Barcelona’s Lionel Messi Awarded His Third-Straight Ballon D’Or
Lionel Messi is your board-certified best soccer player in the world. France Football awarded the 24-year-old Argentine the 2011 Ballon D’Or, the most prestigious of the sport’s “player of the year” awards, for the third-consecutive year. The choice was so suspenseful, runner up Cristiano Ronaldo did not even show. Messi is the fourth player (Cryuff, Platini, van Basten) to win it three times. He’s the second player (Platini) to win the awards consecutively.
The award can be a popularity contest. Messi, firing salvoes for humanism with every feat of skill, would certainly win that. Though, his awards, by any measure, have been well deserved.
Messi has 31 goals and 13 assists in 28 appearances for Barcelona this season. His ongoing run of 133 goals and 47 assists in 150 appearances since the start of the 2008-09 season, as Barcelona have won three league titles and two Champions League titles, will mark him, almost undoubtedly, as soccer’s greatest of all time. Sorry, Pele.

Troll on! This event was held yesterday and Real Madrid have a Copa del Rey match starting right now. NONE of the Real Madrid representatives (CR7, Casillas, Ramos, Alonso, Mourinho) up for awards were there.

You think maybe Neymar wins this anytime soon?

Well deserved. He’ll probably win it next year too, unless Ronaldo finishes the season with more goals, Madrid win La Liga, AND he has a strong showing at the Euros.

I’d be surprised if Neymar ever won Ballon D’Or. Dude is massively overrated.

Messi did it against much MUCH better competition than Pele ever did, too.
What’s really fucking insane about Messi is this fact: he has a good chance of becoming Barcelona’s all time leading scorer this season, at age 24.

It drives ma crazy that some idiots use his performance with the national team to exclude him from “greatest ever” list. Note to you old naive idiots, international football is a novelty act now. Modern footballer should only be judged by their club performance

Can’t wait for Messi to win a World Cup so everyone can finally tell Pele to shut the fuck up.
January 10th, 2012 at 4:18 PM
It won’t shut him up. Pele is the most ego-maniacal athlete in the history of athletes. Cases can be made that he isn’t even the greatest anyway. He is a complete whore and corrupt as fuck.

Also I don’t think Messi will win one. Brazil will win 2014 thanks to some good home cookin’, and I think the Argies are going to get passed by Uruguay in the region anyway, then Germany is going to win 2018 and Messi will be retired by 2022.

God damn legend. One of the all time greats for sure.

I don’t think so either, but I bet the AFA knows that 2014 is their only real shot in the foreseeable future. They’ll have their suitcases of cash ready…

What a douchebag.

Wrong. See Comment #1.
January 10th, 2012 at 4:33 PM
Well he’s not wrong, just not related to that reason.
January 10th, 2012 at 4:36 PM
Nobody reads the comments. Plus, it doesn’t fit the CR7 diva narrative.

Semantics.

and he’s still only 24. if all goes well, we still have over a decade ahead of us of the enjoyment of watching him play.
is it possible for anybody in the epl to “overpay” for him at this point? according to my googling, he has a $368 million buyout on his current contract w/ barcelona…
