the San Francisco Giants are having Bruce Lee night on Sept. 4th
This sounds so awesome that I’m almost certain at the last moment they’ll replace it with Keith Carradine night.
a receipt for $67 at Taco Bell at 3 am after the Super Bowl
That’s nothing. I’ve met people who dropped that much after junior proms.

“Video shows officers beating motorist in diabetic shock.”.
you need to take a break from linking to (or embedding) beatings, fights, etc. I’m going for a personal moratorium after the one I couldn’t help but click on at the smoking gun this morning.

February 8th, 2012 at 8:41 AM
The Wildcats are the best team in college basketball, the only question is whether or not they’ll lose in March because of their over-reliance on the driblle-drive offense that can misfire against veteran defenses.

This is a thing?
February 8th, 2012 at 8:42 AM
when did the middle finger become offensive?
you might want to throw the word “first” in there between finger and become. Because according to that link, the answer is the fourth century.

Considering he lost his last reelection by 17.2% I am baffled.
February 8th, 2012 at 8:45 AM
is anyone else baffled that this guy not only gets votes, but is winning states?
Not really. They clearly don’t like Romney (the unofficial pick). They don’t like Newt (who is sinking fast). And they sure as hell don’t like Ron Paul (who’s like every cranky old man you can think of). So by process of elimination…
It’s all for naught. It’s Romney.
February 8th, 2012 at 8:46 AM
The really stupid thing about the Missouri one is that it didn’t even count. The real primary is part of Super Tuesday, I’m not sure what the point of yesterday’s voting was. Santorum was the only one that even tried to win it so that he could bolster his flagging campaign with a “win”.

but it’s the NCAA, where veteran teams that can hang with an athletic team like Kentucky don’t exist. they play at Vanderbilt on saturday and they are the oldest team in the SEC, so that should be a barometer. Kentucky is huge on defense too, so finding a veteran team that can stop the dribble-drive as well as be able to shoot from outside is going to be tough.

This has to be an NFL hangover column: Short field goals should only be worth two points!
The NFL would prefer to discourage long field goals honestly. Teams gagging at the 35-42 and putting in those 50 yarders is not exciting. Short field goals are a fact of life.
I like doing away with extra points.
February 8th, 2012 at 8:54 AM
i wonder that if Romney was the only candidate if he’d ever be able to break the 50% barrier. not sure how any GOP candidate feels they can win when more than half their voting block doesn’t like them.

Hey Scripty … I’m afraid to click the link for fear I may catch something. Explain?
February 8th, 2012 at 8:57 AM
i think they should move the extra point back to the 20 yard line to make it interesting, but keep the 2 point conversion at the 2 yard line.
that way, the 7 points for a TD is no guarantee and could see some interesting scores decided by a point if a XP is missed.

Re: Dow approaches 13,000
The market is forward looking and sees a much more business friendly and fiscally responsible administration taking office in November. Also doesn’t hurt that debt saddled euro zone countries have had more successful debt auctions lately with good demand and lower rates.
February 8th, 2012 at 9:00 AM
The market knows who will win in November? That is amazing shit.

her face has always been so busted that her titties have just been merely an afterthought.

except for all the times that it’s reactionary because of something Obama said or did, right?

The market is forward looking and sees a much more business friendly and fiscally responsible administration taking office in November.
What?
So if a democrat is in office and the market is doing well = it’s because it can see into the future, but if it does well when a Republican is in office = it’s because a Republican’s in office. Got it.

