Carmelo Anthony Refers to Jeremy Lin as the Knicks’ “Rudy”
Rudy Ruettiger, the inspirational figure behind the movie “Rudy,” was a practice squad player and parlayed one sack in his final game at Notre Dame into a career as an motivational speaker and purveyor of questionable investments. And we thought Jeremy Lin’s five-game sample size was too small upon which to build a reputation.
Today, Carmelo Anthony was speaking to reporters and compared Jeremy Lin to the subject of the 1993 movie (or, alternatively, to Rudy Gay): “He’s Rudy, that’s our Rudy”. The New York media has been scurrying to create a conflict between the return of the ball movement-challenged Carmelo and the new point guard Lin when Carmelo returns. The guess here is that this comment will not be viewed positively, regardless of how ‘Melo intended it.
Lin has been the key figure and story at the center of a run by the Knicks while Anthony has been out of the lineup since playing five minutes in the Utah game a week ago, a stretch that has resulted in four straight New York wins. He hasn’t just been a little inspirational figure who made one symbolic play, inspiring his better teammates to want to do better.
Of course, if we are comparing players to athletic movie characters, then perhaps Carmelo is the Knicks’ Teen Wolf, a basketball player who loved to have the ball in his hands and dominate play. With his Rudy now playing, we’ll see if Carmelo can refuse to “wolf out”, and transform himself into the Knick’s Scott Howard instead.

Condescending much, Carmelo?
The NY media won’t have to scurry much for conflict in this case. Just watch the team when Carmelo returns. We all know what’s gonna happen. It’s been touched on here already. They’re gonna lose, and look ugly doing it. The internet will be ablaze with “down with ‘Melo” chatter.

I was a huge Melo fan until I followed him on Twitter a little over a year ago. Then he had a bunch of whiny tweets aimed at a number of trolls talking smack to him about his lockout tweets. He just comes across like a baby and has a sense of entitlement. I know most athletes do but at least some of them hide it well

This will be an interesting dynamic to watch when Melo does come back. In Simmons-speak Melo is the Alpha Dog. Lin will defer to him no doubt and it will change how Lin plays. Will he be influenced by looking for Melo more instead of seeing the whole floor? He has flourished because there hasn’t been any “Alpha Dog” issues so far. Melo is a me first player. Destined to be a car crash.
February 13th, 2012 at 3:09 PM

I posted this in the other thread, and I feel like it deserves a second look. If no one cares, I’ll fuck off. I just think it’s a glaring example of why everyone needs to relax on Lin. He’s a very solid player that’s going to help the Knicks a lot.

February 13th, 2012 at 3:16 PM

pretty sure a clip on bowtie from a department store would fit a dog pretty well… at least the ones that attach around the neck and clip together in the back.

Jason, this is what frustrates me about the league. I know talent makes up for a lot. But, if you are a Wizard fan or a Bobcat fan, and you watch the Knicks win without their two highest-paid players, you might ask “why can’t the Wizards share the basketball like this? Why can’t the Bobcats play with better focus?”
Teams that don’t play together often suck. We see it, why can’t the Wizards?

chicago, that is a great point. The challenge for Lin is to keep it up, as teams now have enough film to ID his tendencies. Will the numbers stay consistent? Will they keep winning? Let’s see.

Cowboy Mike: Sir, I need to know where I can get some dog bowties.
Hank Scorpio: Dog bow ties? My goodness, what an idea. Why didn’t I think of that? Dog bow ties Homer, there’s four places. There’s the Dog Bow Tie Hut, that’s on third.
Cowboy Mike: Uh-huh.
Hank Scorpio: There’s Dog bow ties-R-Us, that’s on third too. You got Put-Your-Bowtie-There.
Cowboy Mike: Mm-Hmm.
Hank Scorpio: That’s on third. Swing Low, Sweet Botie…Matter of fact, they’re all in the same complex; it’s the dog bow tiescomplex on third.
Cowboy Mike: Oh, the dog bow ties district!
Hank Scorpio: That’s right.
February 13th, 2012 at 3:24 PM
And I don’t really mean to suggest that Lin will be Flip Murray in 2 years. I think he’s got a lot of potential to embrace being less of a scorer and more of a distributor (think Rondo with less speed) on a team with a lot of scoring ability. He can average a shitload of assists for this Knicks team. For this to happen, Melo also needs to embrace trying to score on the move and in other ways besides isolation. I don’t see why they can’t run some sort of dual pick and roll with Lin, Melo, and Amare. That could be dangerous.
February 13th, 2012 at 3:25 PM
Cam Neely is not amused.
February 13th, 2012 at 3:25 PM
Maybe. Let’s see him pass the ball a little better and hand it to the other team a little less. He may end up being a quality starter long term, but if I had stock in him, I’d be selling high right now.
February 13th, 2012 at 3:26 PM
I am pretty sure you can buy a bowtie from one of those shitty prom tux places in the mall.

