Mike Pereira to ESPN’s Jon Gruden: You’re a Blowhard and Don’t Know What You’re Talking About
Mike Pereira, FOX’s newest NFL star – they love him on instant replay! – trashed ESPN’s Jon Gruden in a column about officiating:
I am not a fan of Gruden’s. Not today, not yesterday, not when I worked for the NFL and not when I was working on the field as a side judge. He was a loudmouth as a coach who constantly disrespected officials and he is a blowhard in the broadcast booth who spouts off when he doesn’t know what he is talking about.
The NFL sent out an email and video Tuesday attempting to clarify helmet-to-helmet hits. If you saw the Saints-Falcons game Monday, then you know the league was clearly trying to get a subtle message to the ESPN announcers, who seemed unsure of the rules regarding those types of penalties.
I think the NFL nudged Pereira to write this.

Fuck Mike Periera.
December 29th, 2011 at 11:59 AM
Whoa, Mike Pereira is blindly defending referees while making himself the center of attention? Jarring…

I certainly don’t “claim” the Bruins more than out of New England pride, however I do think this is kind of cool to see…

Gruden said he couldn’t see the difference between two hits.
One was a helmet-to-helmet on a defenseless receiver (penalty), the other was a shoulder to a receivers lower back (no penalty). It was pretty bad work in the booth.
December 29th, 2011 at 12:04 PM
this again.
December 29th, 2011 at 12:04 PM
I would hope a former executive in charge of officiating would be a know-it-all about officiating.
December 29th, 2011 at 12:05 PM
I think the NFL nudged Pereira to write this.
Please elaborate

Questionable method of message delivery, but 100 percent accurate. Also, I think the world – or at least the Internet – could use a few more relentlessly positive people.
December 29th, 2011 at 12:07 PM
nobody gives a shit about officiating or what referee’s opinions are. they’re annoying, interrupt games, often influence the games negatively and are simply there to police the teams. nobody wants your opinion on anything other than questionable calls.

im sorry for being a negative nancy.
December 29th, 2011 at 12:08 PM
Fuck Mike Periera
Usually, but he got this one right. Gruden needs to leave the booth for the sake of the viewers of MNF. Miller, Kornheiser, Gruden…who’s next? Maybe we’ll get someone who’s a little less in love with hearing themselves talk.
December 29th, 2011 at 12:10 PM
Based on the Twitter Monday night I think this applies to Falcon fans as well
The last season of Dexter was the final straw, I now hate everything

December 29th, 2011 at 12:18 PM
Gruden is awful. Jaws is not much better.
But for Pereira of all people to call ANYONE out is laughable.
December 29th, 2011 at 12:18 PM
My understanding was that the first penalty was called as a hit to a defenseless receiver, which is pretty much what the second hit was as well. If the call was helmet to helmet then yeah, they’re 100% different. But I could have sworn the penalty called was for a hit to a defenseless receiver and Gruden was comparing the two hits based on that.

December 29th, 2011 at 12:21 PM
the helmet-to-helmet Monday night live was pretty obvious. For Chucky to claim that was a bad call simply showed he has no clue about NFL rules. What was surprising was that Jaws or Tirico didn’t point out the obvious.
FYI, Pereria went off on Chucky first on Monday night on Twitter as soon as Chucky was shooting off his mouth.
December 29th, 2011 at 12:23 PM
A defender can’t hit a defenseless receiver in the head/neck area with their head/shoulder/arm…that’s why it’s still called a defenseless receiver penalty.
You can hit a guy in the back whether he is “defenseless” or not.
December 29th, 2011 at 12:24 PM
Gotcha, did not know that. Gracias.
December 29th, 2011 at 12:24 PM
Stuff like this shouldn’t piss people off. Be appreciative that it entertained you for one year and never had the chance to horrifically piss you off.
December 29th, 2011 at 12:25 PM
Lisk in 2012.

I’ve got a face for radio. The voice on the other hand? Of course, I’ve stopped telling you all when I appear on radio since some commenters called me out for not humbly bragging about being on radio.
December 29th, 2011 at 12:26 PM
I’m not much of a radio guy…but if you ever end up on some podcasts, feel free to shout from the rooftops (or just post a link).

Well you are obviously a horrible person. May all your future television programs meet a grisly end.
December 29th, 2011 at 12:31 PM
What was surprising was that Jaws or Tirico didn’t point out the obvious.
This. I remember the day when a fellow announcer would correct his partner when they got something wrong, but no longer. And the mistakes/mis-speaks are much more frequent be/c the booths are now all filled with ex-players and coaches.

in golf, the misinformation stream is a giant circle jerk instead of simply not correcting anyone.
some of the shit that comes out of johnny miller and peter kostis’ mouths are simply incorrect. straight up WRONG.

