Has Baylor’s Perry Jones Played His Way Out of the NBA Draft’s Top 10?
Or should I ask if his coach, the capable-of-recruiting-but-not-coaching Scott Drew is submarining his best player so maybe he sticks around Waco for another year?
I don’t care that Perry Jones dominated Texas (22 points, 14 rebounds) or Oklahoma (21 points, 12 rebounds), or that he’s 6-11 and has the handle of a small forward and runs like a gazelle. Here’s what the ridiculously talented (nobody’s arguing that) Perry Jones has done in Baylor’s three biggest games this season:
at Kansas (blowout loss): 8-17 FG, 1-2 FTs, 18 points, 5 rebounds
vs. Missouri (loss): 4-7 FGs, 0-0 FTs, 8 points, 4 rebounds
vs. Kansas (blowout loss): 1-8 FGs, 3-4 FTs, 5 points, 3 rebounds
Should we blame Scott Drew for not getting Jones shots, or for Jones not calling for the ball? How, in three games against Top 10 teams, does Jones attempt just six free throws? His “desire” and passive nature have been written about plenty, but Jones returning for his sophomore season was supposed to eliminate some of those issues. Unfortunately, they’re still major, major red flags.
Who wants an unassertive 6-foot-11 small forward in the lottery? Jones is definitely going in the lottery, but last summer he looked like Top 5 material; I don’t think he’s Top 10 right now.
Here are the 10 guys, right now, I’d take in the draft ahead of Jones:
1. Anthony Davis, Kentucky
2. Austin Rivers, Duke
3. Brad Beal, Florida
4. Jared Sullinger, Ohio State
5. Michael Kidd-Gilchrist, Kentucky
6. Harrison Barnes, UNC
7. Andre Drummond, UConn
8. Jeremy Lamb, UConn
9. Terrence Jones, Kentucky
10. Thomas Robinson, Kansas
The only name on that list you could quibble with is Terrence Jones, who like Perry Jones likes to float on the perimeter. But Jones is tough – perhaps to a fault – shoots better from three, and might be a more nature NBA fit at small forward. What about John Henson, the rail thin power forward from UNC? Would you prefer him to Jones? How about 7-footer Tyler Zeller? You know what you’re getting from him (scoring ability, blocks, rebounding).

Scott Drew is submarining his best player so maybe he sticks around Waco for another year?
Oh come on.
February 9th, 2012 at 1:52 PM
leave Thad Matta out of this.
February 9th, 2012 at 1:52 PM
No. I bet he’s like Barnes last year: he’ll turn it on when the games really matter.
I like the Peter King-style numbering system. 1,2…7, smiley face, 9, 10.
February 9th, 2012 at 1:53 PM
JMac has a major hard-on for Brad Beal.
February 9th, 2012 at 1:54 PM
Perry Jones becomes a non factor is way too many of his games — but he’ll be a top 5 pick and I would be confident in wagering on that.
February 9th, 2012 at 1:55 PM
May I ask why there is a smiley face wearing sunglasses next to Jeremy Lamb’s name. Surely I’m not the only one who sees this.
February 9th, 2012 at 1:59 PM
Also, though I am an OSU grad and admitted OSU homer — I don’t see Sullinger translating to the league that well. He isn’t a good post defender and Im unclear in which position he would play in the NBA. Perry Jones will be drafted ahead of him.
February 9th, 2012 at 1:59 PM
Why hasn’t Beal “played his way out of the top 10″? In Florida’s “3 biggest games” (Ohio St., Syracuse, Kentucky) he’s shooting 13-40 (32.5%).
Jones had same number of buckets on 8 fewer shots in his big games while “playing his way out of the top 10″.

