Ricky Gervais dominates the Golden Globes? I didn’t think so…thought he was much weaker than last year.
Also, Lana Del Rey was either really nervous, or else her “beautiful” voice is just a product of the studio…because her SNL performance was painful.

While true, it’s still better than the canned schlock we’ll get from Billy Crystal at the Oscars. Gervais calling out Johnny Depp about The Tourist a year later was quite hilarious.

He also needs someone to check his wardrobe before he walks on camera. Anyone see his mismatch tie, shirt & jacket? Looks like he had Ray Charles dress him

I copied this just so that I could see it again. That was an ass whipping from start to finish.
IU is really struggling to guard. They are giving up 1.13 points per possession in the Big 10. That won’t win you many games.
Northwestern and Iowa did OSU some nice favors this weekend. The Big 10 is turning into an absolute bloodbath.

A 15-2 season’s a failure? Dang, since when does Bill Self coach the Packers?
January 16th, 2012 at 8:42 AM
ya know, the media is talking too much about the Packers loss, the Giants upset, and the Pats. C’mon, J-mac. don’t be like the MSM. give the Saints their due.
January 16th, 2012 at 8:44 AM
yeah, sorry about that advice regarding the Hogs Caribou. didn’t see that defense coming from them.

haha, at this point I just hope the roundup isn’t the only post for 3 hours.
you’d think a sports blog would be really excited to talk about 3 of the 4 games that just happened and start previewing the upcoming championship games.

Why the fuck couldn’t they have done this when I was at the Musee d’Orsay? Bullshit.
January 16th, 2012 at 8:52 AM
Seriously… wtf was Gregg Williams doing? He just kept blitzing and blitzing and leaving Davis in 1-on-1 coverage. I kept waiting for him to mix in a fake blitz and drop into some zone. Nope. Seemed very similar to the defense played on Tebow last week that let him shine.
And how bout some ball control guys! Went to college in Northern California and have to listen to niner fans for a least another week.
January 16th, 2012 at 8:54 AM
Damn that’s a great stat.
January 16th, 2012 at 8:54 AM
they still have that pre-season championship to fall back on that Packer fans have been touting for the past 4 months, I wouldn’t call it a complete failure.
January 16th, 2012 at 8:55 AM
The Packers should have snuck into the playoffs at 10-6, then beaten the Falcons in the wild card round before losing to the Giants. Then their season would be a success?
January 16th, 2012 at 8:55 AM
yeah, i was surprised their defense played as poorly as the niners defense did in the last 5 minutes and the saints had less play makers to cover.
live by the blitz, die by the blitz.
January 16th, 2012 at 8:55 AM
I gotta say I dont give a shit about the 49ers but when Vernon Davis came off the field weeping it got pretty dusty in my house. I’m such a female sometimes.
January 16th, 2012 at 8:57 AM
Giants became first 4 seed to knock off 1 seed in the NFC. the NFC #1 seed was 19-0 in the divisional round from 1988-2006. they are 1-4 since.
January 16th, 2012 at 8:57 AM
Also, the Texans played well, but lets not act like they should have won that game. They turned the ball over four times. Baltimore rarely blitzed because they wanted to bait Yates into mistakes, and Flacco’s receivers dropped five passes (but we can downgrade it to four since Evans hauled in that magnificent one-handed catch).
Houston is a good football team, but let’s not act like mistakes don’t count. Any team that turns the ball over four times doesn’t deserve to win anything.
January 16th, 2012 at 8:58 AM
Also, 17 point victory is the largest in NFL history for a team on the road beating the defending champs.
January 16th, 2012 at 8:58 AM
it would have been more successful than being 15-1 and losing your first home playoff game.
high expectations for that team.
January 16th, 2012 at 8:58 AM
only thing missing from that play was it not being on the last play of the game. it was so much like the TO catch against the Packers. tears and all.
January 16th, 2012 at 8:59 AM

sadly, all the ones who, with a straight face, tell you they celebrate Robert E. Lee’s birthday today probably take the day off.
January 16th, 2012 at 9:01 AM
Yep. Saints blitzed way too much…and the Packers didn’t blitz nearly enough. 1st half was ridiculous, they got ZERO pressure on Eli.
January 16th, 2012 at 9:01 AM
Houston will be scary next year. Great d, great o. Need to get Kendall wright in the draft and we will be set.
January 16th, 2012 at 9:02 AM

