BCS Championship Ratings: Ugly, Boring, Alabama Shutout of LSU Delivers Only a 13.8
The overnight ratings are in from Monday’s lackluster BCS Title game, and the early verdict: Rematch + no offense + shutout + all-SEC game = a 13.8 rating. Yuck. My prediction was way off. Not surprisingly, the game was a hit regionally – Oklahoma City, Nashville and Atlanta were the biggest non-game markets. Did the Northeast or the West Coast care? That remains to be seen. USC Matt Barkley watched, but wasn’t impressed.
Best I can tell, it appears that the lowest-rated BCS title game ever was USC vs. Oklahoma in 2005. The Trojans won, 66-17, and the game drew a paltry 13.7 rating. So Alabama-LSU would now be the 2nd lowest-rated BCS title game.

I watched on the I-Pad while the wife watched the Bachelor, wonder if that counts towards ratings.
January 10th, 2012 at 10:24 AM
Would love to see the 1st half vs 2nd half splits.
January 10th, 2012 at 10:25 AM
Awesome. I love this. Still seems too high for what a shit game it was, but its nice to know the BCS suffered toilet ratings.
Also, excellent trolling by the SEC last night. That “You Are Witnessing History” commercial during one of the worst big games ever was brilliant.
January 10th, 2012 at 10:25 AM
I don’t understand why they give me the feed on the Watch ESPN app but do not sell or show commercials. Bizarre business model.
January 10th, 2012 at 10:26 AM
I’ve been waiting all morning for this!!!!
January 10th, 2012 at 10:27 AM
You know what that means? They gotta cancel the BCS National Championship game.
January 10th, 2012 at 10:27 AM
Oklahoma should never have been in that game.
Team +1.
January 10th, 2012 at 10:28 AM
And?
January 10th, 2012 at 10:28 AM
after it got to be 15-0 is when I stooped watching
January 10th, 2012 at 10:28 AM
At least you’ve seen the light.
/rimshot
January 10th, 2012 at 10:29 AM
I bet USC/OU was actually pretty good in the first quarter. Then Bob Stoops did his BCS magic.
January 10th, 2012 at 10:29 AM
Seeing as how one team with a stud LB (Ariz State) waxed his ass, I can’t imagine what Bama would have done to USC with all of their talent.
January 10th, 2012 at 10:30 AM
How is that app? Is it like ESPN3 for your phone? Since I have Comcast I can’t watch it.
January 10th, 2012 at 10:30 AM
Worse contest — last year’s college title game, or this year’s mythical college football title game?
January 10th, 2012 at 10:30 AM
Wait a second. Quality matters?
January 10th, 2012 at 10:30 AM
I must’ve watched at least of this but I don’t remember it at all.
January 10th, 2012 at 10:30 AM
Nearly 9 million people watched it on the internet but you don’t care because it doesn’t fit your agenda.
January 10th, 2012 at 10:31 AM
He didn’t bet money on the ratings. Apparently he won money on ‘Bama. Which makes me want to throw up.
/ drinks on TBL tonight.
January 10th, 2012 at 10:31 AM
Hilarious.
January 10th, 2012 at 10:31 AM
Ashlee Simpson’s halftime performance didn’t help as well.
January 10th, 2012 at 10:31 AM
WHAT A COMMERCIAL FAILURE THIS SYSTEM IS
January 10th, 2012 at 10:32 AM
Do most agree that it’s really silly that we always have posts about TV ratings, or is that just me?
January 10th, 2012 at 10:32 AM
And I would love to see what a team with an offense could do to Alabama.
Its incredible that a team with one good win coming into this game is suddenly being described as one of the best ever because they beat an LSU team they already lost to six weeks after the season ended.
January 10th, 2012 at 10:32 AM
It was 55-19 and the most memorable moment from the game was Ashlee Simpson being booed at halftime
January 10th, 2012 at 10:32 AM
I guess after 37* national championships, the luster has finally worn off.
*per illformula
January 10th, 2012 at 10:32 AM
After the 3rd punt in the first quarter I think myself and half the east coast either flipped on the PS3 or changed the channel. We already saw this game back in November and didn’t really feel like watching it again.
January 10th, 2012 at 10:33 AM
/Times they are a changin’d
January 10th, 2012 at 10:33 AM
