Why Does Eli Manning Have to Be So Darn Likable?
Eli Manning should be objectionable. We should detest him. He’s the son of an NFL quarterback. He was the star quarterback himself in both high school and college. He was the NFL’s No. 1 Draft Pick. He has won multiple Super Bowl MVPs. He plays in New York. Any one of those factors in isolation could have contorted his ego into an unconscionable menace, yet he emerged unscathed. He’s pleasant, sincere and untouched. It’s unnerving.
He is laid-back. He’s self-effacing. He’s not chisled from granite. He’s not cloyingly tight with the man upstairs. His wife is attractive, but from real life. He displays the precise measure of awkwardness someone normal would show when run through a media obstacle course. As his more ostentatious teammates (and ex-teammates) preen themselves, he looks away sheepishly. Manning is the anti-Brady, or, perhaps, Brady without the inner torment and the celebrity facade.
Peyton can be charming. Eli just is. He has many of the same qualities, but his competitiveness is transparent. We can see his effort, his frustration and his maniacal mind at work. He’s in your face. He erupts on you. Eli sneaks up noiselessly, stabs you with an economy of emotion and walks out with the same “aww…shucks” expression. Afterwards, he’s inoffensive and incredibly gracious. Peyton is similar. We like his commercials, but he’s a little too brilliant. We don’t hate him, necessarily, but when the schadenfreude is there it’s easy to revel in it.
We can root against Eli Manning. We can criticize his quarterbacking acumen, but he does not have that one annoying or sinister personality trait that fuels our animus. Our brains strain, trying to conjure something, anything grating before resigning in defeat. We can hate the Giants. We can really hate New Yorkers, but Eli, the face of the whole thing, inspires no genuine, visceral reaction. As a Patriots fan, there is no outlet. It’s a terrible feeling.

He was the NFL’s No. 1 Draft Pick and, along with his daddy, acted like a complete and classless douchbag in the process.
**FIXED**
February 8th, 2012 at 1:32 PM
If Cam Newton or Jamarcus Russell pulled the shit the Mannings pulled on draft day, no way in hell are they media darlings.
February 8th, 2012 at 1:35 PM
Likable? I guess he’s not unlikeable, but I find Eli to be incredibly boring. Has he ever said anything interesting/funny?

What is this shit?

Is this real? Are you fucking with us with this post?

I dislike him for his whiny antics on the field, and his general disposition while playing the game. Nothing is ever his fault.
February 8th, 2012 at 1:37 PM
At least we’ll get JDiddy3000′s take on Eli later this afternoon.
February 8th, 2012 at 1:37 PM
Jamarcus will always be a media darling, no matter what he does.
February 8th, 2012 at 1:38 PM
I’m sure the Raiders in retrospect wish JaCarcass had pulled an Eli.
Archie, Peyton and Eli are all know in New Orleans as classy, low-key people. I can’t blame Archie for not wanting his son to play under A.J. Smith.
I seem to recall Elway doing the same thing with the Colts, as well as Kobe with the Hornets.
February 8th, 2012 at 1:38 PM
His wife is attractive, but from real life.
Is Gisele a hologram or something? What’d I miss?
February 8th, 2012 at 1:38 PM
This.
And I add more hate because he plays for my least favorite team, possibly in all of professional sports.

Archie was my favorite Saint growing up, and I think he went over the top on draft day. However, not wanting his son to play for A.J. Smith seemed like the right call. I mean, they dumped Brees (perhaps understandably). They let Michael Turner and Darren Sproles walk away and rode L.T. until the wheels fell off. Vincent Jackson holds the team hostage every season. And they hired Norv FREAKING Turner.
Archie was right. Doesn’t mean he did it the right way.
February 8th, 2012 at 1:45 PM
Christopher Walken looks positively happy in that picture, even with that vise handle poking up into his peen.
February 8th, 2012 at 1:45 PM
I hate him because he’s on the Giants, but he seems like a normal plain dude.

Archie gets a lifetime pass for putting up with John Mecom’s horrible cast of GMs and coaches for 11 seasons.
February 8th, 2012 at 1:48 PM
Until he faces a real team in the Super Bowl (no, post-Spy gate Pats teams don’t count), we’ll never know what kind of QB Eli really is.
He’s probably really good. I just wish we could find out.

