Tea Partier Tim Thomas Explains Shunning the Bruins’ White House Invite
Goalkeeper Tim Thomas did not join the rest of the Boston Bruins meeting with President Obama to celebrate their Stanley Cup Triumph. Here is his statement, justifying why.
“I believe the Federal government has grown out of control, threatening the Rights, Liberties, and Property of the People.
This is being done at the Executive, Legislative, and Judicial level. This is in direct opposition to the Constitution and the Founding Fathers vision for the Federal government.
Because I believe this, today I exercised my right as a Free Citizen, and did not visit the White House. This was not about politics or party, as in my opinion both parties are responsible for the situation we are in as a country. This was about a choice I had to make as an INDIVIDUAL.
This is the only public statement I will be making on this topic. TT”
You can read more on Thomas’ INDIVIDUAL beliefs here.

You just called Thomas a racist and yet there is nothing racial in his statement. That’s pretty irresponsible, Duffy.
Tea party or not, everyone has a right to hold their own views. Whether you agree with them or not, Thomas stood by his convictions and was not going against any team rules. The club could have forced him to go, but they chose not to.

I believe salaries of professional athletes have grown out of control.
This is being done at the football, basketball, baseball, and hockey levels. Because I beleive this I excercise my right as a free citizen and will not attend professional sporting events. This is the only public statement I will be makiing on this topic.

Oh boy, glad this got posted now instead of middle of the day. Would’ve caused some serious shit storm. I’ll just say that I hated GWB’s policies, but if I ever for any reason got invited to meet him, I would definitely go.
January 23rd, 2012 at 7:22 PM
Took it out, because it was going to cause more inflammatory commentary and defeat the purpose of the joke, which was to point out the obvious fallacy in the “founding fathers wanted…” argument. I wasn’t calling anyone a racist.
January 23rd, 2012 at 7:22 PM
Since it doesn’t say “a black man being president is in direct opposition to the Constitution”, and so forth, on that website you linked, how about you find that particular statement for us, and link to THAT, you fucking douche guzzler.
January 23rd, 2012 at 7:22 PM
I’m just gonna say it’s a petty way to disrespect the office of the Presidency.

January 23rd, 2012 at 7:25 PM
i think it is pretty cool to be able to say that you shook hands with the most powerful man in the world, regardless of party affiliation and ideology. with that said, I salute Thomas for standing on his beliefs with a deep conviction.
January 23rd, 2012 at 7:27 PM
Something somthing something Tim Thomas hates black people something something.
/he didn’t really say that
January 23rd, 2012 at 7:28 PM
Tim Thomas and his obscene use of all caps is disgusting.
January 23rd, 2012 at 7:28 PM
Feels like “deep convictions” is more like his stab at 15 minutes.
January 23rd, 2012 at 7:29 PM
I disagree with Tim Thomas’ political leanings. I agree with his decision to exercise the right to not attend this gathering.
January 23rd, 2012 at 7:30 PM
Allegedly.