You mean a team with an offense like LSU’s?
January 10th, 2012 at 10:34 AM
n00b question: Is this the first year the title game was on ESPN? Also, it seemed like most of the people on my Twitter feed were watching the game online.
January 10th, 2012 at 10:34 AM
would a 13.8 beat anything the NBA threw out last year?
January 10th, 2012 at 10:34 AM
Put on the tape of UF playing Oklahoma. Rinse and repeat.
January 10th, 2012 at 10:34 AM
Contract Alabama!
/and the Pirates
January 10th, 2012 at 10:34 AM
not really. That dog was all bark this year.
January 10th, 2012 at 10:35 AM
YES.
January 10th, 2012 at 10:35 AM
No offense to T. Boone Pickens, but give me a break with this offense bullshit. The entire country has had 6 years to put up an offensive juggernaut to beat an SEC team in a game that really matters…and it hasn’t happened. All y’all had to do was win, baby, just once, and you wouldn’t be subjected to obnoxious SEC commercials.
January 10th, 2012 at 10:35 AM
Do most agree that it’s really silly that we always have posts about TV ratings, or is that just me?
I think the ratings game is like Jason’s stratomatic except instead of bugging his family to play the ratings game he gets to publicly talk about it on his internet
January 10th, 2012 at 10:35 AM
2nd title game on ESPN.
I don’t think anyone is saying this team is one of the best ever. People are saying that this defense is one of the best ever. Leave the straw man arguments to politicians.
January 10th, 2012 at 10:35 AM
Last year was the first…I stayed with it to the bitter end just to see if the consensus #1 team in CFB could be held to less than 100 yards, magical evening
January 10th, 2012 at 10:35 AM
would a 13.8 beat anything the NBA threw out last year?
Probably, but you can’t compare 1 game to roughly 23423556345 games.
January 10th, 2012 at 10:35 AM
It’s not silly if you want to be searchable and make some coin.
January 10th, 2012 at 10:35 AM
Nah last year was the first time. I believe last year’s was the most watched cable broadcast in history. But yeah, the system is failing.
January 10th, 2012 at 10:36 AM
If you watched LSU this year, you know that their offensive numbers are largely skewed by its defense providing short fields and them racking up points on bad defenses. Still, the majority of that loss is on Miles — terrible playcalling, terrible situation management, terrible personnel decisions.
January 10th, 2012 at 10:36 AM
How is that app? Is it like ESPN3 for your phone? Since I have Comcast I can’t watch it.
Pretty good on I-Pad, get all of the ESPN channels plus ESPN 3, no complaints on WI-FI at home
January 10th, 2012 at 10:37 AM
Who is the Nielsen family and where do they live?
January 10th, 2012 at 10:37 AM
Highest rated game in the Finals last year was 13.3 and was the third highest rated game in NBA history.
Fan interest? Through the roof.
January 10th, 2012 at 10:37 AM
I think the initial posts on this jumped the shark but now bagging on these posts has jumped the shark as well. It’s math. Too negatives make a positive. TBL, I just wish you would take this the next step – instead of trying to relate ratings to a downward opinion of the BCS, relate them to ESPN vs. ABC, add internet viewership, etc. There is substance there.
January 10th, 2012 at 10:37 AM
I said it last night and I will say it again. If your D is that good, it’s easy to hide the fact that your QB’s are very very bad.
January 10th, 2012 at 10:37 AM
/Pours one out for Leslie Nielsen
January 10th, 2012 at 10:38 AM
Oregon, Oklahoma, Ohio State (2x) and Texas were high powered offenses who were shit on. When given 40 days to prepare, a team loaded with defense has a massive advantage over a team loaded with offense. Apparently only the SEC has figured this out. The long layoff kills offenses if you have the personell on defense. Hell, look at how bad Cam Newton was against Oregon. When you can break a team down for that long, you can figure them out.
January 10th, 2012 at 10:38 AM
Everyone hates you.