I don’t really recall what Eli’s wife looks like, but as long as she doesn’t look like an emancipated Steffi Graf, I’ll agree with you.
February 8th, 2012 at 1:48 PM
Was that the whole reason he didn’t want him there? I thought it was because it was San Diego as opposed to New York and they didn’t want Pey Pey and Elisha in the same conference.
February 8th, 2012 at 1:49 PM
That’d be, “emaciated.”
February 8th, 2012 at 1:50 PM
Cooper never cried his way out of San Diego, I’ll tell you that much.
February 8th, 2012 at 1:50 PM
Interesting take…
February 8th, 2012 at 1:50 PM
Was that the whole reason he didn’t want him there? I thought it was because it was San Diego as opposed to New YorkI’m under the impression that Archie recognized the front office in SD for what it is and didn’t want Eli to suffer the way he had.

February 8th, 2012 at 1:52 PM
Damn, that is dead on
February 8th, 2012 at 1:52 PM
Interesting note about that draft day…
AJ Smith had nothing in place. Said “Fuck it” and took Manning (to the surprise of some in the draft room)…and then just sat there waiting. Giants took Rivers (without ever calling the Chargers first), and then called the Chargers to make a deal.
He’s lucky it worked out.
February 8th, 2012 at 1:52 PM
Better than most?
February 8th, 2012 at 1:53 PM
I think it was just because he saw San Diego as a clueless franchise.
You have to remember that Archie was the guy who was the Saints radio color analyst when Peyton was coming out, and he said during a broadcast (in a roundabaout but unmistakable way) that he didn’t want his Peyton to be drafted by the Saints.
February 8th, 2012 at 1:54 PM
Really? Firing a coach who had his team at 14-2 and replacing him with Norval Eugene Turner to oversee a backwards march to 8-8?
February 8th, 2012 at 1:54 PM
Why don’t more people complain about how the hell Gisele has made that obscene amount of money. How the hell does that work?

February 8th, 2012 at 1:56 PM
Well its a good thing Sean Payton is a better person than Archie and Nick Saban was a horrible coach.
February 8th, 2012 at 1:56 PM
My favorite Archie moment came when, during a lull in play, he starts talking about the catwalks and such in the Superdome roof, and Jim Henderson says, “You seem to know a lot about the Superdome roof” and Archie replies, “Well, I saw a lot of it during my playing days.”
February 8th, 2012 at 1:56 PM

He’s probably really good. I just wish we could find out.
I know right? Baltimore won the game on a Lee Evans catch but I guess the game had to continue for some odd reason. It would definitely have been a tougher game with the Ravens, that’s for sure.
February 8th, 2012 at 1:56 PM
If Cam Newton or Jamarcus Russell pulled the shit the Mannings pulled on draft day, no way in hell are they media darlings.
I’m on this bandwagon. It just seemed like lil bro was using his big bro and dad’s influence to get his whiny way. If it wasn’t for big bro, lil bro’s lunch money would’ve been stolen everyday in school.
Still on the “I hate Elway for big-timin’ Balmer” bandwagon.
February 8th, 2012 at 1:56 PM
Why don’t more people complain about how the hell Gisele has made that obscene amount of money. How the hell does that work?
because she’s a fashion model, and one of the top ones. And those jobs pay a lot of money. And she’s been one of the top models for what, maybe 15 years? So she gets a lot of money and is in high demand.
February 8th, 2012 at 1:57 PM
Well it also somewhat worked out.
February 8th, 2012 at 1:57 PM
Manning got a pass from the start on that though. It didn’t take him years to live it down in the media. The media just ignored it.
February 8th, 2012 at 1:57 PM
At least he replaced him with Rivers, instead of choosing Culpepper over Brees.
Nice work Dowfeens.
February 8th, 2012 at 1:58 PM

February 8th, 2012 at 1:59 PM
First off, that was during the Ditka era. Archie was right about the Saints back then.
Second, the comment came during a game when Doug Nussmeier was the quarterback in the game at the time. The Saints were horrible at QB back then and clueless as a franchise. At the end of the Nussmeier game he said, “You know, people ask me if Doug Nussmeier is the future quarterback of the Saints franchise. My answer is ‘I sure hope so.’”
Followed by an awkward silence from Jim Henderson.
February 8th, 2012 at 1:59 PM
I may be in the minority, but my favorite combo was the white jersey-black pants/black jersey-white pants combo they wore in the late ’70s to mid-’80s.
Also in the minority: that ’79 team remains my favorite, for some reason.
February 8th, 2012 at 1:59 PM
BTW – thanks for the heads up on he license photo – reminded me to check the expiration.
Of course, in GA it’s good for like 25 years. Got my current renewal about 6 years ago and still have 6 more. I need to make sure I go for renewal when I’m 79 so it’s good til I’m 104.

