Terrell Owens is Broke, After Playing 15 Years and Making $80 Million
Last week, Terrell Owens signed on with the Allen Wranglers, who are apparently in something called the Indoor Football League. If you were looking for a reason why a player who is a likely Hall of Famer, played 15 seasons in the NFL, and made at least $80 million in the NFL is signing with a team that is about 45 miles from Jerry World but still a million miles away, well, it’s money. Sadly, if this profile in the latest issue of GQ is believed, Terrell Owens has very little left.
A combination of bad investments, large child support payments, and trusting the wrong people have left Terrell Owens with very little to show for his time as a star player.
The problem, he says, is that he’s by nature too trusting, loyal to a fault, despite everyone’s carping that he’s selfish. It’s the sad old stereotypical song of the up-from-nothing black athlete: He let other people take care of things. He says his financial advisers (informally recommended by Rosenhaus) put him in a series of risky, highly leveraged ventures that he didn’t discover until autumn 2010, when he finally demanded a full accounting. And of course there were the houses and condos, which he had always figured he could rent out; they became dead weight when the real estate market collapsed in 2008. Individually they weren’t terribly lavish, but together the mortgage nut is reportedly almost $750,000 a year. The Atlanta house is on the market; the south Jersey place he paid $3.9 million for was sold for $1.7 million in late 2010. Most egregious of all was the ill-fated Alabama entertainment complex (with an electronic-bingo component) that cost him $2 million. He invested, he says, at the suggestion of his advisers and a lawyer they steered him to, Pamela Linden. The venture turned out to be illegal in the state, not to mention a violation of the NFL’s policy prohibiting players from investing in gambling. Owens is suing Linden, as is Clinton Portis, the former Redskins running back who also invested. (Several other players and the boxer Floyd Mayweather Jr. also got sucked into the venture.)
Not exactly a ringing endorsement of Drew Rosenhaus. Then there’s this little exchange:
When Drew [Rosenhaus] heard about what had happened with my money, he said, ‘Oh man, is there anything I can do?’ ” says Owens, pushing back from the table with disgust. “And I said, ‘Dude, are you going to give me my money back? I don’t think so, so why bother trying to appease me?’ ” (“In my opinion,” says Rosenhaus, “the conversation did not go down that way.”)
Terrell Owens has four children with four different women, with child support totaling $44,600 – each month – and he needs to come up with money at the same time he tries to lower the support amount because he is no longer working.
Owens had no father figure growing up (he found out who his father was when he got a crush on the girl across the street and was told it was his half-sister). He could have used one at some point. Despite the outward success of being one of the best receivers in NFL history, he has little to show for it, just a year after what might have been his last season. He’s holding on to hope for another chance to play, another call from a team willing to give him a chance to play once again. I just pray he holds on to hope once he realizes those locker room doors may be shut for good.

Last week, Terrell Owens signed on with the Allen Wranglers, who are apparently in something called the Indoor Football League.
I still don’t understand how that is going to get him financially solvent.
January 24th, 2012 at 2:21 PM
) put him in a series of risky, highly leveraged ventures
He should have invested in FSV.
January 24th, 2012 at 2:24 PM
i just don’t understand this…why do they deserve $120k PER YEAR? you can’t raise a child on anything less than that? CMON.
January 24th, 2012 at 2:24 PM
Least surprising news this week? Least surprising news this week.
January 24th, 2012 at 2:25 PM
i just don’t understand this…why do they deserve $120k PER YEAR? you can’t raise a child on anything less than that? CMON.
Family Law is fucked up. That’s why.
January 24th, 2012 at 2:25 PM
Probably not entirely solvent, but I heard he signed for like $500k, which is no insignificant amount.
January 24th, 2012 at 2:25 PM
So Drew Rosenhaus and his cronies bled him dry and now have hung him out? Yeah, I’m sure that fact is going to get trumpeted.
And for all athletes, save some sperm and then get your tubes snipped. Nothing will ruin your finances like having multiple baby mamas.
January 24th, 2012 at 2:26 PM

If true, time for the beat-down.
Terrell Owens has four children with four different women, with child support totaling $44,600 – each month – and he needs to come up with money at the same time he tries to lower the support amount because he is no longer working.
Astonishing.

