The Credit Joe Flacco Deserves
Joe Flacco knows that he won’t get the credit he properly deserves. Last week, he said, “I’m sure if we win I’ll have nothing to do with why we won, according to you guys.” Then, he went out and forced 4 turnovers and implanted himself into Jacoby Jones’ brain, and still people don’t give Flacco the credit he deserves. Except, we hear constantly about Flacco’s postseason record (5-3!), road wins, and the fact that he has more wins than any other quarterback in his first four seasons.
Earlier this week, Ravens’ safety Ed Reed joined the chorus, going on Sirius XM Radio with Adam Schein and saying that Flacco “looked rattled”, held the ball too long at times, and “didn’t look like he had a hold of the offense.”
Ouch.
So let’s take a quick look at the credit that Joe Flacco deserves for that 5-3 Ravens record in games he has started in the postseason (seven on the road). To do this, I took all postseason games in the last 20 years, and found the 20 most similar games to Joe Flacco’s passer rating for each Ravens playoff game, and looked at the winning percentage in those games. It’s not perfect by any means, but it gives us a sense of how frequently teams win when they have offensive passing performances like the Ravens, with the differences more attributable to other things–defense, defensive turnovers, special teams plays, and rushing performance.
Let’s go down the blow by blow for the eight postseason games.
GAME ONE- 59.1 Passer Rating, 9 of 23, 135 yards, 0 TD, 0 INT [Baltimore at Miami, Jan. 4, 2009].
This game was tied at 3-3 when Ed Reed returned an interception 64 yards for a touchdown. Miami turned the ball over 5 times. Flacco completed less than half his passes, for less than 6 yards a pass, but at least had no interceptions. Playoff Record for Teams with Similar Passer Rating: 7-14 (33.3% win).
GAME TWO- 89.4 Passer Rating, 11 of 22, 161 yards, 1 TD, 0 INT [Baltimore at Tennessee, Jan. 10, 2009]
Baltimore only managed 9 first downs in this game, and were out gained by 180 yards, but won the turnover battle 3-0. Flacco did lead a field goal drive in the final minutes after the offense had done nothing all day, and Matt Stover made a 43-yarder to win it 13-10. Playoff Record for Teams with Similar Passer Rating: 9-11 (45.0% win).
GAME THREE- 18.2 Passer Rating, 13 of 30, 141 yards, 0 TD, 3 INT [Baltimore at Pittsburgh, Jan. 18, 2009].
In a defensive showdown, Flacco had three interceptions, including the decisive one that was returned for a touchdown by Troy Polamalu in the fourth quarter to extend the lead to 23-14. Playoff Record for Teams with Similar Passer Rating: 2-18 (10.0% win).
GAME FOUR- 10.0 Passer Rating, 4 of 10, 34 yards, 0 TD, 1 INT [Baltimore at New England, Jan. 10, 2010].
If you wanted Exhibit 1 in the Playoff Wins category, this game is it, the lowest rated game for a winning quarterback in a playoff game ever. Baltimore jumped on New England with a long Ray Rice touchdown early, then relied on four New England turnovers and 234 rushing yards to roll to victory. Playoff Record for Teams with Similar Passer Rating: 2-18 (10.0% win).
GAME FIVE- 48.4 Passer Rating, 20 of 35, 189 yards, 0 TD, 2 INT [Baltimore at Indianapolis, Jan. 16, 2010].
The Colts pulled away steadily in this game for a comfortable 20-3 win. Baltimore committed four turnovers, including two Flacco interceptions, as Flacco had what has been his second highest yardage total in a playoff game (though he averaged only 5.4 yards per attempt). Playoff Record for Teams with Similar Passer Rating: 2-18 (10.0% win).
GAME SIX- 115.4 Passer Rating, 25 of 34, 265 yards, 2 TD, 0 INT [Baltimore at Kansas City, Jan. 9, 2011].
Easily Flacco’s best postseason performance. The Ravens defense also contributed 5 takeaways, and the Ravens rolled to a 30-7 win, while out gaining Kansas City 390 to 161. Playoff Record for Teams with Similar Passer Rating: 16-4 (80.0% win).
GAME SEVEN- 61.1 Passer Rating, 16 of 30, 125 yards, 1 TD, 1 INT [Baltimore at Pittsburgh, Jan. 15, 2011].
Baltimore got out to a 21-7 halftime lead on the strength of a Cory Redding fumble return touchdown, and a fumble recovery by Ed Reed at the Pittsburgh 16, setting Baltimore up with a short field. In the second half, though, Flacco could do nothing to build on the lead, as Baltimore had only 3 second half 1st downs. Playoff Record for Teams with Similar Passer Rating: 6-14 (30.0% win).
