Super Bowl Coaches Jon Gruden, Bill Cowher and Jeff Fisher Are Being Linked To Several Jobs, But Are They Fool’s Gold?
Yesterday, Jon Gruden’s name was floated, tied to current San Diego GM A.J. Smith. Gruden, of course, has been retired from coaching for the last three seasons and is currently a Monday Night Football analyst. Today, the Rams are reportedly interested in making a “serious run” at Jeff Fisher. Fisher has taken the last year off after being fired in Tennessee, following 16+ seasons as the head coach. Bill Cowher, another coach with a Super Bowl to his credit, has been linked to an interview already in San Diego (which will be denied since Norv has yet to be officially fired), just as he was in Miami earlier this season. Cowher, of course, has been out of coaching now for five seasons.
All of these men will be attractive candidates, and will likely demand higher salaries to obtain their services than the average coaching candidate. Let’s face it they also generate more public interest than speculation about largely anonymous assistants. Owners who turn their team over to any of these three will be hoping to duplicate their earlier success, and will pay for that experience.
But is it worth it? Coaches, just like players, age. The energy and drive that helped with reaching the mountain top may wane. Coaches who have reached a Super Bowl, then taken time off before returning as a head coach later, haven’t exactly lit the world on fire as a group. Here’s a summary of every coach, that like Cowher, Fisher and Gruden, has reached a Super Bowl, then taken at least one season off from coaching before returning to a job in the NFL.
These Super Bowl coaches collecting a retirement paycheck have combined to win 44.4% of their games in their first return gig after taking time off from the league. They have made the playoffs only 29% of the time, and only two (Parcells with the Patriots, Vermeil with the Rams) advanced as far as a conference championship game at least once. Owners likely pay a premium for experience, but the returns, so far, have not justified the hype. I believe Cowher won’t coach again.
December 28th, 2011 at 3:28 PM
No Dick LeBeau, no thank you for Bill Cowher.
December 28th, 2011 at 3:29 PM
I was watching the top 10 worst NFL calls of all time when of course the Steelers/Seahawks SB came up. Wonder if Cowher would be put on the pedastal he’s on if he doesnt get gifted a ring?
December 28th, 2011 at 3:30 PM
who is the hot coordinator in the league that teams will be after for a HC job?
December 28th, 2011 at 3:30 PM
Vomit
December 28th, 2011 at 3:30 PM
All of these men will be attractive candidates,
you’re homo for mustaches
December 28th, 2011 at 3:30 PM
Cowher is the man — I won’t say anything bad about him. I went to HS with his kids. And he won the Super Bowl for me.
December 28th, 2011 at 3:30 PM
Schotty and Juan Castillo
/bizarro world
December 28th, 2011 at 3:31 PM
How long has Bill Cowher been out of coaching now? I am sure nothing has passed him by and I think he would be a great fit for the New York Giants.
December 28th, 2011 at 3:31 PM
who is the hot coordinator in the league that teams will be after for a HC job?
the top couple would be retreads, which won’t work. Nobody wants to shine up Mike Nolan or Marty Morningwheg and trot them as out as a shiny new head coach.
And every soul in the world has seen that Rob Ryan isn’t wearing any clothes.
December 28th, 2011 at 3:32 PM
Great point.
To be fair, they Steelers should have beaten the Cowboys in the Larry Brown Super Bowl. I was watching an old NFL Films show on that Super Bowl, and forgot how close the Steelers were in that game.

I always thought he was burned out of coaching, then stayed out b\c of the sudden sickness — and death of his wife. I’ve always thought he would be good for NYG.
December 28th, 2011 at 3:33 PM
I woulda said Dom Capers before this season.
But he is also another retread. It amazes me how coaches in the NFL can get fired, and resurface again years later with the same lack of success the first time.

only a quarterback away
December 28th, 2011 at 3:34 PM
Im sure some dipshit will hire Rob Ryan
December 28th, 2011 at 3:35 PM
Part of the problem is head coaches who call their own plays. Although those teams have offensive coordinators, those coordinators have very little, if any, play-calling experience. Play calling may not be vital in determining a potential head coach, but it sure helps in showing how he makes decisions under pressure.
