Jeremy Lin vs. Ricky Rubio is How You Should Spend Your Saturday Night

Yes, you should plan your Saturday night around an NBA matchup between a second year point guard from Harvard and a rookie point guard from Spain.
(On the undercard: Tyson Chandler vs. Kevin Love.)
Lin’s 23, Asian-American, and has had a Kung-Fu grip on the league for the last week: 25 points, 7 assists vs. the Nets; 28 points, 8 assists vs. the Jazz; 23 points, 10 assists vs. the Wizards and 38 points, 7 assists vs the Lakers. Golden State Warriors fans are wondering where this was last year; Houston Rockets fans are angry the team wavied him to sign Sam Dalembert. (Their GM, Daryl Morey, has copped to swinging and missing, badly.)
Rubio, up until a week ago, was probably the best NBA story this season. The frail 21-year-old point guard made the Timberwolves wait two years before leaving Spain, but he’s been worth it: 10.9 points, 8.7 assists per game. He’s fifth in the league in assists per game, and tied for first in steals (2.4). The Timberwolves (13-14) are showing signs of life for the first time since Kevin Garnett was traded to Boston in 2007.
This will be Lin’s first true road test (Washington was most certainly not a test), and his first back-to-back. The Knicks are 6.5 point underdogs.

In case anyone saw this and didn’t know, Lipscomb is crazy about their rules… BYU-esque. This could have been for something as simple as being in a female’s room unattended, I believe. I had a friend who was an undergrad there, and when I visited her, she was paranoid we’d be seen hanging out on the lawn together. I also think alcohol is a huge no-no, even if you are of age, so they are all crazy about facebook privacy and pictures.
It’s similar to another Nashville school, Trevecca, with extreme alcohol policies. I had some Trev. kids living above me and they had a loud party once. I threated to call the school, and never heard another peep from them.

Nate Silver’s piece about Lin today was pretty interesting: http://fivethirtyeight.blogs.nytimes.com/2012/02/11/jeremy-lin-is-no-fluke/

Lin’s 23, Asian-American, and has had a Kung-Fu grip on the league for the last week
Oof. That was pretty bad.

Lin’s will run through you faster than some spoiled Suan Cai.

I’d like to throttle the “I knew Lin would make it crowd.” No you didn’t. There was no uproar to play him. He was largely an ethnic marketing choice for 2 teams and latched on to an uber PG-desperate NBA team. His jumper and confidence have improved a ton in the last few years.
I’d like to ask all these NBA insiders who else is the NBA missing? Name me 5 guys in the NBDL. Ever look at the 2nd rate shit show of free agent players in the NBDL? Why were you right on Lin? B/C he has a safe fundamental game that you think would pave his way to stardom. There are dozens of guys each year like that – they end up in Europe. By large, the NBA talent guys get it correct with young free agents by an astounding margin.
Lin’s rise is a real anomaly. Also, I didn’t realize how bad the Lakers PGs are at defense.

Nah. Just angling for Saturday evening pageviews.
February 11th, 2012 at 6:46 PM
Ohh ooh post it again!
February 11th, 2012 at 6:52 PM
The Lakers tried to stop his right. That lasted only for a few plays. If he was that easy to figure out, it would have happened already. The Lakers D is one of the stingiest in the league.
/ their O is also one of the crappiest
February 11th, 2012 at 6:53 PM
Goddamnit, Guy should’ve been an All-star this year, IMO.

Jeremy Lin is hot like the peppers in General Tso’s chicken
February 11th, 2012 at 7:00 PM
Jeremy Lin is going Pearl Harbor on the NBA!
February 11th, 2012 at 7:24 PM
Fuck Fox Sports North for showing the Wild tonight. They add a 2nd FSN channel and still are not showing this game.
February 11th, 2012 at 7:29 PM
Not on tv here (Colorado), will have to find a feed somewhere.
But, we do have Les Canadiens versus the Maple Leafs on NHL Network. Mats Sundin night!
February 11th, 2012 at 7:34 PM
Come again?
February 11th, 2012 at 7:56 PM
Apparently it’s a Timberwolves problem, and not a Fox Sports one. FS tried grabbing the other 10-15% (whatever it is missing) of games that either 45 or WFTC had previous seasons, but the Wolves didn’t want it to happen.
February 11th, 2012 at 7:57 PM
I didn’t know it, but I hoped it ever since he dropped 25 on BC his senior year, especially after Golden State (my 2nd favorite team) picked him up his rookie year. I just hope this isn’t a Dickau/Dragic situation

February 11th, 2012 at 8:15 PM
it is that easy. The Lakers guards just aren’t good enough to sustain it.
February 11th, 2012 at 8:17 PM
RIP, Whitney. Still gives me goosebumps.
February 11th, 2012 at 8:19 PM
crack hor down……shocking
February 11th, 2012 at 8:20 PM
Aw, man. Hate to hear that about Whitney.

February 11th, 2012 at 8:24 PM
Rubio with 4 pts and 4 ast, Lin with 4 pts and 2 ast halfway through the 1st.

