Big Lead Sports Got Acquired by the USA Today Sports Media Group. Will Anything Change? A Handy FAQ.
Hey look! An old media company bought a new media company! What the heck does it all mean?
I’m here to help.
Biggest question: Will anything change? Will there be significant changes?
A: This was also a popular question in 2010 when the site was sold to FSV (which later became Big Lead Sports). All that changed was the look of the site (it needed a makeover) and we added writers. Expect more of the same. USA Today has quite the reservoir of resources. I suspect at some point, the BIG LEAD SPORTS banner will change to USA Today Sports Media Group (or something).
Q: Will the Roundup be changed?
A: No.
Q: Will the site be incorporating colorful maps, a trademark of USA Today?
A: I’m a sucker for a good map, so maybe! But probably not.
Q: Will any of us be writing for USA Today, as in the actual paper?
A: That could happen at some point, but the top priority (by far) is to continue to develop this site.
Q: What are the comscore implications?
A: Only about 18 people care about this, but yes, USA Today will absorb all the comscore numbers from Big Lead Sports. My rudimentary math skills tell me that 18ish plus 13ish = 31ish, which should be good for 4th place until at least September, when the NFL starts up again.
Q: Can you put swear words in the headline? What about in posts? Will you have to tone it down?
A: Passionate writing occasionally requires the use of obscenities. The powers that be – we’ll get to them in a moment – seem to like the site’s edge. There’s an unidentified journalistic line out there, and we’ll try not to cross it.
Q: What about opinions?
A: We’ll still have them.
Q: Are you in competition with USA Today for stories?
A: Yes. Someone asked this question on a (marathon) conference call earlier, and the answer from USAT brass was unequivocally yes. So the goal will be to continue to break news, especially on the media front. If you’re a new reader, this is what we’ve broken lately: Pat Forde left ESPN for Yahoo, Jon Heyman left SI for CBS, and Jim Rome’s TV show was leaving ESPN (for CBS).
Q: When the hell is the mobile site coming, you’ve been promising that for years!
A: Correction – I did think one was coming about three years ago, and it was supposed to be a priority, but it never happened. As soon as I familiarize myself with the new tech department, I’ll begin gently pestering them about it. And yes, I know USA Today has a slick, easy-to-navigate mobile site.
Q: So who are the new USA Today overlords?
A: Tom Beusse is the new head of the USA Today Sports Media Group. He’s atop the pyramid. Dave Morgan (aka, the Guy Who Built Yahoo Sports) is the Senior VP of Content & Editor in Chief of the USA Today Sports Media Group and right beneath Beusse. Here’s some background on Morgan. He’s already plucked a couple big-time pros from Yahoo.
Q: Where do I send my resume when you begin expanding?
A: Jmcintyre@TheBigLead.com

Wow Jason, thanks for actually addressing this
January 24th, 2012 at 1:32 PM
Will CRM be delivering the newspaper outside my hotel room door personally now? /high fives no one in particular

If you’re a new reader, this is what we’ve broken lately:
uh-huh, sure
January 24th, 2012 at 1:33 PM
This mean conclusions will be formed for us?
January 24th, 2012 at 1:35 PM
please give Jason Lisk a raise in pay, and when you’ve done that, please scour the earth for more guys like Jason Lisk to write for your site.
Thanks.

Q: Will any of us be writing for USA Today, as in the actual paper?
The universe will unfold into itself when Duffy’s byline shows up in the print edition.
January 24th, 2012 at 1:35 PM
Congrats Jason!
January 24th, 2012 at 1:35 PM
any changes to commenting?

