NYT: Yale QB Who Chose Harvard Game Over Rhodes Interview Had Already Been Disqualified For Sexual Assault Accusation
The New York Times is reporting Yale quarterback Patrick Witt, who caused a stir by turning down a Rhodes scholarship interview to play in the Harvard game, did not turn down a Rhodes scholarship interview. The paper claims Rhodes Trust had shelved Witt’s candidacy already, after discovering another student had accused him of sexual assault.
In September, according to people with knowledge of the situation, a female student went to Yale’s Sexual Assault Harassment and Response and Education Center, claiming Witt had assaulted her in her dormitory room. The woman later made a complaint to the University-Wide Committee on Sexual Misconduct, created last July as part of Yale’s new approach.
According to the New York Times, the woman filed an informal complaint against Witt. He is not enrolled at Yale and has not graduated. Yale would not address the issue because of a confidentiality policy.

Harvard vs. Yale and sexual assault are really one in the same.

Yikes.
I gotta ask: how much weight does an informal complaint carry? If he is the one who did it, why not make the complaint formal?

OK, now that I actually read the article, I understand what an informal complaint is. My second question remains – if he assaulted the lady, why would she settle for an informal complaint. Maybe a formal complaint would carry more weight and be a deterrent for others who consider assaulting innocents.
Granted, I understand the long-standing concerns about victims’ potential pain and suffering in the midst of an assault investigation. Historically, many victims fear the scrutiny and grueling process after the assault. But, how else to prevent the next assault?

So vague. Was he booted? Did he drop out?

so no police? Carry on.

An informal complaint for a sexual assault doesn’t really seem cohesive to me.

OT: Charles Barkley and Shaq arguing on TNT. Entertaining stuff. “Does Patrick Ewing have more stuff than me on the block?”
Shaq getting mildly agitated at Chuck. Pretty good television.

“Are you insane? The guy looks like a date rapist! Is that my jacket?”
“Start the elevator.”
“Not until you tell me what the situation is with you and the Sperminator out there! How long has this been going on?”
“Since I mustered the good sense to send you packing. He’s a much more suitable companion than you any day.”
“Are you nuts? The guy’s pure testosterone! He’s a walking hard-on just looking for a hole!”

Is it Shaq’s schtick to make it all about himself and how great he was? Cause I’m sure NBA TV can give him 30 minutes to do that every Wednesday and we can get Chris Webber or Gary Payton back on TNT.

For a change, Shaq got animated. Showed some fire, and didn’t talk into his shirt.
Point was a follow-up from earlier in the week. Shaq said D Howard was the most dominant big man in the game today, but Bynum was the “best big man”, mostly from offensive proficiency.
Barkley and Kenny Smith start flipping some crap towards Shaq. Shaq got defensive, then started asking if Ewing, David Robinson, Tim Duncan, et al, had more skill down low. Shaq started challenging Barkley directly (“One word, yes or no!”). Barkley actually backed off a bit, trying to smooth things over.

I would love to see a fight on set

Anyhoo, this Yale story seems unsettling. This guy threw away a Yale education. Now that his name is out, he may be already guilty in the court of public opinion.
Other students may already have an idea of the complainant. Even if her name isn’t formally released, she may not be able to keep the anonymity she seeks.
Situation stinks, all the way around.

Exactly. “So I got sexually assaulted last night by the school’s most notable player but you guys can decide whether or not to follow up on it. Gotta go-I’ve got class right now.”

However, I can empathize with women who are truly caught in the conflict of whether or not to report. Bottom line– hope no lady was hurt whatsoever.

Exactly. Going by the article’s process description, I don’t get it.

Rex –
Maybe because she didn’t want her name splashed all over the web for being sexually assaulted by a frat boy football player?
January 26th, 2012 at 9:09 PM
That I get. What I don’t understand is what the Informal Complaint means and if there is any real due process. I guess we can infer that the university acted, based on his not being enrolled, and their use of student privacy to not speak to it. It’s the inferring that gets people in trouble that “I don’t get”.
the informal process. In that process, an individual or a few members of the committee are charged with resolving the issue, without a full investigation or a finding of guilt or innocence. The most significant outcome might be an agreement to move the accused to a different dorm.