Currently, 10 head coaches call their offensive plays. Eight offensive coordinators with NFL head-coaching experience call plays: Mike Martz (Chicago), Scott Linehan (Detroit), Mike Mularkey (Atlanta), Cam Cameron (Baltimore), Kevin Gilbride (New York Giants), Chris Palmer (Tennessee), Marty Mornhinweg (Philadelphia) and Josh McDaniels (St. Louis). Five head coaches call defensive plays, and there are nine former head coaches who are defensive coordinators: Wade Phillips (Houston), Dick LeBeau (Pittsburgh), Dick Jauron (Cleveland), Gunther Cunningham (Detroit), Mike Nolan (Miami), Jim Haslett (Washington), Rod Marinelli (Chicago), Romeo Crennel (Kansas City) and Gregg Williams (New Orleans).
December 28th, 2011 at 3:36 PM
What are the stats for an average coach? I think you may be setting the bar too high.
December 28th, 2011 at 3:36 PM
Average new hire, I mean.
December 28th, 2011 at 3:36 PM
Jim Haslett I say may get a second chance.
December 28th, 2011 at 3:37 PM
Everyone knows the NFL used horrible officiating in Superbowl 40 to make up for Pittsburghs lack of quarterback play in Superbowl 30.
December 28th, 2011 at 3:37 PM
Also from ESPN like what I posted up top:
As for hot coaches, is it too soon to say that Dennis Allen (defensive coordinator, Denver Broncos), Chuck Pagano (defensive coordinator, Baltimore Ravens) and Jay Gruden (offensive coordinator, Cincinnati Bengals) are ready for head-coaching jobs? Dallas Cowboys defensive coordinator Rob Ryan will be a strong candidate.
December 28th, 2011 at 3:38 PM
Steelers should have lost to the Seahawks and Cardinals in the last decade.
December 28th, 2011 at 3:38 PM
What are the stats for an average coach? I think you may be setting the bar too high.
Those are below average. An average team would go .500, make the playoffs about 37.5% of time (a little lower when we bring in the pre-1990 playoffs, but still above 33%), and make the conference champ game about 12-14% of time.
December 28th, 2011 at 3:38 PM
Jim Haslett I say may get a second chance.
I would seriously laugh for three days if somebody hired that guy as a head coach again. Then, if he hired Mike Tice as his OC, I might die of a split side.
December 28th, 2011 at 3:39 PM
So this is the perfect scenario. Giants get rid of Coughlin, Fewell, and Gilbride. Norv and Spagnaulo get canned. Cowher becomes HC, Norv OC, and Spags DC.
/god please make this happen!
December 28th, 2011 at 3:39 PM
Will someone seriously explain to me why Rob Ryan is considered this great candidate? I guess I done understand why, his D in Dallas is below average at best.
December 28th, 2011 at 3:40 PM
Hot coordinators, just like Hue Jackson last year? I think Jay Gruden will get some interviews, Rob Chudzinski may get some, Chuck Pagano in Baltimore on defense, would be three I think should get consideration.
December 28th, 2011 at 3:40 PM
Crazy hair! Big belly! Might also have a foot fetish! Will bring the buzzzzz factor!
December 28th, 2011 at 3:40 PM
you and the dumb Giants fans.
I pretty much felt Coughlin should be fired if the Giants missed the playoffs this year, especially after another 6-2 start, but don’t know at this point. I really haven’t questioned play-calling this year, and personnel decisions. how much can be put on him for some of the players being retarded?
December 28th, 2011 at 3:41 PM
Jim Haslett was 2000 Coach of the Year. I forgot about that.
December 28th, 2011 at 3:42 PM
Mike Zimmer needs to be included in this list here.
December 28th, 2011 at 3:42 PM
Will someone seriously explain to me why Rob Ryan is considered this great candidate? I guess I done understand why, his D in Dallas is below average at best.
Rob Ryan is to cornerbacks what a five year old kid with a magnifying glass is to ants. Technically, he’s not burning them, but he’s definitely getting them burnt, over and over and over.
December 28th, 2011 at 3:43 PM
He’s of the Norv, Wade Phillips tree. The tree of great coordinating and shotty head coaching.