GAME EIGHT- 97.1 Passer Rating, 14 of 27, 176 yards, 2 TD, 0 INT [Houston at Baltimore, Jan. 15, 2012]. Last Sunday, and this was, by passer rating (which does not account for the holding the ball on sacks) his second-best post-season performance. Let that sink in. The passer rating is boosted by the high touchdown rate, which resulted from short fields after turnovers. Playoff Record for Teams with Similar Passer Rating: 12-8 (60.0% win).
SUMMARY
The Kansas City game was the only one where a performance like Flacco’s resulted in a win a high percentage of time, and the Houston game was the only other one where teams won more often than they lost. Flacco has completed 53% of his passes for 5.8 yards per attempt in the postseason, while throwing 6 touchdowns and 7 interceptions. In the regular season, yes, Joe Flacco has been inconsistent, but once you get outside the top 10 in the league, that’s what you get. He’s been a perfectly average NFL starter, playing with a top defense, and the Ravens have made the playoffs every season.
In the half a season of postseason games, though, he’s been Kyle Boller (56.7%, 5.9 YPA, 48 TD to 54 INT for career), yet he whines about not getting credit? Based on just his play, he should have won a subpar 34.8% of his playoff games, not 5 of 8.
Why are the Ravens 5 for 8 in the postseason in the last four years? It took a lot of advanced analysis, but it is almost entirely Ed Reed’s side of the ball (10.2 points allowed in the five wins) with a side of rushing game in the New England win. More specifically, it is an insane turnover rate on defense. Baltimore has averaged 2 turnovers per playoff game on offense, hardly a great mark. On defense, though, they have forced 25 turnovers in the 8 playoff games.
Let’s put that in some perspective, no defense has forced 50 turnovers over a full season in the last decade. The last team to average as many turnovers per game in a regular season, as Baltimore has in Flacco’s 8 playoff starts, is Buddy Ryan’s Eagles in 1989.
If Flacco wants more credit, then he needs to go out and actually play well enough to get it. He has his opportunity on Sunday against a suspect defense, and I’m not sure he can rely on throwing for just 34 yards this time in New England.

Success-wise, Joe Flacco’s career arc is right on schedule with Donovan McNabb’s.
/no idea what that means
January 20th, 2012 at 1:46 PM
Heh. Sounds like another QB in the AFC…
January 20th, 2012 at 1:47 PM
What’s worse – his whining or that facial hair?
January 20th, 2012 at 1:48 PM
that’s not necessarily fair since batimore didn’t need him at all to win that game. yes, he doesn’t deserve credit for the win, but he doesn’t deserve to get slammed either since NE couldn’t stop them at all on the ground.
he simply didn’t get an opportunity and while i agree with the text portion of that, i don’t think you can really apply it to other playoff teams that had a similar QB performance.
January 20th, 2012 at 1:48 PM
His comments were more along the lines of Flacco never being credited for his performances, mostly in the regular season. He’s viewed as a game manager at best, a liability at worst, when in fact he’s been quite good over the course of his career. Shit, this year he’s 7-0 against playoff teams with a 97 rating, 10 TDs, and 2 INTs.
Roethlisberger is viewed as a legend even though he had a 36 rating in the Super Bowl, but Flacco sucks. His point is more that these articles weren’t written about Ben.
January 20th, 2012 at 1:48 PM
But how does the fu-manchu mustache affect his chances? What about QBs who skateboard before the game?
He deserves near zero credit for anything Baltimore does. Flaccos throws 3 passes: checkdown to RB, crossing pattern to TE, and deep fly up the right sideline.
/still pissed that despite this predictability PIT couldn’t stop him in Week 9
January 20th, 2012 at 1:49 PM
stop…big ben is a trillion times better than flolacco.
January 20th, 2012 at 1:50 PM
Where is the credit Tim Tebow deserves?
January 20th, 2012 at 1:50 PM
I wish Flacco would just go away. Maybe Wilfork can eat him.

im not sure it’s “quite good” but he sure as hell looks like an elite QB whenever he faces the fucking browns.

McTibble is trolling Lisk now with the QB wins stat. Sweet.
January 20th, 2012 at 1:52 PM
I really believe this is gonna come down to Flacco. I believe the Pats defense with Spikes in there is going to shut the run down. He’s gonna have to pass for 250+.
January 20th, 2012 at 1:53 PM
oy vey.
January 20th, 2012 at 1:53 PM
Can we make a policy where we judge QB’s NOT by wins? Otherwise we just keep giving Eli Superbowl MVP for being dragged to a SB win despite his best efforts to throw it away.
January 20th, 2012 at 1:53 PM
pass for 250+ eh?