Its real easy to keep winning championships when the system allows you to avoid playing teams with offenses. You really think OSU couldn’t have hung with that LSU team that showed up last night?
Also, an SEC team lost in a title game last night.
January 10th, 2012 at 10:39 AM
I was passed out asleep by the end of the first half. Thanks, Tylenol PM and night time cough medicine!
January 10th, 2012 at 10:39 AM
With all the praise the SEC gets for NFL talent, how come neither team in championship game has had a decent QB in a long time?
January 10th, 2012 at 10:40 AM
Never seen that before, but hearing the crowd’s reaction to that made me proud to be an American.
January 10th, 2012 at 10:40 AM
Texas lost its Heisman candidate on the first drive of the game, and Oregon damn near beat Auburn.
The six week layoff is absurd. But I think it benefits a great offensive mind just as much as a great defensive mind.
January 10th, 2012 at 10:41 AM
McCarron played so well last night, though. He missed one big play with Smelley down the sideline, but other than that he was great. I’m glad someone finally realized that Matthieu is a great playmaker, but as a cover man he’s solid, not spectacular. Bama took advantage of that. They essentially avoided Claiborne all night, but they feasted on the LBs and the Honey Badger.
January 10th, 2012 at 10:41 AM
Matt Flynn is insulted by this
January 10th, 2012 at 10:41 AM
why can’t you? can’t we compare 1 game to game 6 of the nba finals?
January 10th, 2012 at 10:41 AM
I got stoned and turned it off at halftime to play GTA San Andreas and listen to the Daily Show audiobook. What a night.
January 10th, 2012 at 10:41 AM
No they don’t. Husker loves me. After re-reading that, my sarcasm didn’t come through. I was going for “SEC Guy.” In retrospect, OSU vs. Bama would have been a much better game…how could it not? Also, speaking of retrospect, OSU lost to the equivalent of Vanderbilt.
January 10th, 2012 at 10:42 AM
WHAT THE HELL?
tim tebow and sam bradford two years ago? please find me better college QB’s.
January 10th, 2012 at 10:42 AM
Stats.
January 10th, 2012 at 10:42 AM
Tell that to Oregon and Auburn last year.
January 10th, 2012 at 10:42 AM
OSU was 6-6…you’re referring to fake OSU.
January 10th, 2012 at 10:42 AM
why can’t you? can’t we compare 1 game to game 6 of the nba finals?
I was making TBL’s comment for him. These ratings posts are the worst.
January 10th, 2012 at 10:43 AM
They get highly rated guys who never seem to totally pan out for some reason. I think RGIII and Geno Smith got offers from LSU as ‘athletes’ instead of QBs, which is ironic as shit right about now.
January 10th, 2012 at 10:43 AM
But what did Oregon’s offense do? They scored 19 points, right? That has to be the fewest in the Chip Kelley era, and I suspect it was 30 points fewer than their average that year.
Cam was a decent QB, no? But I do agree with what you’re saying. The QB play in the SEC is never that of the Big 12 or Pac 12. Other than the three Mannings and maybe Stafford, the SEC doesn’t put out stud QBs.
January 10th, 2012 at 10:43 AM
Besides Krenzel?
January 10th, 2012 at 10:43 AM
For the same reason a decent % of NFL QB’s look pitiful week in and week out. The talent may not be skewed but the execution on the defensive side of the ball is far superior.
January 10th, 2012 at 10:43 AM
LSU certainly tried their hardest to make that appearance a reality.
January 10th, 2012 at 10:44 AM
I meant the SEC.
OSU deserved the spot over Alabama and probably would have won the national title game if they were given the chance. Every year, teams good enough to win the title are left out because they’re not deserving. Alabama wasn’t deserving. Anyone can win one game if given the chance. It’s all about getting the chance. OSU earned the chance more than Alabama, which is why I think all three teams should be No. 1 this morning.
January 10th, 2012 at 10:44 AM
Brad Marchand deserves to be suspended for 5 games. That hit on Salo was indefensible. And yet, Peter Chiarelli tried to defend it. Unbelievable.
/hockey!
January 10th, 2012 at 10:44 AM
we all know krenzel’s in a class of his own.
January 10th, 2012 at 10:44 AM

