The media is so eager to bury him they’re making up stories. Great work.
Just another reason why Twitter needs aborted.

Gricar’s Revenge is killing Paterno and then bringing him back over and over again

If the movies had the Halloween theme music, I would watch. A delightful romp!
January 21st, 2012 at 9:56 PM
CBS “broke” it and then the story circulated around Twitter.
January 21st, 2012 at 10:01 PM
Onward State reported it. CBS’ college football blog had a pre-written obit and was first to get the report up.
January 21st, 2012 at 10:02 PM
Actually it was a student news site that CBS purloined the information from, with no attribution.
Whoops.
RIP to the student site that started the chain reaction.

I saw a tweet from TBL with a link to an obit by one @TYDuffy moments after the news first broke. Of course, that TBL post and tweet has miraculously disappeared.

I just hate self-righteous Penn Schtate fan. I wish the media and public would treat Michael Jackson the same way they treat the Catholic Church and Joe Paterno.

The media is looking to bury Paterno twice in a few months
January 21st, 2012 at 11:36 PM
I just hate self-righteous Penn Schtate fan. I wish the media and public would treat Michael Jackson the same way they treat the Catholic Church and Joe Paterno.
And I agree with that. Can’t stand self-righteous fans of any type. But the vitriol that has been poured forth on a man who committed one major sin of omission after decades of service and good deeds is just disgusting. The bile should be saved for Sandusky when he hangs himself in his jail cell after he’s convicted.
January 21st, 2012 at 11:39 PM
Yeah the media didn’t make a big deal out of Michael Jackson’s trials or anything.
So who is President in the alternate universe you live in?
January 21st, 2012 at 11:49 PM
And I’m also pretty sure that the Catholic Church has taken a pretty vivid beating from many quarters of the media due to its response, or lack thereof, to the various abuse scandals which have taken place. But the hysteria of people like the guy in the earlier post who said he thought Paterno should be cuffed in the coffin is ludicrous.

ms ~ as Amechi said, “You can’t be a part-time man of principle.” Perhaps JoePa shouldn’t be cuffed, but his silence when he first was notified about Sandusky illustrates plenty. And should result in him vacating his moral high ground.

And I don’t deny that. But I think we’re forgetting that whereas Paterno was guilty of a sin of omission, Sandusky as guilty of the mighty sign of commission. Let’s not conflate the two. Sandusky is the one who deserves anger and hatred. Paterno deserves to have the discussion of his legacy discussed equally.
January 22nd, 2012 at 12:10 AM
Joepa likely did a lot of good with kids and community, but he turned his eyes away from a disgusting act committed by a close friend. He knew for a long time, and failed to do anything substantial. The venom is mitigated.
January 22nd, 2012 at 12:19 AM
Agreed ms. The sins are nowhere near equal. Sandusky deserves something beyond words for what he did. Paterno deserves a bit more though than merely a discussion of his legacy. Perhaps we remember him as one of the greatest coaches, but the facade of principle and morality? He didn’t commit the crimes, but did he allow them to continue by protecting his friend and not reporting them when he was notified? It’s all a fucked-up mess, and JoePa dying would be…convenient at this point. Sadly.
January 22nd, 2012 at 12:23 AM

I think that’s perfectly reasonable. That was, however, not the tone adapted by a number of commenters earlier when they thought Paterno had just died. They were ready to stand over his corpse casting aspersions. And I simply cannot comprehend that level of self-righteousness.
January 22nd, 2012 at 12:25 AM
ms, jack off, thanks for guiding us.
truth is, what we are discussing is no different than when he was ‘fired’. whether he dies tonight or tomorrow or a month from now.
it’s not like he’s redeemed himself since then, or won another game. if anything with his WaPo interview he’d deepended the feeling that he should not have been in charge over the past 5-10 years.
whatever you thought of him two months ago should be the same today
January 22nd, 2012 at 12:26 AM
And I simply cannot comprehend that level of self-righteousness.