Funny story. The Japanese actually experimented with various methods of spreading biological agents in China to kill off portions of the population during WWII. It was called Unit 731.
The things they did were pretty messed up. In addition to experimenting with different ways to spread biological matter over wide areas, they also sought to see how different formulations affected the human body. They did so by performing a vivisection on infected patients without anesthesia.

Well, we wanted a biological and chemical weapons program of our own.
This is not all that different from Operation Paperclip, which was the expatriation of German rocket and defense scientists to the U.S. at the end of WWII. Werner Von Braun, for example, participated in many projects which involved the use of slave labor. But he was let off the hook because he was also the creator of the V2 rocket program.

spencer, I know. I wrote a research paper about it last year for my graduate program. In some ways, the actions of Unit 731 are even worse because they were swept under the rug after the war. The first books on the subject only started appearing in the 1970s and 80s. Lt. General Ishii, the long time commander of the program, is still thought highly of in medical circles in Japan. It is just very unsettling to read about what they did and how little it seemed to bother them.

In one of the books I read, there were interviews with personnel who were attached to 731. Everything from technicians, to nurses, to doctors, to guards. Some of them were anonymous still, others gave their name. Most of them exhibited quite a bit of sadness at what they had participated in. Some lamented the methods used, but tried to justify the overall goals they were seeking to achieve. I recall an interview with a doctor who said that every time he cut into a patient, it got a little easier.

No argument here. I think the other fascinating thing about Unit 731 is how little most people know about it. I’ve been reading about World War II history for years, but prior to researching Unit 731 for a research paper, I’d never come across it. This stands in stark contrast to what even casual readers of World War II know about people like Josef Mengele.

A valid point, though if one looks at the atrocities committed on all sides in World War II, I think there are more commonalities that we would otherwise like to admit.
and for all the stories of german u-boats, you almost hear nothing about the japanese navy. the sub i-8′s crew massacred all sorts of ships in just HORRIBLE ways…like tying a bunch of crewman to the back of a sub and then submerging. horrible shit.
I had not read that before, but honestly it reminds me of atrocities that slave ship owners used to commit during the peak years of the Atlantic Slave Trade. It was common practice, if a group of slaves were ill, to bound them together, attach an anchor or a sack of cannonballs or anything else heavy, and then drop it over the side, bringing the bound slaves with them.

February 8th, 2012 at 3:29 PM
don’t like your own kind, eh?
Ha. Even without the previous meme, you could still make a joke out of it considering my soon to be wife is hispanic.
February 8th, 2012 at 3:30 PM
I am currently super attracted to the black dude trainer on The Biggest Loser.
I dont think Ive ever found a Hispanic attractive, or an Asian.
February 8th, 2012 at 3:30 PM
im not calling you racist, im calling you a liar.
TWO black chicks you find attractive? TWO? stop sandbaggin.
1990s Tyra Banks and some girl whose name I can’t remember. That’s it.
February 8th, 2012 at 3:31 PM
I’ve dated white women, black women, redheads … the one thing I can say with confidence about women is that they all go batshit insane at some point, even if it’s only momentarily.
Especially the redheads.
February 8th, 2012 at 3:31 PM
What about quadroons?
February 8th, 2012 at 3:32 PM
as long as tyra banks is on there, im cool with it…she took my teenaged fapping cherry with her 1996 swimsuit issue cover.
February 8th, 2012 at 3:32 PM
Aisha Tyler? Gabrielle Union?
February 8th, 2012 at 3:33 PM
What about quadroons?
Now that you mention it, Lana is pretty hot.
February 8th, 2012 at 3:33 PM
Seriously, how can you look at Halle Berry and not get all sweaty?

