Liverpool Finally Ends Its Silly Defense of Luis Suarez Over Patrice Evra Incident
Liverpool FC has ceased its defense of Luis Suarez. The Uruguayan striker, who served an eight-match suspension for racially abusing Patrice Evra, nearly caused an altercation before the Liverpool vs. Manchester United match by petulantly refusing to shake Evra’s hand. The club issued a statement explicitly criticizing Suarez for his actions and had Suarez himself issue an apology.
From Liverpool’s Managing Director Ian Ayre:
“He was wrong to mislead us and wrong not to offer his hand to Patrice Evra. He has not only let himself down, but also Kenny Dalglish, his teammates and the Club. It has been made absolutely clear to Luis Suarez that his behaviour was not acceptable.
From Suarez’ apology:
“I have spoken with the Manager since the game at Old Trafford and I realise I got things wrong.
“I’ve not only let him down, but also the Club and what it stands for and I’m sorry. I made a mistake and I regret what happened.
Liverpool manager Kenny Dalglish also issued an apology for not condemning Suarez’ actions yesterday.
“When I went on TV after yesterday’s game I hadn’t seen what had happened, but I did not conduct myself in a way befitting of a Liverpool manager during that interview and I’d like to apologise for that.”
Someone high up at Liverpool finally realized this silly charade was indefensible and affecting the club’s brand and public perception. The question is why it took the powder keg nearly exploding in their faces to take action. A prompt, appropriate response could have diffused this situation months ago.

” A prompt, appropriate response could have diffused this situation months ago.”
I wish someone had told Chelsea that after the first QPR game…

Yeah, the media would have completely dropped it and not framed this match around the issue at all.
They handled it really poorly, but those suggesting it would have put the issue to bed are full of shit. The same media that raked Blatter over the coals for saying handshakes could end racism make a spectacle out of handshakes in both the Terry and Suarez cases. They’re disingenuous at best, fanning the flames and hoping for the worst at the worst. Watching Ian Darke smile as they heard of the tunnel bust up yesterday was sickening.

It would have been covered certainly and been an issue. Though, the club’s campaign on behalf of Suarez was stupid and exacerbated the tension needlessly.
