Will the New NBC Sports Network Aggressively Pursue ESPN’s Scott Van Pelt?
As you’ve been hearing for months, the new NBC Sports Network is poised to challenge ESPN. Certainly not in 2012, or even next year, but that appears to be the lofty goal 5-10 years from now. What’s the best way to immediately get in the discussion? Steal a big name from your would-be competitor. In 2003, the nascent NFL Network went in and grabbed ESPN’s Rich Eisen to become the face of the channel.
Might the NBC Sports Network try to do the same by hiring ESPN’s Scott Van Pelt?
That’s the rumor in media circles. One source says NBC is prepared to put the full court press on Van Pelt in the coming months. (His ESPN contract is up at the end of April.) Another source says ESPN is already bracing for the tug-of-war. I briefly spoke to Van Pelt this morning and he said that he has not talked to NBC.
The marriage makes sense on multiple levels: He’s one of ESPN’s best Sportscenter hosts, has a radio show that is very attractive to the young male demographic, and he especially excels on golf, which NBC has plenty of (plus the Golf Channel). How about Van Pelt and Bob Costas hosting the Olympics?
It’s too early to tell whether or not Van Pelt will listen and then pass on the offer – like Chris Berman and the NFL Network – or be added to this list. I suspect we’ll be hearing plenty more on the Van Pelt front in the coming months.

I kind of figured at this point you would have given up on persuing Van Pelt rumors.
January 12th, 2012 at 1:52 PM
Costas needs to be banned from television.
January 12th, 2012 at 1:52 PM
I heard a rumor that this guy ducked a question about his sexuality. I also heard that the guy that asked had a vast clibrary of celebrity penis pics on his computer.
January 12th, 2012 at 1:53 PM
A clibrary is a library of clitoris pictures. I was briefly confused.

I think SVP had a bad exit from the Golf Channel during his first run there if I’m not mistaken. Agree he’d be a solid fit for the golf stuff but not much else.
Rich Eisen left to go be the face of the NFL Network. The NFL is obviously huge. SVP would head to NBCSN to do golf but their other primary sport is hockey. With his radio show as my only barometer, I don’t think SVP has an immense interest in hockey.
If they wanted to grab a big name from ESPN, I’d say go after Steve Levy.
January 12th, 2012 at 1:54 PM
dirt: if you haven’t read SVP’s roast of Daulerio over at Deadspin, he did pretty well with the whole gay thing. I laughed.
January 12th, 2012 at 1:55 PM
That’s the rumor in media circles.
Is there a link to these media circles?
January 12th, 2012 at 1:59 PM
SVP > just about every other host at ESPN
January 12th, 2012 at 2:00 PM
anyone seen pics of his wife? he just got married near the end of last year. i haven’t seen any yet.
January 12th, 2012 at 2:00 PM
SVP is not a great fit there. He has a strong appeal among a certain demographic (amoral youths), and he is entertaining, but I don’t think he has broad appeal – unless he were to develop a bit more character. Why not just get Dan Patrick to crossover?
Hatred of Costas by some (including an above poster) not withstanding, he still is a great host who appeals to a broad demographic – including the baby boom generation.

I’m a John Anderson supporter
/He’s from ‘Sconsin, I’m from ‘Sconsin
January 12th, 2012 at 2:00 PM
SVP is easily the best, most intelligent voice the four letter has on the radio side and I’d watch him anywhere he goes. NBC seems like a good fit.
January 12th, 2012 at 2:02 PM
yes, no, maybe
January 12th, 2012 at 2:03 PM
He’s great on Wipeout.

Itchy, Scratchy, Itchy, Itchy, Scratchy
Itchy, Scratchy, Itchy, Itchy, Scratchy
From the day you are born in the alley
To the day you are hit by a car
There’s cream to drink
And mice to eat
And great big balls of yarn
It’s the circle…
The circle of…knife.

You sure about that? Not saying you’re wrong, just don’t remember hearing it or seeing him with a ring on his left hand.
January 12th, 2012 at 2:07 PM
Soo glad that didn’t happen.
January 12th, 2012 at 2:09 PM
What about Buccigross?
January 12th, 2012 at 2:10 PM
BRING BACK GARY THORNE AND BILL CLEMENT GOD DAMN IT!
January 12th, 2012 at 2:12 PM
You look for this?
January 12th, 2012 at 2:13 PM
He’d be solid too. He would appeal to the same demos as SVP. His video blog is pretty solid, especially for an ESPNer. Bucci seems to be interested in baseball pretty heavily too. I wonder if that would deter him since NBC has nothing in baseball.
Just please leave Barry Melrose and the four letter place. I used to like Barry’s schtick but man is it old now.

“Hearing rumblings that you might be going to Versus 2.0, care to comment? Also, are you a gay?
January 12th, 2012 at 2:16 PM
I wonder what Bill Clement is doing these days.
January 12th, 2012 at 2:18 PM
Costas needs to be banned from television.
Quick, someone steal his booster seat! That should keep him off air for awhile.
January 12th, 2012 at 2:19 PM
He MC’d the Broad Street Bullies segment at the Winter Classic.

So was…
FSN’s first reboot
Versus
FSN’s second reboot
Comcast Sports Network
No one is doing it, and if you think Scott Van Pelt is leading the charge…
Nevermind, this isn’t worth it.
January 12th, 2012 at 2:22 PM
SVP would be the perfect host host of NBC Sports Talk. Ross Thayer is, meh.