Yes I am. And?
January 22nd, 2012 at 12:29 AM
how are you not being self righteous with your comments? you are pretty clearly criticizing those folks for their comments, the implication being that your method of clear-headed thinking on JoPa is the better way
January 22nd, 2012 at 12:29 AM

Agreed. We’re square…such an unbelievably fucked-up story, that went on for years/decades, people feel vindicated I suppose pissing on his grave. It accomplishes nothing in the end.
On a lighter, more pleasant note, should you ever find yourself in Santa Barbara and enjoy sushi, Arigato. Goddamn, if I could afford it, I’d be there every night.
January 22nd, 2012 at 12:30 AM
but stop the bus, to you what separates sushi places? i’m a novice, so to me, raw is raw

Vezina – I think the WWF/WWE/fake wrasslin’ blog is screaming for you right now…more your intellectual speed apparently.
January 22nd, 2012 at 12:34 AM
how are you not being self righteous with your comments? you are pretty clearly criticizing those folks for their comments, the implication being that your method of clear-headed thinking on JoPa is the better way
Yes I think it is. That doesn’t make me self-righteous, that makes me right (at least in my own personal estimation). What is the purpose of debate if it is not to presume that my view first differs from another person’s and that I should then go about trying to show that their view is incorrect.
I think it is fairly clear that people were and are passing moral judgments over someone and something with which they have no direct involvement. They have ensconced themselves in the high throne reserved for internet commenting and stare down at all others with their lofty point of view. Why, if I disagree with their misguided moralizing, should I ignore that and not attempt to poke holes in it?
January 22nd, 2012 at 12:37 AM
my final thought: i’d side with the moderate tone–cynical, suspicious of the cloistered town and idolatry of paterno, open to evidence of his good deeds–over outrage, mainly because while neither stance serves a purpose, the outrage comes off as fake, unless you were personally affected.
happy nfl championship day tomorrow folks
January 22nd, 2012 at 12:37 AM

you’re not seriously questioning my brain’s 40 time when you can’t comprehend what i typed. i said i was a sushi novice, and gave evidence that i needed your opinion because you are not a novice
January 22nd, 2012 at 12:41 AM
What is the purpose of debate if it is not to presume that my view first differs from another person’s and that I should then go about trying to show that their view is incorrect.
that’s not a debate. it’s a preference for tone. you can provide evidence that it’s better to temper the outrage?
January 22nd, 2012 at 12:43 AM

Is their tone not informed by the feelings on the subject? If so, then saying that I’m objecting solely to their tone is disingenuous. People are not moralizing and casting judgment for shits and grins. They feel confident in making that judgment. They feel confident in the superiority of their position.
January 22nd, 2012 at 12:44 AM

January 22nd, 2012 at 12:44 AM
stop the bus…don’t run now. you’ve been caught comprehending badly, so why don’t you just answer my original question about sushi and we’ll forget the rest
what makes one sushi better than another, enough so you;d want to have it at one place every day?

Wondered for about 2 minutes who Ms. Jack Off was.
I wouldn’t mind if that was my lady’s name this evening.
January 22nd, 2012 at 12:47 AM
Vezina – Apologies. Raw fish -and cooked in some dishes/rolls – can be done so creatively and different, you’d be surprised. Arigato is amazing in this regard, and their fish is absurdly fresh, something that’s not a given with all sushi joints. Speaking of which, I shall go smoke a aforementioned j right now. Nothing gained in being an internet dick. So stop it! (talking with myself)
January 22nd, 2012 at 12:47 AM

here? you’re giving a lot of credit to a demographic heavily skewed to the 20-30 crowd, many of whom are still shooting first and asking questions later
anyway, i think you read that i favor your tone over the other type. i just don’t see how evidence can support either, which is what i thought happened in a debate….evidence presented to support a position
January 22nd, 2012 at 12:51 AM
here? you’re giving a lot of credit to a demographic heavily skewed to the 20-30 crowd, many of whom are still shooting first and asking questions later
Fair point. I think I do give credit, more than is probably deserved sometimes, to commenters as a whole on here. There are plenty of intelligent people who comment here, moreso than I can say for most blogs in existence, but I cannot stand it when people seek to insert their morals and position over reason and logic and reasonable discourse. I have no time for that.
January 22nd, 2012 at 12:51 AM
bus, the wife got me into sushi, i never wanted to try it because it didn’t sound appetizing or filling and i wanted to spend eating-out money in other ways. i know better now.
you can get full, i love the seaweed salad, plum wine, the firmer fishes, and the octopus/squid. squeamish on roe tho
anyway, thanks for the explanation
January 22nd, 2012 at 12:53 AM

undoubtedly. often it make sme think intellectually i wasted my 20s. i’m imporessed by knowledge, awareness, caring and the kind of humor that can only come from intelligence

Rule one about sushi, Vez: sushi isn’t implying ‘raw fish’, it’s just talking about the rice, which is steamed and with some vinegar. Novices have to graduate to sashimi (the raw fish).
And as far as differentiating the good from the bad, all about quality and freshness, like Stop the Bus said.
