Jim Rome’s ESPN Contract is Up, and He’s Taking His TV Show to the CBS Sports Network [UPDATE]
Sources tell me that ESPN has decided not to renew the TV contract of “Jim Rome is Burning,” and the show will be ending its 8-year run (there was a brief hiatus in 2004) at the Worldwide Leader this month.
[UPDATE: An ESPN source writes in to say that Rome was presented with a multi-year offer to return to the network, but he did not accept it.]
But the show will go on. Just on a different network. Two sources say that “Jim Rome is Burning” will move over to the burgeoning CBS Sports Network. Both sources claim Rome will have an expanded role at the network beyond the show. What that role is remains unclear. I emailed Rome this morning, but he declined to comment.
I didn’t even go to CBS for comment because they’re unhappy I broke the Jon Heyman news last month. They won’t confirm anything to me. Apparently, CBS has a big Jim Rome announcement planned in the near future.
Some media observers believe ESPN has jerked around “Jim Rome is Burning” over the last year. It has shifted timeslots and channels in the last 6-12 months, and hasn’t been nearly as heavily promoted as the network’s new shows, “Numbers Never Lie” and “Dan LeBatard is Highly Questionable.”

The what? Where is this?
January 6th, 2012 at 1:59 PM
Hopefully some TV abyss where we’ll never have to hear his crap ever again.
January 6th, 2012 at 2:02 PM
Did i read somewhere the other day that Rome is pulling in like $4 mil a year from ESPN?
January 6th, 2012 at 2:02 PM
I haven’t listened to Jim Rome…. since………
January 6th, 2012 at 2:02 PM
I imagine you let out a big ol’ “Ahhhhhhhh yup!” and played with your suspenders after you typed that. Anyhow, I have never liked Rome. His phony tough guy, I gotta talk with this fake raspy voice, bullshit act has always irritated me.
January 6th, 2012 at 2:04 PM
I like JRIB. There, I said it. I even like his radio show. Is he smug? Asbolutely. Does he keep repeating a lot of the same schtick over and over? Yep. The man reminds me of my older brother and his penchant for making fun of things, so I guess I’m sucker.
Sincerely…
That’s from ‘Heldover in The Lou’

Jon fucking Heyman? Does anybody care who he’s employed by?
January 6th, 2012 at 2:05 PM
I like to equate Jim Rome with Jay Marrioti on my list of sports “journalists” who have been on TV that I dislike the most.
January 6th, 2012 at 2:06 PM
Ah Rome and Heyman. Two people I never watch or listen to. (Heyman has me blocked on Twitter and I am so proud of that)
January 6th, 2012 at 2:06 PM
That’s a sports subsidiary of Current right?
January 6th, 2012 at 2:06 PM
I am more worried about who Paul Heyman is employed by.

I liked Rome better when he was John C McGinley in Any Given Sunday.
January 6th, 2012 at 2:07 PM
I second this.
This is what bugs me most about him (other than the staged phone calls from “listeners”). He just won’t let something go and repeats the exact same thing over and over. He’s not a bad interviewer from what I’ve seen, but that’s about it.
January 6th, 2012 at 2:09 PM
curling is still the shizz. dont ever forget that. I’d be playing on the interwebs but life got in the way
January 6th, 2012 at 2:09 PM

Good job interjecting yourself into the story, TBL.
January 6th, 2012 at 2:09 PM
I think it used to be the CBS College Sports Network. It’s usually grouped with the NHL and MLB networks.
January 6th, 2012 at 2:10 PM
I prefer to look at the bigger picture witht this one…
Yay for CBS and NBC to for actually trying to compete with the Mothership. This is much needed.
January 6th, 2012 at 2:10 PM
Jim Rome is in the facial hair HOF.
January 6th, 2012 at 2:10 PM
Versus now shows up on my cable guide as NBC Sports Network, and I immediately take it seriously and think I’m watching some new channel. Then I realize that it’s still just fucking Versus.
January 6th, 2012 at 2:10 PM
Ah yes, forgot about this.
January 6th, 2012 at 2:11 PM

Same here. NBC Sports should’ve gone after The Jungle Karma!!!
January 6th, 2012 at 2:11 PM
I don’t even think he’d make the Sports Facial Hair HOF.

Rollie Fingers has to be the first inductee.

