ESPN Settled a Wrongful Termination Lawsuit with Former Announcer Ron Franklin
Ron Franklin, the once-outstanding ESPN college football and basketball announcer who was fired from the network in January 2011 for – among other things – calling colleague Jeannine Edwards “sweet baby,” has settled out-of-court with the network in a wrongful termination lawsuit.
No other details have emerged.
Franklin, despite a clumsy end to his career, was in his prime in the 90s when I was in college and Big Monday was a staple, and Saturday night football games on ESPN is what everyone watched while pre-gaming. Franklin always seemed to call the biggest games – think Musburger and Herbie now – and always seemed to do a tremendous job. Confession: Sometimes, I’ll just surf You Tube for SEC games from the 90s just to hear Franklin on the mic. It brings back memories of Power Hour and Asshole.

He used to be one of the best. Loved his voice. Later in his career he seemed to model his announcing after Gus Johnson. Don’t do any homework and mail it in each night.

SportsByBrooks indicated that emails he’d had with ESPN employees had been subpoenaed for the Franklin lawsuit before it was settled.

Ron Franklin was THE voice of SEC football when I was a kid. One of my all time faves.

Got that right, he was THE announcer on Sat nite football in the late 80′s and into the 90′s, loved when he called the games.
