the top two records have the incentive of a bye week, the 3rd and 4th seeds have the incentive of a home game. then a potential 4-5 teams have the incentive to win a wild card spot.

if you take away the incentives, you take away the need to play to the end of the season. aside from the packers, every team had something on the line in week 17 this year, either home game, a bye or a wild card spot.