January 16th, 2012 at 9:02 AM
I don’t know about that, Giants/Niners is come to be tremendous fun next Sunday. I have absolutely no idea who is going to win that one. However, both NE and Baltimore can go contract HIV before the game.
January 16th, 2012 at 9:02 AM
It used to be Lee Jackson King Day in VA.
January 16th, 2012 at 9:02 AM
the ravens offensive line was pretty terrible in that game and their defense made the plays at the end. Their defensive front 4 didn’t get the rush they needed to be successful, they will have their hands full in Foxboro.
January 16th, 2012 at 9:03 AM
It was nice to see Alex Smith break it off in the Aints’ ass there at the end. Dude was dealing on Saturday.
January 16th, 2012 at 9:04 AM
Once I saw Smith run the sweep I thought “that is a fucking brilliant playcall.”

Anything exciting happen this weekend?
January 16th, 2012 at 9:05 AM
I don’t know who it was, but the packers left end looked like he was just slow dancing in 1 on 1 coverage during the pass rush. dude had zero effort.
January 16th, 2012 at 9:05 AM
Not Clayton Bigsby. That’s for damn sure.
January 16th, 2012 at 9:05 AM
The play call to do a QB run on 3rd down was just about the most brilliant play call I’ve ever seen. They ran two WRs away from that side to simulate a slant and the safety bit on it perfectly (or terribly, depending on your rooting interest). Jim Harbaugh is the man.
January 16th, 2012 at 9:06 AM
If you thought it was dusty in your house, you should have been at the bar with me. I will never not get emotional during that play. For any Niner fans… if you listen to the KNBR call and tell me you didn’t get misty, you are a fucking liar.

January 16th, 2012 at 9:08 AM
No one mentioned it on any highlight show this weekend, (mainly because they were too busy stroking Tebow) but watch Kyle Williams come in motion on that play, throw a perfect block, which allowed Staley to get down field and seal the touchdown. It was fucking glorious.
I will never forgive ESPN for showing those highlights second to the ass whooping in New England.
January 16th, 2012 at 9:10 AM
Tim Tebow took lessons from Jordan Jefferson on running the option.
January 16th, 2012 at 9:10 AM
Harbaugh clearly used the Eagles and Lions on Super Tecmo Bowl when he played it. That’s the QB keeper for those teams.
January 16th, 2012 at 9:11 AM
it would only make sense to trump the 49ers game if the bronco’s loss in NE was a Tim Tebow career eulogy. however, ESPN will not let that happen, so they pushed better content in favor of more eyes.
January 16th, 2012 at 9:11 AM
It bears repeating: Jim. Harbaugh.

really? Because it seems like it’s totally awesome. Touch football teams getting smashed in the mouth, Donte Whitner changing the game 3 times (1 for the good, 2 for the bad), super QBs getting comeuppance. Exciting games, veteran stars, etc.
I like pro football the best.
January 16th, 2012 at 9:12 AM
The 04 Steelers could have easily been the first one to do it. Bless your heart, and foot Doug Brien.
January 16th, 2012 at 9:12 AM

Oh wow. +1. That’s… well a perfect summation of the JS.
Not the least bit shocked the Packers lost. The Hail Mary at the end of the half pretty much summed up their defense all year. Woodson played TERRIBLE yesterday. You can’t wait until the second round of the playoffs to start coughing up the ball left and right either. This would have been much more painful had Rodgers not shut up the haters last year. Poor Tony Romo.
January 16th, 2012 at 9:12 AM
And when they snag Trent Richardson in the late 2nd round, they’ll be unstoppable.