After I got engaged, my Dad took me aside and gave me some advice should I ever get distracted by another woman. He said anytime you see a beautiful woman, just remember that somewhere there’s a man who’s tired of her shit.
February 8th, 2012 at 3:36 PM
spencer, you like the Republicans eh?
February 8th, 2012 at 3:37 PM
hot crosses party lines…i like to consider myself a neo-whig.
February 8th, 2012 at 3:38 PM
Hot does indeed cross party lines. I was a fan of Dana Perino when she was the press secretary.
February 8th, 2012 at 3:39 PM
it was the haircut, wasn’t it?
February 8th, 2012 at 3:40 PM
rihanna, beyonce, the dj from salt n pepa, most of en vogue, r&b singer with the big fro whose music i really like….
there are a lot of black ladies i’d let have me
February 8th, 2012 at 3:40 PM
What can I say, she wore it well.
February 8th, 2012 at 3:41 PM
Insanely attracted to a girl with auburn hair now. This is new.
February 8th, 2012 at 3:41 PM
I do not get the attraction with Rihanna. Beyonce does nothing for me personally, but I can see why people would think she is hot. But with Rihanna, I fail to see any redeeming value at least as far as physical beauty goes. She’s not ugly, but she ain’t pretty either.
February 8th, 2012 at 3:43 PM
She can get it…even in a coked out mugshot kinda way…
February 8th, 2012 at 3:43 PM
Hot does indeed cross party lines.
that insanely right-wing asian lady is nice. mary something?
February 8th, 2012 at 3:44 PM
agreed.
February 8th, 2012 at 3:45 PM
No no, she’s definitely ugly.
February 8th, 2012 at 3:45 PM
Agreed. She looks like a bigger version of Lil Bow Wow.
I am currently infatuated with the Fully Baked chick on FX. She defines sexy.
February 8th, 2012 at 3:45 PM
are we allowed to include family members of politicians in this? because pakistani PM benazir bhutto’s niece, fatima bhutto is hot.
February 8th, 2012 at 3:46 PM

Elaine Chao?
Kidding. I think you mean Michelle Malkin. She’s kind of hot if you catch her from the right angle.

Ha yes. Her holding the cake and then putting it down while saying abruptly “This cake is heavy” in her Russian accent followed by a smile…hawt.
February 8th, 2012 at 3:48 PM
It’s amazing how many insanely right-wing women are insanely hot … Palin, some of the Fox News Barbies.
Not Ann Coulter, though. She’s just insane.
February 8th, 2012 at 3:50 PM
Hot enough to explode?
February 8th, 2012 at 3:50 PM
Not Ann Coulter, though. She’s just insane.
I read on a blog once that if you fuck her in the ass, she turns into a dragon and then snaps off your dick.
/true story
February 8th, 2012 at 3:51 PM
I concur on Rihanna, but Bouncy? She gits mah tiger growling,
February 8th, 2012 at 3:53 PM
Pam Grier, any time in the period from Scream, Blacula, Scream through Jackie Brown. All-time.
February 8th, 2012 at 3:55 PM
Does that make you a Van Buren Boy?
February 8th, 2012 at 3:55 PM
they don’t have shit on the MS/CNBC chicks. the one they used to do financial stuff on Morning Drive on the golf channel was a total smokeshow.
February 8th, 2012 at 3:56 PM
She has that chilly, intellectual vibe, but I’d like to boil Condi’s rice.
February 8th, 2012 at 3:57 PM
while Rhihna may not be the prettiest girl in the world, she does have the “I will wreck your dick in 5 seconds” look to her. she has quite the ass as well.
February 8th, 2012 at 3:58 PM
Lauren. London.
February 8th, 2012 at 3:58 PM
Do yall really want your dicks to be wrecked? Sounds painful.

figure of speech. i guess you could say it means she looks like she’d enthusiastic fuck… isn’t just going to lay there like a log.
/could be wrong
//know it’s a compliment though
February 8th, 2012 at 4:03 PM
Think of it more as “worn out from use” rather than “fracture penis”.
February 8th, 2012 at 4:03 PM
I mean, it’s better than laying there like a sack of flour.
so yes, when the opportunity arises, I prefer my dick to be wrecked in every way imaginable.
February 8th, 2012 at 4:04 PM
I am filled with glee. This is better than fawning over the evil hoodie
February 8th, 2012 at 4:05 PM
She’s got thug life tattoed on her knuckles. She will treat your dick like she’s trying to rip a carrot out of the ground.
February 8th, 2012 at 4:05 PM
If the “let them score” strategy worked, that would have been almost as unbearable.
February 8th, 2012 at 4:05 PM
I am filled with glee. This is better than fawning over the evil hoodie
i concur. fuck the patriots.