/dumpoff to rice

January 20th, 2012 at 1:53 PM
i’d be concerned if the QB on my team was whining openly about not getting any credit for a win or what he’s done.
It’s not about fucking individual credit, it’s about winning the game. do what you have to do and don’t worry about who the media gives credit to.
part of me really hopes he tries too hard and forces passes where he shouldn’t this week in an effort to get credit for a win, b/c you know it’s got to be in the back of his mind.
/he’s a whiny little bitch.
January 20th, 2012 at 1:54 PM
Take a look at the first 3 games Ben played that postseason. He sucked in the Super Bowl, yes, but Flacco has yet to play one game like those three nonetheless 3 consecutively. Flacco doesn’t belong in the same breath as Ben when it comes to postseason play.
January 20th, 2012 at 1:54 PM
or regular season play, for that matter.
January 20th, 2012 at 1:55 PM
I was thinking today, since McCourty plays safety in sub-packages anyway, could you just spy Ray Rice with him up near the line of scrimmage the whole game. If it’s gonna be Flacco who beats you, why not take away Rice completely in the passing game and see if Flacco can complete passes downfield, instead of repeated checkdowns.

The Credit Joe Flacco Deserves
Don’t know why, but that title made me think of this:
“That Santiago’s death, while tragic, probably saved lives. And my existence, while grotesque and incomprehensible to you, saves lives. You don’t want the truth because deep down in places you don’t talk about at parties, you want me on that wall, you need me on that wall. We use words like honor, code, loyalty. We use these words as the backbone of a life spent defending something. You use them as a punchline. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the blanket of the very freedom that I provide, and then questions the manner in which I provide it. I would rather you just said thank you, and went on your way, Otherwise, I suggest you pick up a weapon, and stand a post. Either way, I don’t give a damn what you think you are entitled to.”
January 20th, 2012 at 1:55 PM
It would be great if Edelman picked off Flacco. I also hope Baltimore enjoyed that one big Lee Evans catch last weekend. That’s all you’ll get out of him until next season.
/disappearing act

What if Joe Flacco was white?
January 20th, 2012 at 1:55 PM

If there was a movie with Joe Flacco in it you would instantly know he is the killer/serial rapist/werewolf/faggy vampire/child pornographer.
January 20th, 2012 at 1:56 PM
as much as i hate to say it, Big Ben redeemed his 1st super bowl performance in his next two (dry heaves), even though the last one was a loss.
January 20th, 2012 at 1:56 PM
Plus, if you have to transfer for D I-AA because you can’t beat out Tyler Friggin Palko…
January 20th, 2012 at 1:56 PM
Team sports, and he’s grousing about credit. Teammates don’t usually respond positively to quarterbacks who let their insecurities show in public.
Be the leader, do your job, then credit comes.
January 20th, 2012 at 1:56 PM
Joe Flacco was in the Twilight movies?
January 20th, 2012 at 1:57 PM
Flacco doesn’t throw to WR’s, are you crazy?
January 20th, 2012 at 1:57 PM
whenever you spy a player, you give the offensive guy any leverage. it’s the same concept the pats use in how they use welker against zone coverages. a simple option route out of the backfield, which the majority are these days, would put the spy in concrete shoes.
and if spikes is that spy? HO-LEE SHIT, rice would have 180 yards receiving.

Regular season, yes. Sanchez playoff passer ratings: 139.4 (Win), 60.1 (Win), 93.3 (Loss), 62.4 (Win), 127.3 (Win), 102.2 (Loss)
January 20th, 2012 at 1:58 PM
more importantly, is Flacco gay?
/Bayless’d
January 20th, 2012 at 1:58 PM
Rice is going to get the Marshall Faulk treatment from SB 36. pass rushers will chip him and hit him whenever he’s in the backfield and not running the ball, taking away the quick check down and forcing flacco to keep his eyes up field and buy time for the pass rush to get to him.
January 20th, 2012 at 1:58 PM
Rex Ryan is being grilled on Mike Francesa right now. He’s genuine, passionate, and done well in the interview. I will be rooting for him except when they play the Giants. Good stuff.
January 20th, 2012 at 1:58 PM
I hate Ben, but the 4th quarter of the SB vs the Cards was about as hot as I’ve ever seen a QB, including Brady in his own SB wins.
Not only do the stars align to give NE a reasonable possible path to the Superbowl, they’ve managed to play the Broncos and the whiny Ravens, somehow making random people actually WANT the Patriots to win.
/never thought I’d see the day again
January 20th, 2012 at 1:58 PM
Flacco’s next stop? Canton.
January 20th, 2012 at 1:59 PM
He wasn’t whining. At all. For four years he’s had to endure undeserved criticism from local and national media because he has had a few bad playoff games really, really early in his career. The current NFL mentality is that anyone who doesn’t throw for 5000 yards is a shitty QB. It’s ridiculous.