I think this would be devastating to Cam and the Panthers offense if he leaves.
December 28th, 2011 at 3:43 PM
Nice. I definitely literally LOL’d at this.
December 28th, 2011 at 3:44 PM
cowher is horrible.
im sorry you had to go through this too.
December 28th, 2011 at 3:44 PM
Didn’t you see what
Manginihe did to New Orleans last year?December 28th, 2011 at 3:44 PM
i fucking dare someone to speak badly of joe gibbs.
December 28th, 2011 at 3:44 PM
Agreed. Lisk was less thorough than he usually is. Was Bud Grant a failure? He went 7-9, below, .500, but replaced the immortal Les Steckel who went 3-13.
December 28th, 2011 at 3:44 PM
Are there any hot college coaches around right now?
Like Harbaugh sorta was last year?
December 28th, 2011 at 3:44 PM
i think so too…i mean, coach chud made DEREK ANDERSON into a pro bowler.
December 28th, 2011 at 3:44 PM
Jay Gruden.
December 28th, 2011 at 3:44 PM
Norv OC,
he’s a disciple of a different system. A frustrating system where if the guy wearing 88 has the dropsies, your QB gets picked off a lot. And the guy in NY wearing 88 has the dropsies.
December 28th, 2011 at 3:45 PM
The Steelers venom is always so hilarious around these parts. They would have beaten the Seahags regardless, and everyone conveniently forgets to mention how the Steelers were jobbed in the previous game against the Colts on the Polamalu interception that was called incomplete. Also love that it’s the high and mighty Pats fans that have NEVER benefited from a call in a big game EVER that cast the most stones.
December 28th, 2011 at 3:45 PM
NASCAR’s stupid.
December 28th, 2011 at 3:46 PM
i fucking dare someone to speak badly of joe gibbs.
it’s not going to be me, but him bringing back and relying on a dottering Joe Bugel was sad to watch. Gibbs kept asking his players for more left turns, and if they needed tire changes.
December 28th, 2011 at 3:46 PM
/crumples up joke and tosses in trash\
//thanks Clay
December 28th, 2011 at 3:46 PM
If the Giants did part with Coughlin, i’d take Mangini.
December 28th, 2011 at 3:47 PM
Is this genetic now?
December 28th, 2011 at 3:47 PM
Cowher was good but not great who always had a terrible game plan for the big game. See 1994, 94, and 01. I don’t count the 04 AFC title game because we were a fraudy 15-1 and the Pats were better.
December 28th, 2011 at 3:47 PM
a steelers fan complaining about somebody complaining about steelers fans, and working in referee injustice? Well, I never.
December 28th, 2011 at 3:48 PM
I have paid no attention on this front, and doubt Belichick wants to compete with any ‘names’, but any chance Spagnuolo could come to Foxboro?
December 28th, 2011 at 3:48 PM
Average new hire, I mean.
Every coach was at one point a new hire. All new hires collectively average 50% over their careers.
December 28th, 2011 at 3:48 PM
I miss Mangini. Fuck Shurmur.
December 28th, 2011 at 3:48 PM
that’d be a PERFECT hire.
/not joking at all
December 28th, 2011 at 3:48 PM
I just find it amusing that people can’t get over it, that’s all.
December 28th, 2011 at 3:48 PM
I can find my link to college coaches, though, that I wrote on Harbaugh, it should have some broad breakdowns.
December 28th, 2011 at 3:49 PM
Dick Vermeil with St. Louis was below average, if you compare to the .500 record and the 37.5 pct playoff rate.
/lies, damn lies, and statistics.
December 28th, 2011 at 3:49 PM
I’d like to know the offensive coordinator candidates for the offseason that aren’t named Norv Turner. Not that I don’t want Norv, just curious what there will be for options.
December 28th, 2011 at 3:49 PM
fuck you.
December 28th, 2011 at 3:49 PM
If the Giants did part with Coughlin, i’d take Mangini.
Go on…
December 28th, 2011 at 3:49 PM
Jay Gruden, 6 time Arena Bowl Champ.
December 28th, 2011 at 3:50 PM
Every coach was at one point a new hire.
and wins are a stat.
