For college hoops junkies: A look back at the 1986-1987 Iowa Hawkeyes, who were very, very good.
Yeah, they were. Versatile bunch who really got after it on both ends of the court. For a few seconds, Roy Marble even got some “next Jordan” talk flung his way.
Tough news on George Hill. Indiana is competitive, and he is a key reason for their success so far.
The girls on Fear Factor who drank donkey semen talked about it on a radio show. NBC cut the portion from the show.
Another sign of the apocalypse? Jeepers, people are stupid. I bet they didn’t even win that episode (Or did they?).

Bar Refaeli
2nd best roundup pick of the year. Glorious.
February 1st, 2012 at 8:18 AM
Jason, the Hawks have a pretty cool history, hoops-wise. What about that Payne guy, was it Michael? Seem to remember he was a pretty good player also (early 80s). Lefty post player that could step outside on the wing as well.
Dr. Tom was one of the better coaches in the nation. He recruited like a a madman. Always seemed to have a roster stocked with talent.
February 1st, 2012 at 8:19 AM
I’ve read this four times and Kevin Pittsnogle is involved, but I don’t see how it’s a story.
Ars Technia has some good stories. They really had some helpful reporting on a # of the Anonymous and LulzSec takedowns. They owned the coverage of the HB Gary hack IMO.
February 1st, 2012 at 8:23 AM
Uh, no. He’s gay.
I loved that Iowa team, too. Dr. Tom was awesome. Man, he looks old now. Sad.
February 1st, 2012 at 8:25 AM
Happy National Signing Day!
February 1st, 2012 at 8:26 AM
something with that damn arena. horrible game. so many missed layups. oh, and good chance that Draymond Green is gone for the year. horrible for the team, feel terrible for him. one of Izzo’s best players, ever.
February 1st, 2012 at 8:27 AM
Vlad, it may be happy to you, but for me it’s fraught with sadness. My Memphis Tigers usually end up signing the guys SEC teams didn’t want.

Indeed they did and that was such a feel good story.
February 1st, 2012 at 8:31 AM
No way they get the 1st pick. Joe will pick a SF anyways.

Dang, arkbadger, the truth stings. I wanna laugh through my tears.
February 1st, 2012 at 8:32 AM
he did not look good sitting on the bench at the end of that game.
Arkansas is now 16-0 at home this year after a big win over Vanderbilt last night. now if they can just win a game or two on the road…
February 1st, 2012 at 8:35 AM
really hard to tell what it was. something below the knee, no contact injury. he couldn’t put any weight on it.
February 1st, 2012 at 8:36 AM
I know about nothing outside of Deangelo Williams and the Liberty Bowl about Memphis football, but you would think they would be able to at least put together a competitive team. since they do play at the Liberty Bowl, I’m guessing the rest of their facilities are crap too, which hurts a lot. Memphis (the city) puts out some pretty good HS football players every year.
February 1st, 2012 at 8:36 AM
Jason, good Roundup.
Appreciate that Iowa basketball link. Loved BJ Armstrong in his days at Iowa and then the Bulls.
looks better with a few more clothes on.
February 1st, 2012 at 8:37 AM

Caught the last 8 minutes of this game last nite. with this type of score, I thought they were using 15ft high rims and a court length of 180ft.
Big Ten basketball…..We’d Love to Have You!!!!
February 1st, 2012 at 8:42 AM
I know about nothing outside of Deangelo Williams and the Liberty Bowl about Memphis football, but you would think they would be able to at least put together a competitive team.
They’ve had some individual players over the years that were pretty good (Isaac Bruce, Mike McKenzie to name two).
Facilities are lacking. Liberty Bowl is outmoded & in a rough part of town. The current AD put more attention to the men’s basketball program during the Calipari days, at the expense of football and other sports.
The city does put out some good HS players, but they usually want to play at SEC schools (namely UT). Can you blame them? The exposure and competition in the SEC are strong draws.
February 1st, 2012 at 8:42 AM
Are Republicans really picking between Newt Gingrich and Mitt Romney? Really?

