believe it or not, Kia’s are no longer terrible cars. Their shitty reputation was well earned, however.

My wife had one of the shitty ones before we got married. I couldn’t stand that thing. She rear-ended a truck at about 20 mph and the entire front of her car crumpled up about 2 1/2 feed. We got 100,000 miles on the thing though. Got like $500 on the trade-in and I was grateful. I thought it was going to just fall apart like the police car at the end of The Blues Brothers.

I don’t know how old you are, or how poor your friends were in the 1990s, but Kias were basically Renaults in the beginning.
They were really, really bad. They’re good now, and a lot of old people buy them up here, because they’re inexpensive, and have a good warranty, and actually work.