I don’t know man, that goatee is impressive.
January 6th, 2012 at 2:14 PM
Absolutely.
Bird’s moustache
Bagwell’s goatee
January 6th, 2012 at 2:14 PM
I can’t believe people listen to this guy, honestly. I remember I was driving to Maine or something to summers ago, and I was trying to get world cup scores, and I got this jaghole on the radio for five seconds talking about how stupid soccer is, unprompted.
Off it went, back went the baby songs, and my life stayed good.

January 6th, 2012 at 2:15 PM
Don’t forget Sidney Crosby’s playoff “beard”
January 6th, 2012 at 2:16 PM
I just found this, and I’d agree with about half of them.
January 6th, 2012 at 2:16 PM
Crosby’s “beard” is pretty absurd
January 6th, 2012 at 2:17 PM
Love him or hate him, I do both depending upon the day, you can not argue that Rome is a very good interviewer.
As someone else posted, I’m shocked the new NBC Sports Network did not go hard after JRIB.
January 6th, 2012 at 2:18 PM
Take that, Woodward and Bernstein!!
January 6th, 2012 at 2:18 PM
Hmmmm….nope still not gonna listen to him..can’t do it

Wait, that was supposed to be funny, right?
January 6th, 2012 at 2:20 PM
Yes I can. Watch. I think he sucks as an interviewer..can’t remember an interview with him when I thought “Jim Rome is such a good interviewer.”
January 6th, 2012 at 2:21 PM
I’m a week older than him, and he grows one better than me. He should have taken the Malkin route, and not even attempt to grow a “beard.”
January 6th, 2012 at 2:22 PM
Agreed that Rome’s schtick is tired. He’s irrelevant at this point isn’t he? His place as our Gaucho cheerleader in sports was soon to be eclipsed by my buddy had he not jumped over to broadcast journalism.
January 6th, 2012 at 2:22 PM
It sucks that my generation sees facial hair as unfashionable. You might see a beard, or a goatee around — but no one has a mustache and if someone does it’s ironic. When I look through pictures of my dad and his friends when they were my age (early-mid 70′s) they are all rocking sweet mustaches.
January 6th, 2012 at 2:22 PM
I must confess that I listened to Jim Rome when I was in high school. I was confused and lonely. I didn’t know any better. Please don’t judge me.
January 6th, 2012 at 2:23 PM
It was well done.
January 6th, 2012 at 2:24 PM
No time to dictionary.com, so I am assuming that burgeoning now means “non-existant.” Yes?

Same thing with Pete Vukovich. Love his mustache and sideburns, but I don’t think he’d make it.
January 6th, 2012 at 2:27 PM
did he actually reply and say he didn’t want to comment? or did he just not even reply?
January 6th, 2012 at 2:28 PM

James Harden — thats all he is known for (until he makes the jump this or next year)
January 6th, 2012 at 2:30 PM
I really wanted #SPOTB to catch on for McTibble patting himself on the back.
I’ve been able to grow a pretty decent beard since high school. It’s overrated, but it was always nice cause if I wanted to go out that weekend, I could stop shaving on wednesday, and get served underage in college.

January 6th, 2012 at 2:39 PM
No, you didn’t miss anything, it was never spelled out. I just did that in my head to keep it relevant to everybody here. Or else, people would just name obscure players nobody else knew, an it would be boring.
January 6th, 2012 at 2:39 PM
I still need to make my pick’em picks this week. I just need ___ team wins by _ points. I’m about ready to go the pussy route and pick Hou/Pit/NO/Atl all by 3. Any have any gut feelings for something crazy and wants to risk my either undying affection or never-ending scorn?

This. Rome’s Redemption Song. Speaking of things that are no longer hip, is the sport of kings gonna survive? The younger generation doesn’t seem to love it like my old man, who pours over the racing form still working his “system.” Summer Friday’s at Del Mar are a hoot: gambling, hot women in sun dresses, and live music.

