Jeff Fisher’s First Challenge in St. Louis: Don’t Botch the NFL Draft, Which the Rams Have Done For the Last Decade
Jeff Fisher picked the Rams over the Dolphins Friday, and he was widely praised for making a wise decision, since the Rams play in a horrible division, have a franchise QB and franchise RB, and have the 2nd pick in the 2012 draft. If not for major injuries on the offensive line, the Rams probably would have been a 5-6 win team, which means don’t be shocked if they make a leap back to around .500 in 2012.
I should put an asterisk besides “back to around .500″ with this caveat: If they draft wisely. That’s not something they’ve done in the last decade. Here’s a hard-to-believe stat:
The Rams drafted wide receiver Torry Holt with their first pick in the 1999 draft. Holt, selected to seven Pro Bowls, was a fantastic choice. That was followed by a lengthy, horrific drought.
From 2000 through 2011, the Rams drafted 104 players. And of the 104 players, only one has made the Pro Bowl. That’s running back Steven Jackson, who has been honored three times. One more time: 104 draft picks, one Pro Bowl player.
I don’t put a ton of stock in Pro Bowl selections, but one out of the last 104 is so pathetic that I had to look up their draft history. This site has all the terrible selections. I used a photo of Trung Candidate for this post because he was the Rams’ 1st-round pick the year after they selected Torry Holt. Canidate, who starred at Arizona, carried 240 times for 1,095 yards and seven TDs … in four seasons with the Rams and Redskins. He was out of the league at the age of 26. The rest of the list is equally ghastly.
Fisher’s got a crucial decision to make with the No. 2 pick: Take a potentially-elite receiver in Justin Blackmon, or draft a potential franchise left tackle in Matt Kalil to protect Sam Bradford? Surely a segment of the Rams’ fanbase doesn’t want to take Kalil and see him turn into another Jason Smith (their No. 1 pick in 2009 who has been a bust), which is why I think Blackmon is the obvious choice. Unless, of course, someone wants to trade up and select Robert Griffin No. 2 overall?

I like Young Jason talkin’ the draft so much like he’s some kind of guru.

Is Chris Long a bust or just underproducing? I have no idea, I don’t pay attention to the Rams that much.

I still think they should take Kalil over Blacmon because what’s hurt them the last 2 years is Bradford’s continuing injury issues. Until they fix that o-line, Bradford is going to keep getting hurt and missing games and stunting his development.

Adam Archuleta is married to Jennifer Walcott. A legend, IMO.

Is that division that horrible though? For the first time in 30 years it’s up and coming. I think this was a good hire by St. Louis. I’d take Fisher over Cowher. He’s done a lot with a lot less, dealing with a cheap, meddlesome owner, and navigating a franchise relocation quite admirably (4 stadia in 4 years). Couple that with being placed in a division with Peyton Manning for a decade, and I think this guy did real well.

so the last 10 years of the draft has been a disaster for the Rams, yet according to this post they have a franchise QB, who they acquired through the draft.
January 16th, 2012 at 4:18 PM
I think he had a good season this year, but I can’t say for sure because I avoid watching the Rams if at all possible.
January 16th, 2012 at 4:18 PM
Another segment probably wants them to take Kalil and hope he doesn’t turn into another Jason Smith.
badlands: Chris Long improved a lot this year. He’s not great or anything, but he was pretty good.

As opposed to another kind of draft?

