Prince Fielder to the Detroit Tigers: 9 Years, $214 Million
Prince Fielder is going to the Detroit Tigers. Tim Brown of Yahoo Sports reported the two were close to reaching a mammoth 9-year deal, and Jon Heyman of CBS just said it’s a done deal. The Rangers were supposedly in the mix, and so were the Nationals (ha), and there had been plenty of chatter that Fielder could be inking a short-term deal in hopes of getting bigger money down the road. The Tigers snagging the slugger instantly puts them back in the mix with the Yankees, Red Sox, Rangers and Angels in the American League.
Tigers’ fans: How does a 3-4-5 of Cabrera, Fielder and Jhonny Peralta strike you? It’d be much more fearsome with V-Mart hitting 5th, but he’s done for the year.

Guess him and his dad can make up at the casinos
January 24th, 2012 at 3:07 PM
They are going to FEAST on AL Central pitching 72 times this year.
January 24th, 2012 at 3:07 PM
$23.7 million a year for damn near a decade? Wow. Props to his agent.
January 24th, 2012 at 3:09 PM
not to change the subject, but interesting read on the senior bowl practices.
January 24th, 2012 at 3:09 PM
I recall saying this it was DET or WAS back in October and getting severely, severely beaten on.
/no way, DET is slashing payroll
January 24th, 2012 at 3:09 PM
Boras just works that magic. Unreal.

Not surprisingly, youre missing a 90+ win team
January 24th, 2012 at 3:11 PM
The Rangers were supposedly in the mix, and so were the Nationals (ha)
Et tu, Jason?
January 24th, 2012 at 3:12 PM
I’d be interested to hear what the losing bids were (i.e. if Detroit bid against themselves)
January 24th, 2012 at 3:12 PM
$23.7 million a year for damn near a decade? Wow. Props to his agent.
Yeah, but who will he trust when he wants to invest in Alabama casinos?
January 24th, 2012 at 3:13 PM
That’ll buy a lot of vegetables that he’ll eventually throw away in favor of donuts in 2 years.
January 24th, 2012 at 3:13 PM
I just hope Prince gets sound financial advice.
January 24th, 2012 at 3:13 PM
man..The DisAstros are going to be terrible for a long time. Sigh
In other news…
They are hiring a firm to see if they want to change the name of the team. I say go back to the Colt .45s
January 24th, 2012 at 3:13 PM
Tigers need to win a World Series by 2016.
January 24th, 2012 at 3:14 PM
dana white approves.
January 24th, 2012 at 3:14 PM
It’s Boras…he will claim there were other bids that were higher, but his client really wanted to play in Detroit.
January 24th, 2012 at 3:14 PM
As long as he doesn’t receive financial advice from his Dad, he’ll be fine.
January 24th, 2012 at 3:15 PM
How is Miguel Cabrera going to be expected to play 3B?
January 24th, 2012 at 3:15 PM
He wont produce after 4, what a steal
January 24th, 2012 at 3:16 PM
I’d hit Jhonny 2, Fielder 3, MCab 4. Get those bats up in the order.
January 24th, 2012 at 3:16 PM
Agree 100%. Crane seems like he’s probably enough of an anti-PC type to do this, too.
January 24th, 2012 at 3:17 PM
DH/1B platoon?
January 24th, 2012 at 3:17 PM
Platoon 1B/DH between Prince and Miggy. Has to be. I think it’s V-Mart’s status that is in more question.
January 24th, 2012 at 3:17 PM