that’s damn good advice…they should start symposiums on this in high school.
January 24th, 2012 at 2:27 PM
no shit…im so pissed off kobe’s wife and elin nordegren got that much money for being crotchwallets. it boggles the mind.
im not saying they don’t deserve shit but $120k?!?!?!?! HUNDREDS OF MILLIONS OF DOLLARS?!??!!?!??!
January 24th, 2012 at 2:27 PM
Heard he just blew $60K on JoePa death services, too.
January 24th, 2012 at 2:28 PM
With the price of liquor in the USA how could anyone ever be destitute?
/Need to start my paternity insurance business
January 24th, 2012 at 2:28 PM
Probably not entirely solvent, but I heard he signed for like $500k, which is no insignificant amount. St. Bear
I had no clue. Does he still get paid when the league goes belly-up after four games?
January 24th, 2012 at 2:29 PM
Seems to be too easy for the custodial mother to get support ratcheted up like mad when the father makes more scratch, but impossible to go the other way.
I think most dads would pay more than their share if the mothers weren’t such cunts about the whole thing. Honor system, etc.
January 24th, 2012 at 2:29 PM
How much did Artie Lange’s Pick’em gig pay? Might be worth a call to TO.
January 24th, 2012 at 2:32 PM
BTW, fantastic job picking the image of TO where he looks homeless.
or is it hipster
or maybe ready to tape a stunt for Jackass
January 24th, 2012 at 2:32 PM
I read these stories and want to scream. How do you blow that much money that quickly? How fucking stupid can you be?
January 24th, 2012 at 2:32 PM
Even if a particular athlete in college doesn’t want a degree, why doesn’t the athletic department sponsor a seminar on “watch your money” for its’ players?
You could do this each semester, doesn’t have to be a credit course, but it needs to be more than horror stories like Owens’.
To the former college athletes here, would this have been worthwhile for you? Was it already offered, but answered with apathy?
January 24th, 2012 at 2:33 PM
what an asshole.
January 24th, 2012 at 2:33 PM
I’m not sure if I feel bad for him or not.
January 24th, 2012 at 2:33 PM
Ah, that’s a shame.
January 24th, 2012 at 2:34 PM
This isn’t sad. It’s stupid.
“Fuck anything you want. You’ll have money to pay off the spawn (they aren’t your kids, since you want nothing to do with them)” – Dumb
Fur coats and Bentley’s and a mansion that will allow 45 people to freeload off of you. – Dumber
Trusting anyone with your money – Dumbest.
How to solve it?
1. Wrap it or don’t fuck it. Kids are not a happenstance from 45 seconds of fun. And they will kill your bank account.
2. Have a blast with a small percentage of your cash. A Porsche? Yes! A Bentley? Maybe. 10 luxury cars? Hell no. A sweet condo with pool for the bitches? Hell fucking yes. A 32,000 sq foot mansion for 40? Leave it to Elvis.
3. You don’t have to be smart to be smart with your money. It’s yours. Ask questions. Start with, “I want to live like this until I’m 90, so make it happen”. Invest with a small percentage of your earnings, not the whole damn thing. And, don’t EVER trust your friends with your cash, EVER.
January 24th, 2012 at 2:36 PM
Maybe the Hall of Fame will push up his eligibility to help him out.
/lolololol
January 24th, 2012 at 2:36 PM
Even he couldn’t afford it, and was close to broke when he died. His daughter made far more after his death than Elvis did while alive.
January 24th, 2012 at 2:36 PM
This… The problem is that the population that need it is few and far between. However, it absolutely should be a mandated course for rookies, especially NBA and NFL rookies. And, the mandate should come from the players’ union, themselves. If the union was truly looking out for its members, this would be a gimme.
January 24th, 2012 at 2:37 PM
Sweet. Maybe now he actually will go through with it and kill himself. After all he no longer has “25 Million Reasons” not to.
January 24th, 2012 at 2:37 PM
I just don’t want Chad Ochocinco to end up this way. He gives out so many free meals and money to his twitter followers, and I want to be a recipient.
January 24th, 2012 at 2:37 PM
Awesome caption.
The 120k in child support is seriously messed up, everything else he can go (and financially should) fuck himself.
January 24th, 2012 at 2:38 PM
I don’t feel an ounce of sadness. He made $80 million. Take 35% of that away for taxes, and 4% away for his agent fees. That means he blew $48 million in 15 years. Holy.Fucking.Shit.
January 24th, 2012 at 2:38 PM
And, don’t EVER trust your friends with your cash, EVER.
This would lower the murder rate in the US, for sure.
January 24th, 2012 at 2:38 PM
all these divorce, child support judges are feminist vampires. they inflated the child support payments because he was making a lot of money, but now that he’s broke they can’t reduce it to a fair amount? his baby mommas are gonna be living like high powered lawyers just because they got the right prick stuck in them one time while they were drunk whoring it up at a club.
January 24th, 2012 at 2:38 PM
One thing I learned from an Orenthal James Simpson & Co. asset protection seminar is that his creditors can’t go after his nice NFL retirement pay.
January 24th, 2012 at 2:38 PM
Sooo, he invested in a casino in Alabama, WHEN GAMBLING ISN’T EVEN LEGAL IN THE STATE?!?!? Who the hell advises this? And before signing off on a check for $2 Million, shouldn’t he google “Alabama Casinos”, just to get an idea of what he is up against, or if they exist at all????
Also, if anyone can get Terrel on the phone, I have some ocean front property in Arizona I would like to make him a deal on.
January 24th, 2012 at 2:39 PM