December 28th, 2011 at 3:50 PM
I never play that game since homers and blind haters will never co-exist.
December 28th, 2011 at 3:50 PM
Right, but I would like an average new hire’s record over their first “however many games” your study covered.
Those guys you cited were all likely hired by teams that sucked, or else they wouldn’t need a new coach. So a 44% winning percentage might be better than expected.
December 28th, 2011 at 3:50 PM
The year they beat the Pats the first time around when Corey Dillon was injured (and a big loss) for New England? That’s the season where I was sandwiched between Steelers fans and Eagles fans, all thinking they were the hands-down the best team in the league.
December 28th, 2011 at 3:51 PM
I just find it amusing that people can’t get over it, that’s all.
says the guy who turned the conversation to the Patriots and the refs who routinely cheat the Steelers.
December 28th, 2011 at 3:51 PM
I just find it amusing that people can’t get over it, that’s all.
Oooooo myyy gawwwdddd, cin yew imagine peiple aah der rrrnt stiller fanz?

I had never been around reasonable or sober Steelers’ fans until I started commenting here. It’s been a nice experience.
December 28th, 2011 at 3:52 PM
Thanks Lisk!
December 28th, 2011 at 3:53 PM
neither was I. he got a raw deal with the Jets and Browns.
December 28th, 2011 at 3:53 PM
I agree with Beef. Pats fans are the worst.
December 28th, 2011 at 3:53 PM
The Packers success has made this place where I work unbearable for me.
God I hate the Packers.
December 28th, 2011 at 3:54 PM
Way off topic, but a funny yinzer story nonetheless. I was at a bar during the conference tournaments and Pitt, Robert Morris (small school in Pittsburgh, plays good hoops) had just won their conference tournament, and Duquense was making a crazy run to the A-10 finals. And some drunk yinzer said “Can you imagine — Pitt, Duquense, and Robert Morris in the final four?.” Now I preface anything in a yinzer accent with “Can You Imagine?”
December 28th, 2011 at 3:54 PM
it’s not going to be me, but him bringing back and relying on a dottering Joe Bugel was sad to watch. Gibbs kept asking his players for more left turns, and if they needed tire changes.
agreed, but for him to get two playoff appearances in four years out of a team with snyder and cerrato pumping the gas is impressive.
/more nascar references
//nascar is dumb
December 28th, 2011 at 3:55 PM
Surprised you didn’t go into a 1,000 word rant against Green Bay fans. Oh and as an Eagles fan, I will readily admit we are the absolute worst of the worst.
December 28th, 2011 at 3:56 PM

December 28th, 2011 at 3:57 PM
Ted Nolan?
December 28th, 2011 at 3:57 PM
That’s just how it is when your drunk. Crazy shit goes through your head. I though I could jump over a 4 foot trash can a few weeks ago at the south side. My elbow still hurts.
December 28th, 2011 at 3:57 PM
Dick Vermeil with St. Louis was below average, if you compare to the .500 record and the 37.5 pct playoff rate.
/lies, damn lies, and statistics.
But above average if you look at championship game appearances and Super Bowl wins. Only one on the list.
December 28th, 2011 at 3:57 PM
Hey has anyone even watched a bowl game yet? Guess I’ll watch my first tomorrow
December 28th, 2011 at 3:58 PM
I wish I had more of a defense… but the last time I lived in New England, the Patriots sucked and Red Sox were cursed, so I really don’t have that much perspective to comment.
My facebook feed suggests that Celtics fans are more homer-ific than Pats/Sox fans though. They were posting about Jermaine ONeal signing, in between making room for the 2011 Championship poster.
December 28th, 2011 at 3:58 PM
i preface my yinzerpressions with a loud “AH.”
for example…”AH, so yinz like the stillers, ah? polamalu is so dahn to earth. sah him walkin’ rahnd with a buggy fulla ah-ron city.”
December 28th, 2011 at 3:58 PM
I usually catch a few of them, but havent watched a single one yet this bowl season.
The start of the NBA right around Bowl time I think has made me not interested as much.