January 24th, 2012 at 3:18 PM
Meanwhile in Milwaukee, Fielder is gone and Braun is facing the 50-games suspension. O/U on Brewers fans trying to commit suicide via bratwurst is what? 50? 60?
January 24th, 2012 at 3:18 PM
V-Mart will be traded next offseason.
January 24th, 2012 at 3:18 PM
It’d be much more fearsome with V-Mart hitting 5th, but he’s done for the year
No it wouldn’t. You only get one DH spot, this isn’t a softball team
January 24th, 2012 at 3:18 PM
A shame the Brewers won’t face the Tigers next year as its the year both Centrals are scheduled to play.
Happy for Prince and to watch the Detroit Tigers just maul the AL Central.
January 24th, 2012 at 3:19 PM
only slightly buzzed.
January 24th, 2012 at 3:19 PM
I was just hoping we’d get Damon with V-Mart out… Are you kidding me, Righty – Miggy, Lefty – Big Cec’s kid!!! Mike Illitch, thanks for letting Dombrowski spend your money, we may end up with 2 overweight, underperforming sluggers in a giant ballpark in 4 years, but damn it’ll be a hell of a ride…
January 24th, 2012 at 3:19 PM
Avila will probably hit 5th. He’s a damn good hitter, too. If they can figure out how to teach Austin Jackson any sort of plate discipline, they have a fearsome lineup. Just need a leadoff hitter now.
January 24th, 2012 at 3:20 PM
I agree that’s probably what happened. Probably used Nationals/Rangers as leverage to get those extra years/millions.
January 24th, 2012 at 3:20 PM
Platoon 1B/DH between Prince and Miggy. Has to be. I think it’s V-Mart’s status that is in more question.
All that money to platoon? why? Cant they just move Miggy?
January 24th, 2012 at 3:20 PM

They’ll be fine. NL Central isn’t very good. It’s St. Louis without Pujols and not much else. I’d be shocked if they weren’t at least in the Wild Card hunt.
January 24th, 2012 at 3:21 PM
All about the pitching. Brewers are going to be fine.
/I’d like to think…
January 24th, 2012 at 3:21 PM
Fryman, Fielder, Tettleton and Deer. That was a fearsome foursome. and a lot of K’s.
January 24th, 2012 at 3:21 PM
Avila 5th
January 24th, 2012 at 3:21 PM
Avila will probably hit 5th. He’s a damn good hitter, too. If they can figure out how to teach Austin Jackson any sort of plate discipline, they have a fearsome lineup. Just need a leadoff hitter now.
They’ve been talking about Juan Pierre on Mlive being a potential target.
January 24th, 2012 at 3:21 PM
The Brewers only competition in the Central this year is St. Louis. They’ll be in the playoff hunt all year long. They still have Yovani, Marcum and Grienke. They’ll tread water until Valtrex gets back.
January 24th, 2012 at 3:22 PM
I am so fucking glad Texas didn’t overpay for that walking cardiac arrest.
I mean, what’ that tub o’ lard going to be doing in 2016 to earn all that scratch?
January 24th, 2012 at 3:22 PM
Not anymore.
January 24th, 2012 at 3:22 PM
Meanwhile, the legend of Theo grows… No more Pujols and Prince in the Central, TLR retires, the Astros get a major front office hire and are moving to the AL.
EVERYTHING COMING UP CUBBIES! WOO!
January 24th, 2012 at 3:23 PM
Id say they have a better shot at the Central than the Wildcard this year.
January 24th, 2012 at 3:23 PM
There are rumblings now that Braun might be exonerated, possibly just has to promise to keep it wrapped up on long road trips going forward
January 24th, 2012 at 3:23 PM
St. Louis still has Berkman, Holliday, Beltran, Freese and they get Wainwright back. Oh, and they have the 2nd best pitching prospect in baseball that should be up by August. They’re still really good.
Brewers are going to need offense unless Braun’s suspension is overturned
January 24th, 2012 at 3:23 PM
Except the Reds are better than both teams.
January 24th, 2012 at 3:23 PM
They’ll be fine. NL Central isn’t very good. It’s St. Louis without Pujols and not much else. I’d be shocked if they weren’t at least in the Wild Card hunt.
So you’re saying it’s the Cubs’ year?
/lights SC’s signal
January 24th, 2012 at 3:25 PM
Yeah this too…Reds are really solid with the Latos addition. NL Central among the top three teams will be really good.
January 24th, 2012 at 3:25 PM
Forgot about them but only partially agree. Definitely a competitor, but I’ll take St. Louis’ pitching over yours. Let’s see how Latos does after a down year and in a smaller park.
January 24th, 2012 at 3:25 PM
I’m interested to see if Prince shows up to camp reasonably in shape, or will he look like a guy sitting near his phone all off-season.
No, I’m not bitter that my Nats got used as leverage. Not at all.

