Eli Manning was Incredible in 2011 and in the Playoffs and the Super Bowl, But Can We Hold Off on Talking About His Legacy?
Today will be a day spent discussing Eli Manning’s Legacy. We must immediately brand him with a ranking and an assessment, compare him to Peyton and Tom, to all who came before. Odes will be written; lines will be drawn. Hyperbole will be the order of the day. Did you scoff at those of us who suggested he was a pretty good quarterback despite the interceptions last year, because those buggers are so random and often result from actions of the receiver, bad bounces, or great defensive plays? No bother, that is now buried 100 deep in the internet search queries. Praise away. And if things change, that will be buried, too.
So what is Eli Manning’s Legacy? The first thing I could do is point out that declaring a Legacy now is antithetical; it is the transient move. Don’t believe me? What is Tom Brady’s “Legacy”? Is it different now than it was in 2001, or 2004, or 2007? (Don’t answer that, Eric Wilbur.) Something is not defined mid-painting, and it is the safer play to wait ’til the die is completely cast and then write as if it was all so certain to begin with. The perception of Eli – his legacy as people will say – can change due to himself, and of course due to what others outside his control do.
So what is Eli Manning’s Legacy? I could point out the word legacy is being used improperly in most circumstances in the sports world. I can find no definition that easily fits its use here. Legacies can be inheritances, or they can refer to those who attend a university of their ancestors. The most applicable would define a legacy as “something transmitted by or received from an ancestor or predecessor from the past.” There is no “what do sportswriters think of you” definition.
The true Manning legacy, then, is a shared one at quarterback from Archie to Peyton and Eli. Archie Manning never won squat in the NFL, no playoff appearances, a 35-101-1 record for his teams in games he started. Peyton and Eli have won plenty, and now the younger Manning has two Super Bowl titles, two late drives as an underdog, two of the more improbable wins at the outset of a playoffs in league history. What that legacy shows is that the quarterback cannot do it alone, no matter what. Manning has played great in the final key moments, and the Giants have also won two of the eleven Super Bowls where the winner had 21 points or fewer. Plenty of key plays were made to achieve that.
So what is Eli Manning’s Legacy? Whatever you want it to be, if we mean “how will he be remembered.” That’s your call. The NFL has a rich history, and no two stories are the same.
What I do know is this: In 2011, in a year of many great quarterback performances, Eli Manning was an elite quarterback, play in, play out (8.4 yards per attempt) and made big plays all season, with seven 4th quarter game winning drives. He made the plays all year to give the Giants a chance, even when they were struggling on defense, when the breaks were beating the boys.
No talk of writers upon the shifting sands of legacy talk in future years can change that. The rest? How we define someone, whether they are a Hall of Famer, that will take care of itself.

Legacy talk is dumb. How can you talk about how someone will be remembered when they’re still playing? What if Eli gets involved in some crazy point shaving scandal next year? What if he goes on to win the next 5 super bowls in a row?
February 6th, 2012 at 10:38 AM
We overrate Super Bowl titles (yeah, I said it) so he will probably be higher on people’s list than he should be. Peyton is better, Marino is better, Steve Young is better, etc… But since he has two titles, he’ll get the glory. That’s how it works.
February 6th, 2012 at 10:39 AM
Hell, Steve Young already wants to give him a yellow jacket.
February 6th, 2012 at 10:40 AM
He’s now twice as good as Trent Dilfer, but only half as good as Terry Bradshaw.
February 6th, 2012 at 10:40 AM
He’s what Peyton Manning would be. If he could beat Tom Brady.
February 6th, 2012 at 10:41 AM
I’ve said it before, I’ll say it till I’m dead and gone: Archie was 100 times better than the teams he was saddled with. If he had played for even a half-assed team, he’d be in the Hall of Fame.
February 6th, 2012 at 10:43 AM
Pats did a great job on him until the last drive. Give him credit.

