The Sacramento Kings May Find a Home In Seattle
The Seattle Times obtained public documents showing that wealthy Seattle native Christopher Hansen and public officials in Seattle have been in discussions for months about the possibility of a new arena located near Safeco Field, as part of an attempt to obtain a NBA and NHL franchise, as the city has been without a winter sports team since the beloved Supersonics left for Oklahoma City.
The target? Well, the documents show that they have been monitoring the situation in Sacramento, where the woeful Kings are struggling off the court and on it. The Maloof brothers already had an aborted attempt to move the team to Anaheim, and there is a March 1st deadline set by the NBA for the city of Sacramento to present plans for financing of a new arena.
For the NHL, the league-owned Phoenix Coyotes may be the most likely target, as they would move to a more hockey-oriented area and create a natural rivalry with Vancouver.
I’m sure Stephen is now rushing to the computer to check the flight difference to Seattle instead of Sacramento. Jimmer Fredette may soon get to sit the bench in style in the Emerald City if these plans work out.

This would be awesome.

I wanna see this happen. Bring back the green and gold.

Seattle more hockey oriented than Phoenix? Pshaw I say!
February 7th, 2012 at 5:19 PM
Always thought it was weird that Sacramento had any kind of professional sports franchise.
February 7th, 2012 at 5:21 PM
I hope they move there and rather than just naming them the SupersOnics again they get scrappy new name. Something like the Bobcats or the Wizards. Or, even better, the Seattle Supersonics, Pt. II
February 7th, 2012 at 5:22 PM
Admittedly, I kinda expected the Maloufs to move the franchise to Vegas. I’ve heard the concerns about a team’s proximity to legalized gambling, but I’ll bet the Vegas area could support an NBA team.
February 7th, 2012 at 5:22 PM
Hypocrites. Fuck Seattle if they take Sacramento’s team.

Panthers.

Decent hockey following there, would be a better market than a number of current ones.
February 7th, 2012 at 5:23 PM
seattle NEWpersonics.
February 7th, 2012 at 5:23 PM
How exactly did Seattle become associated with going faster than the speed of sound? I know Boeing used to be based there, but that’s the closest connection I can think of.
February 7th, 2012 at 5:23 PM
Steve, don’t cum yet.
February 7th, 2012 at 5:24 PM
Dumb. Charlotte and or NO.
The whole point of the Anaheim deal was the absurd TV contract. As a 3rd team in LA it was still huge. New Orleans would be the lowest price on the market, would they not?
February 7th, 2012 at 5:25 PM
Decent hockey following there, would be a better market than a number of current ones.
Psst, Geeezeus, I was being sarcastic.
February 7th, 2012 at 5:25 PM
I think Seattle’s basketball history is a little bit more significant than Sacramento. Plus, Sacramento having a team at all seems kinda dumb. Seattle is at least a ‘major’ city.
February 7th, 2012 at 5:26 PM
sadly, more likely than the Coyotes. for some reason the league seems committed to losing money in PHX.
February 7th, 2012 at 5:26 PM
Such an intriguing click. It could go a number of ways…I’m going to hold off for now.

February 7th, 2012 at 5:28 PM
It’s harmless. Believe me, you just got to believe.
February 7th, 2012 at 5:28 PM
Isn’t any Kings’ move dependent on how the Maloofs see their future as owners? If they don’t want to sell — and the Seattle team don’t want out-of-towner owners — the move won’t happen.
What about the Bobcats? Charlotte is unenamored with them and they are slowly dying in obscurity. It’d be a shame for them to lose 2 teams but they clearly have no love for them?
February 7th, 2012 at 5:28 PM
Ha. I mean…. quit being a whiny bitch.
Heh. Nice recovery.
February 7th, 2012 at 5:28 PM
Sacramento is a drive-through city between the Bay Area and Tahoe. They don’t need a pro sports franchise.
They can still have the RiverCats though.
February 7th, 2012 at 5:29 PM
for some reason the league seems committed to losing money in PHX.
This could be part of it.
February 7th, 2012 at 5:31 PM
Nice. Never seen the film, but nice work by the X-Man.
February 7th, 2012 at 5:32 PM
Asian Dawn
i’d rather this over Nuprin.
The whole point of the Anaheim deal was the absurd TV contract. As a 3rd team in LA it was still huge. New Orleans would be the lowest price on the market, would they not?
It’s NOLA or Memphis.
Don’t think the NBA will move the Hornets. They’ve had plenty of chances. And I don’t think Stern will move this team.
February 7th, 2012 at 5:33 PM
The Lakers should probably move to Seattle, since they’ll always be playing in the Clippers’ shadow.