Because MAKING the championship game is such an accomplishment to look back upon with pride? Didn’t the Jets make 2 of those recently? Whatever.
January 16th, 2012 at 9:15 AM
Had enough of the pats even though i like watching that offense. Balti sucks, niners are a good story but I can’t root for them because I am jealous that a first year coach with David carrs twin can do this well so quick while the texans blow for ten years. I guess giants?
January 16th, 2012 at 9:15 AM
word. and the SF game, once again, a top 5 defense beats top 5 offense. IT ALWAYS happens that way.
January 16th, 2012 at 9:15 AM
i’d rather see ray lewis keep playing for another 5 years than have the ravens win a super bowl.
my god, that team would not shut up how awesome they are if they ever won. it would be worse than the Jets in peak preseason form.

January 16th, 2012 at 9:20 AM
Wait….this happened? I was so hammered after the SF game, I barely watched Patriots/Tebows. I looked up at one point at saw Gronk score to make it 28-7 and ordered another Moose Drool, confident in my decision to stay out and enjoy the night.
January 16th, 2012 at 9:20 AM
I see them laying an egg next week, as they usally do on the road after a big home win. Hell, the two times they beat the steelers this year they acted like they won the super bowl. Then lost the next week to a shit team. And Flacco sucks.
January 16th, 2012 at 9:20 AM

why is making the championship game some bench mark of a successful season? that’s all my point is. They lost in the playoffs = Failure. I fail to see why losing in the championship game is any less painful than losing in the divisional round. Unless you’re a Jets fan, and you treat those championship games like Super Bowls.
January 16th, 2012 at 9:20 AM
I dont want to jinx anything, but the Pats have a chance to chase away some of their demons of the past few years. Avenging their loss to the Ravens in 09, while beating the dude that knocked out Brady in ’08, and then beating the team that ended their perfect season? I guess that would be too perfect a scenario to happen.

January 16th, 2012 at 9:25 AM
here’s the thing.
#1 seeds and #2 seeds are expected to win their home divisional game b/c they are arguably the best two teams in their conference, losing to a 4th, 5th or 6th seed when you host in your divisional game, especially if you get manhandled, is not a successful season.
January 16th, 2012 at 9:26 AM
Isn’t Tebow supposed to rise from the dead today or something?
January 16th, 2012 at 9:27 AM
losing to a 4th, 5th or 6th seed when you host in your divisional game, especially if you get manhandled, is not a successful season.
Agree. Going 15-1 and Losing in the championship game wouldn’t have made for a successful season either though, would it?
January 16th, 2012 at 9:28 AM
Saw something crazy today like the NFC #1 Seeds were 16-0 in the divisional round from ’90-’06 and 1-4 since then.
January 16th, 2012 at 9:29 AM
they’ve been rallying around robert kraft’s call to focus on their goal of winning in honor of his late wife.
it’s been a while since I’ve seen this team with this level of concentration and execution.
January 16th, 2012 at 9:31 AM
The modern, parity-age playoffs are a crapshoot. The best team doesn’t usually win. It’s not the ideal way to crown a champion – but it’s a whole lot of fun to watch. But dumping all over a team that won 95 percent of its games for laying one egg seems a bit much. Though I know that’s Internet Standard Protocol.