February 1st, 2012 at 8:43 AM
I’ll summarize the article: NCAA is dicks.
February 1st, 2012 at 8:44 AM
Nice Roundup TBL.
The NCAA has a “Focus Group” for men’s basketball right now and it is supposedly the lab rat for how they are going to amend the rulebook for all other sports. However, if it is an indication of things to come it’s a very bad sign. Instead of making things simpler, it is red tape at it’s worst.
February 1st, 2012 at 8:44 AM
I’ve never heard of her before, but the gallery seems to focus on stupid glasses on so I’m guessing that’s her.

Most certainly. Its the only show right now that I have to watch the night it airs. Everything else can take a bath in the DVR for a while.
February 1st, 2012 at 8:57 AM
i say they are on par b/c they are each the best of their format.
breaking bad – 1 season long arc being the main focus of the show from episode 1
justified – 1 or 2 season long arcs that is the background for much of the season while episodic and b story lines advance the characters through the first half.

this election cycle is about eliminating the fringe and mitt romney from the 2016 election, nothing more.
when the republicans lose this election there will be more distance made between the GOP and the far right, making them more moderate and electable when they put Christie on the ticket in 2016 against what will appear to be a relatively weak democratic field.

February 1st, 2012 at 9:08 AM
Memphis has some of the worst football facilities in the nation. they’re updating the weight room and practice fields so hopefully it will help. the Liberty Bowl stadium situation is a financial nightmare that doesn’t seem to have an endgame since the football revenue has declined significantly over the past decade.
a new AD will be coming in after summer 2012, I think, so we’ll see what happens then.
February 1st, 2012 at 9:09 AM
should have watched the Arkansas-Vanderbilt game that was on right after it.

That Sixers-Magic game the other night was a mess until it got to garbage time and the Magic made up some ground.
February 1st, 2012 at 9:12 AM
miz!
IMO, the new AD needs to champion an on-campus football stadium. Is that area east of Browning Hall semi-open?
Paying for such is nigh-impossible, but that would be a good step in demonstrating commitment for the football program.
Furthermore, the schedule needs upgrading, stat. Give the home folk marquee teams to see. You’re gonna suffer some blowouts early, but this is an uphill climb anyway.

February 1st, 2012 at 9:15 AM
I agree, but I’d hate to start thinking we’re going to pick candidates because they are “charismatic”. I’d like to think “qualified” would be a better quality to look for.
Or, in the case of the article in the link, the person making that assertion about Tim Cook was an ex-Apple employee who probably pulled down nice bonuses in his/her time their. I always think my boss is great on bonus day!

Stanley admitted to messing that up. He goes, “it’s not even a hard hole, it’s impossible to make 8 there.” Sounds like he’ll be fine.
Also, read Perkins talk about the dunk. He was basically like that’s what happens if you try to block shots in the nba, you’re gonna get doused now and then. Good to hear a few people not all whiny about being on the wrong end of a viral shitstorm.

February 1st, 2012 at 9:26 AM
an on campus stadium would be ideal because there’s some romance involved in being on campus for the game and seeing/walking by the academic buildings. but, truthfully, it’s not really that much of an advantage at Memphis because so much of the student population doesn’t live on or within walking distance of campus. on campus stadiums and arenas make great sense when you can count on a large, very local student population to walk to the game. but the Liberty Bowl is far enough away to have to drive and park in a seedy area. the FedEx Forum is even farther away and there’s no problem filling the student seats there.
February 1st, 2012 at 9:26 AM
Part of the problem for U of Memphis (or Memphis State for old school folks) is that they’re not the #1 big school in a small state. UT syphons the majority of the support and the money in Tennessee and leaves little for the rest of the schools around them. It’s similar to Louisiana and how LSU just rules over every other school around them.

Romney this year feels like Kerry in 2004 or Dole in 1996 — it’s your turn and we’ll give it you grudgingly because if you win, hey it’s a win. But I don’t get the sense they’re behind him like they would be for other candidates like Christie or even Palin.
As for Bobby, I think he’s focused on building his national GOP bonafides. From the sound of most people, the next hot thing title has been moved to Marco Rubio.