Why would you cut off a big toe to masturbate in her dorm room when she’s not there?
January 6th, 2012 at 3:07 PM
Yeah, I actually do that too. I hardly listen live, just download the podcast and fly thru the highlights.
January 6th, 2012 at 3:08 PM
umm, yeah, no. Visiting a site called “poon of the sec” is not SFW.
There’s no nudity chief.
January 6th, 2012 at 3:08 PM
Depends upon the body, but I’ll agree with this.
January 6th, 2012 at 3:08 PM
Those of yall who are fans of red heads, Google Heather Carolin with the Safe Search off. You won’t be sorry. The results will be NSFW.
January 6th, 2012 at 3:09 PM
WHAT?!?! You mean to tell me he did not accept the offer he declined???!?!
January 6th, 2012 at 3:10 PM
No way she beats Renee Olstead. I’m still smitten over those pictures. Disappointed that she’s moved to blonde. Her Twitter account told me so.
January 6th, 2012 at 3:11 PM
That show cracks me up, Stugotz should be brought in to do a guest post about the Jets
January 6th, 2012 at 3:11 PM
Kaiser – ive given a listen to others like Petros and Money in LA, Tim Brando and the other guys on Yahoo Sports Radio, etc. I’ve also heard so much bad local radio. On the various online radio apps, i will browse through stations across the country just to hear the dreck of local sports talk.
January 6th, 2012 at 3:11 PM
not sure if this counts since i’m only commuting 15 minutes in the morning, but i listen to mad dog radio on Sirius, I think it’s the evan and philips show. not bad.
January 6th, 2012 at 3:11 PM
olstead is the winner here.
January 6th, 2012 at 3:11 PM
also, i’d be listening to Czabe if I knew what sirius channel the sporting news network was.
January 6th, 2012 at 3:12 PM
tanks spence

Is Olstead a redhead? If so, I must have been staring at her tits too much in those pictures and missing other details.
January 6th, 2012 at 3:12 PM
Oaklawn opens in just over 2 weeks. CAN. NOT. WAIT.
Really no better way to widdle away an afternoon than spend it at the track in nice weather. I was born right next to Santa Anita and grew-up going with my folks every weekend. Loved it then, still love it now, though I’ve traded in the cotton candy and infield playground for more expensive fun.
January 6th, 2012 at 3:12 PM
Ms621, thank you for heather carolin.
/team redhead
January 6th, 2012 at 3:13 PM
sorry bro…you know i only smoke the headiest nugs of life tho.
January 6th, 2012 at 3:16 PM
Wilhelm – sirius 94 for Czaban
January 6th, 2012 at 3:17 PM
What time slot?
January 6th, 2012 at 3:17 PM
I’ve given up on local sports radio here in atlanta. Living in college football country, it’s only logical they discuss SEC ad nauseum. But not being a college fb fan, I lose interest real quick. They might talk about NFL for about 15 minutes, but other then that, it’s college fb all day every day.
And forget about discussing the NBA. Most of the sports talk shows in this town couldn’t care less about basketball. 2 live stews are big NBA fans, but I can’t listen due to their race-baiting.
January 6th, 2012 at 3:17 PM
Butters – Lebatard’s show is great because they don’t take themselves seriously and have no problem injecting reality into sports unlike the robots in bristol
January 6th, 2012 at 3:19 PM
Czaban is live 6-9 AM eastern.
I also listen to Kornheiser’s local show out of D.C.
Atlanta sports radio does suck. 2 live stews are absolute garbage. I dont know this one guy’s name but Lebatard played a tape last fall from a longtime sports host in the ATL who went apeshit on the air when someone called him a homer. It was hilariously awful
January 6th, 2012 at 3:20 PM
I really wish I could go more often. Hot Springs is 4 hours one way, and their season dates kind of suck (weather wise) so it’s tough to get down there on a nice weekend. they also only open the infield there for Derby weekend, which kind of sucks. makes hitting the smoke a little tougher, but still doable.
January 6th, 2012 at 3:21 PM
Fox Sports Radio is now on their third morning show in 3 years. they fired Czaban to get Screamin A Smith..they booted him, had a show out of Indy called Zakk and Jack…and now their morning show will be from guys in Cincinnati. FSR used to be the best national sports station but they flushed themselves down the toilet.
January 6th, 2012 at 3:22 PM
That texas A&m hottie was good but the redhead ms621 mentioned wins the day
January 6th, 2012 at 3:23 PM
late to this party, but jim rome is a spare of the highest order. the parody of him on any given sunday was brilliant.
and i cant wait to get home and google heather carolin
January 6th, 2012 at 3:23 PM
If it’s longtime host, very good chance it’s Beau Bock. Yep, that’s the name he chose for himself when he decided to become a radio host.
January 6th, 2012 at 3:25 PM
His impressions are spot on. The problem is he’s not particularly funny, and on top of that we got beat over the head with “Frank TV” promos for a few months way back when.
January 6th, 2012 at 3:28 PM
I used to love Jim Rome but then my tastes matured. Jim Rome:sports radio::smirnoff: vodka beverage
January 6th, 2012 at 3:28 PM
His 30 minute comedy central special was painful to watch. halfway thru the show, the novelty of impressions wore off on the crowd, and laughs started to die down.
January 6th, 2012 at 3:29 PM
where you at, what you haulin’?
thanks!
January 6th, 2012 at 3:32 PM
You can also get Czaban’s show via podcast. Thats how i listen to all my favorite sports radio shows other than Van Pelt and Russillo. They are the only good thing on ESPN radio. The new ESPNRadio show is going to be Mike Hill and Mark Schlereth at 7 PM. It will be awful, bet on it
January 6th, 2012 at 3:33 PM
I’ll say it, Jim Rome is funny on his radio show, sometimes. I actually enjoy the fact that he embraces the hell out of how schticky he is. Never really watched JRIB.
Have a take, don’t suck.
January 6th, 2012 at 3:36 PM
Once Travis Rogers left as Rome’s top producer, the show hit the rough road and hasn’t been as good since. Also, the new breed of dumbass callers are awful
January 6th, 2012 at 3:37 PM
this is mark schlereth, former lineman for the super bowl champion denver broncos of the national football league on the Entertainment and Sports Programming Network Radio show, Mike and Mark in the evening. You may also know me as Stink, because I liked to piss my pants on gameday to get an edge.
January 6th, 2012 at 3:38 PM