Agreed, according to Falcons and Lions it takes at least three number 1 draft picks to get a decent WR. If you have a great line and great QB play the WRs will perform. Plus you have guys like T.Y Hilton and some Baylor WR’s you can pick up later in the draft.
January 16th, 2012 at 4:21 PM
Underproducing for being a #2 pick, but is still a good player.
January 16th, 2012 at 4:22 PM
I agree. although I hope they let Kalil slide and the Vikings don’t fuck up their draft spot and take him.
who gives a shit what a segment of the Rams fanbase thinks, you have to go with Kalil here in my opinion. wasn’t the last “potentially elite WR” Crabtree when he came out of Texas Tech? that seems like a pretty iffy bet with the #2 pick to me, although I do think Blackmon will be a damn fine WR.
January 16th, 2012 at 4:23 PM
very true.
if bradford is good enough and has time to throw he could make brandon lloyd really good and enhance other WR they bring in.
January 16th, 2012 at 4:24 PM
Is that division that horrible though?
The defending Super Bowl Champ will be in the division so I guess it’s not that horrible.
January 16th, 2012 at 4:24 PM
Crabtree wishes he had DHB’s hands.
/not really, but he certainly drops the ball too much
January 16th, 2012 at 4:25 PM
anyone got a link to the existence of the Rams fanbase?
January 16th, 2012 at 4:26 PM
the crazy thing is, the st Louis rams also botched the MLB draft and the NBA draft.
they are that bad at drafting.
January 16th, 2012 at 4:26 PM
who gives a shit what a segment of the Rams fanbase thinks
Pssh, somebody buy this guy a clue. Football teams worry about maximizing ratings first, football strategy and boring shit comes later
January 16th, 2012 at 4:26 PM
13 sacks this year. Pretty decent.
January 16th, 2012 at 4:27 PM
I agree. although I hope they let Kalil slide and the Vikings don’t fuck up their draft spot and take him.
If the Rams let Kalil slide, I can’t imagine the Vikings don’t run up there to take him.
January 16th, 2012 at 4:28 PM
13 sacks this year. Pretty decent
I don’t put a lot of stock in Pro Bowl selections but he didn’t get selected this year so he does kinda suck
January 16th, 2012 at 4:29 PM
this was the second image on google images under rams fans, and seems to sum it up pretty well.
January 16th, 2012 at 4:30 PM
Victor Cruz should have been a pro bowl selection. but doesn’t matter, he won’t be able to play in it anyway…
/crosses fingers
January 16th, 2012 at 4:33 PM
I think Chris Long was top three or four in the league in QB pressures this year. He’s awesome. As is Junior Animal and that safety O.J. Atogwhe was a solid starter for a third rounder. Jason Smith blows, and Roger Saffold really regressed after a strong rookie season. And Bradford is a salary cap monster who has shown flashes of competency, but let’s be honest, if he’d been drafted under the new CBA scale there’s no question the Rams go QB with this year’s top pick.
January 16th, 2012 at 4:34 PM
you have a lot more faith in the Vikings front office than I do.
January 16th, 2012 at 4:38 PM
If the Rams let Kalil slide, I can’t imagine the Vikings don’t run up there to take him.
I heard from a pretty big time blogger that despite the fact that they play cover 2 most of the time, their number one need is a bump and run corner.
January 16th, 2012 at 4:39 PM
I could definitely see that happening if he was entering year 4 of the rookie deal or if they had a shot at an andrew luck/cam newton type player going into the 3rd year of the rookie deal.
January 16th, 2012 at 4:43 PM
if bradford is good enough and has time to throw he could make brandon lloyd really good and enhance other WR they bring in
you could insert ‘vez’ for bradford and still be right
January 16th, 2012 at 4:44 PM
Bradford is signing with the Patriots, too?
January 16th, 2012 at 5:06 PM
I’m amazed at all of this “franchise QB” talk surrounding Bradford. Having said that, If Fisher thinks Blackmon is the next TO, he has to take him. They Rams don’t have a single option on offense after their RB that scares anyone. I’d also look at picking Orson Charles or Dwayne Allen in the second round if I were them.
January 16th, 2012 at 5:09 PM
that would be nice, wouldn’t it?
January 16th, 2012 at 5:09 PM
How’d this comment get ignored?
January 16th, 2012 at 5:37 PM
With the Titans, Fisher did a great job drafting OL in the later rounds (3-5) and most turned out great for the team. Not sure if that is attributable to Fisher but he could go Blackmon then get a couple sleeper OLs later on
January 16th, 2012 at 6:24 PM
I think it could be argued that the NFC West > AFC East, and pretty easily at that.
January 16th, 2012 at 6:32 PM
Don’t know about that, jthussler. The Dolphins were at least competitive in their games. And buffalo looked good in the first half of the season. The Rams were turds out the gate. The Seahawks looked competitive, but that is washed by how disappointing the Cards wound up being.
January 16th, 2012 at 11:52 PM
Don’t forget the Rams only landed Jackson because Bill Parcells and the Cowboys inexplicably traded out of the first round, rather than take the best RB on the board (a position they needed badly at the time).
/not bitter
//really
January 17th, 2012 at 2:52 AM
The NFC West is trending up. The Niners could end up in the Super Bowl. The Cardinals and Seahawks both closed the season well, despite having shitty quarterbacks. Let a good free agent end up in Seattle, and perhaps Manning in Arizona, and boom goes the dynamite.
January 17th, 2012 at 10:35 AM
They would be nuts not to take J Blackmon