January 24th, 2012 at 3:28 PM

January 24th, 2012 at 3:29 PM
Other than Bill James’ “Plexiglass Principle” I don’t see much reason why the Astros will be any better than the hideous 2010 version.
January 24th, 2012 at 3:30 PM
I AM SHOCKED, APPALLED AND DEVASTATED. DAMN YOU MIKE ILLITCH AND DAMN YOU NHL SALARY CAP. DAMN YOU TO HELL!!!!
January 24th, 2012 at 3:30 PM

I guess I understand the “fat jokes” with Prince… but there was no guy on the team that put in more work and was more durable than that guy. He missed probably less than 10 games the last 4 years combined. He never gained wait… dude is mostly muscle… he’s just oddly shaped.
January 24th, 2012 at 3:30 PM
SC, the Nats still have some hope. After all, Adam LaRoche will be healthy soon.
/sarcasm light – off
Leverage is a part of free agency in all sports. C’est la vie.
January 24th, 2012 at 3:30 PM
Seeing as how they are trying to spend less than $60MM this year and next, I’d say the Cubs should be better. The Astros are doing what the Rockets should be doing: tanking.
January 24th, 2012 at 3:30 PM
If you look at his numbers from July on, they were really really good. He’s also a strikeout pitcher which will help a lot.
January 24th, 2012 at 3:30 PM
I’m personally hoping that if the Red Sox can’t win it, the Yankees beat the Cubs in the World Series. I think I’d be okay with another Yankees title, just to see the look on SC’s twitter.
January 24th, 2012 at 3:30 PM
Detroit gets 2-3 years out of him, unloads him when one of the other money team gets desperate, eats a small part of his salary in the process. Might just work…..
January 24th, 2012 at 3:31 PM
Your farm system is still in the top half of all of baseball, SROD. Even after gutting a lot of it on Gio Gonzalez.

January 24th, 2012 at 3:32 PM
I’d be crestfallen. No second thoughts about it. It would be extremely disappointing.
January 24th, 2012 at 3:32 PM
ATL, there have been other cases where a guy becomes a free agent, and is left up to his own devices regarding fitness until he signs with a team. Concerns stem from not having a team-devised off-season regimen.
Yeah, he is strong as an ox. I’ll give you “oddly-shaped”, but in nine years what can we reasonably expect from someone with his physique?
January 24th, 2012 at 3:32 PM
Are there any player options in this thing?
January 24th, 2012 at 3:32 PM
pretty sure this goes without saying.

January 24th, 2012 at 3:34 PM
The fuck? You think if he isn’t performing, they are going to unload $150 million contract by eating $10? Not a chance. No one is taking on 6 years of Prince.
That’d be like SRORD telling us that he think the Nats can unload Jayson Werth if they toss in a few sawbucks. Good luck.
January 24th, 2012 at 3:34 PM
Concerns stem from not having a team-devised off-season regimen.
He never had one when he was in Milwaukee. He did his own thing down in Orlando during the off season with Rickie Weeks.
January 24th, 2012 at 3:34 PM
HOLY SHIT! BITCHES!!!!!!!!!!!
Congratulations on your Carlos Lee Starter Kit.
January 24th, 2012 at 3:35 PM
SC, I touched back on similar points you made in an earlier Roundup, IIRC.
Overall, snark-free, the Nats really have hope. Morse is athletic enough to play LF. CF with consistent OPS is a need. Harper may be productive in ’13. I really like Gonzalez as a #3 starter.
I am really looking forward to following them this summer. Can’t wait for MLB Extra Innings – it’s my version of soap opera.
January 24th, 2012 at 3:35 PM
I hate Larry Dolan.