USA Today Headline – “Michigan Man Solves BCS Crisis – Hint: They’re Racist” by Tyler Duffy
January 24th, 2012 at 1:36 PM
Yes, everyone must use their name.
(no)
January 24th, 2012 at 1:36 PM
any changes to commenting?
the word golf will get autocorrected to “I crave penis”
January 24th, 2012 at 1:36 PM
So I take it this means the Russo dude flipped this site and is now done with it?
January 24th, 2012 at 1:36 PM
Yeah, congrats Jason. You gettin’ drunk on champagne tonight?
January 24th, 2012 at 1:37 PM
Duffy couldn’t write for a print paper since it’s a lot more work to rush door-to-door with a jar of white-out to do last minute edits
My kingdom for an edit function, could spare threads of all the “*[Correct word]” posts which are mostly unnecessary since it’s usually obvious what the intention was in the first place
January 24th, 2012 at 1:37 PM
Link in commenter name must take people to your own facebook page.
January 24th, 2012 at 1:37 PM
Yes, everyone must use their name.
if you’re looking for some sort of standard on that, say so, because I”ll change mine right now. Forget Bob Ley and his restraining order (and what that monkey did to his mom)
January 24th, 2012 at 1:37 PM
For some reason picking a screengrab of the USA Today from summer 07 strikes me as funny.
January 24th, 2012 at 1:38 PM
You will draw and/or form your own conclusions!
Smedium shirts for all!
January 24th, 2012 at 1:38 PM
are you on the member panel that discusses these changes? i think not…you don’t have the crest on your jacket.
January 24th, 2012 at 1:38 PM
Be honest, duffy was the only one to ask this question, right?
January 24th, 2012 at 1:38 PM
This bears repeating:
January 24th, 2012 at 1:38 PM
He paid low 7 figures for TBL, right? I have to imagine he flipped for slightly higher low 7 figures, no?
January 24th, 2012 at 1:39 PM
will you be handling our requests to NOT have USA today left outside our hotel room doors?

January 24th, 2012 at 1:40 PM
Will USA Today sponsor TBL meet ups to drive commenting?
January 24th, 2012 at 1:40 PM
Q: Are handjobs worth a damn?
A: No.
Q: Should a woman ever take pride in her ability to give one?
A: No.
January 24th, 2012 at 1:40 PM
Yes, but when he didn’t like the response, he retracted it.
January 24th, 2012 at 1:40 PM
Faithful reader since the Harold Reynolds Scandal! Congrats Jason!
January 24th, 2012 at 1:40 PM
Congrats Jason, well deserved. That said, don’t let it get fucked up (i.e. Deadspin)
January 24th, 2012 at 1:41 PM
He paid low 7 figures for TBL, right?
he probably actually paid 550,000, and then added a contract for five years at 100K salary, just so that could be said.
Either way, he added to the gold reserves in JMac’s basement.
January 24th, 2012 at 1:41 PM
Ritty – How many commenters do you think we’d lose if it went back to their Facebook pages?
January 24th, 2012 at 1:41 PM
I for one welcome our new overloads. Congrats Jason, awesome job.
January 24th, 2012 at 1:41 PM
Yeah…this is Russo’s company that was sold, not this site. Russo owned this site and sold it, along with tons of other sites, and now I assume he’s toasting the town somewhere tropical.
January 24th, 2012 at 1:41 PM
How much did you, Jason McIntyre, profit from this?
January 24th, 2012 at 1:42 PM
dunno…i know a handful of people here on facebook.
January 24th, 2012 at 1:43 PM

All this news means is that instead of going from Russo to Jason, it now goes from USA Today, to Russo, to Jason, to the cleaners. Right Hernia?
January 24th, 2012 at 1:44 PM
A: Correction – I did think one was coming about three years ago, and it was supposed to be a priority, but it never happened. As soon as I familiarize myself with the new tech department, I’ll begin gently pestering them about it. And yes, I know USA Today has a slick, easy-to-navigate mobile site.
I appreciate that this was addressed. But if you knew after the fact three years ago that the mobile site wasn’t going to happen, why didn’t you say anything?
Congratulations JMac. I’m still going to complain about Jets posts though.
January 24th, 2012 at 1:44 PM
I don’t think we’d lose any per se, but I think some would comment a lot less and with a lot fewer cuss words and with a lot fewer shots fired.
January 24th, 2012 at 1:44 PM
Ritty – How many commenters do you think we’d lose if it went back to their Facebook pages?
dunno…i know a handful of people here on facebook
Same here. And on Twitter. And then I get confused who is who in regards to TBL moniker and real names. Except for Jay V.
January 24th, 2012 at 1:45 PM
that isn’t true. i don’t care either way.
January 24th, 2012 at 1:45 PM
fuck facebook integration
fuck it right in the ass
January 24th, 2012 at 1:45 PM
Congrats, Mr. Russo.
January 24th, 2012 at 1:46 PM
who wants to see baby pictures?
I’m more interested in random quotes from the bible.
January 24th, 2012 at 1:46 PM
I saw a sports business journal writer say he was hearing the entire FSV/Big Lead Sports company went for $30 million. Would love to know how much of that Russo gets and how much, if any, the operators of the sites themselves get. CRM needs more PBR and cooking classes, so I bet he can use the extra coin.
January 24th, 2012 at 1:46 PM
i don’t care either way.
and that right there is the nexus of your problem in life, oskie, if that even is your real name.

