The Great Duke Basketball Attendance Crisis at Cameron Indoor Stadium
The Cameron Crazies don’t care about Duke home basketball games anymore, so sayeth the Duke Chronicle (and attendance figures):
Student attendance at men’s basketball games has fallen consistently over the last five years, even dropping after Duke won its fourth national championship in 2010. This season, approximately 650 undergraduates have attended each game, 150 fewer than during the 2008-09 season. As a result, Duke Athletics has begun to sell an increasing number of general admission tickets in the student section on a regular basis.
I’ll wait with bated breath for Dick Vitale to tear this article apart on his next visit to Durham.
“It’s the best atmosphere in America, baby!”
“These Duke fans are the real PTPers!”
“Krzyzewskiville was jumping the other night, baby, it was awesome!”
You mean students don’t pack Cameron Indoor for home games in December in January? I’m shocked the Duke faithful didn’t return to campus during Winter Break to watch Duke clobber Pennsylvania on New Year’s Day. Students should be ashamed they missed the 40-point romp over Western Michigan on Dec. 30th. Two of Duke’s most competitive games took place in Hawaii (Michigan, Kansas), another in Columbus (Ohio State) and another in NYC (Michigan State). The students are missing nothing, unless you count the underlying tension between Coach K and Austin Rivers. [Duke Chronicle]

But when 16 seeded Troy comes to town over winter break for round 1 of the cfb playoff I’m sure 100K people will show up.

38-35 in the 2nd half, clown.
January 24th, 2012 at 5:41 PM
35 is normally good enough to win in the B1G.

March Madness has killed the regular season. I’m a tOSU alum, live 5 minutes from the arena, can get tickets whenever, and could give a shit until February. It should be noted that every year year I find myself less into sports than the previous.

will there be more or less attendance/ratings posts under the new regime?
January 24th, 2012 at 6:08 PM
Screw the talk of lack of attendance for meaningless games, I would much rather know about the that little quote.
January 24th, 2012 at 6:17 PM
Fuck Duke.
/ new regime might not like the use of fuck in a sentence.
January 24th, 2012 at 6:22 PM
I didn’t really read much of the comments in that new regime post. So are were under close supervision now? Shenanigans!
January 24th, 2012 at 6:29 PM
Neither did I but now that it’s USA Today one would think more moderation.
/ I swear to God I’m going to pistol whip the next person who says Shenanigans.

@kazzythekid
Wash U in St. Louis students make Duke students look like models. As a alum of Wash U, I know this to be a fact.

I was just about to congratulate him on getting it right.
January 24th, 2012 at 9:19 PM
Maybe there just aren’t any quality floppers anymore for the students to come see in Durham.
January 24th, 2012 at 9:46 PM
Meanwhile, the badminton and cricket teams have surging attendance.

This would never happen if Bobby Hurley and Christian Laettner still owned the rock.