That’d be like SRORD telling us that he think the Nats can unload Jayson Werth if they toss in a few sawbucks. Good luck.
Hey, now. I believe in dreams, but I’m afraid my team is stuck with that guy. That contract looks worse with every passing month.
Werth can’t even figure out his facial hair for the season, let alone be a cornerstone for a franchise that needs one.
January 24th, 2012 at 3:37 PM
Would not surprise me to see VMart traded after this season, eventually have to sign Scherzer to extension. Plus their farm system is pretty barren outside of Turner/Castellnos
January 24th, 2012 at 3:38 PM
The fuck? You think if he isn’t performing, they are going to unload $150 million contract by eating $10? Not a chance. No one is taking on 6 years of Prince…
No. I am saying he performs highly for 3 years then they can unload him before his value goes down and they dont have to eat his salary. Get the front end value and then accept some of his back-salary for the price of renting him early on. Sorry if that wasn’t clearer. I think he’ll perform fine for a while.
January 24th, 2012 at 3:38 PM
Life’s all about managing expectations, but dammit, this is just sad.
Crane and Luhnow are both preparing fans by saying that it’s going to be a rough couple of years. They reminded everyone of this yesterday by announcing lower ticket prices for 5,000 seats and lower beer prices. If that’s not a “Hey we suck, but come to our games anyway” play, then I don’t know what is.
I’ll say that by 2015, we’ll be in pretty decent shape.
January 24th, 2012 at 3:38 PM
smoke tweeds?
January 24th, 2012 at 3:38 PM
Ah! Another customer!
Let me tell you, SROD… go with MLB.tv. I advised CJ to get it last year and a couple others. They were pretty pleased with the results. You can watch any game and pick which broadcast it comes in. All in HD. If you want it on your TV, all you need is either and HDMI output from your computer, an Apple TV or a gaming console*. All streaming. Plus, if you’ve got a smartphone, the at-bat app will allow you to get all of it on the go. Radio or TV broadcast.
The only issue you’ll have is with Rockies games but I’m sure you get those on TV already. Blackout rules and all for home market teams.
* – I realize since you’re of the older generation you might not have those things. However, Apple TV is pretty cheap ($100) and it’s useful for more than just MLB.tv. You’re an NBA fan and can get League Pass on it.
January 24th, 2012 at 3:38 PM
ATL, I didn’t know that about Fielder in FLA.
Still, I keep thinking groin pull every time I see that guy run the bases.
January 24th, 2012 at 3:39 PM
Fielder, Cabrera and V-Mart 3-4-5 is gonna be sick in 2013.
January 24th, 2012 at 3:40 PM
Was on the fence about following the Tribe on MLB TV.
/no longer is on the fence about following the Tribe on MLB TV
//buys new fly line and flies instead
January 24th, 2012 at 3:40 PM
That’s way too many years, and too much money to have invested in two defensive liabilities who have weight issues and play the same position, but it’s hard not to be excited about this right now as a Tigers fan. Hopefully the next 4 years of Cabrera/Fielder/Verlander in their primes will be worth the last 5 of Cabrera/Fielder being fat, lazy and overpaid.
January 24th, 2012 at 3:40 PM
SC, good call. I must look into it.
+1, for the “older generation” comment.
January 24th, 2012 at 3:41 PM
MLB.tv is also like $150 cheaper than Extra Innings. It’s $129.99 if you get it on the early bird special which should be starting in the next couple weeks.
I’ve had it for 3 years running thanks to clown. Best investment I ever made. I don’t spend $130 better at any point in the year. For baseball junkies, it’s the best thing ever.
One more thing, if you want to go back and watch any game from any team during the year, you can. I could go on for hours speaking about how awesome it is.
January 24th, 2012 at 3:41 PM
A certain type of gaming console, however. Still waiting for mlb.tv to be available on Wii.