I feel dumb by not knowing this.
February 9th, 2012 at 2:05 PM
Let’s just send him to the Wizards or Pistons and be done with it.
February 9th, 2012 at 2:06 PM
Rivers the #2 pick? I guess since he’s Steve Francis 2.0 that makes sense.
February 9th, 2012 at 2:07 PM
Come on, you’re just submarining Sullinger so he sticks around Columbus for another year.
February 9th, 2012 at 2:08 PM
Baylor is soft and cowardly. Now go beat Mizzou Saturday.
February 9th, 2012 at 2:09 PM
Come on, you’re just submarining Sullinger so he sticks around Columbus for another year.
That would be awesome, but I dont see it happening. I see him being a good but not great NBA player.
February 9th, 2012 at 2:10 PM
Jesus Kentucky, surely that money train is going to de-rail at some point right?
February 9th, 2012 at 2:13 PM
Rivers is going to stay.
February 9th, 2012 at 2:13 PM
jeremy lamb’s eyebrows freak me out. he looks like uncle leo when elaine drew eyebrows on him.
February 9th, 2012 at 2:13 PM
Peyton Manning can’t throw can’t throw to his left according to NFL Network
February 9th, 2012 at 2:15 PM
Not next year. Loaded class again.
February 9th, 2012 at 2:16 PM
Sullinger – poor man’s Kevin Love?
February 9th, 2012 at 2:17 PM
I cannot imagine why an NBA team would be leery of taking a huge guy from OSU that can’t stay healthy due to issues with being a giant.
February 9th, 2012 at 2:17 PM
Jeremy Lin can’t drive left. Hasn’t hurt him too much.
Every thread needs at least one Lin reference.
February 9th, 2012 at 2:19 PM
Harrison Barnes is going to be a lottery bust. MJ will probably draft him
February 9th, 2012 at 2:20 PM
@AllWhoYonder — you psyched for Cabin Fever? I’m hoping to catch both shows in Asheville. Maybe Charleston, too.
February 9th, 2012 at 2:20 PM
Sullinger – poor man’s Kevin Love?
He’s nowhere near the quality of passer or shooter that Kevin Love is. You could talk me into them having similar post games — both are liabilities on the defensive end.
February 9th, 2012 at 2:22 PM
the fix will accompany the debut of the mobile site.
February 9th, 2012 at 2:22 PM
Kurt Thomas ceiling.
February 9th, 2012 at 2:23 PM
That’s just stupid.
February 9th, 2012 at 2:24 PM
Where is the white boy from Georgetown going to go?
February 9th, 2012 at 2:24 PM
My first times watching him I though more like a Corliss WIlliamson. Good game sense and interior passing. But he is just going to struggle on defense against a number of PFs.
February 9th, 2012 at 2:26 PM
Somebody has to have pointed out Davis’ eyebrows to Davis himself, right? I don’t see how he isn’t aware of how absurd he looks.
February 9th, 2012 at 2:26 PM
@scripty — Big Nasty is an apt comparision. I award you all of my internet points to give for the day.
February 9th, 2012 at 2:28 PM
Hey, Kyrie bucked the trend of all Duke alums being terrible, awful pros. Maybe Sullinger can do the same.
Re: tOSU big men, Kouffos is getting some run with Denver, and Mullens doesn’t look completely awful anymore.
February 9th, 2012 at 2:28 PM

STIEMSMA!
February 9th, 2012 at 2:29 PM
That’s all well and good. I still would not touch a guy who has back problems with a ten foot pole. The human body is not supposed to be that big.
February 9th, 2012 at 2:30 PM
Sullinger is different from K-Love in that he has a post game. K-Love is a bull in a china shop down low.
Does have a sweet stroke from 3, though.
February 9th, 2012 at 2:30 PM
It’s as big as his wingspan. Someone please tell the poor kid!

Yikes. The unibrow combined with his abnormally small forehead make him look like he belongs on the set of Star Trek.
February 9th, 2012 at 2:31 PM
so…call came from the portland area code, im guessing?
February 9th, 2012 at 2:31 PM
LEGEND.
February 9th, 2012 at 2:31 PM
The Scarecrow is -4 after 4 holes at Pebble.
King Grizz. I think even though he’s not a speedy guy he’d be better on an offensive-minded team with a coach that could use him properly.
February 9th, 2012 at 2:32 PM
Like, he literally might have the smallest forehead I’ve ever seen.
February 9th, 2012 at 2:32 PM
@what’s my name
unfortunately, they aren’t coming far enough north for me (New England). I’ll catch em somewhere this summer though…

February 9th, 2012 at 2:34 PM
The late 90s was Duke’s peak. Back when Grant Hill was arguably the best player in the league.
Now? Bunch of nice role players + Kyrie.
February 9th, 2012 at 2:36 PM
Even Joe Flacco thinks he should tone that unibrow down a bit.
February 9th, 2012 at 2:36 PM
One thing I’ll never get used to while living in the South… the constant need to name everything after someone. Standard freeway overpasses (not something with some architectural flare, just a regular old bridge), Interstates, entrances to office buildings, and even the Nuclear Power plants… the “Alvin W. Vogtle Electric Generating Plant”
February 9th, 2012 at 2:36 PM
yeah that picture was fucked up.
February 9th, 2012 at 2:37 PM
The late 90s was Duke’s peak. Back when Grant Hill was arguably the best player in the league.
Wasn’t MJ the best player in the league during the late 90′s (Grant Hills peak?)… come on now.
February 9th, 2012 at 2:37 PM
IFFYA PUT YER NAME AWN IT, AINT NOBODY CAN STILL IT.
February 9th, 2012 at 2:37 PM
leave Thad Matta out of this.
So are the Michigan coaches incapable of either? Well unless a booster pays webber 200k that is.
February 9th, 2012 at 2:38 PM
I can tell you that Green Apple just played itself out of my Top 5 Airheads flavors. That was gross. Rather lick an envelope for an hour.
February 9th, 2012 at 2:40 PM
soemone’s going to be praying for rain so the tourney gets shortened to 54-holes!
his dealer?
February 9th, 2012 at 2:40 PM
Actually Duke has more successful NBA players playing right now than anyone but UCLA and in a year Kentucky.
But by all means continue to not understand how difficult it is to be even a role player in the league.
February 9th, 2012 at 2:41 PM
Scott Drew is submarining his best player so maybe he sticks around Waco for another year?
give me an effing break. we have as much talent as anyone in the nation, and drew will not submarine shit because of it. baylor as it currently stands, is mentally weak. and leading that is perry jones. he just does not have the capacity to dominate night in and night out.
we will be a 3 seed, and be eliminated by the second weekend.
February 9th, 2012 at 2:41 PM
No, not really. Jordan was the best player ever through his first retirement. When he came back, he was still a great player, but I don’t think any would consider him the best.
February 9th, 2012 at 2:42 PM
When he came back, he was still a great player, but I don’t think any would consider him the best.
Who was a better player in the league during their 2nd 3 peat?
February 9th, 2012 at 2:42 PM
irvin, your name always freaks me out since i have friends with the last name Pankey
February 9th, 2012 at 2:43 PM
I think quite a few would. I’m sure you’ve got some stats to show me but don’t bother. MJ was the best for me (opinion) and that’s that.
February 9th, 2012 at 2:43 PM
The drummer from REM is going to call that guy about how he got that terrific Unibrow.

