Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook Got into a Shouting Match and Had to Be Separated by Teammates. Here Come the (Rajon Rondo?) Trade Rumors
Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook are two of the top 20 players in the NBA. Last year, they teamed up to reach the Western Conference Finals. The Thunder are the favorites in the West to reach the NBA Finals this year. And three games into the 2011 campaign, the dynamic duo got into their first heated argument of the young season, and had to be separated by teammates.
Westbrook’s frustration appeared to have started with just 3 1/2 minutes remaining in the second quarter when he drove into the paint and kicked the ball out to Thabo Sefolosha in the corner. Sefolosha passed up a wide open 3-pointer, which prompted Westbrook to yell at Sefolosha “shoot the (expletive) ball.”
Sefolosha and other teammates, including Durant and center Kendrick Perkins attempted to calm Westbrook down immediately during an ensuing trip to the free throw line. But the emotions spilled over to the bench one minute later.
Durant appeared to again settle Westbrook, but Westbrook appeared to take exception to how Durant delivered his message. The two began shouting at each other and had to be separated.
Not. Good. Westbrook never recovered from the skirmish, and had arguably the worst game of his career: 0-for-13 shooting. Durant carried the Thunder to victory with 32 points.
All seemed well between the pair for the remainder of the game, but it’s pretty clear dating back to last season that Westbrook thinks of himself as an Alpha Dog. Westbrook has the scoring ability to be a No. 1 option, but he’ll never be that guy on a team with the game’s best young player.
As others have noted, Westbrook was the 4th player taken in the 2008 draft, but hasn’t yet received his contract extension. The No. 1 pick in 2008, Derrick Rose, got his extension this month. The Timberwolves are practically tripping over themselves to get Kevin Love an extension. The other top five picks in 2008 probably haven’t earned an extension (Michael Beasley, who is already on his second team, and OJ Mayo, who the Grizzlies have been trying to trade).
What will Oklahoma City do with Westbrook? How much longer until the Rajon Rondo trade rumors surface? Would Doc Rivers be able to build around Westbrook in Boston when fossils like Pierce, KG and Ray Allen are gone?
Here’s Chris Webber tip-toeing around the topic after the Thunder win:

Starbury v2.0

Hang in there Westbrook. Phoenix has a dump truck of money headed your way in the offseason.
December 29th, 2011 at 10:44 AM
why would boston take westbrook? i dont thik he’s that much of an upgrade, if any, over rondo.
December 29th, 2011 at 10:44 AM
Package him for Dwight Howard. C’mon Presti. Quit sitting on your hands.
December 29th, 2011 at 10:44 AM
Only if Ainge is willing to let Presti take advantage of him again.
December 29th, 2011 at 10:46 AM
The moral of the story is that whenever Thabo Sefolosha has an open look, god damnit he needs to take it.
December 29th, 2011 at 10:46 AM
I can see Ainge pulling the trigger for Westbrook. Rajon w/ OKC >>>
December 29th, 2011 at 10:47 AM
someone please remind me why this is a big deal? i didn’t know everyone on a team has to be bffs.
December 29th, 2011 at 10:50 AM
OK City has gone as far as they can go with Westbrook at point. Should have traded him for Paul last year. They are kidding themselves if they don’t move him.
December 29th, 2011 at 10:50 AM
Its not. They will make a run this year, offer him a decent contract and ultimately he will take more money elsewhere.
December 29th, 2011 at 10:50 AM
good thing Isiah Thomas never argued with teammates on or off the court.
December 29th, 2011 at 10:50 AM
Harsh. hopefully, not accurate (as i like Westbrook)
December 29th, 2011 at 10:52 AM
The Pistons suck.
December 29th, 2011 at 10:52 AM
So Durant’s gonna win a title with Boston?
December 29th, 2011 at 10:52 AM
He was so endearing.
December 29th, 2011 at 10:52 AM
I think they sit tight and try to sign Dwight Howard in the offseason.
December 29th, 2011 at 10:53 AM
Arguments happen. Hell, got to see a few really angry exchanges between Chris Paul and David West here in New Orleans.
The key is how they handle it. If they can put it past them and deal, then it’s just a sign of the team growing. If they can’t, then watch for the Westbrook trade rumors to heat up.
And while talented, Westbrook isn’t someone to build around. Not until he grows the fuck up.