When he has time on radio to ruminate, he is tolerable. On TV, however, it just doesn’t translate. He did arguably help launch this whole genre of sports radio talk shows though…
January 6th, 2012 at 3:39 PM
listening to callers is the best part of sports radio, it’s like if NPR decided to do a broadcast reading of the ESPN comment pages.
January 6th, 2012 at 3:40 PM
Travis Rogers
T-Rodge! He does his own show now I believe?
/Gaucho Friday!
January 6th, 2012 at 3:41 PM
It’s funny. I don’t remember him being as douchey when he first joined ESPN. But now, he is just another carnival barker (h/t Richard deitsch).
By the way, can someone please explain to me what exactly is it that is so damn funny about these sports shows. Whenever I watch, they are doubling over in laughter because someone made a “joke”.
January 6th, 2012 at 3:43 PM
they’re just a bunch of guys, sitting in a circle, wearing make up and laughing at each others witty banter. like The View.
January 6th, 2012 at 3:45 PM
Rome peaked in the late 90′s-early 2000′s. I actually listen to Cowherd more than Rome now, at least Cowherd gets some good guests and he follows the Kornheiser model of avoiding athlete interviews because they’re typically uninteresting. Rome still insists on interviewing athletes, and some of them are good, but for every Mark Grace there’s like 10 Willis McGahees.
January 6th, 2012 at 3:51 PM
Stop the bus- t rog has a show on Yahoo Sports radio as does Sean Pendergast (aka Sean the Cablinasian).
January 6th, 2012 at 3:56 PM
Since I’m the sports talk radio expert, I’ll weigh in…Travis Rogers sounds identical to Rome..similar cadence, similar bits, similar comedy…similar logic patterns, you almost start to wonder if he was the brains behind Rome’s success. Either way, he’s a talented guy and it’s a good listen (if you can find it).
Still can’t believe ESPN Radio is trying to rescue their nights by going with two guys that aren’t radio guys. Just boggles my mind. They honesty are just going to continue rolling out the model of doing a tv show and calling it a radio show.
January 6th, 2012 at 3:58 PM
Thanks TJ…I’ll track him down for a listen. Gotta support the fellow ‘Ho’s.
January 6th, 2012 at 4:01 PM
Ignorant, blowhards were on the radio (at least where I am from) talking about sports long before Jim Rome’s career even started.
January 6th, 2012 at 4:03 PM
Quick question for y’all…do most of you work/write in the sports world? I’ve seen a few blogs from some of the commenters, just curious if that is the norm. Honestly don’t know how y’all keep up eith these threads each and every day. I love popping in, the banter is far too witty and intelligent though for me to be a regular, and oh yeah, I have a traditional jobby-job.
January 6th, 2012 at 4:03 PM
Lima, how do you like working for Andy Roth? He was a great PD at the station in Buffalo and i can tell the difference now that he moved on to Cleveland.
January 6th, 2012 at 4:05 PM
Stop the Bus – only person here i know works in media is cursed cleveland. Im sure some of the veterans here know of others. Im just a nobody who watches a lot of sports and reads a ton of newspapers and websites
January 6th, 2012 at 4:05 PM
The only requirement to be a regular is to show up on a regular basis.
/speaking from experience
January 6th, 2012 at 4:06 PM
Oh, and get a Gravar.
/glares at traderjack
January 6th, 2012 at 4:08 PM

January 6th, 2012 at 4:09 PM
I wrote for a small unimportant sports blog a few years ago. I think we had maybe 15 people who read it.