December 29th, 2011 at 12:38 PM
off topic but, I love me some football and the last few times I have sat down to watch it I have fallen asleep. replay after replay, play stoppage, time out, commercial timeout, and then you have to deal with the morons in the booth like Collinsworth saying “They really need to pass here.*interception* Why did they pass there?!” and “If you take away all the negative stuff, he did pretty good!” and that was just on christmas. It has gotten to be almost unwatchable and mindnumbingly boring to watch football anymore.
December 29th, 2011 at 12:39 PM
and that isn’t even saying anything about the elaborate dance numbers after a 5 yard run and tackle 10 yards passed the line of scrimmage.
December 29th, 2011 at 12:39 PM
I’ll take it! Man teams with cap space are capable of making horrific trades.
December 29th, 2011 at 12:40 PM
agreed completely…and the DVR experience leaves you underwhelmed as well since you realize how much time you waste watching these things in real-time.
December 29th, 2011 at 12:42 PM
That’s why I tend to watch the RZC more, only bits and pieces of the games and less of the announcers.

“Hollinger’s Analysis” on the expected wins difference seems awfully wrong on this one.

I think he has determined that Nash is done(he might be right). Because I did a straight Collison for Nash trade and the Suns improved.
I have a feeling that Steve thought the lockout for the year was a sure bet and his newly single lifestyle led him to maybe slack off more then he ever has in the off season.
December 29th, 2011 at 12:48 PM
Watching Bears/Browns football will put anyone to sleep, don’t blame the league for this
December 29th, 2011 at 12:49 PM
fuck you fuckhead.
December 29th, 2011 at 12:50 PM
I loathe Gruden in the booth. But to be fair, I was watching that game and it seemed to me that Gruden more on the absurd determination about what constitutes an illegal hit than saying that the officials called it incorrectly. And frankly, he was right. Drilling a receiver in the kidneys with your helmet at full run shouldn’t be any less dirty/illegal than hitting him in the noggin.
December 29th, 2011 at 12:50 PM
And has there been more missed tackles than this year? every game I see there is constantly someone looking for the big hit instead using decent form and missing a tackle because they are looking for a highlight or they are just afraid of contact or they just run into the ball carrier.
December 29th, 2011 at 12:51 PM
i have been assaulted so much my these god damned Lexus commercials that it’s either i start watching a game a half-hour late and DVR fast-forward through the commercials or not watch football at all.
I hope the asshole who decided that innocent American football fans need to be beaten over the head every two minutes that we need to take out a mortgage to buy someone a Lexus just so we can get a blowjob, wraps their own Lexus around a telephone pole New Years Eve night.
Sonofabitches.
December 29th, 2011 at 12:51 PM
Agreed. I stumbled upon the tail end of one of your spots one day. Wish I’d been alerted.
December 29th, 2011 at 12:52 PM
Yeah, what spence said.
December 29th, 2011 at 12:53 PM
The NFL should go to the college system where replays are handled in the booth instead of having the head ref waddle over to look at it himself, should save some time…still use challenges on non-scoring plays though since I’ve seen college games where they’ve reviewed three straight plays, no one needs that
December 29th, 2011 at 12:53 PM
I miss leather helmets, too. And linemen wearing those huge forearm pads and neck rolls.

you aint that old..I mean you’re old..but NOT that old.
December 29th, 2011 at 12:57 PM
Might as well just put a bullet in your head, you’ll die quicker and it’ll be less painful.
December 29th, 2011 at 12:57 PM
Kinda like this
December 29th, 2011 at 12:58 PM
I say go all the way with the college rules. The whole challenge system takes way more time even if there are more replays in college. Every single coach lets the play clock run down waiting to throw that stupid red flag. Also fuck the challenge system. Get all the calls right. College does.
December 29th, 2011 at 12:59 PM

December 29th, 2011 at 1:06 PM
I was too poor to have a neck roll when I played…and it seemed like the guys WHO did have them had more neck problems with them than they did without them
December 29th, 2011 at 1:09 PM
not even fucking close. college refs are HORRIBLE.
December 29th, 2011 at 1:09 PM
Maybe they wore neck roll
they had problem with their neck. Pre-existing condition.
December 29th, 2011 at 1:10 PM
can’t spell “neckroll” without chris spielman.
bonus points for stachery.
December 29th, 2011 at 1:10 PM
Holy shit. Really screwed up that italic attempt.

“this thin sliver of soft foam will prevent my neck’s vertebrae from unnaturally fusing.”
December 29th, 2011 at 1:14 PM
Lets try that thought again.
The thing about the NFL is that ball carrier is trying to avoid being tackled just as much as the defender is trying to tackle them. There aren’t many opportunities in the madness of an NFL game for a nice form tackle. In most cases its get em down by any means possible knowing that the offensive player is trying to set you up for a misdirection.
The missed tackles might have something to do with better offensive players and rule changes favoring them.

December 29th, 2011 at 1:26 PM
Yep, exactly what my brother said. He only wore it because it looked cool.

That’s why I equip my best defensive player with a neck roll and visor in NCAA Football 12.

As someone who shares the same last name, it was nice to see some of you butchering the spelling in the ways I usually see it done.