The Thunder stealing the Knicks color scheme remains the biggest NBA crime.
December 29th, 2011 at 10:55 AM
March 16th. Mark your calendar. It will be for
allthe majority of the lotto balls.December 29th, 2011 at 10:56 AM
This to an extent. It reminds me a little bit of the Tom Brady / Offensive coordinator argument from a few weeks back. They’re competitive men in a hyper-competitive environment. Arguments will happen. In a vacuum, it shouldn’t be a big deal.
That being said, after last season I’m less willing to think this will just go away. KD, while a great player, is far from perfect, but Westbrook plays too selfishly to be a true PG, and this situation will likely only get worse.
If Boston would take a Rondo/Westbrook swap, I think Presti would throw out his shoulder patting himself on the back for that one.
December 29th, 2011 at 10:56 AM
Boston when fossils like Pierce, KG and Ray Allen are gone?
I think they sit tight and try to sign Dwight Howard in the offseason.
But will Howard be there this offseason. I think Orlando’s certain he’s gone after this season, whether they trade him or he bails as a FA. So they’re going to try to get something for him. But if he refuses to sign a long-term extention, the Magic won’t get as much back for him — making a trade probably mute.
December 29th, 2011 at 10:57 AM
My favorite thing about this little escapade is how Westbrook was able to create a shot forThabo Sefalosha, who doesn’t want to shoot it. And somewhere, just standing there on the court, in the same outfit, is Durant. And Westbrook is the guy who gets to be inconsolably pissed off out of the deal.
December 29th, 2011 at 10:57 AM
yes. so bad. holy shit they are bad.
December 29th, 2011 at 10:59 AM
Doubtful. If a trade happens, we’ll hear all about it.
December 29th, 2011 at 10:59 AM
Hopefully they can unload some of those contracts and bring in some talented lost souls.
December 29th, 2011 at 10:59 AM
Especially if it’s a Dyson.
December 29th, 2011 at 10:59 AM
When the Knicks added black to the mix they became whores and tarnished any uni rep they had.
Nothing worse than the “randomly adding black to the color scheme” uniform fad of the late 90s/early 2000s. Thankfully, the Niners realized this and said fuck that shit and returned to uniform glory.
December 29th, 2011 at 10:59 AM
When Westbrook shows up with ‘all alone’ written in black magic marker on his kicks, you know shit’s going down.
December 29th, 2011 at 11:03 AM
Dumars gambled on Billups and hit it big. The Ben Wallace acquisition from Grant Hill may be the luckiest deal ever. his best move, IMO, was moving Stack for Rip. he raped MJ in that deal.
December 29th, 2011 at 11:04 AM
Starbury v2.0
When Westbrook shows up with ‘all alone’ written in black magic marker on his kicks, you know shit’s going down.
And when he’s caught nailing a fat team exec in the back of an Escalade parked out in OKC, his ascension to the Starbury Throne will be complete.
December 29th, 2011 at 11:08 AM
Vince Carter and Tracy McGrady. I’m going to take this all in and enjoy it at the expense of the Longhorn apologists that try to tell me Durant is some kind of modest prince.
December 29th, 2011 at 11:08 AM
what is this supposed to mean?
December 29th, 2011 at 11:09 AM
Scottie Pippen and Michael Jordan never squawked at one another…
December 29th, 2011 at 11:10 AM
Google it.
December 29th, 2011 at 11:11 AM
Kissing Cousins?
December 29th, 2011 at 11:12 AM
James Harden is going to be a monster, I wouldn’t even consider trying to trade Westbrook if not for that.
December 29th, 2011 at 11:12 AM
Huge move. Never liked Rip though. As I’ve said before, looks way too much like Ruthie from the Real World.
December 29th, 2011 at 11:14 AM
SC, if you are suggesting anything but McGrady wanted to get fucking paid, you’re wrong. He was extremely young, and made bank with Orlando.
December 29th, 2011 at 11:14 AM
Team Dyson. The amoutn of hair, dust, etc. that thing picks up is amazing.
December 29th, 2011 at 11:14 AM
As I’ve said before, looks way too much like Ruthie from the Real World.
Do you think Rip puts ‘em down like Ruthie?
December 29th, 2011 at 11:18 AM
Eskimo Brothers?
/Taco’d
December 29th, 2011 at 11:19 AM
I’m suggesting these two asshats should learn how to play together because they’re both extremely talented. You know, how Vince and Tracy should have learned to do the same but their giant egos got in the way of what could have been a great guard combination.
But hey, this is the NBA and 12 different cabs show up at the arena.
December 29th, 2011 at 11:21 AM
/team I have testicles so I let my wife do the vacuuming
//she did get a Dyson though
December 29th, 2011 at 11:21 AM
Hell, Jordan once punched Steve Kerr in the face during practice…this is a non-story
December 29th, 2011 at 11:21 AM
Stephon forcing his way out of Minnesota turned out to be a well-crafted, borderline genius move.
Hopefully these guys are up on their NBA history.
December 29th, 2011 at 11:22 AM
Really? Vince and Tracy as a backcourt together?
December 29th, 2011 at 11:24 AM
yeah, the guys who played the same exact position.
Tracy should have taken a lot less money to stay with Toronto instead of going to Orlando to play with Grant Hill, who played a different position and was also able to be paid. If you want to imagine anything, imagine what it would have been like for those two together. But Hill never was healthy.
December 29th, 2011 at 11:25 AM
But no punched cab drivers.
December 29th, 2011 at 11:28 AM
I always thought Ruthie looked more like Tiger.
December 29th, 2011 at 11:29 AM
The argument doesn’t bother me…the continuing to jack up shots during an 0-fer night does.
December 29th, 2011 at 11:37 AM

December 29th, 2011 at 11:39 AM
You cant win with shoot forst PG’s in the NBA
Westbrook for Rondo and that team wins a title. They should have fallen over themselves to get CP3
December 29th, 2011 at 11:45 AM
That’s a solid bit of business right there and it’s a shame nobody is giving Rusty the respect he deserves for it.
December 29th, 2011 at 11:47 AM
Sefalosha should have shot the fucking ball. The argument is a non-issue
December 29th, 2011 at 11:48 AM
Unless you’re the 2004 Detroit Pistons.
December 29th, 2011 at 12:08 PM
you can’t win what; championships, games, what?
December 29th, 2011 at 12:13 PM
This is NONSENSE to even think about trading Westbrook considering you would not have been in Western Conference finals without him. I like the FIRE and ICE attitude with Westbrook and Durant U need Westbrooks feisty attitude to show the toughness. He’s a good kid and if Thunder let him go Thunder would drop so far in the standings and struggle to make playoffs
December 29th, 2011 at 12:54 PM
The problem here is Russell Westbrook is not a point guard.
December 29th, 2011 at 1:47 PM
The problem here is Russell Westbrook is not a point guard.
I agree. He is a helluva player, but maybe he should have been a “guard”, and not a facilitator.
December 29th, 2011 at 4:36 PM
Westbrook is a ballhogging, badshot taking wanna be a legend dope…… Can’t wait till they get true point guard.