//Wings are on playing for 1st
January 23rd, 2012 at 7:31 PM
So you agree with him making himself more than the team? There’s 25 other players who went and had no issue. Thomas took his holier than thou argument above the rest of the collective, and I hope the team beats the shit out of him.
January 23rd, 2012 at 7:31 PM
Won a Stanley Cup and the Conn Smythe last year. He had a good half hour for that.
January 23rd, 2012 at 7:31 PM
Obama wishes all Tea Partiers would follow his lead and stop showing up to Washington
No one’s arguing against his right, but as free speech cuts both ways we’re still allowed to say it’s a petty move…so long as his teammates don’t care that he made a team celebration about him this isn’t a big deal other than I now can pick a side in their playoff series come spring
January 23rd, 2012 at 7:32 PM
By the way, why MUST the country be governed by how founding fathers envisioned it? It seems like a rather silly way to govern the country, based on what some old fart said 200 years ago.
Now replace founding father with God, Allah, Yahweh, Rama, Buddha etc,
/ducks
January 23rd, 2012 at 7:33 PM
Tim Thomas and his desire for Mild sauce on the wings instead of the standard hot or barbecue is disgusting.
January 23rd, 2012 at 7:33 PM
I found my old wing-nut hat the other day.
January 23rd, 2012 at 7:33 PM
The team doesn’t view it this way. They had the opportunity to force Timmy to go and chose not to. The gathering is optional. The man exercised that option and chose not to go because of his own convictions.
He’s not the first and won’t be the last to do so.
January 23rd, 2012 at 7:34 PM
The founding fathers would be “smh’ing” at the pure idiocy of our political system at this point. They definitely would not like all of the God invocation as well.
January 23rd, 2012 at 7:34 PM
Talking about the general public…like myself, who had never heard of this guy until he made a statement like this.
/probably will forget him by tomorrow
January 23rd, 2012 at 7:35 PM
never a fan of barbecued wings. wings should be relegated to more unique falvoring, like buffalo, garlic, curry. give my a full size drum stick with barbecue. but agree, mild sauce is a for pussies.
January 23rd, 2012 at 7:35 PM
All the liberals who are killing him over this were complaining last week about the federal government, specifically the executive branch and legislative, over SOPA and PIPA for “threatening the Rights, Liberties, and Property of the People.”
An athlete does it today and he’s this or that negative term.
Oh, the consistency!
January 23rd, 2012 at 7:36 PM
I’m no Obama fan, hell, I’m not a fan of anyone who’s going to be the next President. The fact is that you respect the position, not the man. That said, white Boston guy not shaking hand of black President isn’t exactly knocking anyone over in shock.
January 23rd, 2012 at 7:36 PM

January 23rd, 2012 at 7:39 PM
Let’s be honest though, are we really gonna sit here and pretend that there isn’t an undercurrent of racism running thru the Tea Party?
I’m reminded of the Dave Chappelle skit. “Fuhrman, FUHRMAN! GERMAN! It’s a racist name, your honor. I bet he says the N word a lot”
January 23rd, 2012 at 7:39 PM
No, if I was arguing against his right I’d say he should be jailed for the infraction…I’m still allowed to disagree with his decision
January 23rd, 2012 at 7:40 PM
Him not wanting to hang out with his foreign coworkers outside of the workplace while his team is being honored by a black President doesn’t prove that he’s a racist, but it doesn’t prove that he isn’t either.
January 23rd, 2012 at 7:40 PM

January 23rd, 2012 at 7:44 PM

January 23rd, 2012 at 7:56 PM
Is anybody questioning his “right” to do what he did? Of course he can. He caused more of a ruckus than if he would have just gone to shake a guys hand though. I’m sure he’s shaken hands with hockey players he doesn’t like.
January 23rd, 2012 at 7:57 PM
This is what should be called an AMERICAN. Not some party. We all bitch about the government overstepping their boundaries. Dubya’s blatant disregard for the constitution after 9/11 will forever be a dark spot in our history. He was THE DECIDER and nothing was ever done to curb what he wanted to do. It just continued with Obama and it will probably continue for many more presidencies before something is forced to happen.
January 23rd, 2012 at 7:58 PM
Also, laughing at the founding fathers reference. Good way to make your views look idiotic I guess.

Unquestionably. Rask’s meltdowns have some entertainment value. I’m sure Timmy is enjoying all the attention, though. He’s also smart to stick to the one statement and not make himself available for interviews on the topic.
January 23rd, 2012 at 8:02 PM

January 23rd, 2012 at 8:15 PM
Maybe I oversimplified things. I was trying to make the point that Tim Thomas’ opinion on government and the intent of the U.S. constitution is about as relevant as Obama commenting on the finer points of goaltending.
January 23rd, 2012 at 8:16 PM
It would be nice if there was any meaningful media coverage over NDAA, SOPA, PIPA etc. Oh well.
On a more positive note, there’s some blonde with godzilla biscuits sitting 1st row behind the Wings bench. Love those shots during games. Pretty sure it’s standard at every NHL game that some chick(s) with big tits sits behind the bench.

95% of KU fans agree with you. It used to be a simple blue outline of the state of Kansas and then Lawrence was marked by a very small Jayhawk or star or something.
See, that’s cool. Yeah, big bird needs to go.

