ESPN Poll Asks Whether Jeremy Lin is NBA’s Best Point Guard
Concoct reactionary response by seeding poll. Use reactionary response to troll fans and attract attention. Have trusty analyst swoop in to calmly refute obviously reactionary response. Classic ESPN. Today, the Worldwide Leader would love you to weigh in on their pressing issue of the day: is Jeremy Lin the best point guard in the NBA? No Deron Williams. No Westbrook. Linsanity.
Only 15 percent of America, thus far, has taken the bait. Though, it’s still disturbing he has received nearly twice as many votes as Rajon Rondo (32 points, 10 rebounds, 15 assists). Nine days. Fluky lockout season. Settle down. Though, truly, with the Super Bowl and now Jeremy Lin it’s nice to see New York receive some sorely needed national media attention.

To be fair, “Lin” comes first alphabetically.
February 13th, 2012 at 11:09 AM
Haha yes – classic ESPN. Don’t know any other sports sites that do the exact same thing…
February 13th, 2012 at 11:10 AM
Flip. Murray.
February 13th, 2012 at 11:10 AM
If this was the NFL, the pundits would be saying that this is your classic “not enough footage” player who would be found out the 2nd time he faced a team like the Patriots or Steelers or Ravens.
So why is that different in the NBA? 5 games. That’s the stretch of this Charge of the Lin Brigade. If he’s still doing this in April, we can go crazy. If he’s still doing this next April, then every plaudit and pageview is justified.
February 13th, 2012 at 11:14 AM
Duffy where is your piece about the inherent racism from writers saying things like “Lin has a Kung Fu grip on the league”? In the hopper? I’m looking forward to it.
February 13th, 2012 at 11:15 AM
ESPN is a first-ballot troll hall of famer.
February 13th, 2012 at 11:15 AM
legit lol.
February 13th, 2012 at 11:16 AM
Tango and Cash was on Encore last night. Stallone was surprisingly good at playing a yuppie cop.
February 13th, 2012 at 11:17 AM
There should have been a poll at the end of the final week of the NFL season asking who the best quarterback in the NFL was, and one of the choices should have been Matt Flynn.
February 13th, 2012 at 11:18 AM
If only CJ Watson had put on a better performance yesterday to make this poll…there’s another guy who went undrafted and bounced around Europe and Golden State before playing surprisingly well this season, I’m sure his accolades will start if Rose gets bad news on his back today
It’s like something from a Reggie White speech
February 13th, 2012 at 11:18 AM
What’s the fuss? It’s either Lin, Jimmer or Rubio.
February 13th, 2012 at 11:18 AM
I am more outraged they listed Derrick Rose as a PG.
February 13th, 2012 at 11:18 AM
ESPN should put together another poll asking who the most clutch playoff QB ever was and include Frank Reich as a choice.
February 13th, 2012 at 11:19 AM
Three weeks ago, Rubio would have been a choice. Now he’s not even a choice.
February 13th, 2012 at 11:19 AM
The thing is I’m being serious, I would actually want to read that. I think there has been a fair amount of racist stuff thrown about with Lin. Writers just think it’s okay because Asians aren’t Black.
February 13th, 2012 at 11:19 AM
Me Lin you long time.

Shit, last night they had Lionheart at midnight. Now, I had to get up early but there was no way in hell I wasn’t watching it.
February 13th, 2012 at 11:20 AM
They did, but Tebow was a choice instead of Reich.

espn is a caricature…so sad.

Clearly all the Tebow voters were too young to remember 35-3.

I also don’t follow the NBA as much as some of you do, but I’m guessing Steve Nash and Tony Parker’s omissions are still preposterous.
February 13th, 2012 at 11:24 AM

Flip Murray’s first 5 starts in the NBA (4-1), 36.6 minutes per game:
24.6 pts, 5.2 rbs, 4.8 ast, 1.6 TO, 51% FG, 35% 3pt, 76% FT, 1.0 stl
Jeremy Lin’s first 4 starts in the NBA (4-0), 39.5 minutes per game:
27.2 pts, 4.0 rbs, 8.2 ast, 5.5 TO, 51% FG, 23% 3pt, 74% FT, 2.0 stl
I think it’s perfectly reasonable to state that we should all relax.