February 1st, 2012 at 9:31 AM
miz and bffredo, I wonder if an on-campus stadium, coupled with more dorm space, could make it more of advantage.
When I went there (’78-’83, in Browning Hall/Hayden Hall) we took a sort of perverse pride in being a commuter school. Maybe, now is a time for change, and some radical ideas may propel the school to greater heights.
And, the point about UT is pervasive. Other than most/some/part of Shelby County, the rest of the state will always be pro-UT. That’s just the way it is.
February 1st, 2012 at 9:33 AM

Can I ask the GOP’ers here: What was the deal with Mitch Daniels? I liked his stance on entitlement programs. He dropped out FAST.
Does he have any viability in 2016? Skeletons in the closet, etc?

Honestly, I could definitely survive with a netflix subscription and internet connection… the only thing is the live sports… I’d miss the NBA on TNT.

Would love to do this….the wife however….
I demand you change your name to Brad Clooney.
February 1st, 2012 at 9:44 AM
I do think Gosling must be included in this meme going forward.
What about Joseph Gordon-Gosling to replace Brad Clooney?
February 1st, 2012 at 9:46 AM
Legs begins and ends w/ Kiebler but I’ll ponder some others.

Im actually thankful I dont have the NFL network this week, hearing the things that come out of Marshall Faulk’s mouth might drive me to homicide
February 1st, 2012 at 9:47 AM
Love MLB Network. Blows ESPN out of the water, especially since they have my two favorites, Harold Reynolds and Peter Gammons. Fuck John Kruk.
NFL Network has never taken. I fucking hate Deion and Irvin, so maybe that’s why.
February 1st, 2012 at 9:47 AM

You guys, I’m critiquing the mona lisa… a critique does not mean I do not endorse the subject of my critique.
Whats the saying…? I’d crawl though a mile of feces and broken glass just to get near one of them.

I wonder if an on-campus stadium, coupled with more dorm space, could make it more of advantage.
It might increase the number of students, but not much money. Unfortunately, UM can’t compete with the size of UT or Vandy out west or Arkansas/Bama/LSU/UGA/the Miss schools around them. Not in football at least.
BUT I always thought UM could be a major basketball school (a la Kansas/Duke). The talent pool is deep enough and a smart coach can win there.
February 1st, 2012 at 9:47 AM
I think we have to keep the two masters. JGL isn’t on their level yet. Speaking of Gosling, this is mildly amusing.
February 1st, 2012 at 9:47 AM
He’s got zero charisma. Apparently, that’s not presidential. The guy runs a balanced budget and even operates in the black for Indiana. He’s cut some programs and funds, and caused some stir, and leasing the Toll Road for 75 years to a Dutch company was smart for the green, but that company is having financial problems and hasn’t really kept up the road.

There should be a slide show somewhere of when the women go on Letterman and show off the legs. Memorable include Longoria, Dreyuss, Anniston and the woman from Inglorious Basterds

Evangeline Lily went on Letterman and showed off her stems too… better than anything she ever did on Lost.

I suspended my Direct TV account for 6 months to see if I’d be able to go without. It’ll be cancelled soon enough.
And for pro sports watching, NBA, NHL & MLB all have their streaming packaged on Roku. Just have to live without your local teams. Silly blackout rules
February 1st, 2012 at 9:51 AM
Where did the Gosling come from?
Diane Kruger? She can get it.
February 1st, 2012 at 9:51 AM

I was looking at it from more of a humanitarian point of view, but your rebuttal certainly holds water.
February 1st, 2012 at 9:52 AM
I kinda disagree with some of this. SROD can correct me if I’m wrong though, but here goes. when I lived in Memphis, I was kinda surprised how different it was versus the rest of the state. it’s almost like there’s Tennessee, and then there’s Memphis, Tennessee. Memphis has its own personality. on top of that, the entire state’s population is 6.3 million while Memphis metro’s population is 1.3 million…almost 21% of the state’s population in that one area. there is major UT hatred in Memphis, like just straight up abhorrant loathing of UT. Memphis has the market size to REALLY support the school (the direct evidence is the long historical support of basketball), but the school doesn’t field a consistently competitive team to rally that support for football.

NFL Network has never taken.
They fucked up by putting their headquarters in LA… the one major city without an NFL team. Everything on that channel just seems forced. The reason MLB network works is because it’s a nice change of pace from the “seriousness” of baseball. NFL network “respects the brand” too much and any time they try to do something funny its just irvin and sapp laughing at their own terrible jokes. And mooch seems like a good guy, but he’s terrible on TV.