Shaq being at the height of his powers could be placed in the running here
February 9th, 2012 at 2:46 PM

i thought shaq’s tweet the other day when kobe passed him was remarkably free of ass-tasting

John Huh, AGAIN. Despite not playing on the Tour last year, he’s already 35th on the USA Ryder Cup team with just 3 starts.
John Huh is ……..THE JEREMY LIN of the PGA TOUR.
/that right?
February 9th, 2012 at 2:48 PM
This is definitely the case. There’s not another possibility.
February 9th, 2012 at 2:48 PM
Shaq.
February 9th, 2012 at 2:48 PM
jones shouldn;t even be in the same pic as robinson
looks up
February 9th, 2012 at 2:49 PM
No way in hell would anyone consider the league’s leading scorer the best player in an era when Vin Baker and Mitch Richmond were getting All NBA honors. Insanity.
February 9th, 2012 at 2:50 PM
Possibly. Did his teams get swept by the Jazz? I can’t remember. Doesn’t say anything about him as an individual player, I just can’t remember them having success vs. Utah at the height of Stockton and Malone’s powers.
February 9th, 2012 at 2:51 PM
he’s the korean trevino.
February 9th, 2012 at 2:51 PM
I guess I shouldn’t have said there wasn’t “any” that would consider him the best player. Clearly there were and are. My mistake. Hell, there are still people that think Kobe is the best player in today’s NBA.
That said, he wasn’t the best. Shaq at least was better than him.
February 9th, 2012 at 2:52 PM
Not even Shaq could overcome the Malone-Stockton-Ostertag Big Three
February 9th, 2012 at 2:52 PM
Another reminiscent moment… didn’t Shaq try to pulverize Rodman during a Bulls-Lakers game in like 96 or 97? I think Dennis was lucky that Pippen stepped in there if I recall correctly.
February 9th, 2012 at 2:54 PM
That said, he wasn’t the best. Shaq at least was better than him.
Well, certainly nobody was arguing Grant Hill was better than MJ. That’s crazy talk.
February 9th, 2012 at 2:55 PM
grant hill stuffed the sheet like lebron did. he was fantastic.
February 9th, 2012 at 2:56 PM
Grant Hill wasn’t even as good as Scottie Pippen, let alone MJ. Case dismissed.
February 9th, 2012 at 2:57 PM
WHAT?
February 9th, 2012 at 2:57 PM
Grant Hill and Anfernee Hardaway both had their cases in the late 90s, also. Especially since Jordan wasn’t even playing for the last two years of the 90s.
February 9th, 2012 at 2:59 PM
Also. Tim Duncan.
February 9th, 2012 at 2:59 PM
No love for Hakeem?
February 9th, 2012 at 2:59 PM
I guess it was more mid-90s for Penny. Was thinking his injuries didn’t start till 2000, but he was dinged up before then.
Could’ve been an all-timer.
February 9th, 2012 at 3:03 PM
Hakeem was the best for those 2 years. Then MJ came back, probably still the best. Then Shaq, then Tim, then Kobe, then Lebron, now I dont even know.
February 9th, 2012 at 3:07 PM
those teams with him, Shaq, Nick Anderson and Dennis Scott were fun to watch. wasn’t it soon after that he started getting hurt?
February 9th, 2012 at 4:05 PM
His mom was wearing a “Brow Down” T-Shirt to the UK-FL game this weekend. He is aware of it. He shaved/plucked/otherwise dealt with it for Midnight Madness but has let it grow back in. I suspect it doesn’t hamper his efforts with the ladies at UK who worship the hoopsters…otherwise, he would keep it manicured.