December 28th, 2011 at 3:58 PM
Green Bay fans are just fat and self-righteous. They don’t really bitch about calls. They like to think they’re the chosen ones. Unless they’re talking about heart disease and diabetes, I’m not sure they’re chosen for much else.
December 28th, 2011 at 3:59 PM
What’s the use… they’d only know 150 of them.
December 28th, 2011 at 3:59 PM
If I was doing a rebuild I’d go Cowher. He essentially is Marty Schottenheimer with a ring. I know people think a lot of his success was Lebeau, who certainly helped, but Cowher had lots of success without him (Lebeau was the Bengals HC) and with a poo-poo platter of QBs. But he is not going anywhere without a QB and a Personnel guy to his liking.
If I was SD, I’d go Gruden.
December 28th, 2011 at 4:00 PM
pats fans are not the worst because they can be dismissed easily with a “you didn’t watch before 2001″ wave of the hand and they’ll stop because sometimes stereotypes are true. steeler fans however…oh no, they’ll fight to the death. and they fight dirty far too early on too. and they smell.
December 28th, 2011 at 4:00 PM
This is 100% right on.
December 28th, 2011 at 4:00 PM
Lisk – I’d love to see similar stats for GMs – maybe 3-4 years after their start, how they’ve done. The HC success is directly tied to them.
Speaking of the 49ers, remember when Singletary was the hot name? I’m not sure how Atlanta was able to avoid that pants-less idiot. I don’t think Mike Smith is all that, but a solid job.
Whoever was making the player moves in San Fran must’ve done a fair job considering what they have today. Given that Atlanta gave away the farm for Julio, my confidence in Dimitroff has waned a bit.
December 28th, 2011 at 4:00 PM
Conversely, I moved away just when things were great, right after the last Pats Superbowl, and it was jarring coming here and realizing everyone hated me. I liked being in my cocoon up there but I guess its good to get some perspective.
December 28th, 2011 at 4:00 PM
About a quarter total of all the games, just no interest.
December 28th, 2011 at 4:01 PM
My 5th grade history teacher was a dead tooth stinky Stiller fan from Pittstucky. She would always tell me to “Sit Don”, I would always remind here that I’m Dan and there is no Don in the class. That fucking accent is brutal.

December 28th, 2011 at 4:02 PM
Hey has anyone even watched a bowl game yet?
not a single second of one. But I watched the whole Texans v Colts game. I don’t know why that is, given that the kids are the toast of the town and all.
December 28th, 2011 at 4:02 PM
Yeah but its higher in Wisconsin vs. Chicago
December 28th, 2011 at 4:02 PM
LOLOLOL!!!!!!!!!!!! you mustve been her favorite.
December 28th, 2011 at 4:02 PM
This just isn’t true. No more so than with any other team, including the Packers. I mean, how did the Steelroids/Cowboys just happen to get popular in the 70′s when they were steroiding Steroidbowls?
December 28th, 2011 at 4:03 PM
”AH, so yinz like the stillers, ah? polamalu is so dahn to earth. sah him walkin’ rahnd with a buggy fulla ah-ron city.”
The Polamalu legends around Pittsburgh are ridiculous. Like how no one bothered him at a dinner so he bought it for the entire place — or that his wife was at the mall and a women commented her on the shoes she was wearing so she took them off and gave them to her and Troy carried her around the mall. I don’t care if they didn’t happen, those are great.
December 28th, 2011 at 4:03 PM

Kordell Stewart put the poo-poo in poo-poo platter.
December 28th, 2011 at 4:03 PM
I live out here and don’t ever remember Singletary being a hot name. His hire came more from being an easy in-house mid-season interim hire, to getting a few wins at the end of the year and earning the right to see what he could provide the following the year. He was never a hot name, never.
December 28th, 2011 at 4:03 PM
Is this true? It’s not unbelievable, but go ahead and link comparing Milwaukee to Chicago. I’m interested to see.
December 28th, 2011 at 4:04 PM
She hated me, Spencer and i hated her. I was a shithead back in my prime so i can’t really blame her.
So are the Green Bay bikini girls dimes in Wisconsin? They’re not bad to look at.
December 28th, 2011 at 4:04 PM
a lot of his success is due to the rooneys, dom capers, ken wisenhunt, chan gailey, jim haslett, mike mularky…you know now that we mention it…bill, what is it you actually DO here?