Wins isnt the be all end all metric of QB success, because the NFL is a team game. But to me, its a more important stat than passing yards.
January 20th, 2012 at 1:59 PM
says who?
/Bayless on Tebow
January 20th, 2012 at 2:00 PM
what about the national media (john clayton) that gave him undeserved praise because he hasn’t had many great games either?
January 20th, 2012 at 2:01 PM
Ha. Dude is stout against the run but man is he slow. I am hoping the Pats take away the checkdowns, it’ll be interesting to see.
I always kind of liked Rex (he respects BB, admires Brady, and hates Mark Sanchez, just like me!). He’s gone a little overboard recently, but I gotta give him props after he punked the Hoodie last year in the playoffs.
January 20th, 2012 at 2:01 PM
He’s done all of that. More wins that any QB in NFL history over his first four years. He does nothing but get shit on.
All you guys acting like Flacco throws checkdowns — do you watch Ravens games? Shit, he should throw to Rice more. They go deep far too often just for the sake of doing so. But that’s what you get when a you employ a barely functioning retard as your OC.
January 20th, 2012 at 2:02 PM
cam cameron isn’t pulling the trigger…and it’d be nice if the ravens could pass protect a little better.
January 20th, 2012 at 2:02 PM
Big difference between not being able to consistently throw a 10+ yard pass and having a 5000 yard season.
January 20th, 2012 at 2:03 PM
Well, he looks much better without the unibrow. #thecreditjoeflaccodeserves
January 20th, 2012 at 2:03 PM
Joe Flacco photographs naked children in black and white 21mm ultra wide angle and I just can’t abide by that.
January 20th, 2012 at 2:03 PM
gotta give him props
And he likes feet
January 20th, 2012 at 2:03 PM
And Trent Dilfer won a SB with a similar defense. So unless you are going to say Dilfer > Flacco (he is), then let’s settle down on the wins. You are basically McTibble now… and he’s not defending Flacco because he thinks Flacco is any good, he just wants to push the Sanchez/wins agenda.
January 20th, 2012 at 2:03 PM
very true, in the case of ray rice you have to actively take him out of the play as aggressively and as quick as possible, spying will let him get his feet under him and pick up momentum to break tackles.
i could see a rotating coverage on rice where the presnap read is disguising who would really be coming at him in the backfield, forcing a motion into coverage, etc.
January 20th, 2012 at 2:04 PM
I dunno… I was watching some barely-functional QB against the Pats last week, was that Flacco?
January 20th, 2012 at 2:04 PM
He’s had more great games than shitty ones. And for every one guy who may overpraise him there are 100 who think he sucks.
Frankly, I’m not too concerned with who thinks he’s good. Flacco almost singlehandedly won both Pittsburgh games, the first Houston game, and the Niners game. If he keeps getting results, great.
January 20th, 2012 at 2:05 PM
Joe Flacco’s ballwashing by the media is totally uncalled for. He’s not even a top 15 QB and everyone treats him on the Brady-Brees-Rodgers-Peyton level. He has awful accuracy and has no sembalance of being a master of the intermediate passing game. In short, fuck him and can’t wait for Wilfork to pancake him.
January 20th, 2012 at 2:05 PM
Rice is going to get the Marshall Faulk treatment from SB 36. pass rushers will chip him and hit him whenever he’s in the backfield and not running the ball, taking away the quick check down and forcing flacco to keep his eyes up field and buy time for the pass rush to get to him.
That sounds about right, but the Ravens should be smart enough to adjust and beef up the blocking. We know the NE secondary is for shit, and the LBs can be exploited in a zone.
January 20th, 2012 at 2:06 PM
Joe Flacco is Mark Sanchez, only a little less successful in the playoffs.
January 20th, 2012 at 2:08 PM
Let’s settle down here. The 2011 Ravens defense is in no way comparable to the 2000 Ravens defense (except that, uh, they’re both defenses). The 2000 team allowed 10 freakin ppg. This version allows double that.
Worse, this team borders on terrible if they can’t get a pass rush (zero combined sacks in the four losses this year), which worries me.
January 20th, 2012 at 2:08 PM
my point is that he’s publicly griping about getting individual credit for what he’s done when he should not even be paying attention to, or having that line of thinking, that he’s more worried about personal credit rather than team credit/success.
January 20th, 2012 at 2:08 PM
I watch a shit load because they are my sworn enemy, and their opportunistic defense/Ray Rice wins probably 90% of their games. Sadly that other 10% had to happen on that SNF this year. Flacco doesn’t have the ability to torch a defense like the great QBs can.