February 7th, 2012 at 5:35 PM
Could be the Panthers as you said, but what about the Devils?
February 7th, 2012 at 5:35 PM
/film needed a hotter actress though
I dont care about that — that soundtrack gave me “State Of Love And Trust” — top 10 song for me.
February 7th, 2012 at 5:36 PM
I liked Bridget Fonda at that time.
Kyra Sedgwick had a look, I guess, but not a look that I’m a fan of.
February 7th, 2012 at 5:38 PM
Could be the Panthers as you said, but what about the Devils?
Devils are in a shit load of trouble, but they’ll find a buyer.
February 7th, 2012 at 5:39 PM
I should rephrase — I dont necessarily disagree with the sentiment that there could have been a hotter actress (though I always liked Bridget Fonda — It Could Happen to You FTW!.
February 7th, 2012 at 5:39 PM
Good read on the Devils issues.
February 7th, 2012 at 5:41 PM
Bridget Fonda could get it, no doubt.
February 7th, 2012 at 5:43 PM
I liked Bridget Fonda at that time.
loved her in that assassin movie with Gabriel Byrne. Too lazy to Google. Double bonus for turning me to to Nina Simone from that soundtrack.
February 7th, 2012 at 5:43 PM
Oh I would totally play in Bridget Fonda’s garden, especially in Jackie Brown.
February 7th, 2012 at 5:43 PM
from @slmandel: If a 4-team playoff had existed since ’98, using BCS standings, the Big Ten would have hosted 3 of 28 semifinal matchups.
February 7th, 2012 at 5:46 PM
It’s a travesty that a great city like Seattle had its team robbed by a cow town like OKC. Only fair that they rob another franchise from a cow town like Sacramento.
February 7th, 2012 at 5:47 PM

February 7th, 2012 at 5:48 PM
I know Boeing used to be based there, but that’s the closest connection I can think of.
I believe they (boeing) were designing the first super sonic passenger jet at the time the franchise was awarded to the city… boeing ended up scrapping the project though, IIRC.

Devils can’t move. They just can’t. Jersey is a shithole but there’s too much history there to move that team.

You watch your tongue when referring to my homeland.
February 7th, 2012 at 5:53 PM
without having been to Sacramento, I’m still going to say that it is way better of a cow town than OKC though. OKC is a shit hole.
/cue up someone with the “bricktown is nice though” comment
February 7th, 2012 at 5:53 PM
I’m going to immensely regret getting excited over this… the more I think about it… the Bucks will be a prime candidate for relocation if Seattle gets a new arena and the Senator finally kicks the bucket.
Shit.
February 7th, 2012 at 5:54 PM
Jersey is a shithole but there’s too much history there to move that team.
Denver and Kansas City disagree.
The Cups carry some weight, but even during those years attendance wasn’t spectacular.
February 7th, 2012 at 5:54 PM
That’s what I thought too, but it’s too late in the day to have the desired pot-stirring effect.
February 7th, 2012 at 5:56 PM
Plus, Sacramento having a team at all seems kinda dumb.
They did have a passionate fan base, until ownership (the Maloofs) got “distracted”.
It was a good run in Sacto, but it’s almost over.

Realize this…there are barely any Devils fans anyway…if you live in South Jersey and parts of the middle, you’re a Flyers fan, if you live up north, you’re a Rangers fan. Who does that leave? Absolutely no one.
Case in point…fuck the Devils.

The KINGS aren’t going to Seattle you fucking morons. It’ll be the goddman hornets.
Seattle Hornets. I doubt Clay Bennet will sell you back the Sonics history because of the way he was treated at the end (Justifiably so).
February 7th, 2012 at 7:50 PM
I think there’s already an agreement in place that Seattle could keep the Sonics name, and that the team history would be jointly shared by both franchises. Or some such nonsense. I get pissed off about the Zombie Sonics. Seattle had that team stolen out from under them and everyone is supposed to be okay with it.
Well fuck that. Fuck Oklahoma. Fuck David Stern. Fuck Clay Bennett. And fuck Rumble the Bison.

Sacramento is a top-20 media market – bigger than NBA markets like Orlando, Portland, Indianapolis (which also has NFL), Charlotte (also has NFL), Milwaukee (I think technically also an NFL city), Salt Lake City, San Antonio, New Orleans (also an NFL city), Memphis, and Oklahoma City. It’s bigger than multi-team markets like St. Louis (three teams), Pittsburgh (three teams), Baltimore, San Diego, Kansas City, and Cincinnati. Of the top 25 media markets, only three don’t have multiple major sports teams. Sacramento is the biggest (the others are Orlando, and Portland) of those three markets.
February 8th, 2012 at 12:53 AM
I want this so much! But I won’t watch the NBA team until that fucker Stern is gone.