KC, that big honkin’ bird seems to be a trend on a lot of courts these days. You’d think the home of Naismith and Phog Allen wouldn’t need to resort to such garish displays.

For a team that has been rumored to “break up the Big Three”, they look real good tonight. Pierce has been killin’ it lately.
It’s all backups on the floor for the C’s now.

I agree. I just assume a lot of athletic department employees are related to whoever the hell makes garish basketball court designs. I’m used to watching KU games with the big ass Jayhawk on the floor, but when I watch KU games with folks that don’t normally watch KU games, they can’t find the ball on fast breaks. That middle third of yellow, blue and red screws with their vision.

KU gets on runs right after the second half tip. If aTm can stem that, then they have a good chance. Robinson is ineffective and after that fast start, KU’s offense is stagnant. They only played 10 good minutes against Oklahoma and that was the first ten in the second half.

January 23rd, 2012 at 10:20 PM
I can’t find a picture of it, which may well be a good thing, but one of the ugliest basketball floors ever was the floor the Rockets used in the Compaq Center in 1996-97…..The ‘paint’ was actually wood colored with the areas inside the three point arcs being a bluish purple with stars peppered all over. Their horrendous logo was blown up huge in the middle of the floor.
In the words of Eliot Gould in Ocean’s 11, it was a gaudy monstrosity.
January 23rd, 2012 at 10:20 PM

January 23rd, 2012 at 10:24 PM
Agreed. They could be scary if they get healthy. But man, that game Saturday between the Bruins and the Rangers was fucking great. I love the way Torts has them playing. The final four in the East is going to be a meat grinder.

I sort of want to find a picture so that I can prove that it actually existed and was not a figment of my nightmares.
The floor was so aesthetically offensive, that the NBA made them change the floor in ’98 or ’99 because the floor was so busy/ugly that it was difficult to find the ball on the floor during a television broadcast.

That rocket looks like an angry penis.
That’s an…interesting observation.
When the logo came out, there was almost universal hatred of it. The guy who designed the logo which the final logo was based on, and which was much much much less cartoonish while remaining faithful to the Rockets’ red and gold color scheme, was interviewed by the Houston Chronicle a few weeks after the new logo came out. He mentioned how he’d been getting hate mail about the logo and agreed to be interviewed by the Chronicle so that he could put out the fact that he was not responsible for that shark toothed, needle-nosed purple disaster.

On a semi-related note. Jim Crane mentioned today in a press conference that he’s exploring new uniforms and a name change for the Astros in 2013. I’d be a fan of new uniforms, but he better not change the name.

January 23rd, 2012 at 10:38 PM
No changing the Astros name! ms, what color scheme would you want?
I liked the simple white/grey with dark brownish trim (Bagwell era) unis (without pinstripe). The burnt-orange-like ones are distinctive, but I’m not a big fan of ‘em.
January 23rd, 2012 at 10:39 PM
I get that, but I still find it funny the Bruins were somehow absolved of doing the same thing. Like this year when they react with shock and horror that one of their guys would dare be suspended.
Thing is, they’re just a great team. This year, however, I think the Rangers and Flyers – at least – will wear them down, like Western teams are typically worn down before the final.

100% honest – I didn’t hear anyone arguing that Marchand shouldn’t have been suspended. He had already been in front of Shanahan twice before that. He absolutely deserved the suspension. And, yeah…he better be careful because he IS getting a reputation as a dirty player. Which is a shame, because he has legitimate skills. It’s one thing to be a pest or a rat, it’s another to be flat-out dirty.
January 23rd, 2012 at 10:43 PM
Bring back the Oilers logo
January 23rd, 2012 at 10:43 PM
I don’t know. Flyers have racked up some pretty significant concussions over the last couple months.
I think Bryzgalov might have one too, he just doesn’t know it since he’s had it for so long.
January 23rd, 2012 at 10:44 PM
He didn’t mention any ideas. He went out of his way to say that it was only an idea and that no decisions had been made.
My problem with that is that he said in the same press conference that he is keen to change the uniforms, and if they choose to have new ones b 2013, then they’d have to notify MLB by around opening day of this year. Well, no team is going to make new uniforms before a name change. If they are keen on new uniforms for 2013, then it stands to reason that they would go ahead and change the team name too. And if they are going to do a lot market research and engage a design firm before they decide, which they haven’t yet according to Crane, that would it seems also have to happen by opening day. Team name change decisions aren’t made in two months, I think Crane is already looking to change things and this press conference was a test balloon. That makes me nervous.
January 23rd, 2012 at 10:46 PM
Houston Anchors, in honor of Carlos Lee’s contract.