February 6th, 2012 at 10:49 AM
I’ll agree with this somewhat. We overrate SB titles for QBs.

great points, something that will never make it into the minds of the writers of the world.
SB wins are a nice accessory to a career and legacy, but they don’t mean everything when all is said and done.
February 6th, 2012 at 10:50 AM
I’m going on the assumption that he won’t win another title as it’s only been done by what, 4 other QBs? If that’s the case, I suspect he’ll be in the HOF before he dies as he has two titles and played in NY.
February 6th, 2012 at 10:50 AM
If you think the Giants have the worst running game in the NFL, you might be JPP’s dad.
February 6th, 2012 at 10:51 AM
If Eli had 10 shitty years before he won the Super Bowl and then he was benched for Marc Wilson.

Johnnie Poe FTW.
February 6th, 2012 at 10:52 AM
Everybody who thought that Victor Cruz would be Miles Austin on crack, raise your hand.
Oh, and his greatness has NOTHING to do with a QB who can throw the ball to him.
February 6th, 2012 at 10:53 AM
i hate to say it but as long as the modern trend of offenses is wide open passing, NYG will be a force to be reckoned with in the playoffs with that DL. but i don’t think that his supporting cast is better, or anywhere near the same class as those steeler, cowboys and 49er teams.
February 6th, 2012 at 10:55 AM
Also, to be fair, that 8.4 YPP has a whole hell of a lot to do with Cruz ripping off 70 YACs after a 10 yard slant.
February 6th, 2012 at 10:55 AM
I’ll agree with this somewhat. We overrate SB titles for QBs.
And for defensive ends who move from one team loaded with Hall of Famers to another.

All I know is that in 2008, Plax shot himself and Eli had to go to battle with a bunch of youngins at receiver and still managed to do a pretty good job. And now those really young receivers are among the best corps in the league. That’s all that matters to me.

By 2011 you obviously mean 2010. So he led the league in picks in 2007 and then won the Super Bowl one month later (Feb 2008). And then he led the league in picks in 2010 and won the Super Bowl one year later (Feb 2012). Remarkable statistic.
February 6th, 2012 at 11:01 AM
bad timing.
February 6th, 2012 at 11:02 AM
Understand Legacy? Eli Manning does. The all-new 2012 Subaru Legacy.
February 6th, 2012 at 11:03 AM
It’s a busy day today, but I did want to react to the game.
Annoyed that they activated Ridley but were afraid to use him. I thought they had a pretty good gameplan but wished they’d have taken a few chances in the running game.
They had to use quick passes to negate the pass rush, and keep the Giants recievers in front of them, and they did both fairly well. They made one big mistake on defense (letting Manningham make that catch which wasn’t really that bad defense), and two on offense (the pick and the drop obviously. I was surprised the offense really couldn’t do more. I don’t have a big problem with how anyone played, but the lack of a downfield receiving threat, even in the context of a short-pass game plan, was pretty striking. Just a tough loss, for them to be so close, again.
February 6th, 2012 at 11:03 AM
Eli’s had five different leading receivers over the past 5 seasons – Burress, Hixon, Smith, Nicks, Cruz.
February 6th, 2012 at 11:04 AM
This too.
But seriously, it takes an all-timer of a defensive unit to people to even consider the idea that the QB is the sole member responsible for the win.
Dilfer and Johnson are the only two QBs in the last 20 years that fans dismiss. 36 QB rating for Roethlisberger? Elite!
Eli wins two of the 11 SBs where the opponent was held under 20 points? Elite!
Brady watches Adam Viniteri make a 45 yard FG in a Siberian blizzard and then drills another one in the Super Bowl? Elite!
Its amazing that we just forget about all this to shower the QB with praise/blame.
February 6th, 2012 at 11:04 AM
So if he leads the league in picks in 2012, he’ll win a title one decade later?
February 6th, 2012 at 11:07 AM
Herm Edwards was going crazy this morning about how bad that cover 2 defense was. The corner’s only responsibility there is to keep that wideout from beating him and he failed miserably. I didn’t think it was bad D either until Herm broke it down.
February 6th, 2012 at 11:09 AM
going crazy is business as usual for big herm.
February 6th, 2012 at 11:09 AM
It was a mistake for sure, and one of the few times they let a WR get past him, but it’s much more amplified by the situation. I will not be trusting Herm Edwards’ opinion on anything though.
February 6th, 2012 at 11:10 AM
It will be kind of refreshing not watching/listening/reading ESPN for the next two months.
February 6th, 2012 at 11:12 AM

