BCS Bowl Game Ratings Are Down Pretty Significantly in 2012 [UPDATE]
Are college basketball games and NBA games pulling viewers away from BCS bowl games? Ratings four three of the four BCS games on ESPN have been dreadful. Rose Bowl? Down. Sugar Bowl? Down. Orange Bowl? Way down. What probably stings even more is that three of the four games were competitive games until the final seconds (or went to overtime).
The only BCS bowl game that saw a spike in viewers in 2012 was the Fiesta (Andrew Luck’s overtime thriller against Oklahoma State). And part of the reason is because the 2011 Fiesta Bowl was such an awful matchup. It was the lowest-rated BCS game last year.
[UPDATE: ESPN has notified me that technically, prior to the Orange Bowl, the network was UP year-over-year when you take the average of the 2012 Rose, Fiesta and Sugar Bowls, even though two of the games were lowered-rated than the year prior. When you factor in the Orange Bowl, that is no longer the case.]
Orange Bowl (West Virginia over Clemson, 70-33): 5.3 rating.
In 2011, the Orange Bowl between Stanford and Virginia Tech drew a 7.1.
Sugar Bowl (Michigan over Virgina Tech, 23-20 in OT): 7.0 rating.
In 2011, the Sugar Bowl between Ohio State and Arkansas drew a 9.5.
Fiesta Bowl (Oklahoma State over Stanford, 41-38 in OT): 9.7 rating.
In 2011, the Fiesta Bowl between Oklahoma and Connecticut drew a 7.1 rating.
Rose Bowl (Oregon over Wisconsin 45-38): 11.8 rating.
In 2011, the Rose Bowl between TCU and Wisconsin drew an 13.1 rating. The 2010 Rose Bowl between Ohio State and Oregon drew a 13.8.

The other part of the reason is that it was a great matchup which people were looking forward to, probably as much as people are looking forward to the National Championship game.

35 total bowl games. The ratings are shown for 4. Of those 4 only 3 decreases. Perhaps “significant” might be a reach this early in the conversation?
January 5th, 2012 at 1:05 PM
I lost alot of respect for ESPN during this bowl season
January 5th, 2012 at 1:06 PM
Also, I bet the Rose Bowl lost viewership because it was on January 2 instead of New Year’s Day.

The Pizza Bowl ratings had to be up this year.
January 5th, 2012 at 1:08 PM
I just found out that the Mets are paying Bobby Bonilla over a mil per year until 2035. LOLMETS
January 5th, 2012 at 1:09 PM
snark aside…that’s actually a pretty valid reason.
I was going to drink the night away after the botched 16 second drive until I remembered vacation was over and I had to go back to work the next day
January 5th, 2012 at 1:09 PM
The LOL is on you, that story is like 2 years old. Don’t drift off the topic of this fascinating RATINGS post.

snark aside…that’s actually a pretty valid reason.
I was going to drink the night away after the botched 16 second drive until I remembered vacation was over and I had to go back to work the next day
But you still actually watched the game, right?
January 5th, 2012 at 1:10 PM
Pretty smart move based on the time value of money…could have paid him that million 10 years ago when it was worth a lot more or in 2035 when it will be but a blip on their payroll
My only problem with this post is the assumption that people are watching college basketball in large enough numbers to shift TV ratings
January 5th, 2012 at 1:11 PM
That Bonilla story is more like 20 years old, but this ratings shit is fascinating
January 5th, 2012 at 1:11 PM
The Rose Bowl should be immutable.
January 5th, 2012 at 1:12 PM
That was well known, but I mentioned this a few weeks ago. He gets 1.2 from the Mets, plus 700,00K a year or so from the Orioles, and 200K a year for some payment from MLB. A cool $2 million a year for a guy who hasn’t played in a decade. Talk about an awesome agent.
January 5th, 2012 at 1:12 PM
Michigan may be back, but their ratings aren’t.
January 5th, 2012 at 1:12 PM
So let’s talk about this. Target brand Metamucil is so vastly inferior to Walmart brand Metamucil. It’s ridiculous.