Ritty – How many commenters do you think we’d lose if it went back to their Facebook pages?
No one worth a damn. While I enjoy my voluntary anonymity on here, if pressed, I have no problem people knowing my name. Shit, half the commenters here already know practically everything else of general importance about me.
January 24th, 2012 at 1:47 PM
Self employed here too. 1099, baby. I’m surprised I haven’t had random facebook requests since the real me is pretty easy to find over there.
January 24th, 2012 at 1:47 PM
He looks like a giant douche bag.
It’s funny because it’s true
January 24th, 2012 at 1:47 PM
Gonna tip back a few with Hernia at the company Christmas party next year?
January 24th, 2012 at 1:48 PM
I’m more interested in random quotes from the bible.
I can help you with that.
January 24th, 2012 at 1:48 PM
I don’t fear reprisals from my employer.
January 24th, 2012 at 1:48 PM
I hope this turns out better for Russo than when Hef sold MLJ to Bloguin. As was with Daimler-Chrysler, “merger of equals” my ass.
January 24th, 2012 at 1:48 PM
I’m sure he’d thank you, but he’s face deep in cocaine and hooker tits at the moment.
January 24th, 2012 at 1:49 PM
There’s an unidentified journalistic line out there, and we’ll try not to cross it.

ha, rex. you beat me to it, tho i wonder what he doesn;t want cross into

I’m a sucker for a good map, so maybe! But probably not.
Who are you, Peter King?
Will you be covering more women’s sports as mandated by Christine Brennan?
Seriously man, congratulations.
January 24th, 2012 at 1:52 PM
I don’t think I did too much of that on facebook. But I’m fine with that assessment as for my performance over here.
January 24th, 2012 at 1:53 PM
THis made me laugh. I’ve never seen this dude before, but anyone with the last name of Russo probably likes hookers and blow, so this is exactly what he’s doing right now.
January 24th, 2012 at 1:53 PM
Ritty – How many commenters do you think we’d lose if it went back to their Facebook pages?
Don’t do Facebook. Lost interest a few years ago.
Jason, I was a big USA Today fan way back when (remember when a copy was 10 cents?). I kinda lost interest as other sources could provide content and stats better/faster.
You and your team feel strategically that this is a good move. Congratulations.
On some level, some of us may be faceless commenters. But, I have learned from, and learned some insight of, everyone who comments on this site. I enjoy the daily back-and-forth, and hope that the new management doesn’t implement changes that make good business sense but erode the communal feel.
January 24th, 2012 at 1:53 PM
I’d be opposed to Facebook integration, I like the semi-anoymous nature here.
I’d also be opposed to it. But if the powers that be think they can use that as a means to scare away those that are only willing to say what’s on their mind behind anonymity, then I’m here to say that it won’t affect me.
January 24th, 2012 at 1:53 PM

He was part of a Laurel and Hardy talk radio tandem here in NYC. He’s a rabid SF Giants lover, and Yankee hater. His rant on Pacman Jones is pretty sweet.

January 24th, 2012 at 1:55 PM
I created a page in 2003 and the only reason I still have it is my boss is all into social media and thinks we should all have Facebook pages. I’m on that site maybe 4 times a year (seriously) and am so confused by all of the changes that when I do go over there I quickly leave and go back to Twitter, a far better place to be.
January 24th, 2012 at 1:55 PM
I’m not sure I understand all of those commenter memes.
January 24th, 2012 at 1:56 PM

I’m facebook friends with many on here (and real life with some, good luck guessing which ones) but I just think integration is stupid no matter what. Spotify, Washington Post Reader, twitter, anything. It’s a separate site. Stop spamming people.

