Steve Spagnuolo Swaps Places With Gregg Williams, Becomes New Orleans Defensive Coordinator
Steve Spagnuolo, Jeff Fisher, and Gregg Williams played musical chairs this offseason, with Fisher replacing the fired Spagnuolo as head coach in St. Louis, Gregg Williams departing New Orleans and joining Fisher as defensive coordinator, and Spagnuolo going to coach the defense in New Orleans.
Spagnuolo likely made a good impression on Sean Payton with the Rams defensive performance against the Saints this year, one of New Orleans’ three regular season losses. In that game, the Rams sacked Drew Brees a season-high 6 times and held New Orleans under 300 total yards, the only team to do so.
Gregg Williams was also a big hire three years ago, and the defensive turnaround helped take the Saints to the Super Bowl. That revival was largely driven by turnovers, as the Saints never ranked higher than 12th in net yards per pass under Williams. Spagnuolo was in the top 10 in that category in both years as defensive coordinator of the Giants, in 2007 and 2008. His team led the league in sacks during the Super Bowl year, and his schemes contained the Patriots explosive offense. His ability to design defenses to counter some of the best offenses should bode well for the Saints’ pursuit of a New Orleans Super Bowl in 2012.
Spagnuolo may be a great hire, but if they want to turn it around defensively, then they also need to address personnel. Spagnuolo will likely blitz far less than Williams did, but can he get the pressure that he wants with the front four in New Orleans. Cameron Jordan, last year’s first round pick, will need to improve under Spagnuolo. Aubrayo Franklin and Sean Rogers are both free agents who were signed on short term deals, and the team could look elsewhere there in 2012 as well, in an attempt to upgrade the defensive front.
Yes, the Texans improved drastically in 2011 on defense with Wade Phillips. They also made several changes in personnel, from adding Johnathan Joseph, to drafting J.J. Watt, to getting full seasons out of DeMeco Ryans and Brian Cushing. A decade ago, Lovie Smith went to St. Louis and the defense improved dramatically on the way to the Super Bowl. They also turned over 7 defensive starters from 2000 to 2001.
The only other key free agent is Tracy Porter, but the Saints should be active trying to get players for Spagnuolo, and cannot stand pat in 2012. Spagnuolo has a great pedigree, and he may be in a better position now than in St. Louis, where it wasn’t his defenses that did him in, but rather a lack of offense in 2011. He shouldn’t lack for that as he game plans for 2012.

As much talk about how the Saints blitz, they couldn’t sack for shit. They couldn’t get pressure on anybody. You say Cameron Jordan needs to improve. Hell, he only got one sack, and it was in week 16, and he got called for a horse collar on it.
Sacks and pressure create interceptions. The Saints didn’t have one, so they couldn’t get the other.

This is a fantastic hire. You think Osi would go to NOLA this offseason to reunite with Spags, Lisk?
January 20th, 2012 at 12:17 PM
Sure about this?
Spagnuolo coached under Jim Johnson in Philly, who forgot more about blitzing towards the end of his career than Gregggg Williams ever knew.
January 20th, 2012 at 12:18 PM
For them to swap places, wouldn’t Williams have to become HC?
January 20th, 2012 at 12:18 PM
Sacks and pressure create interceptions.
It can work the other way too: good coverage can lead to more sacks/interceptions. But I agree, the Saints definitely need a better pass rush.
January 20th, 2012 at 12:18 PM
I agree about the hire. I would take Osi too. However, the name to watch on the line next year is Junior Galette.

he won’t be.

The key is going to be to upgrade the personnel, particularly at the LB level. Roman Harper became the de facto second-level pass rusher because none of the LBs could get to the QB for shit. Improving the depth of our DEs will also be key.
I got confidence in Spagnuolo to give the D some bite.
January 20th, 2012 at 12:21 PM
He will be.

Saints need to work out a deal with the Texans for Mario Williams. A first and a second will probably get it done.
January 20th, 2012 at 12:25 PM
We used this year’s first to get Mark Ingram last year.

Saints don’t have their first round pick for this year’s draft (traded to the Pats last year for the chance to take Mark Ingram). And I don’t think you can trade consecutive first rounders.
January 20th, 2012 at 12:25 PM
Mario is a free agent and will probably not be back
January 20th, 2012 at 12:26 PM
Bruce Arians has “retired” as OC of Steelers. Any good OC’s out there at this point?

Have you heard rumors?

