17 team, and one of the coaches was the brother of a Kentucky assistant. As you can see from the video below, Towns isn’t just some interior player who swats shots and dunks – he’s got a feathery touch from beyond the arc. [Star Ledger; photo via Inquirer]

If you’re 7 feet tall in high school, 11 and 10 is an embarrassment.

He probably committed to Kentucky 3 years ago.

It could be me, but he doesn’t look like he’s 7’0

He doesn’t at all, I was expecting him to really tower over these kids but it’s not looking that way to me either.

Not if you’re a freshman on one of the best teams in the state.

I wouldn’t call that a huge “in.” There are still two more years for him to get his mind changed by recruiters.

He’s probably 14-15 years old and growing like crazy. There is no shot that you know exactly what to do with your body at that age. Plus, that school is good, so there are other good players getting buckets.

That St. Joe’s team is one of the top teams in New Jersey? All those other dudes looked like marks to me.

I’m not convinced that this isn’t Brian Cook.