Ditka – Buddy Ryan in 1985?
December 28th, 2011 at 4:04 PM
Wow, the Mangini love surprises me. He seems like he’d be awesome at getting less talented teams to over-achieve, but would shit the bed once he had legit expectations… so a less fun and vocal Rex Ryan.
December 28th, 2011 at 4:06 PM
Whoever was making the player moves in San Fran must’ve done a fair job considering what they have today.
they drafted those 2 first round OL last year, and I was pretty sure they’d be good. Then they stunk it. Now they’re good.
And then when they got rid of their badass NT (who isn’t so badass in new orleans) I thought they’d really suffer. Now people can’t run on them.
Moral of the story, I’m an idiot.
December 28th, 2011 at 4:06 PM
i wish my team was good enough for people to be jealous of our fanbase, call us names, and harp on all the annoying this we do.
December 28th, 2011 at 4:06 PM
will probably watch some of the two tomorrow. Especially interested in UWash-Baylor.
December 28th, 2011 at 4:06 PM
That would be an understatement.
December 28th, 2011 at 4:07 PM
I’d like to see Jeff Fisher in Indy, but that might mean parting ways with the Polians if they can’t pull the HC’s strings. Hmm…
December 28th, 2011 at 4:07 PM
They’re good because they drafted skill positions (Alex Smith, Vernon Davis, Crabtree) in the first round.
December 28th, 2011 at 4:07 PM
What team?
December 28th, 2011 at 4:08 PM
He was never a hot name, never.
he most assuredly was. That guy had a whole lot of buzz. He was the most deserving black candidate out there, the guy the Rooney Rule was made for.
He was for sure a hot coordinator.
December 28th, 2011 at 4:08 PM
wish my team was good enough for people to be jealous of our fanbase, call us names, and harp on all the annoying this we do.
I may be a Steeler fan — but I also love the Pirates, so I know this feeling.
December 28th, 2011 at 4:09 PM
Only in the even years.
As far as future HC, why doesn’t Zimmer, the Bengals DC get more play? They have had quite the turnaround the last few years. They are still legit this year despite losing CBs Joseph as a FA and Hall to injury.

They’re good because they drafted skill positions (Alex Smith, Vernon Davis, Crabtree) in the first round.
that point is especially true if you don’t mention all of the linebackers and defensive ends and offensive tackles and defensive tackles they’ve also drafted in the first round in that same span of time.
December 28th, 2011 at 4:09 PM
Ok, I can agree with you.
December 28th, 2011 at 4:11 PM
Exactly – those skill positions players are why they are where they are.
December 28th, 2011 at 4:11 PM
You mean to be a fill-in for the last year or two Peyton has to play before he takes over right?
December 28th, 2011 at 4:11 PM
I mentioned this earlier, but I’m a huge Zimmer fan. If he wanted a backdoor eventual HC job, he should take the Eagles DC job once they shitcan Castillo.
December 28th, 2011 at 4:12 PM
Psh, Rooney Rule. More like Screw the White Guys Rule, if you ask me.
December 28th, 2011 at 4:12 PM
Besides the eventual backdoor HC job he has in Cincinnati?

December 28th, 2011 at 4:12 PM
What team?
redskins
December 28th, 2011 at 4:13 PM
No! They figured it out! look at how hard they are playing! Castillo now. Castillo Forever!
December 28th, 2011 at 4:14 PM
He was never a coordinator…but the SF fans certainly did love him after his interim head coaching job.
December 28th, 2011 at 4:14 PM
Psh, Rooney Rule. More like Screw the White Guys Rule, if you ask me.
nothing has set the white man back further. Do you know how hard it was for the Bills to get the man they wanted in Chan Gailey, and the farcical farce they had to go through to get them to get them liberal N*zis at the NFL front office off of their backs?
December 28th, 2011 at 4:14 PM
He was never a coordinator
your face is stupid
December 28th, 2011 at 4:15 PM
Touche. Still, being the DC of a team whose owner is willing to spend money has to be enticing.
/wait did I really just say that Lurie/Banner would spend money?