You forgot to include the part of my statement about NFL talent. I was going for future NFL guy.
January 10th, 2012 at 10:45 AM
Funny. Texas Tech fans calls Okie State “Xerox U” because they copy all of Ttech’s “traditions.”
January 10th, 2012 at 10:45 AM
Brad Marchand deserves to be suspended for 5 games. That hit on Salo was indefensible. And yet, Peter Chiarelli tried to defend it. Unbelievable.
Good take down of the Bruins statement.
5 games is fine with me, the continued defense of the hit is mind bottling, it was dirty as it gets.
January 10th, 2012 at 10:46 AM
Cam Newton made a lot of people look silly this past NFL season, who thought he couldn’t do it.
/including me
January 10th, 2012 at 10:46 AM
yeah, can we please stop using OSU for things that are not Ohio State?
January 10th, 2012 at 10:46 AM
I would read for this type of information. ESPN returns only so many of my e-mails. I bet they’d share a lot more information with TBL than they would with me.
The Janoff one on the Winter Classic still has me pissed off because he’s too lazy to read a proper source.
January 10th, 2012 at 10:46 AM
I agree that OKST should have been in over Bama, but I also think that either LSU or Bama would have waxed the shit out of the Pokes. Stanford was gashing OKST in the running game, but the difference was Stanford didn’t have a great defense. Both of those games scream of 34-13 or something like that. Maybe 40-13.
January 10th, 2012 at 10:47 AM
I enjoyed that link….
January 10th, 2012 at 10:47 AM
The Janoff one on the Winter Classic still has me pissed off because he’s too lazy to read a proper source.
Hell, I’m still bitter about Duffy’s SCF ratings post from last year.
January 10th, 2012 at 10:47 AM
I don’t remember Sam Bradford playing in the SEC, and Tebow’s just his own little category.
/Percy Harvin should’ve won the MVP of that championship game.
January 10th, 2012 at 10:49 AM
I thought Marchand deserved 7. The intent was clear. Carcillo got 7 for a reckless hit and because he was a previous offender however there was no intent. Not trying to be a homer (especially since I thought Carbomb deserved the 7) however I think a player that was intending to injure another should get equal or more games to a player that was reckless and not intending to hurt another player.
January 10th, 2012 at 10:50 AM
I agree….though -
1. LSU vs. 4. Stanford …. LSU 30 Stanford 24
2. Bama vs. 3 Okie State… Bama 24 Okie State 17
Champ: 1. LSU vs. 2. Bama…. Shit.
January 10th, 2012 at 10:50 AM
The SEC is like a really good wrestler in MMA. Typically dominating and control the fight, but boring as shit to watch.
Give me two guys throwing punches any day. Might not be able to beat that wrestler 1-on-1, but at least it’s entertaining.
January 10th, 2012 at 10:51 AM
But at least people would seen this play out, not just assumed it. However, Oregon sitting one spot behind Stanford and having beaten them soundly at home would have been fun to discuss.
January 10th, 2012 at 10:51 AM
If 9 million people watched on the interwebs, what kind of difference would that have made in the ratings?
January 10th, 2012 at 10:51 AM
That’s an awful stereotype busted easily by – Honey Badger, Cam, Tebow, et al.
January 10th, 2012 at 10:52 AM
No shit.
January 10th, 2012 at 10:52 AM
Another difference? The QB’s for LSU and Stanford.
January 10th, 2012 at 10:52 AM
Last ten years of BCS title game QBs before last night.
Chris Weinke
Josh Heupel
Ken Dorsey
Eric Crouch
Craig Krenzel
Jason White
Matt Mauck
Matt Leinart
Vince Young
Chris Leak
Troy Smith
Todd Boeckman
Matt Flynn
Tim Tebow
Sam Bradford
Colt McCoy
Garrett Gilbert
Greg McElroy
Cam Newton
Darron Thomas
You really want to put this last of NFL QB talent on the SEC?
January 10th, 2012 at 10:53 AM
I thought Marchand deserved 7. The intent was clear. Carcillo got 7 for a reckless hit and because he was a previous offender however there was no intent.
Not sure how you can argue intent by Marchand and not Carcillo.
