This is an epic fail for the M’s. You trade a talented young pitcher, with a huge upside, for a guy that’s destined to be a DH.

How good might Michael Pineda be? Here are just a few tidbits to chew on:
• This guy whiffed 173 hitters in 171 innings last year. And you know how many starters in the history of the Yankees have averaged better than a strikeout an inning over a full season? How about TWO: Roger Clemens in 2002 and David Cone twice (1997 and 1998).
• Those 173 strikeouts and that 9.1 strikeouts-per-nine-innings ratio came in a season in which Pineda pitched at 22 years old. Want to guess how many right-handed pitchers in the history of the American League ever had that many punchouts and that good a strikeout ratio at age 22 or younger? Exactly one: Dave Boswell (barely), for the 1966 Twins.
• Pineda’s average fastball whooshed along at 94.7 miles per hour last year, according to FanGraphs. The only starting pitchers in the big leagues who topped that were Alexi Ogando (95.1), Justin Verlander (95.0) and David Price (94.8).

22! Yankees fans are upset that the are getting the above for a dude that will be a DH and has only proven he can hit over 18 lousy games? People really do over value prospects these days.

Great deal for both sides, Montero will rake no matter where he plays, and Pineda is just nasty.

Really? They are actually a relativly young team (outside Jeter/ARod)…
Martin, Swisher, Cano, Granderson, Gardner, CC, Pineda, Nova, Robertson, Hughes.

The yankees have never had problems scoring or going out and getting a free agent to booster the offense (see Tex, Grandy, ARod, etc). They made a move to get a young pitcher who has shown substantial promise and all they gave up was a guy that was going to catch less than 50% of their games and spend most his time as a DH.

I’m not sure how this is a bad thing? My gut tells me that Montero is going to be a very special hitter. Worth holding onto? I thought they could have received more. In fact, they did in the Cliff Lee deal that was ruined by another player unable to pass a physical.

I am not a fan of this deal. I don’t think it is soul crushing, because the Yanks money can cover up a lot up, but I don’t think it was good deal at all.

A great hitting but terrible fielding catcher for a 22 year old fireballer with ridiculous upside? The yanks have plenty of offense and robbed the Mariners.

In a couple years when Montero is an Edgar Martinez clone and the Yankees have the guy that will be taking over the #1 roll from fat ass CC people will realize how one-sided this really was.

I think it’s great that Cashman is bringing in a flyball pitcher who fares poorly against lefties to Short Porch Stadium. I don’t see Pineda suffering any sort of sophomore slump at all due to this.

Good deal for the M’s. Addressed a weakness by dealing a strength and you can never rely on a young arm. Too much can happen to them. Yanks took more risk on this one, though I do really like Pineda, and Campos is a really good prospect as well, though he’s quite a bit away from making an impact.