January 5th, 2012 at 1:13 PM
So you saying that ratings for BCS bowls with mediocre teams playing in them are not good? Jarring
January 5th, 2012 at 1:13 PM
This again? Please stop with the posts about how tv ratings mean something.
January 5th, 2012 at 1:13 PM
The NFL is king.
January 5th, 2012 at 1:13 PM
I can understand that point of view if you root for Wisconsin.
January 5th, 2012 at 1:13 PM
My only problem with this post is the assumption that people are watching college basketball in large enough numbers to shift TV ratings
Agreed. It’s a rather half-assed conjecture based on absolutely nothing whatsoever. If JMac were to pull the ratings from NBA and college games that went up against those Bowl games for this year and last year, then he might have something. Unless of course those ratings didn’t match up with his narrative. Then he’d have nothing. Except the modicum of respect some commenters are willing to give him temporarily until he does something that outrages them.
January 5th, 2012 at 1:13 PM
So let’s talk about this. Target brand Metamucil is so vastly inferior to Walmart brand Metamucil. It’s ridiculous.
Walmart knows their clientele.
I prefer reduced fat cheez-its to normal cheez its.
January 5th, 2012 at 1:14 PM
Pretty sure that it was like deferring $10M to get $25M. No way an agent restructures without a clear benefit to client = clear benefit to himself.
January 5th, 2012 at 1:14 PM
Orange Bowl (West Virginia over Clemson, 70-33): 4.5 rating.
I’m guessing there aren’t a whole lot of cable tv viewers in West Virginia or amongst Clemson fans.
January 5th, 2012 at 1:14 PM
Right. More a comment on why casual fans may not have watched the game.
January 5th, 2012 at 1:15 PM
What about the fact that most games are on ESPN. If they were on network I may have tuned in.
/didn’t watch the few that were on network
January 5th, 2012 at 1:15 PM
Well, the Orange and Sugar pitted retards against each other and everyone knew that all 4 teams sucked, so that makes sense. The Rose being down is a bit odd as it was always going to be a great game. The Fiesta was huge, though last year’s was so bad that it was always going to be up.
January 5th, 2012 at 1:15 PM
This made me laugh

January 5th, 2012 at 1:16 PM
I quit on them after the Butler game last year (looking like I made the smart move this year) but don’t even Big Monday games draw less than a million? And what games were on that were taking eyes away from the BCS games anyhow?
January 5th, 2012 at 1:16 PM
What are you, some kind of idiot?
January 5th, 2012 at 1:16 PM
What about the fact that most games are on ESPN. If they were on network I may have tuned in.

I meant that the conjecture was based on nothing written in the post. He just asked the question and didn’t attempt to answer it.
January 5th, 2012 at 1:16 PM
So you’re saying you need Ohio State in a BCS game to bring ratings?
January 5th, 2012 at 1:17 PM
A bit of revisionist history, but the available market rates have been so low the past few years, this isn’t as much of a slam dunk as it seemed. If they had invested the money in a guaranteed interest account at the time, they’d be sitting pretty. But having to scrounge up the payments given the current investing environment is tougher than they anticipated.
January 5th, 2012 at 1:17 PM
I blame those NFL assholes for forcing these games to be moved off of New Years Day
January 5th, 2012 at 1:18 PM
You must be new. Here at TBL with call it the Jason McTibble. The only surprising thing is that it wasn’t asked in the title of the post, and then completely ignored.

WWoS -
Buy yourself a dedicated cheese slicer. It doesn’t even have to be a fancy one like this one.
You can slice cheese as slim as you want.
January 5th, 2012 at 1:18 PM
What are you, some kind of idiot?
As someone who always was in the “reduced fat stuff is all inferior to the normal stuff” camp — reduced fat Cheez-Its are better than the normal ones. If you are bringing in the flavored Cheez-Its its a non starter because the flavored ones are all much better.
January 5th, 2012 at 1:19 PM
Same for wheat thins. But really whole grain mini club crackers are awesome. The problem is slicing the cheese small enough.

I just can’t dig on the reduced fats. Though, reduced fat Cheez Its are better than normal Cheese Nips.
Last night I got on the wrong bus and ended up at the Highland Park Zoo and had to walk the two miles back home, I stopped at the Shop n Save near my house to get some Cheez Its, I think I earned them.
January 5th, 2012 at 1:20 PM
the number of bowl games, which are meaningless in the big picture, are the reason why some ratings are down.
i mean, just imagine if the NFL picked the super bowl teams, yet still made other teams play to see who won their divisions in the 30 days between the end of the season and the super bowl.
January 5th, 2012 at 1:20 PM
Interesting, I’ll have to think on this…been awhile since I’ve putzed around with financial planning spreadsheets
January 5th, 2012 at 1:20 PM