February 8th, 2012 at 9:07 AM
yeah, nothing wrong with it now, but if changes were made that’s what i’d like to see.
first they have to deal with the 12 men on the field penalty and get their shit together with defining a catch.
February 8th, 2012 at 9:07 AM
“Good to see rampant speculation is still the driving force behind the economy.”
Talking about the market, not the economy.
February 8th, 2012 at 9:08 AM
Love the “fiscally responsible” republicans that conveniently forget the 8 years prior to Obama that were anything but.
February 8th, 2012 at 9:08 AM
They should probably have different rules for it after 2 minute warnings, like they do with a lot of things, right? It’s an easy way to defend when you have 5 yards to give and allow you to eat clock.
February 8th, 2012 at 9:09 AM
I know, I’m very excited. Another 2 years of this and my 401k will be back to where it started in ’08. Yeah baby!!!!
February 8th, 2012 at 9:09 AM
They should probably have different rules for it after 2 minute warnings, like they do with a lot of things, right? It’s an easy way to defend when you have 5 yards to give and allow you to eat clock.
yeah… I’m just pretty surprised we haven’t seen teams expose this loophole. I mean, the Giants could have theoretically thrown 18 guys on the field every play for the Patriots last drive, right?
February 8th, 2012 at 9:09 AM
don’t worry, it’s just the panic of the GOP knowing they don’t “own” any issues heading into the election and this is what comes out.

done. although lohan bores me just about as much as shitty politics. can we talk about how sad I was when I found out Katherine McPhee married some balding producer?
February 8th, 2012 at 9:11 AM
Yeah, for some reason having incrementally more players does nothing to worsen the penalty. They should call it ‘more than 11 men on the field’.
February 8th, 2012 at 9:12 AM
And eventually the Pats would have been 1st and goal inside the 5 yard line with one more untimed down.
February 8th, 2012 at 9:12 AM
Well I made the next cutdown on this job posting; 100 applicants, 30 interviews, made the cut to 10 people (for 1 spot).
February 8th, 2012 at 9:12 AM
5 yard penalty, automatic first down and no time off the clock.
enough to discourage the practice
February 8th, 2012 at 9:12 AM
first they have to deal with the 12 men on the field penalty and get their shit together with defining a catch.
the first one is an easy fix ( you get the time back) and the second one is near impossible to fix without replaying every catch.
I’m ready for an eye in the sky referee and an eye in the sky umpire where the stadium flashes yellow when they throw their flag ( a la Rollerball).
They’ve also got to “fix” pass interference.
February 8th, 2012 at 9:12 AM
Although I guess if you are being blatant about putting 18 guys on defense, they could call an unsportsmanlike penalty?
February 8th, 2012 at 9:13 AM
And eventually the Pats would have been 1st and goal inside the 5 yard line with one more untimed down.
no. not when there was only 40 or so seconds left. each play chews up time that you don’t put back on the clock.
February 8th, 2012 at 9:13 AM
I enjoy the fact that her show is called smash, cuz she looks like she could use a good smashing. That balding guy either must have serious game or serious dough, my money’s on the latter.
February 8th, 2012 at 9:13 AM
I heard the job growth in December was larger than economists predicted. Warm weather being among one of the factors. That in turn gave the market a little more optimism.
February 8th, 2012 at 9:14 AM
Game will not end on a defensive penalty.
February 8th, 2012 at 9:14 AM

February 8th, 2012 at 9:14 AM
the Giants could have theoretically thrown 18 guys on the field every play for the Patriots last drive, right?
somebody somewhere linked to the rule where the referee has much leeway in extraordinary circumstances to award tremendous penalties. I forget where and who, but it goes back to a Cotton Bowl game where a kid on the sidelines tackled an already broken away offensive player, and the ref awarded a touchdown.
February 8th, 2012 at 9:14 AM
And eventually the Pats would have been 1st and goal inside the 5 yard line with one more untimed down.
yeah… you bleed the clock down to close to zero, and on the last play you only have 11 guys out there.
February 8th, 2012 at 9:15 AM
I know, I’m very excited. Another 2 years of this and my 401k will be back to where it started in ’08. Yeah baby!!!!

Two, Valor Christian football is well-hated in state HS football circles, and was recently voted out of their conference. They’ve been open less than 10 years, but have multiple state titles amid rumors of rampant recruiting and other shady acts.

Hooray! So, they will be at the bottom of another football conference, but now they won’t win any men’s basketball titles either. “Memphis, meet DePaul”.