Geez, ms. I realize the new owner wants to put his stamp on things. Ego-driven change tends to be short-sighted, though. There is a lot of Astros history he could leverage (and no, not the rainbow orange jerseys from the 80s).
MLB put that lead time in for licensing and whatnot, I guess.
Hiring a design firm portends disaster. You might end up with “Houston Port Authority Mariners” or some nonsense like that.

January 23rd, 2012 at 10:55 PM
SRORD, that’s what I’m worried about. I HATE the new Marlins uniforms. I can’t imagine how angry I’d be if something like that would be inflicted on my beloved Astros. And he shouldn’t change the name. The Astros played in two of the most epic playoff games of the 80s (1980 against the Phillies and 1986 against the Mets), Biggio and Bagwell and Nolan Ryan played as Astros. They went to the World Series as the Astros. I don’t want to move away from that history.
If it was up to me, they’d give a modern update to these or these. That would be outstanding.

January 23rd, 2012 at 10:57 PM
Bruins – including Julien – maintained, even after the video, that he was merely defending himself, that Salo was going to run him over (which is funny, because Salo’s never run anyone over!). Even after the video laid out the scenario, they continued to defend it and said the NHL was wrong. That was disappointing.
No doubt he’s a good player, but he crosses the line far too much for my liking. Not to draw a direct comparison, but kind of reminds me of Cooke. Keep pushing it and then it goes really wrong.
January 23rd, 2012 at 10:58 PM
Bring back the Colt .45s!
Crane actually mentioned the Colt .45s by name in his press conference, almost like he was expressing a preference. I don’t know how I’d feel if they were to switch back to being the .45s. It’s a cool name to be sure, but there’s all the history I referred to associated with ‘Astros’ and in this day of political correctness, it was in the last 15 years that the Washington Bullets became the Wizards, I can’t imagine people being ok with a team being renamed for a gun.

Back in the day, when you had Cesar Cedeno patrolling center field. The “Toy Cannon”, Jimmy Wynn hitting homers. Roger Metzger pickin’ it at shortstop. Larry Dierker on the mound. Those were good players in those unis.
There was a permanently marked seat way up in the Rainbow section of the Astrodome (the highest seat section in the stadium) which marked where Jimmy Wynn hit the longest home run in Astrodome history. I used to find that seat with binoculars every game and be blown away by how far away it was from home plate.

Now those are the Grizzlies I remember from their days here. Next you’ll say that Big Country’s coming back.

Typical team spin. No different than the Sabres claiming Miller had a concussion after Lucic trucked him (even though he played in the next game. Vancouver claimed Salo had a concussion also. What ever came of that? That kind of stuff is all posturing.
Bad comparison, but I get your point. Cooke is a flat out thug. Marchand is young, he has to grow up. And at 5’8 and 180, I don’t think he’s capable doing the damage that Cooke has done.

Salo is still out. Might come back tomorrow (don’t know why, just give him the all star break) but he only started skating a few days ago.
Yes he is. But he’s also been a useful player – he was a serviceable part of the Canucks for a few years, but there’s was always a feeling he would do something stupid. His agitating just got a little too close to the edge.
As for size, yeah that’s a bad comparison. Plus Marchand hasn’t been a head hunter.
I tell you though, the game between the two a few weeks ago was one of the more intense regular season I’ve ever seen. No love lost.
January 23rd, 2012 at 11:12 PM
The Grizzlies were pure comedy for so many years (thanks Stu Jackson and the NBA office), and yet they still did okay attendance wise. My wish is that they continue this tradition for many years…
January 23rd, 2012 at 11:13 PM
Absolutely. That was the most undisciplined the Bruins have played all year (and not by coincidence). I think it’s safe to say that they didn’t particularly care whether or not they won that game. Curious as to your thoughts about Luongo sitting that one out. Do you buy the line of “letting Schneider play in front of his hometown crowd”?
January 23rd, 2012 at 11:13 PM