You and the Hubby should just spring for Apple TV, Ceej. It’s got plenty of features on there you can use. You can play anything from your iTunes library on your TV/sound system. Only $100.
January 24th, 2012 at 3:43 PM
Hey SC, maybe you would know this- am I gonna have to rebuy the MLB At Bat App? I just noticed the old icon still says ’11, but maybe they will be updating it?
January 24th, 2012 at 3:44 PM
Avila and Peralta both go back to reality this year.
January 24th, 2012 at 3:44 PM
seriously. he was given zero time in the early debates. dude is da man.
January 24th, 2012 at 3:44 PM
SC – don’t get me wrong, I FUCKING LOVE MLBTV, but somethings telling me it may be a fools errand this year as a Tribe fan. However, the best part about the service is the no-questions-asked cancellation policy, so when your team is in the dumper (should be around May for the Tribe), you can go ahead and cancel (i.e. give up hope on your silly belief that a Cleveland team will ever win anything).
January 24th, 2012 at 3:44 PM
Yeah, but will there be any leftovers for the rest of the team once that threesome hits the post-game spread?
January 24th, 2012 at 3:44 PM
And I’m saying I think you are certifiably insane if you think they can use up the last few years of Prince’s prime, then convince some other team to take the rest of the contract. Exactly how good do you think he’s going to have to perform the next three years for someone to essentially give 6/$140 million to an aging (32 years old) first baseman with weight concerns?
January 24th, 2012 at 3:45 PM
I need to do some math and see if it it worth it to switch to Dish or Direct TV and get MLB.tv now that I have the interwebs at home. nothing would please me more than being able to call Cox and tell everyone there to go fuck themselves.
January 24th, 2012 at 3:45 PM
I’ve got a Roku, and love it. You don’t get the Apple integration, but I think that’s overrated anyway.
January 24th, 2012 at 3:45 PM
Why is the NFL too stupid to do this? And offer endzone cam exclusively for broadcasts?

January 24th, 2012 at 3:47 PM

January 24th, 2012 at 3:48 PM
I’ll second the Apple TV love. Got it as a gift from a brother last year. Now, I get Netflix, all my iTunes stuff, Youtube, MLB/NBA/NHL on streaming.
January 24th, 2012 at 3:48 PM
When you say you want to legalize weed, the REP establishment says thanks but no thanks. That means you need to raise coin on your own, a la Ron Paul. Johnson can’t do that.
Holy shit…is that an Ndub sighting?
January 24th, 2012 at 3:48 PM
Same thing with Pujols. Angels have to overpay later for great production now. It’s like leasing a car, you are basically buying the depreciation. Except this car has such an inflated sticker price, that you can’t possibly afford the depreciation and will just have to make payments until it runs out of miles, even as it is sputtering to an inevitable death.

January 24th, 2012 at 3:56 PM
Didn’t even see NDub. Damn. Glad I won’t be charged with anything after the disappearance. Was getting worried there. Gonna need a banders like explanation though.
January 24th, 2012 at 3:58 PM
And a post from earlier today shows exactly how useless sportswriters are:

Your Rangers TV guys are actually some of my favorites. They really get into the broadcast. I like those guys.
Among the worst are the Nationals (sorry, SROD), Pirates, Angels, Diamondbacks and Marlins. My favorite top 5 teams to listen to their home broadcast are Padres (Enberg FTW), Dodgers (Scully FTMFW), Orioles, Rangers and Cubs.

You forgot White Sox
January 24th, 2012 at 4:00 PM
NDub is back?
/prepares a platter of plain chicken breasts and bottled water
January 24th, 2012 at 4:00 PM
Nothing like Mr. Banders. I got busy and didn’t post. Realized I didn’t care that I wasn’t posting. Lurked, saw some of the conversation was just meh from unfamiliar names and/or the same idiots (who shall remain nameless), decided against posting, got busy again at work, returned today when I read about the USA Today purchase, then Prince signed, I got a boner and realized I had to talk about my Tigers, not my boner.
January 24th, 2012 at 4:00 PM
IIRC Charley Steiner is fairly good, and the Dodgers will be in good hands going forward. I’m ambivalent on the Red Sox guys. I like their radio better than TV guys.
/RIP Heidi Watney on NESN
January 24th, 2012 at 4:01 PM
Yankees, end of discussion.
January 24th, 2012 at 4:01 PM
it’s probably been pointed put and beaten to glue, but funny that a pizza baron buys this guy
to me anyway
January 24th, 2012 at 4:03 PM
but ndub, home is where you can talk about your team AND your boner
/rip flip saunders
January 24th, 2012 at 4:03 PM
I don’t mind Gubbie, but Victor Rojas is awful. I hate that guy. On a homerun call last year he went with “Oppo, Taco Time”
I like Steiner. He’s a good baseball guy.
January 24th, 2012 at 4:04 PM
I’m on board with MLB.tv. When I had a shit night job in Philly, I watched Orioles games on it all the time. It’s glorious.
January 24th, 2012 at 4:04 PM
Kay is grating. I usually listen to the road crew unless it’s Sawx, ChiSox or the road broadcast doesn’t show pitch count.
January 24th, 2012 at 4:04 PM
Thought Steiner was great when he did radio for the Yankees. That shitbag Sterling ran him out of town.
January 24th, 2012 at 4:04 PM
Wow, brainfart. Of course youre right.
January 24th, 2012 at 4:04 PM
Steiner would be a good color commentator, but as the play-by-play, he just can’t keep up. There is so much dead air in the Yankee broadcast.
January 24th, 2012 at 4:04 PM
Winner!