I don’t like the comparisons to Jim Plunkett.
Plunkett was washed up if he ever was good in the first place, got to the right place at the right time, and then rode the coattails of Rod Martin, Jack Squirek, and Marcus Allen to easy Super Bowl victories.
Eli Manning beat a Hall of Fame quarterback everybody was ready to crown as the next Joe Montana in the Super Bowl because he led them to a 4th quarter comeback.
Twice.

February 6th, 2012 at 11:17 AM
Nice and measured reaction dude. Sucks. Maybe they can make it back before Brady hangs them up.
February 6th, 2012 at 11:18 AM

sure, for guys like dilfer and griese. it’s a case by case. to me though, if you are a major reason why your team won, and you played really well in the biggest game of the year, that is not overrated
February 6th, 2012 at 11:18 AM
Did he beat Brady? Or did the Giants? Mainly the Giants defense.
The fourth quarter doesn’t count any more or less than the other three, either. Is Brady any less good than Eli because he threw for 6 TDs against the Broncos before halftime, rendering the second half irrelevant?

February 6th, 2012 at 11:25 AM
clearly. that late INT where he stared down the WR for a good 5 seconds was totally a sign he’s matured as a player.
February 6th, 2012 at 11:25 AM
the pick and the drop obviously
you’re missing about two or three drops
February 6th, 2012 at 11:25 AM
So that makes what for him now, two good playoff performances? He’d have to get a lot better to be at Eli Manning’s level
February 6th, 2012 at 11:26 AM
I don’t see how this team doesn’t get better for a couple years. I even like the Moore/Arrington/McCourty/Dowling/Chung defensive backfield, if one or two takes a step up. They can’t keep missing on DBs and WRs in the draft, and they don’t have a ton of holes. Their defense to me isn’t as far away as I thought a few months ago. If they can get a decent pick for Hoyer, I’d actually think they are set up pretty well to finish out Brady’s career.
February 6th, 2012 at 11:28 AM
Matt Flynn’s reign of terror in the AFC East is about to begin friend
February 6th, 2012 at 11:29 AM
the giants have the perfect formula for super bowl runs from the coach down to the backup linemen, his gameplans get the most out of the team and each individual player, and I think what is lost in this Eli discussion is the fact that Coughlin is just as important to this team, if not more, than Eli.
February 6th, 2012 at 11:30 AM
this phrase just makes me sad
February 6th, 2012 at 11:30 AM
don’t worry…belichick will cut him before he gets too shitty.
February 6th, 2012 at 11:32 AM
pass rushing DE and a solid OLB will improve the defensive backfield greatly.
They are better off getting FA WR’s or trading for an established one that has the NFL experience to pick up the playbook.
more importantly, they have to start working on developing a feature back, which will make the TE formations even more potent and possibly extend brady’s career a couple years.