February 8th, 2012 at 9:16 AM
yeah, 20 yard or half the distance to the goal, automatic first down.
February 8th, 2012 at 9:16 AM
Well….the ban would be for smoking in your car when you have young children present. Which, if you’re any kind of a decent parent, seems like common sense to not smoke in an enclosed, moving box while your kids are present with you.
February 8th, 2012 at 9:16 AM
An over-reliance on getting to the bucket via dribble is not their problem. Neither is going against “veteran” defenses. They struggle against packline/sagging defenses when they aren’t making shots and when the ball sometimes sticks. Plus, the last 2 years they’ve really scrapped the DDM and moved more towards sets. Only really see DDM principles when the play breaks down and they are on attack. Cal always has one of the best defenses in the country so that’s never really a concern.
February 8th, 2012 at 9:17 AM
Speaking of… Clay – The guy who we used to refinance a few years ago called me up last night and offered up 3.875% for the home loan.
that’s way, way, way too high for right now. But he’s probably desperate. Despite our cash poor state over here, we’re going again and buying down to 2.875.

You mean the person who has been president the past three years when corporate profits & revenues are at an all time high? The S&P has gone from 676 in March of 09 to 1347 yesterday and 3.7 million private jobs created in the past three years? Yeah, he’s done.
February 8th, 2012 at 9:18 AM
That’s a slightly dubious statement.

This morning I passed a lady smoking a cancer stick in her car… she had the “fight breast cancer” GA license plates. Can’t make this stuff up.
February 8th, 2012 at 9:19 AM
I think that if a team tried this by the third 12 men on the field flag the referees would throw an unsportsmanlike conduct flag and that would quickly end the shenanigans.

I dream of a day when I have enough equity in my house to refinance at a rate like this. about once a year I get teased by a re-fi, then I am slapped back into reality with the 1% of equity I have in my house.
February 8th, 2012 at 9:22 AM
do you have to pay down 20% every time you refinance or is your equity enough to cover that?
February 8th, 2012 at 9:22 AM
I think that if a team tried this by the third 12 men on the field flag the referees would throw an unsportsmanlike conduct flag and that would quickly end the shenanigans
yeah… dirt said the same above… and that makes sense… it was just odd to think that nobody’s tried to get away with it before, but perhaps this is the reason.
I know a few years ago Brett Bielema pissed off Joe Paterno something awful… there was only a few seconds left in the first half… UW had just scored… and instead of kicking it away to PSU, UW was just intentionally off sides on every kickoff, thus bleeding the clock down to 0 (the clock used to start when the ball was kicked). CFB changed that rule I believe.
February 8th, 2012 at 9:22 AM
Per KenPom they have the top offense this year so far. Not sure I’m buying the “tough defenses in the tournament will shut them down theory”, though I will be rooting for them to fail.

Ha. Well I’m the senior person on my team of analysts but sometimes these moves have inter-office politics, and they use the one job posting to identify people for other jobs coming throughout the year they won’t post. Like I’ve been selected/told to move around 3x in 7 years but haven’t had to interview for a new role in 7 years.
February 8th, 2012 at 9:23 AM

Yeah, and I get the sense that either party can be prone to bagging an election against a sitting POTUS, biding their time until the 8-year reign is over. I hate that. I don’t necessarily love Romney as a candidate (and who knows who he will take as a VP running-mate).
Wish I had a better alternative. Paul and Gingrich? No, thank you.

cj – in all seriousness, while there’s a shitton of oil in the shale up there, the popular process used to extract it right now is fracking. and, fracking is very controversial since some vigorously claim it’s environmentally dangerous.

i don’t think it’s “bagging”, Romney could be extremely popular if he didn’t change everything he’s ever said to kowtow to the gop base, and the way the gop congress has been acting doesn’t help anyone, but has less impact on Obama since the gop candidates are in line with the gop congress.