Though man, Giants/Tigers/Cubs, that fat kid couldn’t make up his mind.
January 24th, 2012 at 4:05 PM
I have actually grown to like Michael Kay… but yeah, Hawk Harrelson sucks. So does Steve Stone now. It’s sad.
January 24th, 2012 at 4:05 PM
SC, no apology necessary.
I dig your list of best 5. One who’s underrated is Dave Sims (Mariners). He sounds like he’s barely holding back sarcasm as the team struggles (and they often struggle).
I actually like the Nats guys. F.P. Santangelo is up-and-coming (let ‘er rip, indeed). He just needs more time in the saddle.
January 24th, 2012 at 4:05 PM
Wow, where’s the comment delete button? Can’t believe I confused Steiner and Sterling.
January 24th, 2012 at 4:05 PM
I actually like John Sterling too… I know, I’m terrible. But Suzyn Waldman SUCKS.
January 24th, 2012 at 4:05 PM
deng with a torn ligament in hand, no surgery, pain only issue
January 24th, 2012 at 4:06 PM
But Suzyn Waldman SUCKS.
rogah clemens! gawg’s bawx!
January 24th, 2012 at 4:06 PM
This is a good point. He tries to tell the story, and he’s just not Vin Scully. Only Scully is allowed to script the first two innings of a game.
January 24th, 2012 at 4:06 PM
A bitter Hawk this year doing play-by-play for a 63 win team could lead to his finest season yet at the call
January 24th, 2012 at 4:07 PM
googling that chicks name led me to this. amazing, and no, NSFW.
January 24th, 2012 at 4:07 PM
I’m probably in the minority, but when it comes to radio broadcasts (which is what Steiner does for the Dodgers), I like a little dead air. You get to hear the sounds of the stadium and it adds to the ambiance.
January 24th, 2012 at 4:07 PM
I was confused. I thought you just didn’t like his story-approach.
January 24th, 2012 at 4:07 PM
I think he dies at the mic this year.
January 24th, 2012 at 4:07 PM
SC – June 12, 13 and 14. I’m going to make EVERY EFFORT to hit up the Chi for Tigers at Cubs.
January 24th, 2012 at 4:07 PM
WTF ark, is it NSFW or not???
January 24th, 2012 at 4:08 PM
Part of what makes a Uecker call so great…rarely any banter with the guy who calls a couple of the middle innings and if he doesn’t have anything to say he’s not looking to fill the void
January 24th, 2012 at 4:08 PM
The Orioles somehow holding onto Gary Thorne is one of my favorite things in life.
January 24th, 2012 at 4:08 PM
I’m so glad we’re talking baseball, you guys.
January 24th, 2012 at 4:10 PM
Most TV crews are more boring than anything, it takes skill to at least be memorably annoying…the Mariner guys sound about as dead as that franchise is
January 24th, 2012 at 4:10 PM
Cory Provus. He used to do Cubs games on WGN, same role. Middle inning guy. Then he went to San Diego, then Milwaukee. Now he’s the Twins radio guy. Learned from some greats in Pat Hughes, Dick Enberg and Bob Uecker.
January 24th, 2012 at 4:10 PM
I do enjoy the Mets booth. The Phillies are getting better…just need to get rid of Gary Matthews between the 4th and 6th innings. Although I prefer our radio guys (LA & Franske rule)
January 24th, 2012 at 4:10 PM
I’m not ready yet. Last year sucked. I’ll get there by April though.
January 24th, 2012 at 4:11 PM
Amen. I don’t even want to watch the Super Bowl, too painful.
January 24th, 2012 at 4:11 PM
Per Jayson Stark… Prince’s deal has opt-outs?
January 24th, 2012 at 4:11 PM
Chris Wheeler is an abortion.
January 24th, 2012 at 4:12 PM
I have done almost nothing productive since this signing was announced. OK… I’ve done actually nothing.