January 24th, 2012 at 2:39 PM
Should I talk about the Giants lowballing Lincecum here or in the USA Today post?
January 24th, 2012 at 2:40 PM
It’s all Drew Rosenhaus’ fault. Oh, and that T.O. didn’t have a father figure growing up.
January 24th, 2012 at 2:41 PM
He could have taken 1/2 of his money, put that shit in a Swiss bank account and blown $24 million and he would still have $24 million earning him some nice interest. Fuck this guy in the face for being so god damn stupid.
January 24th, 2012 at 2:41 PM
Wally, you got the answers, but so many young athletes don’t want to hear the truth. By the time Owens and his ilk are ready to listen, there is nothing to work with. No way in hell will he ever catch up on the child support.
And, he has burned bridges with his foolish “diva” act. Who wants to work with him to the level where he can make the cash quickly to dig himself out?
Stupid, stupid.
January 24th, 2012 at 2:41 PM
I realize this might not be the right sentiment for this, but I can’t help but feel sorry for these types of stories.
January 24th, 2012 at 2:41 PM
How about the fact that I have to root for Cody Fucking Ross now?
January 24th, 2012 at 2:42 PM
he’s an idiot sure but his bastard children don’t deserve 120K each when he’s not even making peanuts anymore. the child support payments were inflated because he was making a lot of money but now he doesn’t have any. the feminist vampire judges should reduce the payments to a fair amount.
January 24th, 2012 at 2:42 PM
I don’t doubt that he may have been screwed over at times, but if you don’t ask for the utmost transparency with your money, you’re asking to play for the Allen Wranglers when you’re 38 and broke.
January 24th, 2012 at 2:43 PM
JD Drew retired so there’s a feather in your cap. Besides, Ross can be a good 4th OF.
January 24th, 2012 at 2:43 PM
Karma can sometimes be a bitch when you act like a fucking asshole for 17 years.
January 24th, 2012 at 2:43 PM
whoa…awkward
January 24th, 2012 at 2:44 PM
This right here. Someone could have given him another 1 year deal if he wasn’t such an asshole to everyone. He could have also been given a studio job this past season. Him getting cut in Dallas was the beginning of the end.
January 24th, 2012 at 2:44 PM
So true. The mistakes aren’t just athlete mistakes. They are celebrity mistakes. And they continually repeat themselves.
The top 20 earners over the last 15 years in baseball, football, basketball could literally be in Gates/Buffett rarified air with the right attention paid to it. They literally could help change the world with the cash that’s being earned. They didn’t pay to find the top level money managers in the world, which is what they needed for the cash being brought in.
Instead, players waste it all on penny-ante schemes, absurd properties and possessions, and thousands of other ridiculous wastes.
Agents should be drawn and quartered for allowing their clients to end up like this too. It’s every bit as much their job. The problem is that the agents, in most cases, are as trustworthy as your most notorious used car salesman with the plaid polyester and bad hairpiece.
January 24th, 2012 at 2:45 PM
Terrell Owens has four children with four different women, with child support totaling $44,600 – each month
This is why you don’t have a kid until your absolutely, positively sure your with the right women.
January 24th, 2012 at 2:46 PM
Something I never understood is why agents aren’t hooking all of their clients up with senior FAs at MSSB, Merrill Lynch, JPMorgan, UBS or Credit Suisse.
January 24th, 2012 at 2:47 PM