February 13th, 2012 at 3:34 PM
Do we now? In Denver, he was assisted on 59% of his baskets as opposed to 29% this year. The Knicks have forced him into point guard duty. He doesn’t want to handle the ball – he wants to finish.
If you don’t think he can play off the ball, watch some video of his brilliance at the ’08 Olympics.

February 13th, 2012 at 3:34 PM
When teams stop his right, Lin really sucks. Minnesota played him perfectly in the second half, you better believe other teams will play him the same way. It’s going to be harder once Amare and Melo come back though.
February 13th, 2012 at 3:36 PM
When we rented a place with hardwood floors, the crazy boxer used to tear them up, so we bought these booties for her. Watching her splay out like a baby giraffe, then try to walk picking each foot up one at a time as high as possible would have been a quality youtube video. Highly recommended.
February 13th, 2012 at 3:36 PM
My justification for doing this is that when she gets home from work (before coming to pick my ass up from work) she’ll open the door and see her flowers and gifts on the table, so the dog might as well be classed up a little.
February 13th, 2012 at 3:36 PM
I don’t see why they can’t run some sort of dual pick and roll with Lin, Melo, and Amare. That could be dangerous.
With everyone healthy, that Knick roster can be very good. I guess ‘Melo won’t want to change his game very much. In his mind, his paycheck is validation that “his game” doesn’t require adjusting.
I understand we all see what should happen when the injured return to the lineup. Personally, I have doubt that ‘Melo especially will change a bit for the good of the team. I could see Stoudamire thinking “Lin sharing the ball could be good for my shooting percentage”.
Lin, Stoudamire and Chandler could be a good mix for pick-and-roll options.
February 13th, 2012 at 3:37 PM
I thought you are throwing your panties at Shea Weber?
February 13th, 2012 at 3:37 PM
That’s incredible. I had no idea this was true. Makes me think the Knicks will be a lot better when he comes back as long as D’Antoni uses him correctly.
/that’s probably a big “as long as”
February 13th, 2012 at 3:38 PM
Phenomenal.
Her dog can’t handle the road salt that is down in the winter, it hurts his paws. Did you realize that Timberlands for dogs are not a real product? Those things would be mad successful. This dog needs them, especially considering the neighborhood she lives in (the local kids comment on his bandanna colors and his gang allegiance).
February 13th, 2012 at 3:38 PM
He’s basically a rookie, and rookies turned the ball over like MFers. All of them.
February 13th, 2012 at 3:38 PM
I wonder how good Lin will be when he is no longer the primary scoring option. I assume he’s taken the most shots in every game he’s played this year. He’s going to have to be dropped to 3rd pretty consistently if the Knicks are going to win.

February 13th, 2012 at 3:41 PM
Yea I just went looking for other rookies after I made that comment. I think it’s still a little high, but he’s also had a lot of pressure to score and distribute. That obviously won’t be the case when Melo and Amare come back.
February 13th, 2012 at 3:41 PM
Kitton Mittons FTW.
February 13th, 2012 at 3:42 PM
And, again, it’s only been 4 games. So the TO rate is likely going to drop regardless.
February 13th, 2012 at 3:42 PM
Curtis, my main point is ‘Melo adjusts when ‘Melo wants to adjust. In the Olympics, he did adjust for the sake of the team.
I was under the impression that D’Antoni’s offense was predicated on lots of motion. Is that a strength of ‘Melo’s game in NBA competition?
I saw a few Denver games before his trade to NY. Sure, he moved some. There were a lot of possessions, however, that ended up “iso to ‘Melo”.
On the nights he was on, he could pile up points in a hurry. Some nights, however, when he was off the whole team offense ground to a halt.
February 13th, 2012 at 3:47 PM
Well ‘melo will be back Friday, so we won’t have to wait too long to see. Be funny if they sign JR smith in the next couple days.
February 13th, 2012 at 4:02 PM
@Curtis- well then they can get him for one year at the mid level and still could be in trouble retaining him long term. Whether its this year or the next some team will offer him a contact that will make it tough to pay. Assuming he remains a solid starter
February 13th, 2012 at 4:04 PM
Really? That’s even better.
February 13th, 2012 at 4:07 PM
