Dozens of Fans Killed in Egyptian Soccer Riot
A gruesome Egyptian soccer riot following a match between club sides Al Ahly and Al Masry has left a death toll of 73 and counting, with more than 300 injured.
Al Masry fans streamed out of the stands onto the pitch following the match “throwing stones, fireworks and bottles” after their 3-1 win, chasing the opposing Al Ahly players off the field and attempting to force their way into the team’s dressing room. Some reports suggest the violence may have been pre-planned by a group of Masry ultras.
We’ll update as more information becomes available.
Update: Al Jazeera is reporting the Egyptian military sent helicopters to remove Al Ahly players and fans from Port Said.
Update: AP now estimates the injury toll at more than 1,000.

Way to go soccer.

Mubarak would’ve prevented this. Oh and nice sport.

So the country behaves relatively well during a massive governmental overthrow, but 73 people die at a soccer game?
February 1st, 2012 at 3:06 PM
Lara Logan disagrees.
February 1st, 2012 at 3:08 PM
She was alive to talk about it.
“Relatively” was the key modifier. Still, for a governmental overthrow in the fucking Middle East, Egypt did pretty well by Western standards.
February 1st, 2012 at 3:08 PM
wait, they behaved themselves well? there were no laws being enforced and criminals were spilling out of jails. there were religious clashes and terrorist group conflicts over territory. there wasn’t anyone to pick up garbage or perform other civic duties.
February 1st, 2012 at 3:09 PM
And replaced it with a government that is just as horrible!
February 1st, 2012 at 3:10 PM
Did you see this spence? Thought it was right up your alley.
February 1st, 2012 at 3:12 PM
Unrest in the Middle East? Why… I never… WHAT?!
February 1st, 2012 at 3:12 PM

African justice

Not getting into the semantics of which government is better or worse. Just saying that if you contrast Egypt, with, I don’t know, say, Libya, it’s not hard to see that Egypt is the better example. Didn’t think that was controversial.
Also, spencer, we behaved like that during a goddamn hurricane. Let’s not cast stones about how some people acted as a country collapsed.
February 1st, 2012 at 3:15 PM
we did not behave like THAT during a goddamn hurricane.
but agreed that compared with libya and syria, egypt’s was woodstock.
February 1st, 2012 at 3:15 PM
Don’t you dare bad mouth Hurricane Justice.
February 1st, 2012 at 3:15 PM
and i can’t really hate on egyptians for acting that way…i blame the corrupt, oppressive upper class that repressed the egyptian people for three decades.

I wonder if Bob Bradley is rethinking his Egypt NT gig. Lose badly and that may be your ending!

OK so gang raping and brutality isn’t that bad as long as you get out of there alive. Got it.

OK so gang raping and brutality isn’t that bad as long as you get out of there alive. Got it.
Wasn’t it you that tore me a new one for “taking every comment so seriously on here you dickface!” not too long ago?
February 1st, 2012 at 3:22 PM
C’mon, the Middle East really respects women and champions their rights.
February 1st, 2012 at 3:23 PM
In my first year criminal law class back in the day one of my roommates (who I caught watching me sleep once) during a discussion on rape laws said “most rapes last longer than a minute, that doesn’t seem so bad.”
Shockingly: this was at Penn State.
February 1st, 2012 at 3:23 PM
There might, MIGHT be a difference between lightening up about commenters making fun of you, and having a problem with saying gang rape ain’t no thang.
February 1st, 2012 at 3:25 PM
This has to be the guy from that story Spencer linked to that time, who drunkenly butt raped his friend in the middle of the night and called him a fag.
February 1st, 2012 at 3:26 PM
There might, MIGHT be a difference between lightening up about commenters making fun of you, and having a problem with saying gang rape ain’t no thang.
Because he was totally serious when he said that. Yep.
I mean really… pedophilia jokes are fine, but rape jokes aren’t? You guys have really changed.
February 1st, 2012 at 3:27 PM
Pretty sure he was, actually.
February 1st, 2012 at 3:29 PM
And replaced it with a government that is just as horrible!
Yep.
February 1st, 2012 at 3:32 PM
Exactly. Maybe it’s just me but I don’t think teasing a commenter for taking every joke at his expense seriously and making light of a situation where a woman was passed through a crowd of men who violently jammed their fingers inside her, ripped off her clothes to grope her breasts, ripped hair out of her head and pulled on her limbs as hard as possible aren’t equally comparable.
February 1st, 2012 at 3:32 PM
everything alright at home with you guys? you mad?
February 1st, 2012 at 3:37 PM
Maybe it’s just me but I don’t think teasing a commenter for taking every joke at his expense seriously
ha.. see what you want to see i guess
/refers you to the dozens of toddler jokes I make at my own expense
February 1st, 2012 at 3:38 PM
We need the commentator name guy to lighten things up in here with a new moniker.
February 1st, 2012 at 3:39 PM
making light of a situation where a woman was passed through a crowd of men
Is this any different than making light of a situation where young boys were sodomized? I mean, they’re both terrible. I’m just confused as to where the line is.

Help us Hope Solo Peehole. You’re our only hope.
February 1st, 2012 at 3:44 PM
the line draws its own conclusions.

it’s fluid.
February 1st, 2012 at 3:50 PM
I don’t think anyone marginalized the torment of kids being raped by saying they’re lucky to be alive. And if someone did it’s a cunty move. This isn’t so much a question of something being offensive as something being fucking stupid and called out.
February 1st, 2012 at 3:50 PM
Help us Hope Solo Peehole. You’re our only hope.
I’m not clever like that. I have shit stuff like Flutters PP.
February 1st, 2012 at 3:52 PM
That’s a pro bowl level of effort by those cops in riot gear.
February 1st, 2012 at 3:57 PM
I personally think calling someone ‘dickface’ is crossing the line. But that’s just me.
February 1st, 2012 at 3:58 PM
by saying they’re lucky to be alive
Not sure this is an endorsement of gang rape. Just a fact. She is lucky to be alive. At least that’s how I took it. Alas, back to the toddlers I go.
February 1st, 2012 at 3:58 PM
OK so gang raping and brutality isn’t that bad as long as you get out of there alive. Got it.
Clayton Williams thinks it can be downright enjoyable.
February 1st, 2012 at 3:59 PM
Alas, back to the toddlers I go.
I can’t believe I’m actually laughing at this. What have you people done to me?
February 1st, 2012 at 4:04 PM

Someone who’s not in on the joke is going to read that, alert the authorities, and I’m going to have about a dozen FBI agents waiting for me at my door when I get home from work. Awesome.

Could be worse … could be little skeletons.

The little skeletons will have to be put through a wood chipper.
