In Search of Jeff Fisher: the Dolphins and Rams are Still Waiting on a Coach
The news leaked last week that Fisher was likely considering Miami, but was interviewing in St. Louis. Then, over the weekend, Jay Glazer said Fisher was about to take the Rams job, according to Glazer, “within the next 24-48 hours.” Over those 2 days, instead, we heard reservations that Fisher has over whether the Rams will relocate.
So what is going on? During this time, Kansas City and Jacksonville have hired new coaches, Oakland has entered the coaching market (I doubt there is any interest there from either side), and Indianapolis has officially hired a new GM, Ryan Grigson. The suspicion here is that the sources were all emanating from the Fisher camp, not the teams, and were designed to put pressure to increase the bidding, even as no decision was reached. The other option, or one in conjunction with that, is Fisher is trying to hold out to see if the Colts and the first overall pick are interested now that the new GM is in place.
The National Football Post reported that Fisher could be in line to make upwards of 8 million per year with the Dolphins and get the title of Executive Vice President, with authority over GM Jeff Ireland. Pardon me, but if there was any doubt, if these reports are true, Dolphins owner Stephen Ross is a fool. Fisher isn’t the second coming of Don Shula plus Bill Walsh. He is a coach that is safe and stable, but has made the playoffs a league average amount of times in his career. If that is true, though, the Rams would be the winners by moving on. If it is just another planted leak, even if untrue, from the Fisher camp to increase an offer from St. Louis, they should probably move on anyway. Let him enjoy his big retirement paycheck and under .500 record in South Beach.

“Because anytime I have a chance to overpay a guy who had 6 winning seasons in 16 years, I just gotta do it.”
–Stephen Ross (not Jeffrey)

Any man who the public has never seen clean shaven is good in my book. I always liked goatee Jeff Fisher.
January 12th, 2012 at 2:37 PM
+8 wins and 8 losses
January 12th, 2012 at 2:37 PM
What. A. Title.
January 12th, 2012 at 2:39 PM
Whaaa??? What has Fisher done to show he deserves any of that? Sign Marty Schottenheimer for a 1/3 of the price and get the same results.
January 12th, 2012 at 2:39 PM
If there was ever a coach you can count on to run the clock out down 10 late in the 4th quarter trying to score a touchdown, instead of the quick FG and onside, it is Fisher.
January 12th, 2012 at 2:41 PM
Brian Billick just went out and killed 8 million puppies after reading this.
Schottenheimer (2 losing seasons in 22…! one a 7-9 effort) would have done the same, but he read this in a comfy chair, and didn’t feel like getting up.
January 12th, 2012 at 2:43 PM
He gave Michigan so much money they named their business school after him. I doubt overpaying a few million a year is going to kill him.
January 12th, 2012 at 2:45 PM
so what you’re saying is he has no problem giving a ton of money to things that don’t win at football all that often. got it.
January 12th, 2012 at 2:45 PM
I am surprised he doesn’t get more offers for teams looking at retreads.
January 12th, 2012 at 2:45 PM
I doubt overpaying a few million a year is going to kill him.
Of course not. He’s not short on cash. Doesn’t make the decision any less dumb.

The headline writer for TBL is on fire. Who needs a copy editor anyway?
January 12th, 2012 at 2:46 PM

Him and Gruden have nearly identical resumes, don’t they? Gruden gets all the love though. Odd.

I guess I’m missing the correlation between a top rated business program and a football team that won a BCS game this season…
January 12th, 2012 at 2:47 PM
-1 yard in the Super Bowl
January 12th, 2012 at 2:47 PM
I think he is the only one the Bucs haven’t interviewed.
January 12th, 2012 at 2:48 PM
Maybe Steven Ross is Mcnair’s killer and this is a slow play to get Jeff Fisher in Miami
January 12th, 2012 at 2:48 PM
Browns next in line for a donation?
January 12th, 2012 at 2:48 PM
Ballin’ was horrible today. Somebody get JMac away from the controls and put Lisk in charge. Like Spiers taking over for Lt. Dyke in Band of Brothers.
January 12th, 2012 at 2:48 PM
sorry for the title error. I went to add the excerpt and I guess it highlighted the title so when I hit delete it removed it. Didn’t realize it when I updated post.
January 12th, 2012 at 2:49 PM
Billick and Gruden would make for a great Celebrity Death Match.
January 12th, 2012 at 2:49 PM
F is for Fisher
January 12th, 2012 at 2:49 PM
As a Bills fan, I’ve always hated this twat b/c, the season after the Music City Forward Lateral, the Titans season opener was at Buffalo Sunday night. Fisher chose to announce his special teams rather than offense or defense, just to be a dick. Thank God the Bills won that game (behind the magical right arm of Alex Van Pelt!)
Not only is he overrated, but he rocked a mullet well into the 21 century.
January 12th, 2012 at 2:49 PM
I think ATL_Badger was referring to Billick, not Fisher. But really, they are all the same guy at this point, none of which I would give FO power AND $8 million a year to.
January 12th, 2012 at 2:50 PM
my joke failed, i admit it.
please…our trust fund baby owner is currently paying three GM’s and three coaches. he has no problem lighting money on fire.