There is pretty much nothing Ryan Reynolds could do to remove himself from the number one spot in Hot Ryan’s but Ryan Gossling has managed to move way up.
February 1st, 2012 at 10:05 AM

It was Xerox SPARC, actually.

February 1st, 2012 at 10:07 AM

I couldn’t stop laughing at his dumb (fake?)accent/lisp in Crazy Stupid Love… and the clothes he wore that were painted on. Is he another one of these guys who’s real short? Seems like it. Ryan Reynolds is the only guy in Hollywood aside from Tim Robbins I know to be tall.
February 1st, 2012 at 10:07 AM
if they’re putting the hat on today, they’re most likely signing the LOI in front of a bunch of people today too. I’d put that percentage at no more than 5% are wearing a different helmet come fall.
February 1st, 2012 at 10:08 AM
Yeah, I dont know what happened. I hated “The Notebook” Ryan Gosling. But then I see Crazy Sexy Love and I couldnt stop thinking about him.

That pic was selected using the exclusive TBL bad picture algorithm. Yikes.
February 1st, 2012 at 10:10 AM
I’m pretty sure you’re just hating to hate. Blue Valentine, Ides of March and Drive were awesome. His role in Crazy, Stupid Love was supposed to be like that. He’s not short, either.
I feel like this needs a /no homo tag.

Awesome in Lars and the Real Girl.
Enjoy Gosling, thought Drive was waaaaay overrated, and laughed at the KSK Super Bowl pick link. They nailed it.

When you type “Ryan” into a Google search, the algorithm brings up “Gosling” before you type the second word. The next are “Dunn,” “Reynolds” and “Seacrest.”

Jack Ryan deserves mention here

Oh you’re right. There’s no love between Memphis, Knoxville and Nashville. I still remember how the state legislature got all pissy after UM beat UT and all of Memphis gave them the collective finger.
But that also works both ways. You don’t get much support outside of Memphis — and I’m talking Germantown or across the state lines. Lots of money people don’t much care for UM.
February 1st, 2012 at 10:18 AM
patriot games jack ryan > clear and present danger jack ryan > hunt for red octoboer jack ryan >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> ben whofleck

February 1st, 2012 at 10:22 AM
that’s kinda my point, though I didn’t articulate it well. Memphis doesn’t NEED the support outside of the metro area. it needs to field a competitive team in a decent venue and locals will jump right back on the wagon.
February 1st, 2012 at 10:22 AM
Kruger in Troy. That is all.

February 1st, 2012 at 10:27 AM
Now wait just a second here. You thought Alec Baldwin was a mediocre Jack Ryan? That is total crap, especially considering Red October is like 1B to Patriot Games’ 1A. Clear and Present Danger sucked and I’m not even going to discuss that other movie due to its awfulness.
February 1st, 2012 at 10:28 AM
You thought Alec Baldwin was a mediocre Jack Ryan?
he acted like a pussy for most of that movie.

February 1st, 2012 at 10:38 AM
one of the best parts about patriot games was that middle easterners or drug cartels weren’t the bad guys… it was the IRA. Bunch of gingers wreckin shit.
That red head that gets a couple bullets in her chest on the boat at the end could get it.
February 1st, 2012 at 10:44 AM
that’s kinda my point, though I didn’t articulate it well. Memphis doesn’t NEED the support outside of the metro area. it needs to field a competitive team in a decent venue and locals will jump right back on the wagon.
It’s all about getting the right coach. Someone who can go in there, energize the school and start turning the talent flow towards them. If Boise State or Rutgers can do it, no reason UM can’t.
So on the legs front, it’s: Kiebler, Refaeli, Beckinsale, Strahovsky, Laurent, Kruger?
February 1st, 2012 at 10:46 AM
my money’s still on keyra augustina.
February 1st, 2012 at 10:46 AM

As I straddle the fence, both miz and bffredo have it spot on.
But, until they win consistently, the bandwagon will have plenty of good seats. Dang shame, actually.
Personally, after dark when no one else is around, I admit I would rather them gone the Marquette or St John’s route – if you aren’t gonna fully support football, de-emphasize it and boldly declare yourself a basketball school.
Tommy West mentioned it when he got fired. He knew.