I don’t know. In 04 I knew the Steelers were going to lose to the Pats in the championship game, so I didn’t act like the season was a failure. Considering it was Big Ben’s rookie season during that run, it felt more of an accomplishment to go that far.

if your assuming the super bowl win is the only way to validate whether a season is a success or not, then you’re correct.
however, in the context of the argument at hand with the packers, losing at home in the divisional round was a huge disappointment in the fashion they did. if they lost 38-35 on a last second OT FG, different story. and if they won divisional round but lost in the CCG, it’s not as bad but still closer to the goal than losing they way they did.

jck49erfan – can i quote you on that when smith turns back into a pumpkin and the niners season ends in your tears. Or you going to fall back on the fact that it was a great season, won some great games, can’t wait till next year.
Everyone rushing to crown alex smith a higher tier qb is a joke. 1 game (even a great playoff win) does not make you a great qb. See Tebow, Tim.
January 16th, 2012 at 9:39 AM
well of course. peyton isn’t playing. duh.
January 16th, 2012 at 9:39 AM
You are basically right, it’s a failure not to win it all. I think the events of the last 5 days had an effect on the Packers that really is not measurable. Discount Double Check and his receivers were not in sync at all through the game and I’m sure the stress of this week played a major part.
January 16th, 2012 at 9:42 AM
How is a playoff that involves the top 8 teams “not an ideal way to determine a champ” unless there is sarcasm that I dont detect?

If they had gotten smoked at home by the niners next weekend at home I’d argue that it would have been almost as big of a disappointment. They were considered the best team in the league by far by most people for the entire year. Anything short of the super bowl would have been considered a failure.

Absolutely. I’ll take no satisfaction in our season if we lose next week. I might be in the minority in that belief, but what’s the point of playing if not to win? I understand the points you guys are trying to make about GB. Am I more excited about next year given our performance this year? Sure. But that doesn’t change the fact that I’ll be inconsolable if we lose.
Alex isn’t ELIte, but he’s certainly better than in previous years. His teammates believe in him, his coach believes in him, and finally, Niner fans believe in him. Confidence is a great motivator.

– I believe the Packers will have to play the niners at candlestick next year… looking forward to that game.
January 16th, 2012 at 9:52 AM
Technically it’s 12 teams.
January 16th, 2012 at 9:55 AM
I believe that’s the case.
Still trying to wrap my head around what happened Saturday. Might have been the most emotional, thrilling sporting experience of my life. I’ve never had highs and lows like that watching a game.
January 16th, 2012 at 9:58 AM
Good buddy of mine is a die hard 9ers fan, the sheer joy on his face when Davis caught that TD was like a child on Chrstmas morning. I was really happy for him, it was weird, like he won the lottery or something

@atl_badger, hope the date went well. details?

This. All of this. I think I smiled all night long.
January 16th, 2012 at 10:00 AM
This is exactly why Tomlin played Ben in the final games. He knew that the #2 seed was a punched ticket to the AFC title game against a team they already beat during the year. Damn.
January 16th, 2012 at 10:02 AM
it was a great game. From someone rooting against the niners, I was actually happy when smith scored on his little scamper, it meant NO had a chance to win it. if smith just got the 1st down it was ballgame (niners were in field goal range and were down 2). I was glad he scored, elated when Graham scored, and in a state of shock when Smith to Davis happened on 3rd and long with the game looking like it was going to OT.

Thanks… it went well. Based on the texts I received from her yesterday, I’m looking at a sure thing next time I see her. Not sure if she’s the type I would take home to Mom, but that’s not what I’m looking for right now. Cleveland sounds like she’s looking just for a good time.

@HtownHacker…
was it you that had all that money tied up in that poker site? You ever get that back?

Glad to hear it.

January 16th, 2012 at 10:15 AM
forget the texts… us married folk like details from the “sure thing the next time you see her”. Nipple color, areola size, texture, tramp stamp???, shaved or au natural. The good stuff. Not “I can’t wait to see you again” or “I had a great time, I really felt comfortable with you”.
January 16th, 2012 at 10:17 AM
Well the Patriots suck because they still haven’t won a road playoff game in the last four years.