Lin outplaying Rubio through the end of the first quarter. When does he become legitimately legit?
February 11th, 2012 at 8:39 PM
Hilarious
February 11th, 2012 at 8:39 PM
Sadly, the vocal histrionics she inspired will go on, and on, and….

JJ Barea is the next Jeremy Lin.

Dang, that phrase makes me giggle. Thanks, CJ.
Seriously, when that does happen, I’ll mourn. I was a big fan of his.
February 11th, 2012 at 8:44 PM
Minnesota is gonna break out as a team (much like the Thunder) in a year or two. This team has a good collection of talent.
February 11th, 2012 at 8:45 PM
If Pekovic pans out, they’re solid all around.
February 11th, 2012 at 8:46 PM
Martell Webster needs to get a haircut.
February 11th, 2012 at 8:46 PM
Bill Walker fucking sucks.
February 11th, 2012 at 8:47 PM
Turnovers are still the killer. 13 already tonight after 28 (NBA season high) last night. Ugly.
February 11th, 2012 at 8:47 PM
Minnesota is gonna break out as a team (much like the Thunder) in a year or two.
To me, that is where Rubio can be key as he gets more experience. They have guys who can score, and Darko is a willing defender in the post. They just need a consistent ringmaster/distributor offensively. Rubio can be that guy long-term.
February 11th, 2012 at 8:49 PM
D’Antoni looks like the guy from the Pringles can.

Hey, Love has a double-double already. 18 and 10 before halftime.
February 11th, 2012 at 9:01 PM
Lin just took it to the rack off a steal. Reminds me of Tony Parker.
February 11th, 2012 at 9:02 PM
Lin over Rubio!
February 11th, 2012 at 9:03 PM
LIN AGAIN!
February 11th, 2012 at 9:04 PM
Can he really be this good?
February 11th, 2012 at 9:04 PM
Lin’s shooting is something. I don’t think he’s hit the rim on a jumper.
February 11th, 2012 at 9:08 PM
He can’t keep this pace up, but I’ll be damned
February 11th, 2012 at 9:09 PM

Kevin Love is a beast.
February 11th, 2012 at 9:30 PM
Rubio with a ridiculous assist down low to Pek.
February 11th, 2012 at 9:31 PM
Rubio is locking down Lin in the second half. So much for being a terrible defender.
February 11th, 2012 at 9:33 PM

Lin is coming back down to earth now. Rubio’s done a great job on him.
February 11th, 2012 at 9:51 PM
Lin that 3rd quarter: 2 pts, 0-5 FG, 1 ast.
Not saying it was all Rubio, but the past week Lin hasn’t really been just stopping himself.

February 11th, 2012 at 10:01 PM
Lin turns the ball over quite a bit.
February 11th, 2012 at 10:02 PM
The Wolves have solved Lin on this night. Keeps losing the ball or getting rejected.
February 11th, 2012 at 10:04 PM

Watching that Lima ad, I realized that she married Marko Jaric…who hasn’t been in the NBA since 2010 and will make pretty bad money for the rest of his career since he’s over 30. I wonder if they’ll stay together.
February 11th, 2012 at 10:20 PM

I’ve been diagnosed with the shingles. I got on meds yesterday. My head is throbbing. This is nonsense I really didn’t need. Cavs had Varajeo hurt, OSU got throttled, I took my son to see Cleveland St. lose to Butler. Good god.
February 11th, 2012 at 10:57 PM

i’ve always pictured crusty butt issues for some reason. isn;t that what TLR had last season, that made his face look funny?
anyway, sorry scripty
February 11th, 2012 at 11:14 PM
It’s a form of chicken pox I believe that generally only affects adults…I remember when Dave Letterman was sidelined for a month with them but think that was a severe case
February 11th, 2012 at 11:16 PM
I was very lucky. I have a very mild case compared to some of the shit I saw online. Essentially you get wore down from being sick and shingles comes in. You get a few sores. I have one above an eyebrow and 2 on my hairline. At first I thought I went overboard b/c my two sons and I got all nuts doing pro wrestling in the living room and lately they’ve been really stepping up their cheap shots. They were like abrasions.
But the office hypochondriac told me this and I knew it could be bad so I went to the doc office. Doc took 1 look goes You have the Shingles. so I just take some pills. But I guess some people get all wore down and then get prone to staph and shit, so it could get real nasty if you dont catch it. What I have is more of a nuisance.
February 11th, 2012 at 11:23 PM
i think because it sounds like dingleberries is why i always associated it with some butt-skin affliction
anyway, get well soon
February 11th, 2012 at 11:35 PM
The jury is still out. He’s ranked about 28th in shooting % among point guards and tonight he folded under the pressure of the moment like a cheap umbrella.
February 11th, 2012 at 11:44 PM
rubio shouldn;t be judged one way or the other until year two and three i think. needs a bit of muscle and to get used to the league. euro ball is good competition, but this is a dark alley