Fair enough.
January 5th, 2012 at 1:20 PM
Here’s an idea…put all of the damn bowl games on or around New Years Day and not this spread it out over the week and have the BCS game one week afterwards. No reason that Cotton, Orange and Sugar shouldn’t be on NYD.
January 5th, 2012 at 1:21 PM
I just think of them as “increased portion” rather than “reduced fat”.
January 5th, 2012 at 1:21 PM
/made more accurate
January 5th, 2012 at 1:21 PM
This is all kinds of wrong. Reduced fat cheez its are bland and gross, and the flavored ones are too strong and messy and gross. Regular Cheez-Its, best cracker of all time.
January 5th, 2012 at 1:22 PM
Eh.
Simmons saying how savvy it was that KG’s agent got him deferred money so he could ride out the lockout was so stupid. Implied KG was too dumb/inept/careless to just, I don’t know, save some of the millions he was making.
January 5th, 2012 at 1:22 PM
Well, I was just addressing the time value of money comment by Butters. I didn’t know any of the specifics.

If you live in Pittsburgh — which I think you do. I would guess you stopped at the Exxon station for your Cheez-Its. They have this slushpuppy\icee drink there called like Gator Juice or something like that and it is the greatest frozen drink ever concocted. It is a nectar of the gods.

Where are those? I know there’s the Mellon Park down near Bakery Square but am not sure if that’s what you’re referring to.

To go from $5.9 million in year 1 to $35 million 40 years later would only require less than a 5% annual return.
Adjust the numbers accordingly for appropriate years. I’m jumping in late.
January 5th, 2012 at 1:27 PM
Used to ball with the Pitt women’s team there. It’s right at Fifth/Penn IIRC (if those two roads even intersect…). Might be a blind or deaf school around there too.
January 5th, 2012 at 1:29 PM
Yeah those are the ones I’m thinking of. I’m dogsitting for my lady this week a few blocks the other way up Penn (hence getting on the wrong bus last night, goddamn multiple 87 buses). There are deaf children signs but I always figured those were fake.

Nah… I spent more of the game ripping on my crews haircut and games.
I think this is just not true.
But investing the $1 million per year? You are basically trading a 10 year delay in getting started on that 5%, to gain $25M.

January 5th, 2012 at 1:31 PM

I blame ESPN and there focus on the title game only. It’s become and epidemic. College Game Day used to be appointment TV for me. They would talk about every single game, every important player. I used to have a pretty good grasp on everything that was going on in college football across almost every team and every conference BCS and Mid-Major. Every Thursday night there would be a big Mountain West game be it BYU vs Utah or Colorado State vs Air Force, Tirico, Herbie, and EA would do the game. Sure those teams weren’t great but it was entertaining and certainly preferable to watching Friends or Will and Grace on Thursday night. Then College Game Day would prep me for every game that weekend, The ND game on NBC the SEC game on CBS, the Big Ten game on ABC, the ACC or Big East game on ESPN, the Pac-10 Game on Fox Sports and then the late nigh WAC or MWC game on ESPN to close the night. Either way I knew a little something about those teams and when bowl season came around I would end up watching the teams that I ended up enjoying.
Now, they spend 80% of the time pimping the national title game or only talking about teams that may be in the national title game. Back in 1999 I had watched TCU and LaDainian Tomlinson, I saw Brian Urlacher play for New Mexico during a Thursday night ESPN game. Now I don’t know shit about any mid-major player that isn’t on BSU. Hell I don’t know much about any SEC team besides LSU and Alabama.
ESPN has done this by not allowing people to become invested an anything but the biggest deal and it’s not just CFB. Baseball Tonight is 5 minutes of highlights and a 25 minutes breakdown of the Red Sox and Yankees next series, NFL Primetime is 10 minutes of highlights a 30 minute breakdown of the NFC East, 10 minutes of Tebow and 10 minutes of what wrong with Romo, NBA coverage is 80% Heat/Lakers 10% Knicks/Celtics and 10% the rest of the league. You cannot force feed the public Turkey and expect them to give a shit about the rest of the buffet.
Fuck ESPN

Also the Rose Bowl may have been down a little because of the date switch, ya know, since it’s never been on January 2. I’m sure people were confused as hell.

shocker! gator bowl had osu and florida and was higher than a year prior that had miss st and michigan. alabama vs msu was in the cap one bowl last year and was higher than nebraska vs south carolina. and florida vs penn state from last year was higher than michigan st vs georgia. hmmmm, what could this mean?
