How Nasty Would a Pau Gasol-Kevin Love Frontline Be in Minnesota?
With the emergence of center Nikola Pekovic, one would think Minnesota’s not in the market for a big man to pair with Kevin Love in an effort to make a run at a playoff berth. Pekovic has turned heads in February: Six double-doubles in nine games, and averages of 17.1 points and 10.6 rebounds while shooting 61 percent from the field. Despite Pekovic’s surge, a report claims the Wolves are interested in prying Pau Gasol away from the Lakers, in an effort to team him with his buddy from Spain, Ricky Rubio:
Minnesota continues to pursue a possible trade for Lakers forward Pau Gasol, dangling rookie Derrick Williams, who is from the Los Angeles area, and draft choices. The only players considered untouchable by the Timberwolves, who are seeking to add a veteran by the trade deadline, are Kevin Love and Ricky Rubio. The Timberwolves believe it could be enticing for Gasol to play on the same team as fellow Spaniard Rubio.
A Gasol-Love combo essentially would be a top five center and a top five power forward in the same frontcourt. It would also signal to rookie Ricky Rubio that the franchise is committed to keeping him happy. And it would certainly give Minnesota the frontcourt depth to deal with the Clippers in the playoffs. But would giving up promising Derrick Williams, draft picks and maybe a someone else be too much for a guy who turns 32 in July?
As for the Lakers, while they need to get younger, they are desperate for 3-point shooting, and Williams, who is only making 23-percent of shots behind the arc, won’t solve that. Is giving up Gasol a white flag on the season? How would Kobe like that move? Gasol’s stats are down slightly this season (18.8 to 16.8 points, 53 percent shooting to 50 percent this year), but he hasn’t fallen off a cliff, which was the fear after last year’s awful playoff series against Dallas.
I’d love to see a 2-man game between Rubio and Gasol, with Kevin Love on the other side spotting up.
Minnesota’s 14-16, but only two games out of the final spot in the West. [Fox Sports]

God I hate this time of year. Come on opening day!

Really stupid, in my opinion. Pekovic is good and cheap as hell. Why trade for an expensive, old Pau unless you think you’re a piece away from a title?

Somebody didn’t read the post because this question was already answered: friendship

Williams isn’t going to get much PT behind Love and playing them together doesn’t quite work. I’d move him before he possibly gets exposed and loses value (not that that will happen, but it could).
Not sure I want Pau though. I’d rather get younger as this team is still 2-3 years away from really competing.
Also, Pekovic has been playing really well as of late, averaging 17-11 for February.

Of all the ridiculous rumors about Laker trades this one is the most improbable. Only way this happens is if Kupchak prefers collecting unemployment to being GM.
February 16th, 2012 at 4:13 PM
solid opinion, bud.
February 16th, 2012 at 4:13 PM
This is just about the most stupid trade I’ve heard offered up. Do you really think the Lakers would give up Gasol for draft picks? Only way the Wolves get Pau is if they give up Rubio and a first rounder, simple as that. Which ain’t happening either. Moving on…
February 16th, 2012 at 4:13 PM
Could work out great, but then again, it could also not work out.

They should trade for Marc Gasol, then.
By the time Rubio is set to test Free Agency, Pau will be old and worthless.
February 16th, 2012 at 4:14 PM
What Minnesota really needs is a SG not named Luke Ridnour or a SF not named Wesley Johnson (who might be the worst starter in the league).

I heard the Lakers are interested in “prying” Deron Williams and DHoward from their current teams in a 3 team trade involving World Peace, Luke Walton, and Derek Fisher’s corpse + a trade exception…
February 16th, 2012 at 4:16 PM
From the Lakers perspective, if they’re content on punting this season, it’s not a bad trade. They need to get rid of either Kobe, Gasol, or Bynum to free up some money. Kobe’s not going anywhere (has a no trade anyway).

Maybe Kobe wants to go somewhere where there are fewer gold-digging Latinas.

The Lakers are not going to give up on a the season when they are a decent PG away from being a title contender
February 16th, 2012 at 4:19 PM
Gasol for Derrick Williams, straight up. If the Lakers could add a dunk contest participant before All-Star Weekend, that would be huge

February 16th, 2012 at 4:23 PM
The Lakers shouldn’t give Pau or Bynum up unless they get a decent/star PG or star player in return. Williams is good, but he’s not that good. And the Lakers are contenders as long as Kobe is on the team. Pau has been playing big lately…averaging something like 18-13 the past 5 games or so.

I only trust Woj, Berger, Marc Stein with reports when it comes to the NBA. The rest either make shit up or have horrible sources. Broussard specially.

Honestly, they could just amnesty him, but the fans would stage a revolution and chop Mitch’s head off if that happens. Plus, his production levels are still pretty high.

you have to change your name. If you change it to Ty Webb, it will have to be Ty Webb 3.0, because there’s already a 1 and a 2. But your little moniker makes you too easy to confuse with Menarky Party.

That’s because the EIC is… wait for it… all-Lin on the NBA
February 16th, 2012 at 4:44 PM
I can’t help but feel like you would enjoy the NBA more if it was a great big “1 on 1″ tournament with each team consisting only of a shooting guard.

Gasol disappears from games quite often, but he also bails out Kobe more often than most people will admit.

I know. He was still Menarky Party when I got here, so I figured I was fine. Now it just seems like he’s my grandson. Or my third son, George Foreman-style. I’ll think of something.

February 16th, 2012 at 5:17 PM
He’s a 37 year old QB who hasn’t played in a year, and we’ve been getting hit non-stop since the season ended about whether or not he’s going to get cut. That’s a month straight, how many new angles can you come up with this story?
February 16th, 2012 at 5:21 PM
If he wasn’t getting punked in every other game in that series, it wouldn’t have gone 7. Thank goodness for him Perkins didn’t play Game 7.
February 16th, 2012 at 5:24 PM
He sucked in last years playoffs, and in the first Finals against the Celtics. That being said, I still don’t want to trade him. Especially for Derrick Williams.
February 16th, 2012 at 5:24 PM
What’s deeper – the corners of Rob Gronkowski’s mouth, or the slits of Jeremy Lin’s eyes?
February 16th, 2012 at 5:26 PM
Lakers need a Point Guard. That is all. A Rookie and some Future Late First Round Picks won’t do shit.
February 16th, 2012 at 5:27 PM
Ballz, everyone sucked in Game 7. Watch it again. It was an abortion of a game.