We had the fortune of selling our old house at a nice gain just prior to the housing market crash. We had the misfortune of buying a new house prior to the housing market crash. I don’t know enough about it to say whether it is or isn’t, but since they have been doing it around here the amount of “earthquakes” has increased dramatically. pumping water at high pressures back into the ground can’t be all that good, environmentally speaking.

People in OH and PA are losing their minds over the natural gas and some of the other drilling opportunities. Everybody out to drink everybody’s milkshake, the envirionment be damned.

Can someone smarter than I explain why the administration is so dead against the Pennsylvania pipeline idea? Are the environmental ramifications that bad? It could give one of my family members a job closer to me.
The reason given is that the administration didn’t feel they had enough time to evaluate the environmental ramifications, so the prudent thing to do is not allow it to go forward. I suspect the real reason is they think it will be an environmental nightmare, but can’t say that politically.
February 8th, 2012 at 9:34 AM

Both of my parents smoked and I had/have asthma. The 70′s/early 80′s were awesome.

strip mining, mountain top blasting for coal, drilling at the very bottom of the ocean without a stopper, fracking. It’s always something. And it’s always bad.

…Romney could be extremely popular if he didn’t change everything he’s ever said to kowtow to the gop base, and the way the gop congress has been acting doesn’t help anyone, but has less impact on Obama since the gop candidates are in line with the gop congress.
These are two big concerns for me. Flip-flopping as a candidate is a red flag. And, Congress has put themselves in a ditch with stubborn partisanship.
Has Romney even intimated whom he’d consider as a running mate?

earthquakes are caused by stress built up in faults that’s released when the force from the stress is greater than the frictional force between the rocks in the fault. injecting fracking fluids into the ground at high pressures penetrates those faults and essentially lubes them up. more lube = less frictional force = greater potential for
premature ejaculationfrequent small earthquakes./jmorris

the ban would be for smoking in your car when you have young children present
I’ll never forget this … I was about 5 yrs old, on a road trip with my dad from MD to FL. He lit up a cigarette somewhere in VA. I started crying and told him I didn’t want him to die from smoking. He put it out and we went on our way.
When I think about that trip, I now know why he was such a crabby sonofabitch the rest of the week.

The last place I worked, I was friends with a guy who took up smoking (he was in his late 20′s at the time), so he could spend a little extra time with the Boss man outside when the Boss would go out to smoke. I wasn’t sure whether to be nauseated by the brazen asskissing or to feel bad for the guy for wanting to sacrifice his health for a few minutes with the boss.

My first college internship (’91) was at WPAFB in Dayton and you could still smoke in building stairwells at that point. Fucking dreaded when you had to skip the elevator for some reason. Couldn’t even imagine the “smoke at your desk” era, but the pics I’ve seen are amusing as hell.

In terms of the current construction of the rulebook, I agree. But, I think there is a case for review of the current rule given that in many instances the puck ceases forward motion during a spin-o-rama.
Again, there is no incentive for the league to review the rule, the move gets people out of their seats and makes the highlight shows.

As a PA resident I can tell you that more and more people are having serious concerns over fracking and want it to happen “somewhere else.” Our governor was elected by the gas companies, and he ran on gas creating jobs and opportunities. Well, all the jobs are going to out of state workers, PA has the lowest tax on gas in the nation, and the environmental problems are concerning even staunch Republicans around here. Just the other day he passed a law making people pay taxes on their online purchases, but refused to tax gas drilling.
Anyway, Gasland is a much watch for anyone interested in the downsides. The filmmaker clearly wants to make a point, but its not a Michael Moore film, either.

The PA pipeline issue isn’t about fracking – it’s about delivery of oil from Canadian tar sands to Texas to be refined. The issue with the pipeline they’re proposing is they want to pump the unrefined oil at higher pressure through pipes with thinner walls, which is untested at this point.
There’s also an issue with this pipe meeting up with other oil piplines in Nebraska, where a rupture could affect up to 30% of crops and water.