What were thoughts on Lost?
January 12th, 2012 at 2:22 PM
I really hope this NBC sports thing lasts. I need a espn alternative.
January 12th, 2012 at 2:22 PM
Studio work for CSNPhilly for Flyers games and does color commentary during games when Keith Jones is doing NBCSN games.
January 12th, 2012 at 2:23 PM
Thorne signed a deal with CBS’ allegedly existent sports network last year.
But he’s a hero for the Schilling thing.
January 12th, 2012 at 2:23 PM
Nobody will challenge ESPN until they land contracts that broadcast live sports that the betting public has a large interest in… NFL, CBB, CFB, NBA, etc. They have hockey, which is a nice start, but that’s it.
January 12th, 2012 at 2:24 PM
Also, SVP might be a better fit for CBS Sports Network. Like Jim Rome and Tim Brando, SVP could also bring his radio show to Yahoo! Radio and simulcast it on CBS Sports Net.
January 12th, 2012 at 2:25 PM
the network is not new. They just re-branded VS.
January 12th, 2012 at 2:26 PM
Here is what will happen. NBC Sports will come in guns a blazin.
They’ll lock down a couple things from ESPN. Like the new Big East TV contract. After that, ESPN will look at them with that cocksmack attitude, and outspend NBC/Comcast from here on out. Why? Because they’re owned by Disney, who owns the fucking world and can out spend everyone except the Catholic Church (nods at Sparty)
January 12th, 2012 at 2:26 PM
SNF, golf, olympics
January 12th, 2012 at 2:28 PM
That’s because he’s a UMd grad.
/Me too.
//Fear the Turt… Fuck that. Fire Kevin Anderson and Randy Edsall NOW!!! What an absolute shit show these two assclowns are putting on.
///What was I saying again??
January 12th, 2012 at 2:29 PM
There are plenty of alternatives. CBS Sports Net, NBC Sports Net, Big Ten Network, NFL Network, MLB Network, NHL Network.
Not sure why people whine about BSPN any longer? Use your thumb.
Only time I watch it is for live games (sans College Gameday).
January 12th, 2012 at 2:29 PM
SNF, golf, olympics
Do people who don’t play golf, watch golf? Or bet on it? I’m sure some do, but I don’t think it’s a huge ratings grab. Also, it only has 1 of the majors, right? (US Open). The others are on ESPN/ABC or CBS. The olympics take place every two years for two weeks. You’re right, I did forget about SNF… but that’s one game a week.
January 12th, 2012 at 2:29 PM
Only the Olympics will be on NBC Sports Network. I can’t see them taking coverage from the Golf Channel.
January 12th, 2012 at 2:30 PM
your Orlando is showing, Trey.
January 12th, 2012 at 2:31 PM
Bingo! They already have Notre Dame sports.
Doesn’t NBC Sports already have Mountain West football?
January 12th, 2012 at 2:32 PM
I’m in your boat, I’ve watched ESPN for non Gameday/Live events maybe twice in the last 6 months.
Being honest, it has made football season much better (I don’t listen to sports radio either), because you don’t have all the bullshit overbearing analysis and coverage. I get my sports news from the paper, the net, and Robin Meade.
January 12th, 2012 at 2:33 PM
The Lacoste polo is not weak gear
January 12th, 2012 at 2:36 PM
Does it really matter what sports NBC has a right to broadcast? If NBCSN wants to having a show to rival SportsCenter – they’ll need a host that can bring viewers. SVP seems like the perfect candidate. They can show highlights of all sports, just like ESPN.
January 12th, 2012 at 2:38 PM
There are plenty of alternatives. CBS Sports Net, NBC Sports Net, Big Ten Network, NFL Network, MLB Network, NHL Network.
yeah, i know that. i just dont want to pay extra on an already huge cable bill to get sports highlights.
January 12th, 2012 at 2:39 PM
A goal that will fail.
January 12th, 2012 at 2:48 PM
the point isn’t that golf gets good ratings, it’s built-in loyal audience is there week in and week out. what it lacks in power, it makes up for with consistency. even then ratings were way up in 2011.
and NBC only has the US open, but they also have the ryder and presidents cups, the fedex cup, the players and a few of the WGC’s.

Can’t say I get any sports news from Robin Meade, but it sounds kinky.

Johnny Miller’s a cock though. There’s no debate here.
January 12th, 2012 at 3:29 PM
NBC Sports showed some college football over the fall (third tier Pac 12 and whatever conference TCU is in) and is showing come WCHA college hockey this weekend. I think they are also going to show some MLS games in the summer.
I kind of like their sports show at 5pm. The guests and analysts dont yell at you like they do at ESPN. NBCSN also showed this cool documentary last weekend about some USSR/Canada hockey series that happened in the 70′s. If they have more content like that, I would be happy.
January 12th, 2012 at 3:56 PM
Was it one of them that told you DHo wasn’t leaving Orlando? Because like I told you months ago, he will wind up in LA.
January 12th, 2012 at 4:26 PM
“You know, I’m really in the mood to listen to some sports talk right now! What network is Scott Van Pelt on?” – No one
January 12th, 2012 at 5:38 PM
Late to the party here but any votes for Lima? I don’t have to time to read all these.