//sicker than I thought

Fisher is gonna come to Chicago. I can feel it
December 28th, 2011 at 4:20 PM
Enjoy the Bears continued mediocrity.
December 28th, 2011 at 4:22 PM
better continued mediocrity with lesser talent than the annual early exits with dominant teams like cowher had. think you got your opinions flipped on this.
December 28th, 2011 at 4:24 PM
Good luck with that.
December 28th, 2011 at 4:28 PM
Fisher is a poor mans Cowher. To be honest, I would probably go with a coordinator before either of these two if I were hiring a coach. But it really doesn’t matter if I have a shitty decision maker putting together personnel.
December 28th, 2011 at 4:34 PM
fisher is einhorn.
December 28th, 2011 at 4:36 PM
I’d be leery about giving Cowher the keys to a team not called the Steelers. Doesn’t what Tomlin has accomplished in less time have to call Cowher’s mantle into question? I think it does. At least he hasn’t puked away home championship games.
Plus Cowher laughs at Jared Fogle during those Subway spots. Then again, so does that prick Marino. I don’t like that…
December 28th, 2011 at 4:39 PM
Laces out DAN!!!
December 28th, 2011 at 4:40 PM
George Seifert won two Super Bowls with the 49ers, doesn’t diminish Bill Walsh’s legacy does it?
December 28th, 2011 at 4:41 PM
Einhorn pricked Marino
December 28th, 2011 at 4:43 PM
no, but walsh built that team from the ground up. cowher walked into a well set-up front office that gave him all the support he needed. big difference.
December 28th, 2011 at 4:44 PM
It doesn’t but to turn it around, how’d Seifert do when he left the comfort of the 49er womb? He’s one of the guys on this list.
December 28th, 2011 at 4:48 PM
It’s the Steeler way that gets it done from the top down. I’m not saying Cowher is terrible, I’m just saying he’s a complete nincompoop. No, I’m not saying that either. He’s a quality coach, but I don’t believe one that you should break the bank to get, or to base hiring him heavily on what he did in Pittsburgh.
From a consistency standpoint, I’d say he’d fit best with the Giants if the time is right.
December 28th, 2011 at 4:54 PM
I think the hope for the hiring team would be that he’d bring that sense of consistency to the organization with his hires as coaches and whoever he had as a personnel guy. If I were an owner, I’d hand him the keys for that. But I wouldn’t assume Super Bowls were around the corner.
December 28th, 2011 at 5:35 PM
I’m curious who people think is a good head coach? I’m sure Belichick will be the common answer, but he was pretty mediocre in Cleveland. If you’re going to slam Cowher (or Fisher) for being products of a system, you can’t glaze over BB’s failure as Browns head coach.
Outside of the Hoodie, who else qualifies. One of the Harbaughs? Mike McCarthy? Personally, I’d let Cowher, Fisher, or Gruden coach my team and prove they aren’t as good as their records. Teams will, have, and will continue to hire much worse head coaches.
December 28th, 2011 at 6:00 PM
Whoever hires Jim Haslett as even a COORDINATOR deserves to be ridiculed for at least a year. Fuck that clown shoe!
/bitter Saints fan

I’d take Fisher over Cowher. There, I said it. I think Fisher did more with less. He dealt with an annoying, meddlesome owner over the years, and don’t forget, held that team together through some trying times when they played in four different stadia in four years. They had a lame duck year in Houston where 39 people showed up for their games, then went to Memphis St. to play their first year, despite the fact that everyone knew the team would eventually land in Nashville (from what I’m told those cities hate each other).
Sure, he only made one SuperBowl, but in my mind the 2000 SuperBowl was when Baltimore beat them.
Then he woke up one morning and found himself in the same division with an in his prime Peyton Manning for the better part of a decade. Other than New England, who else had a chance to consistently beat Manning out? Not Pittsburgh. Oh, and he secured a #1 seed with Kerry Collins prominently involved. And I think this does need to be taken into account since WildCards became harder to come by with the added division in each conference.
He was also over .500 against Cowher from what I can recall, playing him close to 20 times over the years.
So while I’m clearly not the authority on anything, I’d still take Fisher over Cowher for what it’s worth.