Well, we were just chatting normally and then she dropped a “what side of the bed do you like to sleep on” into our text conversation… the convo got progressively more rated R… she was very annoyed at the current dry spell she admitted to being in, etc… I’ll leave the rest to your imagination. Like I said, not exactly a girl that I’d take home to Mom.
January 16th, 2012 at 10:19 AM
It’s funny… our date couldn’t have been more PG. It was just a couple of drinks at a blues club.

I’m still pissed off at NFL and CBS for starting the Patriots/Broncos game without many people realizing it, I flipped from the saints, assuming we had a good 10 minutes before kickoff – thinking they’d start it at 8:30, and they were 50 seconds in. Missed out on lock-city bets of pats and pats first half and pats first half over. This happen to anyone else?

It kicked off when it was scheduled to, no? It’s not like they saw the niners game was close and they decided “hey, lets start this game 20 minutes early!”
January 16th, 2012 at 10:30 AM
yeah, it was a delicate balance of flipping back and forth between the two

I thought they usually put a buffer between the games, I’m not saying they started it while the other game was going cuz they don’t do that, but I’m betting I’m not the only one still stuck on the Saints/Niners channel when they flip over and the Patriots started. Thought they would just move back to 8:30.
January 16th, 2012 at 10:35 AM
+1 Great game.
January 16th, 2012 at 10:35 AM
Losing at home in the manner they lost as the number 1 seed is a failure. Losing in the Championship game means you won at least one game to get there. Losing in the Divisional game means you lost at home in your opening game with all of the advantages of a bye built in. Taking a dump on the Jets to ease your butthurt over the Pack is WEAK.

Agree.
Losing in the Championship game means you won at least one game to get there.
And it would still be disappointing and a failure. They were 15-1.

Everyone likes taking dumps on the Jets.

Two vaginas? Pics or it didn’t happen.
January 16th, 2012 at 10:46 AM
For the players I’m sure it feels like more of a failure but as a fan it was still a fun season, Packer games were pretty much the only thing I had to look forward to during the week…one bad afternoon doesn’t negate all that
January 16th, 2012 at 10:48 AM
This is really what it’s about. They didn’t just lose, they got embarrassed and completely dominated at home. The refs gifted them two touchdowns and they still lost by 17.
At home.
January 16th, 2012 at 10:51 AM
Two vaginas? I haven’t even seen one!

Getting beat by Vernon Davis is one thing. He’s a beast.
Getting beat by an Alex Smith bootleg … argh. Argh.
Still, the better team won. Giants-Niners should be a great game.
January 16th, 2012 at 11:03 AM
You can’t seperate the loss from their performance. The loss makes the season a failure for a number of reasons. 1) The league builds in all of the advantages for the number 1 seed to make it back to the Championship game; the bye, playing at home, the opponent having to play the week before and travel to your place amongst other things. 2) This loss exposed the Packers. When things weren’t going perfectly for them, the rest of the team couldn’t follow the lead of Rodgers and grind play by play the way you saw New Orleans do against San Francisco. 3) your defense is horrific.

Who said otherwise? I agree with everything you said here. I’ll console myself with last year’s memory and anxiously await next year.

The Ravens have the best overall resume in football, bar none. Wins over the Steelers (twice), Texans (twice), Bengals (twice), and Niners. I’m pretty sure they’ll be focused against NE.

They’ve also laid some eggs too. Seattle, Tennessee, Jacksonville!, and they got worked by San Diego.

That’s disgusting!
/ guy on here who once said vaginas were gross to look at.
January 16th, 2012 at 11:16 AM
Knowing the ravens, they probably blame the refs and everyone else but themselves for those losses. Nothing is ever their fault. Their motto is “We are the victim”. New England will handle them like Matt Schaub would have yesterday if he were healthy.
January 16th, 2012 at 11:24 AM
His point was that they play to the level of their opponent. NE is a great football team. The Ravens will be fine.
I love how everyone thinks Schaub would have lit them up yesterday if he were healthy. Yeah, just like he did earlier this year when he was healthy, right?