He’s always seemed like a dinkwad though. Guess he’ll be my dinkwad now. Like Youkilis.
January 24th, 2012 at 2:48 PM
Is there any legal action TO can take against his agent?
January 24th, 2012 at 2:48 PM
Something I never understood is why agents aren’t hooking all of their clients up with senior FAs at MSSB, Merrill Lynch, JPMorgan, UBS or Credit Suisse.
5% kickback?
January 24th, 2012 at 2:49 PM
To be fair to Owens, condoms are the worst.
January 24th, 2012 at 2:50 PM
Owens is obviously culpable here. No doubt.
But, don’t most agent have relationships with reputable financial advisers that they plug athletes into? You know….to sort of help save TO from himself, financially speaking?
Or maybe I’m naive.
January 24th, 2012 at 2:50 PM
who says they’re not?
January 24th, 2012 at 2:50 PM
Because clients who are set for life tend to take hometown discounts, something the agents and Players Associations hate. They may also retire earlier. As long as their checks cash, they could care less.
January 24th, 2012 at 2:50 PM
Nevermind the big names, they need to find something with a Series 6, 65, or 66 license.
January 24th, 2012 at 2:51 PM
Sometimes you just can’t pass up a Bingo-themed funhouse in Alabama.
January 24th, 2012 at 2:51 PM
I’m sure several of them are, my best friend who used to work at Merrill on client disbursements regularly talked with athletes.
January 24th, 2012 at 2:52 PM
Can I get a definition on dinkwad?
January 24th, 2012 at 2:53 PM
Hire me as your agent and I will give you an experimental birth control shot which will be the single greatest yearly investment of your life. Your 38 year old self weep with joy at your foresight.
January 24th, 2012 at 2:53 PM
In Alabama, there have always been “bingo” games in union halls and places like that. These machines are similar to slot machines but they dispense tickets which can then be exchanged for, among other things, cash. There was not a clear interpretation on record as to whether these were a form of gambling or if they were just a game. They have always been so small scale that the authorities didn’t waste their time shutting them down to get a clear court ruling. A few years ago, a series of “bingo” parlours opened up in south Alabama which housed hundreds of these machines. Seemed like easy money and I am sure that is why people like Owens invested. Churches and the Porch Band of Creek Indians ran up and down the State Attorney General to go after these bingo parlours since they closely resembled casinos. This provoked law enforcement to shut them down and the owners to challenge these actions in state court. State Court ruled that, since these machines cost money to operate and the results were not based ENTIRELY on the skill of the operator, they were “gambling” apparatus and therefore illegal in the state of Alabama. Upside-down smiley face for the investors (including Owens).
January 24th, 2012 at 2:53 PM
This. Probably has something to do with the kickbacks that some of the unscrupulous agents likely take on the back end from their “trusted” advisors. Other agencies offer “full service”, which includes wealth management. That’s where it could get tough for an athlete, when his entire agency is pushing him in that direction.
It doesn’t take much to ask. “I see these commercials about UBS and JP Morgan on my TV all of the time. Hey, Agent. I want an appointment to talk to one of them… tomorrow.”
But, hell yes. My inevitable lottery win will be followed with a call to my local JP Morgan Wealth Management office within 24 hours. I will follow their lead for the next 50 years of happiness.
January 24th, 2012 at 2:53 PM
dammit. another long one.