Is Carter coming back?
February 6th, 2012 at 11:34 AM
when Coughlin is on the verge of being fired, watch out!
February 6th, 2012 at 11:37 AM
Everything you said is true, and reasonably fixable. They have a nice core still. I’m even thinking Matt Patricia might be legit, with the way BB is giving him responsibilities. If you had told me going in that the defense would have played as well as it did, I’d have taken it. Giving up yards between the 20s and forcing the offense to run as many 3rd downs as possible (and get as many chances as possible to make a play on defense and get off the field) is classic Belichick MO. I thought all along “the first interception will lose the game” and it wasn’t necessarily true, but after everything, if somehow Brady could get a little more on that ball, Gronk had 5 yards on Blackburn. It’s strange to see a #93 intercept a ball 40 yards downfield.
February 6th, 2012 at 11:38 AM
hope so, thought he had a 1 year deal.
either way, even if he comes back, gotta plan for the next 5 years or so.
February 6th, 2012 at 11:40 AM
He’s got MANY years of playoff runs left. Just look at the starting QB’s in that division. It’s like the land of misfit toys. They win that division by default for the next 3 years.
February 6th, 2012 at 11:42 AM
How many more years are we projecting for Brady? 4 or 5?
In terms of AFC challengers, a lot of the old guard (Steelers, Ravens) are getting old. They should still be considered, though.
Among the up and coming teams, Houston is probably the most legitimate threat to challenge for the AFC title. No one else out of the South is good enough, and the AFC West is a shitshow unless the Chargers get their act together (Norv) or the Chiefs get a healthy Peyton.
That leaves the Jets, who aren’t a real threat until they get a new QB, and potentially the Dolphins, who weren’t terrible. For the next two or three years, the Pats will be the AFC favorites, and I think they get back once.
February 6th, 2012 at 11:43 AM
yeah, they just didn’t have the proverbial ball bounce their way at any point in the game… their success is largely dictated on that. had they recovered that fumble inside the giants 30 or welker was able to pull in a 2 handed catch, i’d be in a better mood today.
February 6th, 2012 at 11:44 AM
brady needs to get that left shoulder stabilized. his stats after the injury last night were something like 5 for 19. very important for generating velocity
February 6th, 2012 at 11:44 AM
He’s 34. I say he has three seasons left.
February 6th, 2012 at 11:44 AM
do people really see a dropoff for brady coming any time soon? he keeps getting better…team doesn’t get the same results, but he doesn’t have that beast D anymore. he’s still phenomenal tho and should be for the next three years at elast.
February 6th, 2012 at 11:44 AM
Yup, you can nitpick at one or two specific plays, but overall I was very pleased with the D.
Gronk had a step, and at his height, you normally assume he’d be able to go get the ball, but Brady couldn’t step into the throw, and gave his receiver no chance.
Overall, the Giants were the better team, and leading up to the game, anybody with a clear head could see that.
But, fuck man, why’d it have to be the Giants?
February 6th, 2012 at 11:45 AM
you don’t throw a jump ball to a guy who has high-ankle issues.
anyway, ballard was a fucking warrior yesterday
February 6th, 2012 at 11:46 AM
aside from a catastrophic injury I’d say 4-5 without a running game. with a running game that can take 25-30 carries off brady’s arm, 5-6 years is reasonable.

This is all I keep coming back to.
February 6th, 2012 at 11:52 AM
I wonder how that changes if they think Ryan Mallett is legit enough to not let him get away. He certainly has the tools, and after 2 more years under Brady/Belichick, I would think he’s about as good ‘a lock’ of a QB prospect as anyone. I almost think that whenever his rookie deal is up, that is when Brady is about done, unless they draft/develop/really like a new guy (very possible).
February 6th, 2012 at 11:56 AM
Its the way the scale works before it balances out. People have been talking about Eli’s legacy and ranking in the league since he took his first snap in the NFL, and often times it was negative. Now, there’s the premature talk of being a first ballot Hall of Famer. Eventually (hopefully for him), it will balance out and he’ll be allowed to play out his career just like every other player.
February 6th, 2012 at 11:58 AM
and, think about this. rumor is McDaniels took the OC job b/c he would be belichik’s successor. if BB is already thinking like that, 4-5 years down the line, i don’t see him giving up on brady before he retires unless it’s a brady/bledsoe or manning/luck situation. and I think both brady and belichik know their careers are intertwined at this point.
February 6th, 2012 at 11:59 AM
I dont see a lot of NE this year but Brady had a number of deep throws had too much air under them. Like he got spoiled w/ Randy Moss high-pointing them.
February 6th, 2012 at 12:06 PM
Not gonna lie – Coughlin is a hell of a coach, still not Belichek, but might be the 2nd best coach in the league.