January 20th, 2012 at 2:08 PM
so what baseline of credit does he deserve? rivers didn’t get a whole bunch of credit this year, and a good bit of criticism, and yet threw for almost 1k more yards in only 40 more attempts. 7 more TD’s, and while he had more turnovers than flacco, he also produced on a much greater level.
so if rivers isn’t getting lauded, why would flacco? i mean, what credit does a QB who doesn’t complete 60% of his passes and has a 6.5 ypa really deserve?
January 20th, 2012 at 2:08 PM
He’s had more great games than shitty ones.
Nobody reads the posts.
January 20th, 2012 at 2:09 PM
So everyone in the media thinks Flacco sucks, yet he’s ballwashed. Unreal.
January 20th, 2012 at 2:09 PM
Queefer, I can dig your passion, but let’s look at this. Flacco is one of 32 guys in the world to have this opportunity (NFL starting QB). His head coach trusts him completely, it appears. Rarely do you hear Harbaugh blaming Flacco when the Ravens lose or when Flacco struggles.
I kinda shrug when I hear “QB wins”, since QBs need teammates. Why don’t we track center’s wins or right tackle’s wins? We focus on quarterbacks, and part of us as fans want QBs to hang in there when times get tough. As fans, we get uncomfortable when a QB expresses his inner feelings. We need him to be stoic, suck it up, and drive on.
Nah, I haven’t watched every Ravens’ game (but I did watch Chargers vs Ravens – no insult intended, just stating fact). There are games where Flacco looks good under center. Other games, it looks like he is indecisive. So are many QBs in the league – just look at team W-L records, and you can probably name the others.
January 20th, 2012 at 2:10 PM
Who’s everyone?
January 20th, 2012 at 2:10 PM
It’s not a good look to bitch about how you don’t get credit for team success when you don’t have otherworldly statistics to back up your assessment of your own individual performance.
Just play, Bert. Just worry about that.
January 20th, 2012 at 2:10 PM
no, we’re saying he’s mediocre and don’t want to hear him beg for credit.
January 20th, 2012 at 2:11 PM
Queefer
Addressing someone with this — then going on to a lucid, well thought out point is why I love TBL.
January 20th, 2012 at 2:12 PM
More like 13 if you don’t count the pick-6′s and fumbles from Flacco.
January 20th, 2012 at 2:13 PM
McTibble already does. That’s why Sanchez sucked most of the year.
January 20th, 2012 at 2:13 PM
I strongly disagree there because I’ve seen him do it multiple times(as have you, apparently). But he’s not great (i.e. first tier).
His biggest problem is his inconsistency. You never know which Flacco is going to show up. He had to face 12 top-10 defenses this year, which is fucking absurd and contributed to his stat dropoff and inconsistency, without question. His wideouts drop a ton of balls, too. But it doesn’t completely let him off the hook, either. In order to take that next step he needs to become consistent.
January 20th, 2012 at 2:15 PM
here’s the problem with that…every year i say “damn the browns faced so many good defenses…no wonder they suck on offense.”
but it gets to a point where you have to ask yourself, “are those defense’s rankings inflated by getting to face flolacco?” the clear answer here is…perhaps.
good QB’s tend to be consistently good unless they’re outliers like roeth or vick or tebow.
January 20th, 2012 at 2:16 PM
You never know which Flacco is going to show up
Which is my point, and I think similar to most of the posters here. It just sounds unseemly to actively seek out credit.
January 20th, 2012 at 2:16 PM
yeah, it will be interesting. If the Pats improvement from Denver game was for real I think the Ravens offensive line will have a lot of trouble keeping protection up and off of Ray Rice/Flacco.
there will be a lot of screens to take the aggression off.
as a pats fan I’m more worried about a mistake free game from Brady to get to an early and sustained lead.
January 20th, 2012 at 2:18 PM
you know who deserves some credit for the ravens being awesome? haloti ngata…he gets some already, but he deserves more.
January 20th, 2012 at 2:18 PM
At first I was rooting for a meteor, but go Patriots. The Ravens have turned into quite the whiners all year, and that all goes through the head coach. Your in the AFC Championship game. STFU and stop complaining.
January 20th, 2012 at 2:18 PM
this.
jeff george thinks he doesn’t get a fair shake either.
January 20th, 2012 at 2:19 PM
SROD — agree with your entire post. We’re conditioned to look at QBs as the primary driver of success regardless of whether or not its the best metric. Some QBs are more instrumental in the success of their team than others.
Flacco isn’t great and he doesnt suck. He’s above average for the league. I dont even think he thinks he’s elite. He’s just getting a little tired of getting shit on while being successful.
January 20th, 2012 at 2:19 PM
lets just re-route that meteor art modell’s way.