The only requirement to be a regular is to show up on a regular basis.
Inclusive. My kinda’ club…thanks TJ for the input.
January 6th, 2012 at 4:12 PM
trader..I haven’t been fired yet. But it’s been pretty good and he’s awesome. I’m getting TV time now too here so the move was well worth it it for me.
January 6th, 2012 at 4:15 PM
Good deal. I enjoyed when you filled in for Axe up here. I am thankful for Brent because without him, syracuse sports media would suffer so much. There are these two local hacks who attempt to talk sports here in Utica/Rome area. Thank goodness for the internet. I’ve tuned into Adam the Bull’s show on your station a few times. I liked him at WFAN in NYC
January 6th, 2012 at 4:17 PM
Brent is very good trader, Syracuse is lucky to have him. I don’t know how he kills four hours a day year-round, but he does.
January 6th, 2012 at 4:23 PM
Glad I’m not the only one who listens to Yahoo Sports Radio
I listen to czabe in the morning (6a eastern)
Kornheisers local show (10a eastern)
Tony Bruno on the fanatic out of Philly (noon)
Mike Musenelli (sp) also on the fanatic (2p eastern)
Travis Rodgers on Yahoo sports radio (4p eastern)
Yahoo used to be Sporting News Radio.
Sean Pendergast is no longer on yahoo, Craig Shemon took his spot
He now has a Morning local show on KGOW 1560 in Houston (7am eastern)
Fox sports radio used to be great. It’s a disaster now. Only guy I like is John Fricke and he’s just a fill-in
January 6th, 2012 at 4:27 PM
Shemon is fantastic. Good for yahoo to get him.
January 6th, 2012 at 4:32 PM
Also, after the red sox imploded, I started listening to a lot of WEEI. Dennis and Callahan, Mut and Merloni, and the Big Show.
I will switch between WEEI and the fanatic, depending on the topic.
January 6th, 2012 at 4:35 PM
Is Missanelli better ever since he detached himself from being Stephen A Smith’s sidekick?
January 6th, 2012 at 4:35 PM
I really like Shemon/Berger on weekends, I’m not as big a fan of Shemon solo.
January 6th, 2012 at 4:36 PM
Jesus Christ. This post got this huge # of comments? What the hell? I’m not reading through it all because of meetings/self-importance/et al. but I hope I’m not the only one who knows off the top of their head that CBS Sports Network is channel 603 on DirecTV because that would tell me I’m the only person scrambling to find the Navy or San Diego State game on saturdays in the fall
January 6th, 2012 at 4:37 PM
I’ve only heard Mis solo. Never knew he was with SAS.
January 6th, 2012 at 4:40 PM
CBS sports network used to be something like college sports network.
They do air a lot of low profile games
They also air the Tim Brando radio show, which I neither listen to or watch
January 6th, 2012 at 6:37 PM
When SAS was originally on ESPN Radio a few years ago, missanelli was the co-host. A lot of the time, Smith was in NY and Mis co-hosted from Philly
January 6th, 2012 at 7:21 PM
CBS sports network does mountain west and conference USA games, also army and navy, plus other college sports across conferences. They have some weekly shows and also cover other sports like PBR and lax. Say what you will about Rome, I’m glad more sports personalities are willing to say no to ESPN (Bruce Feldman is another cbs sports net guy that jumped the ESPN ship for CBS sports network.
January 6th, 2012 at 7:52 PM
papa joe chevalier (rip)
i used to enjoy brian kenny’s show and all night with jason smith. sad that both are gone.
January 6th, 2012 at 9:34 PM
Jim Rome is leaving ESPN? What a stupid decision. It’s like showing up to a party with a Boner in sweatpants.
January 6th, 2012 at 10:28 PM
I lost interest in Rome as soon as T-Rodg left. He ran some long lovefest with him after ten years then cans him and never acknowledges him. Go to Yahoo Sports Radio and listen for his Friday Facts with Beckner. The best segment in radio. Also, google Adam Clanton or Rome on a Mobile. This is a real impression, hilarious
January 7th, 2012 at 6:09 AM
Jim Everett loves this conversation.
January 7th, 2012 at 5:30 PM
I will always have some respect for Jim Rome because I still remember my dad listening to him when I was like ten and Rome was interviewing Mark Grace and I learned what a “slump-buster” is.