Marchand ‘peeked’ so he knew Salo was coming and submarined him. Carcillo stopped moving his feet just inside the hashmarks, once he stopped skating his intent was clear – drive Gilbert through the end boards.
January 10th, 2012 at 10:53 AM
Kind of how it’s fun to discuss Okie St. missing out, or bubble team in March, or that 17th team in Wetzel’s Gay Ass Plan…there will never be a perfect system. But yes, a Final Four would be awesome…assuming there are four deserving teams which isn’t always the case.
January 10th, 2012 at 10:53 AM
I would have loved to see a real offense with NFL talent like OSUs go against Alabama’s D. Blackmon and Weeden would have given the Tide fits.
January 10th, 2012 at 10:53 AM
*lack of.
January 10th, 2012 at 10:55 AM
I don’t see whats so awful about the Marchand hit. Get rid of the instigator rule.
January 10th, 2012 at 10:55 AM
id like to put the lack of NFL QB talent on the lack of people in existence who can play the position at that level.
January 10th, 2012 at 10:55 AM
I find it hilarious that you honestly believe this. Blackmon is a stud, but it’s not like Alabama has never seen a player like him as Julio was on their team for three years. Blowout city.
January 10th, 2012 at 10:55 AM
Blackmon and Weeden are transferring to Ohio State?
January 10th, 2012 at 10:56 AM
watched the game online
January 10th, 2012 at 10:57 AM
btw, the picture quality on ESPN3 was crystal clear the entire time. this isn’t the case during the regular season.
January 10th, 2012 at 10:58 AM
I don’t see whats so awful about the Marchand hit.
See Marchment, Bryan and Samuelsson, Ulf, etc.
January 10th, 2012 at 10:58 AM
Weeden is a smart QB who makes great reads. It’s not like Alabama is fielding a team of geniuses on defense. You hear those guys speak last night? There’s a reason they’re at Alabama. Gnudy is a brilliant offensive mind with players capable of executing his schemes. Richardson would have been tough to stop, but you better believe OSU would score 24, minimum.
January 10th, 2012 at 10:58 AM
I’m pretty sure with 44 days to prepare, Blackmons impact would be minimal with the talent of the Tide secondary and linebacking core.
January 10th, 2012 at 10:59 AM
You know what we’d call Reuben Randle if he played for Ok State? All-American.
January 10th, 2012 at 10:59 AM
I’ll admit Jefferson was god awful and Bammer was dominant in D. But if you watched those sky-line shots from behind the snap, there were plenty of holes in Bama’s defense that a skilled QB and WR tandem would have annihilated. Instead, we got Screen Pass-Inside Run-Screen Pass play calling.
January 10th, 2012 at 11:00 AM
Racist. They sounded like great football players.
January 10th, 2012 at 11:00 AM
I’d like to hear QueeferSutherland’s thoughts on the upcoming movie “Red Tails.”
January 10th, 2012 at 11:01 AM
Ha ha ha aha ha ha ha ha ha.
1) Fair enough. Bama wins 30-24.
2) I took the PSAT in 10th grade and was accepted into Oklahoma State the day I showed up to take the test.
January 10th, 2012 at 11:01 AM
I remember thinking Ohio State had 0 chance to beat Miami the year they won. I hate that OSU’s kicker being 3 inches off prevented an opportunity to see another upset like that.
January 10th, 2012 at 11:01 AM
I’d like to hear QueeferSutherland’s thoughts on the upcoming movie “Red Tails.”
Best heist movie of 2012?
January 10th, 2012 at 11:02 AM
All of this.
And this.
Don’t let facts get in the way of silly arguments. Bama has 9 starters who will be drafted in the first 4 rounds of the Draft on defense alone.
January 10th, 2012 at 11:02 AM
This. So, so many missed reads and poor decisions by LSU in that game. How much of that was caused by Bama’s defense I don’t know. But they were there all game.
January 10th, 2012 at 11:03 AM
Can somebody explain this meme to me?
January 10th, 2012 at 11:03 AM
When did OK State become MIT?
January 10th, 2012 at 11:03 AM
I highly doubt Ok St’s would easily handle Bama’s pass rush like that weak ass one from Stanford. Weeden be shittin his pants.
January 10th, 2012 at 11:03 AM
Brandon Weeden = Drew Henson

