Landry Jones is Returning to Oklahoma For His Senior Season
In a mildly surprisingly move, Oklahoma QB Landry Jones decided to pass up the NFL so he could return to the Sooners for his senior season, the school announced today.
Sorry Washington and Seattle, but your No. 1 target for QB next year is going to have to be Baylor’s Robert Griffin III. Good luck trading up to get him. Unless you’d rather gobble up Texas A&M’s Ryan Tannehill in the second round. Who wants to take a flier on old man Brandon Weeden? (Fire up the Roger Staubach story!) Does Kirk Cousins later in the draft interest you?
As we’ve chronicled here throughout the season. Jones had an up-and-down junior year. There were disagreements about him in the preseason. Are his lofty stats just a product of the OU system? Is his arm strong enough? Has Sam Bradford’s unimpressive NFL start hurt Jones at all?
After his best receiver, Ryan Broyles, went down, Jones looked even worse. What’s he going to do without his safety net next season? All legitimate questions. It certainly didn’t help Jones that the preseason No. 1 Sooners (damn those preseason polls!) had a disappointing year, losing to Texas Tech (at home!), Baylor, and then getting throttled by Oklahoma State.
The one big risk here is that if Jones regresses further, he could easily fall down a couple rounds because there are so many potentially good QBs that could enter the 2013 draft. Jones was likely the 3rd QB who would have selected in the 2012 draft. He could fall as far as 5th in 2013, maybe 6th if Virginia Tech’s Logan Thomas improves and comes out. (The opposite is also true – if Murray, Bray and Thomas don’t come out, Jones could end up being the 2nd or 3rd QB taken. I’m not sold on some of the other seniors like Arizona State’s Brock Osweiler, WVU’s Geno Smith, or FSU’s EJ Manuel. Then again, who thought Robert Griffin would have the kind of year he did?)
I guess staying in school is the trend among QBs? Sam Bradford did it (he got hurt), then Andrew Luck did it (he didn’t win the Heisman), Matt Barkley did it (we’ll see what happens), and now Jones has decided to wait for NFL riches.

A #1 overall pick, a sure lock for #1 overall pick and a probable #1 overall pick. Not saying it works out for Jones, but you can’t say the first 2 guys made the wrong decision, and if Barkley keeps improving, you can add him to that list.
January 5th, 2012 at 6:57 PM
Has Luck declared for the draft yet?
It’s a little more than 3 months, and I am not sure why you are apologizing.

Fixed that for you. There’s an argument to be made against staying, and you picked the two worst examples you could have possibly used.

Jake Locker and Matt Leinart come to mind.
January 5th, 2012 at 7:20 PM
Saying Bradford has been unimpressive is misleading without context. He had decent rookie year followed up by a mountain of injuries to his starters, including favorite target Danny Amendola and to himself. Context please.
January 5th, 2012 at 7:26 PM
At least they went in the 1st round. Has everybody forgot about the Martina Navratalova doppelganger, Jevan Snead?!?!
January 5th, 2012 at 7:27 PM
He was also infected minihoodieitis which is career threatening.
January 5th, 2012 at 7:28 PM
Peyton Manning stayed…worked out for him. Matt Leinart stayed…didn’t work out for him. Jake Locker stayed…didn’t work out for him. Tim Tebow stayed…arguably didn’t work out for him.
January 5th, 2012 at 7:28 PM
Entering his junior season at Ole Miss, Snead was considered a top-2 quarterback prospect (along with Sam Bradford) for the 2010 NFL Draft. CBSSports.com’s Pete Prisco even projected Snead to be the No. 1 pick in 2010. Eventually, despite high expectations for the season and a lot of talent,[citation needed] he struggled throughout the year and it led to him going undrafted.[29]
Completely forgot about Snead. That’s a huge fall.

saying he’s unimpressive after one and a half seasons is equally confounding considering the three years of vehement sanchez defense.
January 5th, 2012 at 7:31 PM
Reading Sneads Wiki, damn, never realized the guy went from being possible number one pick to not even on a roster in less than a couple years.
January 5th, 2012 at 7:32 PM
I’d say if you switch Sanchez and Bradford the Jets are possibly still playing this weekend. The Rams would probably have no wins.
January 5th, 2012 at 7:44 PM
But Sanchez is so dreamy! He was in GQ! He bangs models! And teenagers! and during draft interviews he was so impressive!
January 5th, 2012 at 7:44 PM
I doubt that, they seem like the same QB other than Bradford being injury prone. It seems his rookie year was the anomaly, while his last year in college and this year are proving to be the norm.
January 5th, 2012 at 7:48 PM
Shocking.
January 5th, 2012 at 7:49 PM
I agree with Mantis, Prisco has shown to be a pretty terrible NFL guy.

I am by no means a Pitt fan — I just happen to be from Pittsburgh. I may even root for SMU as my greatest NCAA dynasty was with the Mustangs.

Oh yeah? What year of NCAA football was that that you started with them?

I want to say it was NCAA 06. My move is to pick teams that are bad then build them up to national powerhouses. If I remember correctly I went 11-1 in my second year and was asked to join the Big 12, which was insane at the time. I remember calling my friend who was my goto dynasty conversation buddy and he was shocked. Out of my circle of friends I was the only one who was ever asked to join a conference. All i remember was having a white running back who was like 3 straight heismans.

January 5th, 2012 at 8:59 PM
In 2006 we weren’t bad actually (relative to SMU). Finished 6-6 and just barely missed out on a bowl bid. Best record post-Death Penalty since 6-5 in ’98. The QB that year was Justin Willis, who was kind of a Robert Griffin type QB, except smaller and with not as good an arm. But he was creative, explosive, could break a play at any time and was hard to tackle. That was also Emmanuel Sanders freshman year as well (now the starting slot receiver on the Steelers). He and Sanders were a pretty dynamic duo for a time. And SMU’s defense was the best run defense in CUSA that year.

I should say, that was the best record post DP until June’s second season when we went 8-5.

Guy had a lot of potential after last year, but his knee was cursed this season(just like every players body this year). I see him making a huge leap after Antonio Brown exploding next year. He will be motivated.
January 5th, 2012 at 9:02 PM
I vaguely remember having a fast QB, that and the fact they had sweet unis. Also they had helmet stickers which was basically made it a no brainer selection. Your SMU knowledge is impressive.

He’s tough, but his biggest problem is his relative lack of size. But he’s quick, has great hands, runs immaculate routes, has great field awareness, and fantastic body control. If he can stay healthy, he could be a great receiver for you guys for several years.
January 5th, 2012 at 9:09 PM
I like him because he can be deadly with the YAC. Too bad we have an OC who doesn’t know how to utilize our weapons properly. Instead, Bruce Arians likes the bubble screen to Hines Ward so he can pad those stats.

If he was #16 that was Willis. Very fast and agile. Not terribly large though. They had a decent deep threat receiver that year too. A white kid named Bobby Chase. He was in the same fraternity as me. One of the nicest guys I ever met in my life, but a Rhodes Scholar he was not.
I know pretty much everything you need to know about SMU in the last 30 years, and quite a bit beyond that. I’m not like SC, once I have my teams I stick with them and learn everything I can about them. I’m very loyal.

Well Hines is quickly reaching the twilight of his career. As he loses playing time Brown and Sanders will take more of it. I think Sanders has a higher ceiling than Brown; Sanders is more polished.

It’s true. Even the good public schools like Memorial in Houston. Scroll through here and you’ll see quite a few: http://www.txhshelmetproject.com/

Brown’s stats are better because he’s played more because he’s been healthy. I will happily make a bet with Jose on which of them will have a better career.