To be fair to Owens, condoms are the worst.
True story. Also, bitches be lyin’ bout their pill takin’. Apparently.
January 24th, 2012 at 2:55 PM
the other issue is those advisors being approved in the states their clients might end up moving to. there are a few issues, but im sure that they’re paying SOMEONE to look over their finances…whether or not they’re listening is an entirely different story.
January 24th, 2012 at 2:55 PM

January 24th, 2012 at 2:55 PM

these guys (I mean the ones who go broke, not necessarily the black ones) spend their salaries like the money is never going to stop pouring in at the rate it’s coming in.
Why is Dez Bryant getting bottle service in Miami two weekends ago? Because he’s on the road to broke, and the fastest way to do that is to fly a long distance to drink expensive booze at a fancy nightclub.
As I understand it, part of TO’s salary in this shitty league goes toward an ownership stake in the team.

He left the Republican party because they’ve become wacko, and now they shun him for that.
I’m either going to vote for him or Colbert in Nov. A Republican vote in NJ is a wasted vote, so at least I get to vote for someone whose ideas I actually believe in.
January 24th, 2012 at 3:21 PM
that’s a pretty good mindset…especially from my viewpoint in a swing state who’s haranguing over whom to choose.
ive only gotten through two of his “issues” pages and the article on gingrich’s drug enforcement, but he seems pretty sensible. good lookin out…gives me something to read for an hour when i get home.
of course, given the choice, id vote for colbert in a heartbeat.
January 24th, 2012 at 3:25 PM
He’s an interesting twitter follow as well. You get some boring propaganda, but he’ll also do things like live tweet during the debates with his answers and responses to the other candidates.
January 24th, 2012 at 3:25 PM
Gary Johnson is so right on the drug war, but the Republican party views the drug war as the utmost of importance for some reason.
January 24th, 2012 at 3:27 PM
You’d think the Republicans would understand a bad investment as they so love the businessman, but they keep wanting to put money into a lost cause. In fairness to the Reps, though, the Democrats are almost just as bad. No one wants to be seen as soft on crime. Stupid on crime is fine, but not soft.

Interseting to note how fast Owens friend and agent Drew Rosenhaus dropped him when his playing days were over. 50 to 55% of ex-NFL players are bankrupt five years after they have stopped playing. It has to suck going to work at Wal-Mart after being in the NFL for 15 years. Hate to say this, but I don’t think T.O. will survive this.

This is why the right thing for financial advisors to sell pro athletes and entertainers — anybody who’s very wealthy at a young age who’s likely NOT to have support networks in place — is an annuity.
Yes, they’ll pay a huge commission, but 10, 20, 30, even 50 years later, their money will still be there. And the commission will be a lot less than their agent’s 10%.
Boy, is it a tough sell to get a guy under 30, still single, to sock millions away in an insurance contract. It’s nowhere near as much fun as investing in a restaurant or nightclub. It’s not high tech. It’s not exciting. It’s just the right thing to do.

I used to be an Registered NFL Players Association Financial Adviser and had good intentions; however this article is indicative of what happens to many players. The league never went after any of the agents for recommending disreputable advisers, they were supposed to only recommend Registered advisers and many did not. So I dropped the designation. I’ve spoken with the NFL and they just don’t care about the long term financial health of these players. It really sucks because there are good advisers out there, but, are guys like Rosenhouse (who I have spoken with ) going to recommend guys that aren’t lining their pockets? No way, its a world of conflicts of interest and they know it. Guys like Owens pay the price.

I do feel bad that anyone has come to the point in their life where Terrell now finds himself. Many would argue that he came from a challenging financial background, and that, couple with the vulnerability of sports professionals in this situation, he was manipulated. To this, I do agree up to a point. Then, I look at so many athletes, celebrities, etc who have come from diadvantaged backgrounds but did not allow themselves to return to that type of mindset. Terrell’s story, while tragic, cannot be dismissed as “another product of an unfair system or society”. Rather, with too many choices he made without thinking, he should be held accountable for what he has become. The pure talent he had (and still may have) will be forever overshadowed by attitude and altitude (he often had a poor attitude and always had his head in the clouds, which can be dangerous).
When it comes to the issue of child-support, that is an item that I would not win if making logical points regarding dollar values so I will not cross that line. However, regardless of “bad financial advice or investments”, Mr. Owens has to face the fact that he has fathered four children by four different women. I read uneducated comments from others using phrases such as “*itches be lyin ’bout pill takin”, and it makes me sad. The women made bad decisions because they had unprotected sex with someone they were not in a committed relationships with (it’s called marriage, for those who do not know this word!). Yet, Terrell is not only procreating without regard for the future of these offspring, it is like playing Russian roulette with your own health. For all those who think it is “manly” to impregnate as many women as possible, remember,it is the not even close to what being a man is all about!

FTR: $44,600/mth = $535,200/year.
As a female it angers me when these “Bs” and “Cs” get these outrageous sums of money from divorce/child support settlements for DOING NOTHING more than spreading their legs and squeezing out children. NOT doctors, lawyers, archeologist, anthropologists, corporate wives. NOTHING!
Not excusing the bad behavior of the athletes. $75 million and 3 estates is ridiculous, pre-nup or not. She married a man who was too young and surrounded by too many temptations to be ready to make a commitment of fidelity. SHEs as well as HEs should be held RESPONSIBLE for knowing that. The courts need to start holding these GOLD-DIGGING “Cs” RESPONSIBLE for the cruel games innocent children are subjected to while men are painted as the villains.