TBL classifies Dark Knight as a Heist Movie.
(Instead of an obscenely overrated movie where only three supporting characters give watchable performances)

Those planes will have some sweet ass rims on the landing gear, I can tell you that much.
What? It’s for stability.
But seriously, anything with a Lucasfilm title card is dead to me these days.

Are you guys comparing Alabama and OK State academically?
Really?
January 10th, 2012 at 11:05 AM

If I remember correctly, it was a post about the movie “The Town” and in the post TBL was talking about Heist movies, and he said that The Dark Knight was the best heist movie of the year.

I thought it was that Indian porno?
/now THAT’S racist
January 10th, 2012 at 11:06 AM
That game was a steaming pile of dung. Stanford, Oregon, Oklahoma State and Wisconsin all could have hung with either of those teams.
January 10th, 2012 at 11:06 AM
Oh, that’s funny. I miss TBL’s movie posts. We used to go at it about No Country For Old Men.

I think the majority of B’s fans are fine with a suspension. It is the blatant instances of this same hit by Raymond, Ballard, etc., that is frustrating.
January 10th, 2012 at 11:07 AM
Oregon, sure. Wisky maaaaaybe.
January 10th, 2012 at 11:07 AM
This site definitely needs more movie posts. TBL is going to implode when the Tebow film gets released.

January 10th, 2012 at 11:11 AM
Goddamnit you’re on fire this week.
January 10th, 2012 at 11:11 AM
Oregon, sure. Wisky maaaaaybe.
Oregon- Wisconsin was basically a tie game until a fumble at the end.

Oregon couldn’t do shit against LSU and Bama is better on D and much better on offense.

So you’re not going to take the holiday to stay home and study the life and times of the Dr.?
Bank holiday — though with that logic I should see Red Tails.

I didn’t say beat. But hang with? Sure. Oregon’s speed and creativity could’ve gotten a few TD’s.

Oregon couldn’t do shit against LSU and Bama is better on D and much better on offense.
The team that could only muster 6 points at home is much better on offense?

Bama would have run for 300 yards against Oregon. Oregon would put up points (17-20) but do you think they would keep Bama under 30?

LSU put 40 on Oregon, so no. And that game wasn’t as close as 40-27 would suggest.

Someone is going to have to explain to me how the fuck this is a fact? You’re an idiot.

Of course no where in the post does it point out that almost every other (can’t remember if last year’s was or not) game was on free TV and now the games have been moved to a cable channel….Provide the whole story, even if it kneecaps your whole “I want a playoff so the whole country must want a playoff” campaign.
