Liverpool Owners Were Attracted To $31 Million Signing By Faked YouTube Video [Update]
Five months in, Liverpool’s $31 million signing of Stewart Downing has been an epic fail. The man hired to pump balls into the box for Andy Carroll has more arrests, one, than assists since joining the club. He has looked a lot like, well, Stewart Downing when he’s asked to do anything besides run in a straight line.
The move was questioned at the time, because why the bleep would you pay £20m sterling for Stewart Downing? Reportedly, Fenway Sports Group’s John Henry and Tom Werner reportedly became infatuated with Downing after seeing an AVFC YouTube video of him kicking soccer balls into garbage cans from 30 yards away. After the signing The dynamic duo realized the video was doctored, presumably before they tried to buy David Beckham for $100m. Oops.
“There was some footage of Stewart where he was, from 30 yards away, kicking a football into five different trash cans and it was brilliant,” said chairman Werner.
“John and I said: ‘Oh my God, this player is brilliant, we’ve got to figure out a way to make a deal with him’.”
Red Sox fans should be scouring the Internet for viral videos of John Lackey pwning hitters.
[Update: Here's the whole interview from LiverpoolFC in August, which includes the rest of the quote the Birmingham Mail and other outlets did not: "We later found out of course that the footage was somewhat doctored but we were so excited about Downing joining Liverpool." Not sure what would be worse, believing the video was legit or still believing Stewart Downing was worth the money.]

Exhibit 1,458 why being rich does not equate to being smart.
January 27th, 2012 at 1:56 PM
It’s not just the 20M for Downing. It’s the 35M for Carroll. The 16M for Henderson. The 8M for Charlie Adam. LFC has spent over 100M pounds to build the least attractive 6th place team ever.

Brilliant, just brilliant there LOLerpool…

Nice work.
January 27th, 2012 at 2:07 PM
Sounds like something the Mets would do.
January 27th, 2012 at 2:07 PM
Just more proof that people involved with the Red Sox are slack jawed idiots who shouldn’t be allowed to breathe the same air as normal human beings. Fucking fuck ups.
January 27th, 2012 at 2:07 PM
Now I see why Theo wanted to get out of Boston so bad.
January 27th, 2012 at 2:08 PM
But hey, in all reality, just 6 points out of fourth in the league and there is a good amount of season left. And we’re still alive in two domestic cups!

This is like those trick shot beer pong videos
January 27th, 2012 at 2:12 PM
Only took 7 comments to bring it to the Red Sox… Centaur with the point.
/facepalm at John Henry

While an accomplishment, I always wonder how much stock we ought to put to cup successes. They’re knockout tourneys and you don’t face every other team.

I honestly don’t know the context of this in all caps.
January 27th, 2012 at 2:25 PM
These quotes are cherry picked from an interview that Werner and Ayre gave with the club back in August, and conveniently the media left out the quotes preceding it where Werner says it’s a funny story because he was looking for videos to show fans to get them excited about the signing, and then the quotes afterward where they were then told the video was fake.
Werner and Henry do not make the signings.
Ridiculously lazy journalism.
January 27th, 2012 at 2:26 PM
as a golfer, i could tell that video was fake. regardless of the differences in kicking and swinging, physics still apply…that first kick his path was square to the line and his foot was open, that’d be a fade, not a draw like the video showed.
January 27th, 2012 at 2:28 PM
3rd one’s fucked up too…2, 4, and 5 look ok.
January 27th, 2012 at 2:29 PM
I suppose we should not look at the full quote then.

@cowboy- I agree with you and I’m a MUFC fan in regards to the paper just picking out quotes to make them look stupid. English journalists do it all of the time.
January 27th, 2012 at 2:30 PM
High five, TFA.
January 27th, 2012 at 2:32 PM
I like how the article makes it seem that they just added another $2million to the price tag because of the video. There could be a ton of reasons why they upped their offer

Still waiting to find out what Gisele’s net carbon footprint is…this update will have to wait.

January 27th, 2012 at 2:37 PM
Still a shitty signing, regardless of the reasons for it.
January 27th, 2012 at 2:38 PM
So you’re telling me they didn’t make this guy try out first before giving him millions of dollars?
January 27th, 2012 at 2:49 PM
That’s not how transfers work if someone is under contract.
He was Villa’s player of the season last year and their best player, that’s why he was signed, not for some stupid fucking video.
January 27th, 2012 at 2:52 PM
So John Henry signed this guy after watching a 1:13 video? He’ll be broke quicker than you can say Antoine Walker.
January 27th, 2012 at 2:53 PM
And before anyone brings up Ashley Young’s transfer fee, he only had one year left on his deal and was not going to sign a new one with Villa so they had to take what they could get for him, plus United are paying him way more in wages than Downing is getting.
January 27th, 2012 at 2:55 PM
The Red Sox picked up Mark Melancon and Andrew Bailey the same way is what I’m hearing.
January 27th, 2012 at 2:58 PM
If only there was a faked YouTube video of Carson Palmer hitting moving targets with a football from 20 yards away. It would explain the Raiders’ trade with the Bengals.
January 27th, 2012 at 3:02 PM
Ridiculously lazy journalism.
Duffy hates him some Liverpool. So this comes naturally to him.
January 27th, 2012 at 3:04 PM
Well I didn’t mean Duffy, this story has run in several places and the initial one (I think in the Telegraph) was clearly done to try and embarrass the owners (who, again, do NOT make the signings) and then others ran with it. I don’t expect Duffy to track down a six month old interview.
Thanks for the update up there, chief.

False. I don’t rate Stevie G as highly as others. That’s more of an opinion than a bias.

Fair enough.
January 27th, 2012 at 3:11 PM
Duffy do you think that Wilshere going down the Harry Kewell Path To Excellence will force Arsene to make a signing this week?
Or that more likely he’ll just continue to bitch about the fact that big bad Ade is fucking up the race for fourth while Yossi sucks ass so therefore loans should be banned.
January 27th, 2012 at 3:17 PM
I’m going to go with continue to blame others and continue to ignore the fact that Arsenal’s injury patterns suggest a systemic issue rather than just absolutely horrible luck every year.
January 27th, 2012 at 3:20 PM
Yeah I saw you say that about the systemic issue on twitter this morning. What exactly do you mean by that? Medical and training staff failures? Types of players? Curious as to what you think there.
Last year Liverpool brought in a whole new “sports science” team and while it hasn’t prevented some of the bigger injuries that aren’t preventable, they did get Torres back into physical shape … and have lots of fancy gadgets they make the players wear during training.
January 27th, 2012 at 3:41 PM
Speaking of transfers, this has been one of the most boring January windows in a long time. Not sure much will change either in the next couple of days.
January 27th, 2012 at 8:03 PM
Obviously the guy who started trading corn futures for his parents farm and ended up creating a trading system that made him a billionaire is a stupid idiot.
There is a 0% chance this story is true.