/the ravens should never exist in the first place
January 20th, 2012 at 2:20 PM
that’s true.
there’s another guy. a safety, Eric Reeds, something like that. He’s good, too… or so i hear.

There were 12 defenses in the Top 10?
Assuming you meant he had to face Top 10 defenses 12 times, that would include PIT, CIN and CLE who had the benefit of feasting on the NFC West and AFC South poo-poo platter 8 games each this year.
January 20th, 2012 at 2:20 PM
Is there a fan base that has ever (last 20 years) been more notoriously irrationally supportive of a player on their team than Flacco/Ravens fans. Baltimore fans are pretty hardcore on the Ravens anyway, but I don’t remember any mediocre player being propped up consistently by their fans to the degree Flacco is.
/unless you are counting Cal Ripken Jr.
//but he’s more propped up by a cock
January 20th, 2012 at 2:21 PM
What on earth are you talking about? Steeler fans calling the Ravens whiners? I still see facebook posts from Pitt fans bitching that the Tebow pass wasn’t an illegal formation.
January 20th, 2012 at 2:21 PM
John Harbaugh is trying to set the record for most Gatorade baths in one season. From the way they celebrate, you’d have thought they won the SB multiple times this year.
January 20th, 2012 at 2:21 PM
Something I can 100% agree with you on spencer.
January 20th, 2012 at 2:22 PM
Tony Banks and Trent Dilfer combined had 19 picks and 10 lost fumbles in 2000. Flacco has 12 picks and 6 lost fumbles.
January 20th, 2012 at 2:22 PM
im sure there are a multitude of other occupations he could find that keep him out of the spotlight and immune to criticism. he chose to play football, and QB for that matter, and with that comes opening yourself to a world of criticism normal people wouldn’t be able to handle. comes with the territory.
you know when you’re a 1st round QB on a playoff caliber team that being mediocre is a small notch above pure failure.
January 20th, 2012 at 2:22 PM
Not to mention beating the Steelers 2x and winning the Superbowl would mean that 20,000 fans are coming to Heinz next year saying how they have the Steelers’ number, and Pittsburgh is the little brother, etc now…
/welcome aboard Mantis, sign in to the right, and pick up your team-issued hoodie on the left
January 20th, 2012 at 2:23 PM
i can’t believe how wrong i was on ed reed…i thought this would be his sad swan song. figured injuries and age would catch up and he sounded bored with the NFL grind at the beginning of the season.
ed reed is the fucking man.
January 20th, 2012 at 2:23 PM
Dude… shhh… let me troll Baltimore for a while. I don’t even really hate them, but they are just so cute when they get all red-faced and stammery
January 20th, 2012 at 2:24 PM
/fondly remembers eric mangini’s gatorade bath after beating the patriots
//shakes fist at gob for geographically cursing me when it comes to sports
January 20th, 2012 at 2:24 PM
A lot of Baltimore fans think Flacco sucks. I’d say its about 60/40 positive.
Again, we see all the games. The national perception is that Ray Rice runs the ball 30 times a game and the defense is just dominant. That’s far from the case. Flacco has had to win big games this year and delivered.
Pitt has the same problem. National fans think the Steelers are a ground and pound team.
January 20th, 2012 at 2:25 PM
Never imagined I would be rooting so hard for Brady, but Baltimore is such a collection of bitches starting with their coach. This is a coach that complained about the song playing at Heinz before Flacco’s game winning drive. The Harbaughs are such assholes.
Pittsburgh played basically the same schedule with a far worse O-line. Piss-poor excuse for Flacco’s regression.
January 20th, 2012 at 2:26 PM
Fascinating. Because I actually live here, and have not heard one person complain about it once. Maybe all the dumbass fans are the ones who have never lived here.
January 20th, 2012 at 2:27 PM
Yeah, this isn’t something I can give fucks about. Celebrate, don’t celebrate, whatever. They’re in the AFC title game. It seems to be working.
Not really sure what the Dilfer/Banks/Flacco point is. Difler/Banks turned the ball over 11 more times than Flacco, and the 2000 defense was still much better. So, I agree?
January 20th, 2012 at 2:27 PM
Ah, why didn’t you say so? Carry on.
January 20th, 2012 at 2:27 PM
Well… if it’s on facebook!
January 20th, 2012 at 2:28 PM
How about Joe Flacco as a muppet?
January 20th, 2012 at 2:29 PM
No Sam the Eagle?
January 20th, 2012 at 2:30 PM
this always makes me lol.
January 20th, 2012 at 2:30 PM
I saw Flacco play twice this year. Once he ate up Pittsburgh on the road in the 4th quarter, making great throws that were dropped, and winning anyway. Other time he shit the bed in Tennessee, against an awful team that never should have been 9-7 and gave up 53 yards to Chris Johnson. I think that basically sums up Flacco.