I don’t understand people who hate facebook. It’s the only way I keep in touch with a lot of people, including family. Some of it is self-serving, sure, but so is Twitter. The worst facebook posts from my friends are usually minute-by-minute occurrences on twitter.
January 24th, 2012 at 1:58 PM
1) What can The Big USA Lead Today Sports Media Conglomerate do, to convince me, Joe Q. Jets Fan, that negative Jets articles will keep appearing on a weekly basis (assuming no meteor strike in Indianapolis this Feb. 5)?
2) Why do I have to wait 10 minutes to post a comment on the article I want to comment on, after logging in, but can post immediately on random other articles, that I do not want to comment on?
January 24th, 2012 at 1:58 PM

I don’t have it, but the wifey uses it 85% of the time as a photo/video sharing of the baby. The other 5% is long distance family interaction.
January 24th, 2012 at 2:00 PM
I don’t hate it. I just don’t much care for seeing what someone whom I don’t care to hang out with is doing for their 4th of July holiday. I’m not a big voyeur either, so the photos of so-and-so whom I haven’t seen in a while does little for me. My wife, on the other hand, can’t get enough of that site and when our daughter gets here, she’ll be the one that won’t stop posting photos up. That shit would annoy me.
January 24th, 2012 at 2:00 PM
Being one of the 18 people that cares, those are unique visitor numbers so simple addition isn’t correct. Not being a dick here, just trying to help you be accurate. You’ll have some overlap with people the visit USA Today sports properties and those that visit here. Might land somewhere in the middle but seeing as I don’t know what USATSMG’s demographics are, I can’t even begin to estimate.
Suffice to say, it will not be 31M UVs.

like the time I caught the ferry over to Shelbyville. I needed a new heel for my shoe, so, I decided to go to Morganville, which is what they called Shelbyville in those days. So I tied an onion to my belt, which was the style at the time. Now, to take the ferry cost a nickel, and in those days, nickels had pictures of bumblebees on ‘em. Give me five bees for a quarter, you’d say.
January 24th, 2012 at 2:02 PM
Well, there’s that, too. At least Tiger didn’t buy a General Lee and toot his own horn on twitter.

Yeah, see, I’m kind of the opposite. It’s a living yearbook for me and I like seeing my dumbass friends and acquaintances do dumb stuff then post pictures about it. But really, it’s a 10 minute distraction for me every morning, a place where I post cat videos on my wife’s page, make fun of rival schools, and that’s about it.

January 24th, 2012 at 2:06 PM
I don’t understand people who hate facebook.
Don’t hate it as much as “just don’t care”.
The vast majority of folk I wanna keep up with, I do thru other means. Calls, e-mails, etc.
In addition, as my marriage was failing, my ex thought it cool to flirt with a guy we knew at church. By itself, it didn’t kill our marriage, but it sure didn’t help. He initiated, she enjoyed it. That left a sour taste in my mouth.
Got no long-lost girlfriends, or anyone from my past that I care to chat with. I have a small cadre of good friends, and we know how to find one another without Facebook.

That concerns me as well. How many commenters do you think there are that make up the core of this site?
January 24th, 2012 at 2:08 PM
Did you see the new Luke Donald video on Youtube where he works with some pimple-busting golf engineer to find his “perfect shaft?” (their words, not mine)
Luke is about 27 levels of disinterested. It’s unintentionally hilarious. Dude has such a good swing for being a little swaylike.
January 24th, 2012 at 2:08 PM
Luckily I work in a start-up and people don’t give a shit what we say. Of course if we ever achieve our goals and get paid, I’ll probably have to link to something other than my twitter handle as it’s my name. But seeing as how my boss cusses more than I do, I don’t think that’s a big deal at the moment.
January 24th, 2012 at 2:08 PM
Lots of congrats to TBL here (well deserved), but I’m wondering what kind of money he actually made in this deal, seeing as he was no longer owner of the site. I assume some sort of bonus was in order.

