Dwight Howard Still Wants to Be Traded, in Case You Forgot
Dwight Howard trade scuttlebutt evaporated once the Clippers acquired Chris Paul and Brook Lopez got hurt, but don’t worry, the best center in the NBA still wants out of Orlando. Howard said as much before the Magic beat the Kings Sunday, and then the team’s GM, Otis Smith, added this:
“I think his leaving or going has nothing to do with Orlando. I think he wants a bigger market. I can’t do anything about that.”
Reminder: Howard will only be traded to three teams – the Mavericks, Lakers or Nets. There’s really no scenario that could get Howard to the Lakers, unless they want to part with Bynum and Gasol in a 3-team deal; the Nets are 2-7 and may not be able to put together a lucrative enough package to get Howard (who wants a dinged-up Lopez?); and the Mavericks have absolutely nothing to offer the Magic, unless Orlando wants to get considerably older.
The Golden State Warriors are intriguing, but it appears as if Howard wants nothing to do with the Bay Area.
What Otis Smith needs to do is find a major-market team willing to part with a lot of good, young parts – think Knicks-Nuggets for Melo – but unfortunately, that combination might not exist. What about the Bulls? Would Howard want to partner with Derrick Rose? Would the Magic accept Joakim Noah, Luol Deng and Taj Gibson, or something along those lines?
What about the Thunder? Is Oklahoma City too rural for Howard? What if the Thunder offered Westbrook, Kendrick Perkins and someone else? Howard could have a summer residence in LA or New York, and let’s be realistic, he’s traveling so much from November to June, to hate OKC that badly.

This is the key for the Warriors:
“The Warriors think they can sell Howard on the endorsement possibilities of a global NBA star in Silicon Valley. From tech companies to social media, Golden State thinks Howard would find an untapped market, as well as a nod from Adidas, who is preparing a new deal for him. And the bottom line is this: Should Golden State make a deal for Howard, he would have to take $30 million less over the length of a contract extension to leave this summer.”
Also…where did you get this: “but it appears as if Howard wants nothing to do with the Bay Area.” Is this just based on him not adding GSW to his list?

Such a humble down to earth Christian.
January 9th, 2012 at 1:52 PM
The first time I saw cocaine was in Orlando, so there’s that
January 9th, 2012 at 1:52 PM
He needs a larger market to affect his goal of adding a cross to the NBA logo. Seems reasonable.
January 9th, 2012 at 1:53 PM
If he still only has Dallas, NJ and LA on his landing spots then Dwight Howard doesn’t really want to be traded.
January 9th, 2012 at 1:54 PM
Dwight Howard’s attempts to make his trade request relevant news is kind of funny. Major Decision envy. And it looks like he’s hired TBL as his PR guy.
Hipster Dwight in BK? Best move for Orlando is to ship him to GSW. Hear that the Dubs are willing to pull the trigger even without an extension signed. Think they have to do it, especially if they can trick Otis Smith into taking David Lee.

Babar… I would love to see him come out here but I think our 9.25% state tax, high income tax and sky high cost of living turns off most athletes from coming here. But I do agree that he would be an instant marketing star out here in the market.
January 9th, 2012 at 1:56 PM
There is only one black jesus. And he is already in a large market.
January 9th, 2012 at 1:57 PM
Can we get an “Imagine if Tim Tebow was black?” post — that actually could be quite fascinating

Cuban is likely to try something as this team aged 5 years over the offseason and isn’t close to competing so far this year. I suppose you could bring in a 3rd team and dangle Dirk, but I can’t see it happening.
Howard should really take a hard look at GSW.

Why you don’t want to come to Chicago, outside of your immense ego being crush by the weight of playing on “Derrick Rose’s team,” I have no idea D12. Chicago instantly has a comparable big 3 with Miami and that’s including Boozer as one of the three.