January 20th, 2012 at 2:31 PM
Here’s what the Jets sucking has done to my. I love the shit out of the Ravens, but I want the Pats to win so they can lose to the Giants in the SB. Again. Why, because I just hate the Pats so much. I fucking hate football.
January 20th, 2012 at 2:31 PM
to be fair, the defense is pretty fucking good and rice is used on 40% of baltimore’s offensive snaps.
January 20th, 2012 at 2:31 PM
First off, Pitt got the NE secondary and Bmore got the Jets. Little bit different.
Roethlisberger regressed, too. Using 2009 as a comparison (full season), he’s down 10 points in QB rating, 3 pts in completion percentage, and about 20 yards less per game.
January 20th, 2012 at 2:32 PM
I AM, ahem…., Joe Flacco
January 20th, 2012 at 2:33 PM
This is basically why I’m “rooting” for the Patriots this weekened, I don’t even want the Ravens to get a shot at getting another ring. As much as I dislike the Patriots, I HATE the Ravens.
/Fuck Baltimore
January 20th, 2012 at 2:34 PM
All of this is true. Rice should be used on 75 percent of their snaps, though. I want to drive to Cam Cameron’s house and murder his dog when I see Ricky Williams on the field on third down. Even if you’re not going to use Rice, HAVE HIM ON THE FUCKING FIELD SO THE DEFENSE HAS TO ACCOUNT FOR HIM!
/where’s the Tylenol?

January 20th, 2012 at 2:36 PM
1. Cam Cameron is his offensive coordinator.
2. He’s been one game away from the Super Bowl more than once.
/yeah, he’s good
January 20th, 2012 at 2:36 PM
Thats the key metric, right der
January 20th, 2012 at 2:37 PM
What kind of world do we live in when people are letting one Flacco soundbite turn them into mother fucking Patriots fans?
This is funny because regular fans aren’t saying anything about it, yet Merrill Hoge complained on both Twitter and SportsCenter. Fuck him.
January 20th, 2012 at 2:37 PM
Spoiler: he will
January 20th, 2012 at 2:37 PM
Ummm…the Jets were 8-8 and missed the playoffs. Worst safeties in football. The have exactly ONE decent player in their secondary.
Ben played last quarter of season on 1 leg. But if you want to compare Ben to Flacco, by all means, don’t let me stop you from embarrassing yourself.
January 20th, 2012 at 2:38 PM
I can support this type of comment 100% of the time. But, it needs a little more FUCK MODELL in the middle of it.
January 20th, 2012 at 2:38 PM
forgot to add “painfully” and nobody shows up at his funeral.
January 20th, 2012 at 2:39 PM
he chose to play football, and QB for that matter, and with that comes opening yourself to a world of criticism normal people wouldn’t be able to handle. comes with the territory.
Completely concur. If I had to handle the nitpicking in my career that Flacco takes now, I’d be in a dark room sucking my thumb, listening to Kenny Loggins records. Hats off to him for taking the hits, literally and verbally.
Frustration is normal. Best revenge is to kick ass on Sunday. That shuts up all of us talkers.

/Vernon Davis 8-196-2
//100 of it in the last 3 minutes of the game
January 20th, 2012 at 2:40 PM
If I had my choice b/w losing in SB or losing to the Ravens, I’d always pick SB in a vacuum. The problem is if they lose to the Giants, there will be illogical rhetoric about Eli having Brady’s number, etc etc, and I think I’d have to blow my brains out.
January 20th, 2012 at 2:40 PM
Well, if we are going to play the numbers game. Ben was on pace to beat most of his best stats for the year. Until he had to play on one foot and couldn’t throw for shit the last quarter of the year because of this.
January 20th, 2012 at 2:40 PM
he’s all right, you don’t gotta worry bout him.
January 20th, 2012 at 2:41 PM
Here’s a ‘thetical for ya — say he plays well Sunday but loses the Super Bowl despite have a decent game (200 yards, 2 TD, 1 INT). Does the perception change?
Or, what if he’s average (190 yards, 1 TD, 1 fumble lost) and they win? Does his stock improve because he has a ring (a la Eli) or is he looked at as someone who was carried to the promised land by a talented supporting cast (a la Brad Johnson)?
January 20th, 2012 at 2:41 PM
Oy, Malcolm. Not a great day for one Mr. Jenkins.
January 20th, 2012 at 2:42 PM
And he’s the good one.
January 20th, 2012 at 2:43 PM
I stand corrected. Second worst safeties in football.