January 24th, 2012 at 2:10 PM
This would be a giant mistake if you did this because:
1.) As noted by others here, many read/comment here during the work day (this is one of about 10 or 12 browser tabs I have open). Employers would likely frown upon learning one of their employees spend time commenting on a blog during working hours.
2.) Even if you wanted to be bold and comment using your facebook account during working hours, many would not be able to do that as facebook is blocked by many corporate networks. They could use their smart phones, but it’s not the same thing.
January 24th, 2012 at 2:10 PM
It’s not what is said, but the amount of time spent on this site. If they see I’ve made 20 comments in the course of a workday, I’m sure there would be questions of my productivity.

Exactly. I’ve exchanged emails with a handful of commenters. And anyone who has been in the TBL Baseball Fantasy League the last two seasons also knows my name. Knowing names isn’t an issue, it’s keeping ourselves anonymous when future employers Google our names to see where we show up on the internet (which is bullshit in and of itself, but it happens).

It’s not exclusive nor should it be, but I do think the limited number of comments/regulars advances the site’s overall narrative. Too many and not only do individual commenters opinions, reactions, etc. get drowned out, but so too goes the value of moderation on some of the opinions expressed by the actual bloggers. I had to order a wedding present for a Dutch friend today. And the order form doesn’t translate since it’s some sort of applet. All I know is that a 75 Euro gift card had 3,5 extra kosten since I used a creditcard as a betaalmethode. Plus 7.5 Euro in verzendkosten!

I’d translate for you but I speak no Dutch. My ancestors came over in the early 19th century and settled in the South. So I’m pretty far removed from the majority of my ancestry.

I made this mistake with Phillymantis, and felt bad… but really, you either have to be anon or not. Halfway just gives people a little scavenger hunt to break up the day.

Well apparently Cowboy Mike just dropped my name again, so whatever.
January 24th, 2012 at 2:56 PM
My Twitter handle used to just be my name, now my name is in it but isn’t the actual name (ridiculous how many people don’t realize that fact) but my full name is only trackable through Facebook. Can go from Facebook to the soccer blog to my Twitter.
I don’t have anything to hide other than being a jackass, really. I don’t have any scandalous pictures or anything online.

I had my first name on twitter, but I canned it recently. Once I made the Reggie White/Mark Anderson joke, I realized it was time to either behave or anonymize.

Oh man, seriously. Also when their username has another name in it that isn’t their actual name, I usually just give up and call them that one.

Facebook – Not on facebook, never have been, neither is wife. Just like some stuff not out there on the www.
FB integration – horrible idea.
I was/am attracted to this site because it is raw (or lets say rawer than most). The comments are raw… and they are not always so mean spirited, they are just unfiltered back and forth fucking with each other. It is great really. But sometimes it can read pretty, lets say un-pc, especially read out of context. I am not an active commentator, but I would hate to see that curbed in. Sometimes I spend more time reading comments sections than the articles. I think it is one of the unique aspects of this site. I think removing the choice to stay anonymous in this forum would be a mistake.
If being bought by USA today meant this site reigns in it’s edginess then that is a bad side affect to me. I am a little worried that USA today might have more cause for concern with regard to what is shown on a website with it’s name on it.

my first week on the job, we just moved into a new office and the big boss man, whom i had never met before but didn’t look a day older than 30, asks if any of us wanted some help. of course, we’re all joking around, and i just go, as sarcastically as possible, “HELL NO.”

I work in employment law and that would be one of the craziest things I’ve ever heard from clients who get fired. Best one involved feeding a coworker Beggin Strips.
Back in college I had a workstudy in the student union one summer, it was me and another guy and we worked from seven in the morning until noon. The last week we realized we got paid even if we got fired, which was nice, because we’re sitting there with our supervisor and she’s bitching about her hands hurting from playing video games all night and he immediately hits back with “well now your back’s gonna hurt ’cause you just pulled landscaping duty.” Fired on the spot. One of the funniest moments of my life.

I loved working at a chain restaurant in college. I worked at the Lonestar in Boone and it got to the point where I would steal kegs and sell them on Craigslist. Just walked out the back door with them (benefit of being able to carry one easily). Free beer Sundays were a good time for employees, and of course taking a pie and crab home every night to get blitzed with.

The only job I’ve ever gotten fired from was when I worked on a political campaign. I don’t have any funny stories about it or the campaign, or at least none that I’m willing to share, but by the time I was fired, just after the primary, I was so sick of that job and all the travel that I actually felt relieved. It was one of the best feelings of my life actually.
