Henrik Zetterberg Channeled Peter Forsberg During a Shootout Attempt
Last night the Detroit Red Wings won for the 13th consecutive home game last night. The highlight of the evening was Henrik Zetterberg’s super fancy shootout goal that left Coyotes goalie Mike Smith sprawled out on the ice in embarassment. You might remember Zetterberg’s fellow Swede, Peter Forsberg scoring a similar goal to clinch the gold medal in the 1994 Winter Olympics. And people complain about shootouts.

Nice move but Smith very much gave up at the end. Could have poked checked the puck. Looking forward to an early tilt with SCUM tomorrow. Big game at what is likely to be a half-empty Joe Lewis Arena.

I love all the hockey posts today. Goalies must feel like shit when they get beat like that.
On another note, really crushed about Carcillo being out for the year.

The apologists are out in full force.
“He’s a gritty player! He will be missed!”
“We lost our edge!”
“How can you not feel bad for the guy!”
No he won’t, no we didn’t and his own reckless behavior cost him his knee.

Sarcasm font?

It’s January 13 and already I’m scouring the draft rankings for next year. Oilers hockey everyone!

No. Throw your stick out there. It’s a shootout. Give a last ditch effort instead of just falling back into your own net.
What do you want? I gave Zetterberg credit for a very nice move.

He’s sliding to his right, all of his weight is on his right leg and his right arm (the only holding the stick), no chance he could go for the pockcheck.

Having faced a few PK’s as a soccer goalie, it does suck. But in soccer there’s also a less likely chance you make a save, even if you go the right way.

Garland, Schenn for JVR? Thoughts?

Is this your way of saying that you had low self-esteem when you were a soccer goalie?

I wonder if Carcillo will even be in the NHL next year.
January 13th, 2012 at 5:34 PM
Have you seen much of Reinhart? I haven’t but he seems to be up in several rankings.
January 13th, 2012 at 5:36 PM
Hell no, I was a cocky bastard as a goalie. I was always talking shit and playing aggressive. Just saying it’s pretty deflating to let one up because you expect to save every single shot.

Seen him live 2 or 3 times this year, massive kid, skates well for a big guy, mean, looked better handling the puck, not sold on hockey sense. Probably a top 15 pick.

No interest. I’m far from giving up on Schenn and I’ve never been a JVR fan. Schenn is always going to be a defence first guy and it takes years to learn all the in’s and out’s of that at the NHL level.

That last comment had all kinds of punctuation failures. Brain is fried.
Geez – I assume you want the Oilers to draft blueline help. Any preferences? Murray? Dumba?
January 13th, 2012 at 5:45 PM
I’m a Schenn fan, his contract is manageable for a player that should grow into a 2nd pairing guy. You’re right in that he needs seasoning, I’m seeing it with Smid this year, 7th year in the league and he’s finally developed into a reliable top 4 guy.
Plus, I don’t like JVR’s contract, at all.

Canadians not like American hockey players? NEVER.

They’ll be targetting D, but going to be tough to pass up Yakupov or Grigorenko if they end up with a top 2 pick, perhaps they trade down a few slots if that happens. If they’re in the 3 or 4 hole then either Murry or Dumba will be alright by me – though I lean Dumba.
January 13th, 2012 at 5:48 PM
I don’t mind JVR as a player, just not a 6 year 4.25M cap hit player.
January 13th, 2012 at 5:50 PM
Not a hockey guy, but that was really awesome right? Looked pretty awesome.
January 13th, 2012 at 5:52 PM
Yes, I based that opinion solely on the nationality of the two players. Has nothing to do with the fact that Leafs don’t need another one-way forward with a bad contract.
January 13th, 2012 at 5:54 PM
PL – it was a really good move, limited number of guys have the combo of skill and balls to pull it off.
January 13th, 2012 at 5:56 PM
I was assuming that the Oilers can’t continue to be as bad they’ve been. Figuring they end up in the 3-7 range. Would definitely take one of the Russians with a top two pick unless someone offered a boatload to trade down.
January 13th, 2012 at 5:58 PM

If you watch Smith from the start, he does slide his grip down as if to feint a poke check, then pulls it back up as Z approaches. Then in the slow-mo you can see him kick out his right leg to try to catch the post and stop his slide out of the net, but misses.
So he did try, but it’s not easy to stop a slide, even for the small distance he needed to get a toe on it.

No Gilbert, Eberle, RNH until after the all-star break. The timeline on Barbar.. er Whitney is weeks not days. Hall is a joy to watch, doing his best to carry the team offensively. At least I’ll have a team to watch in the playoffs when they trade Hemsky for 50 cents on the dollar.
January 13th, 2012 at 6:05 PM
If he goes for that price, I hope the Leafs are in on it. I think he’d do very well on a line with Grabovski. Also, would love to see you cheering on the Leafs. I’ll send you a t-shirt to wear while watching the Leafs 4-7 playoff games.

Manoman, that was a sweet move. I love that about shootouts, where creativity comes to the fore.

I will disown you if you do that Geez!