January 24th, 2012 at 4:12 PM
But Larry Andersen rules, I wish he was on TV still when I lived in the area.
January 24th, 2012 at 4:12 PM
I’m sure it’s the case with most, but the Cardinals TV guys (especially the mad Hungarian) blatent, over-the-top homerism gets obnoxious pretty quick. give me a half-drunk Mike Shannon on the radio any day of the week.
January 24th, 2012 at 4:14 PM
I concur on the Cards TV guys. It’s the same reason I can’t listen to that fucking asshole Brenanman do the Reds. Might sound homerism, but Len and Bob do a good job not being homers. They call out the team all the time when they make mistakes. God knows we make enough of them. Brenly is especially keen on ripping guys that don’t run out fly balls or players that lollygag to groundballs.
January 24th, 2012 at 4:14 PM
Truth.
/still misses Harry
January 24th, 2012 at 4:15 PM
I miss my Harry too… didn’t realize how much until Ron died last year. Two pieces of my childhood gone. Sad.
January 24th, 2012 at 4:15 PM
When do season game tickets go on sale?
January 24th, 2012 at 4:16 PM
I loved Gary Thorne absolutely destroying the Yankees for all the ‘make-up game’ stuff after Flanny died. I never heard him get that angry. He was probably wasted.
January 24th, 2012 at 4:17 PM
Per Jayson Stark… Prince’s deal has opt-outs?
Oh, yeah? Timeframes mentioned?
January 24th, 2012 at 4:18 PM
I’m pretty confident Gary drinks in the booth on most nights now, Buck. He’s still a helluva broadcaster but the O’s suckitude is wearing on him.
January 24th, 2012 at 4:21 PM
Oh, he very much does. During the 7th, there’s a Jack Daniels ad, he said ‘Please drink…responsibly.’ He said to a blogger that pause gets longer, and longer, and longer as the season goes on.
January 24th, 2012 at 4:21 PM
I’m pretty sure Mike Ilitch doesn’t give a rat’s ass about year four of this deal, considering he’s 143 years old, and I’m fine with that.
Also like to remind everyone that Little Sleazer’s, while inedible, is excellent for minor home repairs, so stock up on those Hot-n-Readys.
January 24th, 2012 at 4:22 PM
As per Heyman – there is NO opt-outs in Prince’s deals.
January 24th, 2012 at 4:31 PM
HOLY SHIT! BITCHES!!!!!!!!!!!
Congratulations on your Carlos Lee Starter Kit
HAHA!
January 24th, 2012 at 4:32 PM
huh. tried to link a tvf post and nothing comes up….five times at least.
either i’m banned or those kind of links are…
now
January 24th, 2012 at 4:33 PM
mantis did you ever see the franzke Q&A i bugged you about?
January 24th, 2012 at 4:49 PM
And I’m saying I think you are certifiably insane if you think they can use up the last few years of Prince’s prime, then convince some other team to take the rest of the contract.
You’re right. Never before have one of the deep pocketed teams taken on on a terrible contract. Good god. The Angels took VERNON WELLS last year.
January 24th, 2012 at 4:54 PM
Copy, paste, save. You are welcome to rub it in my face in three years. I just can’t see it under any circumstances. I’ve been wrong before, and certainly could be now.
Not only did Toronto shed the Wells contract ($81 million saved) they GOT Mike Napoli for it. Which is just insane. I guess I shouldn’t underestimate the stupidity of people with more money than sense.
January 24th, 2012 at 5:19 PM
I mean it’s less likely than likely. Just not inplausible. It just takes one desperate team and a dumb GM.
January 24th, 2012 at 6:52 PM
Yeah I did, it was pretty cool. Really enjoyed it.