The thing is I’m being serious, I would actually want to read that. I think there has been a fair amount of racist stuff thrown about with Lin. Writers just think it’s okay because Asians aren’t Black.
Yeah I hit on this over a weekend thread. Lisk’s sanctimonious post on Whitlock’s apology failed to note the irony of the earlier KUNG FU comment by the site Editor-in-Chief.
February 13th, 2012 at 11:27 AM
Uh, Junior should absolutely be on that pole, Daytona is one of the tracks he does well at and he’s actually a good outside bet to win the Chase this year. Second at the 500 two years ago, won the pole last year.
February 13th, 2012 at 11:28 AM
Jim Leyritz was a more clutch postseason hitter than A-Rod! I’m sure if Twitter existed during that World Series the lady Yankee fans would have gone on about how they’d let Leyritz drive them around while drunk any day
February 13th, 2012 at 11:29 AM
Considering Junior hasn’t won a race in 4 years and Patrick has never won any kind of race on this hemisphere……
February 13th, 2012 at 11:29 AM
im going with seagal…casey ryback is a force to be reckoned with.

Don’t forget, he left the Yankees long enough to fuck over my 102 win Astros as a member of the Padres in ’98. My teams, all of them, have a habit of playing to shitty players throughout their histories.

JSOC budgets, I don’t think, are fully classified. There are programs which only the members of the respective Intelligence and Armed Forces Committees know about, but to my knowledge, only the Intelligence Budget each year is fully classified. In fact, almost every intelligence budget ever put together remains classified, with a handful of exceptions.

Not as much as you might think. The Washington Post had a pie chart the other day showing what percentage of federal employees work for each Department. Defense was by far the largest with around 32% of all federal employees. DHS, if memory serves was less than 10%.
February 13th, 2012 at 11:38 AM

and then legalized weed and levied taxes against it, while allowing people to buy very expensive permits to grown their own.
surprised big tobacco isn’t lobbying for it since they need a future product and they’d be in prime position to sell it en mass.

Danica Patrick is switching to the Nationwide Series (Busch) full time this year with a handful of Sprint Cup (Winston).
This June will be 4 years. He was competitive last year and almost won 3 times. Your hatred of all things popular is ridiculous. Find another avenue to vent your frustration or sit in your little hole in Baton Rouge. No one gave a fuck about the Saints until 5 years ago. Count your blessings.

Big Tobacco is actually doing just fine. R.J. Reynolds had a very positive earnings report for last quarter. The reason is that they are pivoting form the North American market, where fewer and fewer people are smoking, to Asia; especially India and China. There are as many smokers in China (315 million) as their are people living in this country. Chew on that for a moment.

The other thing to consider, is if that 1% cut is all this year, or over a period of years, which they like to do. It gives them a great headline to run, without all the work to back it up.
February 13th, 2012 at 11:52 AM

I’m not saying I would put my 401k in there. I have a friend whose been a long time investor in Altria, which is somewhat more stable because I believe tobacco (Marlboro) is just one of their brands and they also have subsidiaries in agriculture and food processing.

You’d really have to have the pulse of the legal system and knowing what sort of settlements could be out there against Big Tobacco before investing in it. That said, there is likely some value there.
February 13th, 2012 at 11:57 AM

You’re right. Anybody can win Daytona if recent history is an indicator. Didn’t David Ragan win the July race?

I mean, Altria’s stock price has gone up 153% in the past 10 years (DOW, 30%) and 403% the past 20 years (DOW, 298%).
They also pay a 5%+ dividend and have paid one for the past 44 years.
February 13th, 2012 at 12:00 PM