I was fine with it (though the idea in Boston that he ‘asked out’ was stupid). He’s been rounding into form – he’s saved their ass on a number of occasions since sitting that one out – and there was no reason to have him in there. Plus, Canucks really need to see (and let others see) what they have in Schneider, and letting him play in that kind of pressure – and at home which he earned – was a good test. He’s becoming a 1a right now, which is a nice luxury to have. (kind of like Thomas-Rask).

Like I said, this describes their entire history in Vancouver. Make a little run, then disappear or crash and burn.
Only guy I felt bad for was Abdur-Rahim. He could have been a decent player.

No doubt he’s a legit 1A (just like Rask here, as you mentioned). Again, 100% honest, hard not to think he wanted nothing to do with playing in that building after how badly he played there in the SCF.

Rang up decent numbers for some bad teams in his career. With a better team, he would have gotten more well-deserved attention.
Isn’t he in some team’s front office now? Maybe D-League?

Seeing and hearing him on a daily basis, I think he would have loved it. He is an intensely competitive guy – often to a fault (hence his strange comments with the press) – and I bet he was pretty upset. He was in a no win though, it was still only a regular season game and wouldn’t have changed anything. And if he lost, well he’d hear about it from Vancouver media for the rest of the year. So why bother?

Interesting.
The perception here couldn’t be more different. But therein lies the difference of seeing/hearing a guy on a daily basis versus from 3500 miles away. I was impressed with how he performed for Team Canada in the 2010 Olympics, which is why I was really surprised with how he performed/acted during the Cup Finals. Seemed like two totally different guys.

He played really well here in Vancouver that series- with next to no ‘goal support’ – but again his intensity gets the best of him, and I think a whole playoffs of that (beginning with an even worse rival for him – the Hawks) it physically wore him out by the end. That’s why they are so set on having Schneider around. As for his comments, that whole “pumping tires” thing was one of the most overblown parts of the final. He was talking purely about technique when he mentioned “he would have had it,” but it came out so wrong it was perfect fodder. Then he let his emotions (again) get the best of him and made it worse. Said this summer he regretted how he said it immediately.

For the record, I have no problem with him saying he would have made that save. Truth be told, he probably would have. He and Thomas play completely different styles. The “pumping tires” thing seemed pretty childish. At the end of the day, it’s a competition. Compete and beat the guy you’re playing against. The idea of all of this mutual respect has gone a little overboard, IMO.
And managing your emotions is a big part of it. That stuff will either make you or break you depending on how you handle it.

This was entirely his point, and yes he should have ended it there. It’s no surprise he’s been better at keeping things in check this year (think he’s been getting some coaching) with comments. I think he’s just awkward with the press, and is not entirely keen on the attention.
and I agree completely with the emotions thing. It’s something that he’s got to be better at.

Man, I previously was a huge fan of Tim Thomas but now he just looks like a jerk. The rest of your team goes but you are too pissy about politics to show up and shake the president’s hand. It’s not like having your team visit the White House is going to help Obama’s reelection chances so what’s the problem?
/Bruins’ fan, btw

I’m a Bruins fan also (and slightly right of center, perhaps surprisingly) but I also think it’s in poor taste.

Tim Thomas is boycotting Lays Potato Chips due to their draconian insistence that “you can’t eat just one”….
January 24th, 2012 at 9:31 AM
Tim Thomas has requested not to play in any games broadcast on NBC, due to their “must-see-TV” law that infringes on our right to NOT see.

What a tool.

The Supremes or Diana Ross and the Supremes? The Boston Bruins or Tim Thomas and the Boston Bruins? Thomas is an idiot and he used to be a guy I liked. I’ll smile when he loses his job pretty soon to Tukka Rask.