I think ATL_Badger was referring to Billick, not Fisher.
Yep. Thanks, I was a little lost on the -1 yard reference.
January 12th, 2012 at 2:51 PM
Upon additional reverse engineering of the quoting…you are correct.
January 12th, 2012 at 2:51 PM
main difference is that Billick is actually enjoyable as an announcer.
January 12th, 2012 at 2:51 PM
BBOB approves.
January 12th, 2012 at 2:52 PM

agreed. Gruden probably makes 10X what Billick makes doing that too though.

That’s a typo.

January 12th, 2012 at 2:56 PM
Not sure why Atlanta wouldn’t offer Billick a ton of money to be their OC if he’s not getting offers for HC gigs. Couldn’t be any worse than what they had last year, and that guy parlayed that into Jacksonville’s HC job. LOLUARS.
January 12th, 2012 at 2:57 PM
…god damnit.

January 12th, 2012 at 2:59 PM
The continuous recycling of NFL Head coaches/coordinators that have failed miserably elsewhere really perplexes me.
I guess it’s a result of them building relationships with guys that will go on to be guys that can hire them later?
January 12th, 2012 at 3:01 PM
GO BACK TO RUSSIA!
Fisher needs to hold his own Decision special on ESPN (Jim Grey could use the work)…opportunity is there for a “taking my talents to South Beach”, it’s a perfect match

If he can turn Gabbert into 3/4′s of Matt Ryan I’ll be quite content.

Oh I would give an up and coming coordinator a shot for cheap before I would hire Billick… but I’m just confused as to why he’s not getting any offers, as regurgitation seems to be the MO for a lot of NFL owners.
January 12th, 2012 at 3:07 PM
Mat Rya?
January 12th, 2012 at 3:07 PM
if it means keeping guys like Mike Tice employed in the O.C. position by the Bears, I am all for it.
January 12th, 2012 at 3:08 PM

So you want Gabbert throwing 3-yard check downs as opposed to Ryan’s 4? I think he can help you out with that.
January 12th, 2012 at 3:08 PM
He’s a coach still living in the 90′s. He wants to run the ball and play possession in a league where scoring 30 is paramount. Good luck with that.

It’s like he was born to Coach the Dolphins.
/actually, come to think of it, I think he was in Miami before Atlanta, no?

honestly, so many teams are trying to air it out, that approach might just be the perfect antidote.
January 12th, 2012 at 3:12 PM
With the offense he’s inheriting in Jacksonville, that’s likely to be his only option for a while.

You need a beastly OL. I know nothing of Jax, but do they have that? I know they have the RB, but they also have the worst set of WRs (or close to it) in the league. You need to score points. Look at NE, GB, NO, NYG. They all have okay-to-crappy defenses, but they are so good on offense that they can render that point relatively moot.
January 12th, 2012 at 3:14 PM
and baltimore, SF and denver do the opposite.
and, somehow, houston has both a great O and D…at least after last weekend.
January 12th, 2012 at 3:19 PM
way to breathe, no breath.
January 12th, 2012 at 3:19 PM
The Giants at least have an elite d-line to go with their dumpster fire secondary.
Seriously, someone talk me out of picking Houston. JHS almost did it yesterday by reminding me of TJ Yates, but Joe Flacco is still crappy, right? right?

houston to win, or cover the spread? we arent winning, but i dont think we will lose by more than 9.
January 12th, 2012 at 3:23 PM

No.
January 12th, 2012 at 3:23 PM
Denver doesn’t have an elite D or a good offense. They are an anomaly. SF is the only team who tries to win by running the ball and playing keep away. Even BAL chucks it around with the unibrow. Houston would have been my Super Bowl team had they stayed healthy this year. They had the worst year in terms of losing their studs.

I have heard professional gamblers trot out the rule that when it comes to the NFL playoffs, you only take a dog if you think they can win outright. That held true during the WC round (the only dog that covered also won).
I do want to point out that something like 87% of the bettors are taking the Saints right now. And Vegas has only just recently moved that line a 1/2 point. I think Vegas is very comfortable with the public being heavy on the Saints. Which means the niners are the smart side (the Vegas side) to be on. It’s just very hard to back Alex Smith v. Drew Brees.