They will sign Foster to a long term deal and Brooks Reed is cheaper. It would be nice to keep both though
January 20th, 2012 at 12:27 PM
I just dont see the numbers working out. I hope im wrong
January 20th, 2012 at 12:28 PM
According to the team, he’s their priority. And McClain has said that if nothing else, they’ll franchise him and trade him.
I think it would be foolish to pay him the type of money it will take to keep him. They can use that money for other areas of need/depth. And draft another Brooks Reed.
January 20th, 2012 at 12:28 PM
I’d take Mario Williams.
A lot of what the Saints will do in this offseason hinges on getting the key pieces (Brees, Nicks, Colston) signed up and stored away. There may be room for 1 big key FA acquisition. I hope it’s someone who can help the pass rush.
January 20th, 2012 at 12:29 PM
I wonder what they’ll do with Foster. He’s a restricted free agent, so they’ll tender him at the 1st/3rd rounder level, and likely match any offer he got. I’m all for them rewarding the guy for what he’s done, but I can’t help but think it’s just not smart to invest heavily at that position.
January 20th, 2012 at 12:30 PM

We had a good pass rush without Williams, but can imagine how much better it would be with him? He and Andre Johnson have been THE marquis players in the franchise. I have to think that Rick Smith will find a way to make it happen.
January 20th, 2012 at 12:31 PM
Texans are in a bit of a bind. Lots of key free agents and little to no cap room. Myers is also a FA. McClain mentioned Duane Brown needing to get extended – which is huge – he’s arguably the best LT in football right now.
January 20th, 2012 at 12:32 PM
Not entirely sure how I should feel about this. I’m not one of those cranky old fans who thinks they should still be running 30 times a game, but his gameplans seemed very hit and miss. Like when the QB is limping and we still throw 50 times.
Ben really liked him, but Ben is a dumbass.

Actors who hate their movies. I love Bob Hoskins on Super Mario Brothers.
January 20th, 2012 at 12:32 PM
McNair said yesterday they are going to look into giving him a deal. If I busted my ass for two years making the league minimum, i’d hold out for a deal. I don’t know if Foster feels the same way though
January 20th, 2012 at 12:33 PM
especially since running backs are actually a worthwhile investment early in the first round now due to the new CBA.
January 20th, 2012 at 12:33 PM
The Saints defense is a mess heading into next year. Franklin and Rogers weren’t worth the money. They’re done. Sedrick Ellis is underachieving. Jordan, Smith, and Galette could be a decent DE rotation. Jo-Lonn Dunbar is a good LB, Jonathan Casillas could be a good LB if he stays healthy. Scott Shanle is done. There are rumblings that Vilma is done. The corners are good. Roman Harper is complete shit. Malcolm Jenkins is an enigma.
Plus, the Saints don’t have a 1, and they have to tie down Nicks, Colston, and Brees.
January 20th, 2012 at 12:33 PM
I’m really glad we didn’t stay in the race for Asomugha last year. Imagine how much more of a bind the Texans would be in had they stayed in the market and actually signed him.
The Texans don’t need to add a lot of big pieces, unlike last off season. This is more about retaining much of what they have and then drafting for depth. And if they wanted to take a serious look at another WR to replace Walter or Jones, I wouldn’t have a problem with that at all.
January 20th, 2012 at 12:34 PM
I dont think Myers will cost that much. I think they lock up everyone, give Foster a deal and let Mario walk
January 20th, 2012 at 12:34 PM
Funny, didn’t see his name on All-Pro…

how was mario picking up the switch to a 3-4 LB before he got hurt?
January 20th, 2012 at 12:36 PM
Pretty damn well. It was night and day between pre season and when the season started. He was getting after opposing QBs much more often if you ask me.
January 20th, 2012 at 12:37 PM
My buddy at work who is a Texans fan said he was adapting well and was getting lots of pressure before he destroyed his boob muscle
January 20th, 2012 at 12:38 PM
how was mario picking up the switch to a 3-4 LB before he got hurt?
5 sacks in 5 games. 1 forced fumble. I think he was enjoying his new role where he had the freedom to rush the QB virtually every single down and didn’t have to worry as much about the run. But the one downside is that the other team knows that in a passing situation there’s going to be a coverage hole behind his position every time.

Yeah, I think it was time for a change. I think it was Rooney’s choice, not buying the retirement thing for a minute. Even with that OL, they should not be 21st in total offense with those weapons. For what Ben has put that franchise through, he should shut his mouth and let them find an OC.
January 20th, 2012 at 1:05 PM
no, i think Heigel just paints all her characters as shrew, humorless and uptight.
January 20th, 2012 at 1:29 PM
Saints better pony up. He is still under contract with the Giants. They can either pay him his money, or hold him for ransom.
January 20th, 2012 at 1:48 PM
I think the Saints are pretty close to being good on defense, if they don’t blitz as much. They actually were holding down the Niners in the second half last weekend until they went to their alleged prevent defense in the final minutes.
January 20th, 2012 at 1:52 PM
That is, if they bring back their key players.
January 20th, 2012 at 1:56 PM
and as Breesus said, get rid of Roman Harper.
January 20th, 2012 at 2:30 PM
/if they get rid of Roman FUCKING Harper
Well allow me to retort: GTFO. When he’s allowed to do Roman Harper things, he’s phenomenal. And with a guy like Spagnuolo, maybe he help make Harper better in coverage. But you want to get rid of the guy who able to chase after the QB this season?
January 20th, 2012 at 2:59 PM
The Saints need to focus on getting more national exposure.