Cost of living doesn’t affect these guys…the tax thing is big. They really have to push the silicon valley thing. Also a downtown SF arena may be attractive as well.
January 9th, 2012 at 2:00 PM
Burger King?
January 9th, 2012 at 2:00 PM
Otis Smith is one dumb fuck.
Some team should gamble on a Dwight Rental.
January 9th, 2012 at 2:01 PM
The OKC is the one that makes the most sense for all parties involved, IMO. Though Howard would have to do the small market thing and possibly be the #2 guy, I think they’d be the class of the Western Conference for the immediate future.
Will never happen though.
January 9th, 2012 at 2:02 PM
Then he would be a Southern Baptist.
January 9th, 2012 at 2:03 PM
They’re looking hard at the spot across from AT&T Park, that would be awesome.
January 9th, 2012 at 2:04 PM
he’s traveling so much from November to June, to hate OKC that badly.
I agree with this sentiment — I think NBA players are on the road more than any other league (that or NHL), what does it really matter. It’s not like you are going out the night before games anyways.
January 9th, 2012 at 2:05 PM
Atlanta? (Josh Smith)
Philly? (not sure they’d part with any of the valuable young guys)
Indiana? (George)
Denver? (pieces and picks)
PHX? (Lopez/Gortat + others)
January 9th, 2012 at 2:08 PM
Can we get an “Imagine if Tim Tebow was black?” post
Well, I found this to be more retarded.
I’m not calling you a retard, just the whole premise of “what if he were….”
January 9th, 2012 at 2:09 PM
Atlanta definitely should. Teague and Horford for Dwight might get it done (not sure about money matching up). I don’t know if Atlanta + Dwight – Teaugue – Horford would do much damage in the playoffs, but if they could convince him to sign long term, they’d have time to build.
January 9th, 2012 at 2:11 PM
I’m not calling you a retard, just the whole premise of “what if he were….”
I gotcha — the “What If Vick were white?” post gave me a chuckle, and the picture was beyond bizarre.
January 9th, 2012 at 2:12 PM
Sure, take one part Vince Young and simmer over high heat until all of the images of topless clubbing with other men and tequilla cooks off, add in a splash of Reggie White and presto….Black Tebow
January 9th, 2012 at 2:12 PM
As much as I would love to see Gortat used in a trade to acquire Howard from Orlando(Irish then kills himself), none of those make sense. You are right that OKC is the one that makes sense but it will never happen. I will be really curious to see what Dwights plan is if he doesn’t get traded.
January 9th, 2012 at 2:13 PM
I was thinking of it in terms of a one-year rental not a long term deal.
January 9th, 2012 at 2:15 PM
Lakers or Dallas.
January 9th, 2012 at 2:15 PM
I don’t think there’s any chance of Orlando holding on to him. It just doesn’t make any sense to keep him and lose him for free. I would think they’d take the best offer on the table come deadline time.
January 9th, 2012 at 2:15 PM
As someone who has seen Carmelo Anthony, JR Smith, Chris Anderson, and Kenyon Martin throwing down at Denver bars and clubs on multiple occasions I can tell you that this is completely false.
January 9th, 2012 at 2:15 PM
ure, take one part Vince Young and simmer over high heat until all of the images of topless clubbing with other men and tequilla cooks off, add in a splash of Reggie White and presto….Black Tebow
We have a winner.
January 9th, 2012 at 2:17 PM
Chris Anderson
It’s time for the birdman to fly
January 9th, 2012 at 2:18 PM
I know. I just think Phoenix would rather have Gortat going forward than 40 games of Dwight. I guess I could see the Atlanta thing because maybe I could see them doing some damage in the playoffs but I don’t think Phoenix with a 40 game rental of Dwight is going to do much of anything in the playoffs same with those other teams.
I just think if you are going to give up enough to make Otis Smith bite you really have to be sure you can make a title run this year.
January 9th, 2012 at 2:21 PM
your technique was flawless.
January 9th, 2012 at 2:22 PM
He’d be A.C. Green.
January 9th, 2012 at 2:23 PM
Adding Dwight would make the Sixers the best defensive team in the NBA.
January 9th, 2012 at 2:29 PM
yet he wants to go play with Deron Williams?
January 9th, 2012 at 2:30 PM
Oh come on. AC was good.
January 9th, 2012 at 2:30 PM
He’d be a 3rd down back.
January 9th, 2012 at 2:31 PM
lolleraycess
January 9th, 2012 at 2:33 PM
Somebody needs to sell Dwight on the opportunity to put up “Wilt” offensive rebounding numbers with all the bricks Rose throws up.
January 9th, 2012 at 2:34 PM
Well played.
January 9th, 2012 at 2:34 PM
But he’d have wild cat packages, because he is such an “athlete”
/Also categorized as “well spoken”
January 9th, 2012 at 2:35 PM
By far the worse offender. Nobody in Denver was surprised when that dude was busted for drugs. However, in the spirit of fair play let it be known that the basketball players are not the only guys partying. I also came across the following…..
Broncos:
Champ Bailey – It was only a matter of time before he got divorced. ladies love Champ.
Al Wilson – Dude used to jump behind the bar and serve at a place called 5 Degrees. Al was the man.
Avs:
Paul Stastny and John Michael Liles
Dan Hinote – Probably slept with half the women in Denver in the early 2000′s
Never really came across any Rockies, homebodies I guess although I did see Tulo and Spillboroughs during the Nuggets/Lakers western conference finals games.
/I miss being 25
January 9th, 2012 at 2:36 PM
Or Terrelle Pryor
January 9th, 2012 at 2:50 PM
Now that’s a story that completely went away when the season started.
January 9th, 2012 at 2:57 PM
I laughed.
January 9th, 2012 at 3:00 PM
Same could be said about OKC seeing as Durant has one setting. Shoot.
January 9th, 2012 at 3:36 PM
i hate it when guys who make half the shots they take and score 26ppg
January 9th, 2012 at 3:47 PM
No rebounds on made shots, so I guess that’s a strike against Durant. He needs to be more selfless like Rose, and pad team mates rebounding numbers.
January 9th, 2012 at 5:18 PM
This is asinine. He’ll be a Laker either by the deadline or after the season for free. Newsflash pal, the Lakers ain’t giving up Bynum AND Gasol either.