January 20th, 2012 at 2:44 PM
I beg to differ
/Vernon Davis 8-196-2
//100 of it in the last 3 minutes of the game

//Drinks some more
January 20th, 2012 at 2:44 PM
Agreed, but he took a beating late. Of course, Vernon was doing his best Kellen Winslow Sr. impersonation in the 4th quarter.
January 20th, 2012 at 2:44 PM
Jets defense is much better than the Pats. We’re not really gonna argue about that, right?
January 20th, 2012 at 2:46 PM
The Pats defense is actually 0-3. They are just lucky Brady had those 13 QB wins to help get them in the playoffs.
January 20th, 2012 at 2:47 PM
He blew the coverage. Harper missed the open field tackle. And I like how Harper tackled Jenkins on the largely-forgotten first quarter touchdown.
January 20th, 2012 at 2:49 PM
Welker and Gronk get no wins? Damn, harsh.
January 20th, 2012 at 2:51 PM
No way dude. It’s all on the QB. Santonio doesn’t get any credit for the four road playoff victories…
/did you hear Sanchez has four road playoff victories?
January 20th, 2012 at 2:51 PM
the expectations raise, but i don’t think the perception does.
i dont think he’d get to eli’s place without some late game heroics and i dont think the supporting cast is as good as tampa’s was…he’d probably get looked at somewhere between mark rypien and phil simms.
January 20th, 2012 at 2:51 PM
Yes they are better. So take that 90 yards per game difference in passing yards given up and use it to excuse Flacco’s regression over the course of a 16 game season.
January 20th, 2012 at 2:52 PM
Queefer, for your first scenario, people may still say “well, he was due for a good game” or “eh, this was the year of high passing yardage”.
For your second, I think he would get some of that credit he craves (RIIIIIIINNGS!) but the media would still ask “can he do it again next year, as the defending champ?”. Winning a title, to me, has to change the way we look at Flacco on some level.
January 20th, 2012 at 2:53 PM
I wonder if he’s been working with the Wonderpets this week. They’re supposed to be quite good at helping young ravens.
January 20th, 2012 at 2:57 PM
I think Flacco is a joke, but it would change the way I look at him if we can win 2 more games. That will impress me. Of course some people on here still rip Ben for the Seattle super bowl despite the fact that he’s won another SB and reached a third. So you never know.
January 20th, 2012 at 2:57 PM
Be at least 300 Clevelanders there “just to make sure.”
January 20th, 2012 at 2:58 PM
Speaking of BAL QB’s, Steelers just signed Troy Smith today.
January 20th, 2012 at 3:00 PM
FWIW, I think the Ravens beat NE and lose to whoever wins the NFC. The Ravens have trouble with teams that completely take away the run, and both those squads can do that. I know they already beat SF but that was at home on a short week and it was close the whole time until Flacco carved them up on one late drive.
January 20th, 2012 at 3:02 PM
Well, Charlie Batch IS 114 years old…..
January 20th, 2012 at 3:08 PM
FWIW, I think the Ravens beat NE and lose to whoever wins the NFC. The Ravens have trouble with teams that completely take away the run, and both those squads can do that
giants are in the bottom half of the league in rush def.
pats and niners roll this weekend.
January 20th, 2012 at 3:13 PM
No way they win, the Ravens can’t even beat a Dead Horse to Death.
January 20th, 2012 at 3:13 PM
New England can take away the one good thing an offense can do because their coach is brilliant like that. But their defense isn’t good enough to totally shut down a team that is decent at doing more than one thing. Flacco is decent, and with his receivers he is good enough to beat that D that is setting up to stop the run.
January 20th, 2012 at 3:17 PM
I think Queefer makes some decent points.
January 20th, 2012 at 3:41 PM
TJ Yates almost beat him
/since we are giving credit to shitty QBs who deserve nothing but a pat on the back for not fucking it up
January 20th, 2012 at 3:43 PM
What I really want to know, and the improtant thing here is, do I lay the 9 pts and take NE.
I got NE winning 31-20. anyone disagree?
January 20th, 2012 at 3:48 PM
I think 9 is strong here. Game may not be close – in either direction. I could see Baltimore’d D and Ray Rice just beating the shit out of the Pats. I could also see Brady going for 250 and 3 TD before half.
/Wouldn’t touch it with a 10 foot pole
January 20th, 2012 at 4:07 PM
So much wrong with this I don’t know where to start. So I won’t.
January 20th, 2012 at 4:20 PM
Flacco will always be the clown who couldn’t even beat out Tyler Palko
Comparing Flacco to Ben is no comparison. Save your numbers, doesn’t pass the eye test
January 20th, 2012 at 4:22 PM
Even Tim Tebow thinks those numbers suck.
January 20th, 2012 at 4:41 PM
Yes, that will undoubtedly be his legacy. I see nothing dumb about that statement.
