The Jets Probably* Won’t Do Anything with Mark Sanchez This Offseason, But in 2013 …
Panic! That’s the general sentiment around the Jets these days. Rex Ryan went from being one of the league’s best young head coaches after going to two straight AFC title games to being a floundering blowhard. Mark Sanchez went from being a clutch QB on the rise to one who might be dumped (that’s the weakest stuff I’ve seen from Florio this season; even the final line here from Gregg Rosenthal is absurd). Two straight terrible losses in a row when the playoffs were attainable will certainly do that to you. And in New York, you know the perpetually angry media is just waiting for you to slip up.
Back in September, I predicted some struggles for the Jets. There were too many changes. The offseason wasn’t productive. Yet I still thought the playoffs were attainable. I didn’t think the collapse – their only “good win” was a lucky one against Dallas – would be this dramatic, though.
As for Sanchez, as I noted after the difficult-to-swallow Denver loss, they absolutely need to examine him for one more year – but only if it is under a different offensive coordinator. Schottenheimer is a horrible offensive coordinator, there is no way around it. He got lucky they retained him last year when the Jets’ snuck into the playoffs and got to the AFC title game, but they won’t be as fortunate this year. It’s still unclear why, against a weak Giants’ rushing defense, in a close game throughout, the Jets ran the ball 25 times and passed 59 times. (That is not to absolve Sanchez – in Romo-like fashion, Sanchez he fumbled a snap on the 1-yard line, then took a safety when the Jets trailed by six in the final quarter.)
Eli Manning got a new OC after his 3rd season and he’s been a completely different QB since (other factors were at play, obviously). I hope that is the situation with Sanchez. For the moment, I refuse to entertain any silly Peyton Manning discussions. He’s still a Colt. They don’t even have the No. 1 pick yet. Nobody knows the situation with his health. He turns 36 in March and for all anyone knows, he might retire. [Note: If he becomes available, based on what Sanchez reportedly will make in 2012, you'd have to think Manning will be in play. I don't love the idea of another Brett Favre, one-year stopgap.]
What is worth talking about is this scenario: The Jets get a new offensive coordinator (Norv Turner? Todd Haley? I’ll all ears) and Sanchez shows no improvement in 2012 and the Jets don’t make the playoffs/look like a title contender. In that case, they won’t extend Sanchez, and I can see them cutting him before the final year of his contract. Here’s why: The 2013 draft probably will be a better draft for QBs than 2012.
Matt Barkley staying makes him the early leader in 2013. And after Barkley, there could be as many as 3-4 others taken in round one:
Aaron Murray, QB, Georgia – All you’ll hear: “He’s only 6-foot-1″
Tyler Wilson, QB, Arkansas – I think the Razorbacks are a Top 5 team in 2012
Tyler Bray, QB, Tennessee – Probably the highest ceiling of any QB in the 2012 draft, Barkley included
Landry Jones, QB, Oklahoma – needs a bounce-back year
Barkley, Jones and Wilson will definitely be drafted. It’s unclear yet if Bray and Murray will leave school early.
It’ll be easy to tell if the Jets’ want Sanchez to stay: 1) will they replace the OC? 2) Will they draft a right tackle to replace the terrible Wayne Hunter? [Aside: Don't get me started on the poor decision not to bolster the OL when injuries took their toll early in the season. Should we blame cheap Woody Johnson?] 3) And will the Jets’ beef up the WR corps with a legit No. 2 receiver? Plaxico Burress isn’t one, and Jeremy Kerley is a solid No. 3. Losing Braylon Edwards was huge – he caught five passes of 40+ yards in 2010; in 2011, Plaxico Burress has zero. Edwards is younger, had over 25 games more worth of chemistry with Sanchez, and was the deep threat the Jets’ lack this year. Yes, Plaxico is more effective in the red zone, but Edwards caught seven TDs last year; Burress has eight this year. I put no stock in Edwards’ abysmal 2011 – new system, new team, injuries – when comparing him to Burress.

Peyton Manning in 2012 or Denard Robinson in 2013.
December 27th, 2011 at 3:27 PM
Here. I think you need one of these. Maybe one of these too.
December 27th, 2011 at 3:28 PM
a floundering blowhard
He’s always been that.
Denard Robinson in 2013
That would be hilarous.
December 27th, 2011 at 3:28 PM
Why do I continue to read these ramblings?
December 27th, 2011 at 3:29 PM
No chance.
December 27th, 2011 at 3:29 PM
*read: hopefully…because then i’d look like an idiot
December 27th, 2011 at 3:30 PM
I also don’t understand how, if healthy, Peyton Manning qualifies as a one year stopgap. He’ll be 36 to start next season. Favre was 38-39 when he was traded to the Jets. This Jets team is much better than that Jets team.
It’s a longshot to being with, and you realize that, but one year stopgap is not applicable.
December 27th, 2011 at 3:31 PM
Wait who goes first Sanchez or Ryan? Or is it the whole chicken and egg thing?
December 27th, 2011 at 3:31 PM
Picking up Norv Turner as OC would be one of the smartest things Rexy and the Jets could do. So of course they won’t do it.
December 27th, 2011 at 3:31 PM
norv turner would be a phenomenal hire by the jets…wonder if he’d be able to work with rexy after his comments this season tho…
December 27th, 2011 at 3:31 PM
Losing Braylon Edwards was huge
Or they could have kept this;
2011 28 SFO WR 0 9 5 15 181 12.1 0 24 1.7 20.1
December 27th, 2011 at 3:32 PM
They typically don’t have to wait very long for #6.
December 27th, 2011 at 3:33 PM
not exactly apples and oranges…edwards complimented holmes perfectly and kept a defender back deep almost always.
December 27th, 2011 at 3:33 PM
Wow, spence … great minds do think alike, and concurrently!
December 27th, 2011 at 3:33 PM
Thanks for this.
December 27th, 2011 at 3:33 PM
Aaron Murray, QB, Georgia – All you’ll hear: “He’s only 6-foot-1″
My Heisman pick for next year — I had RGIII at 15-1 after his first game and didnt pull the trigger.
December 27th, 2011 at 3:33 PM
Vontaze or Jenkins/Dennard would be great in the 1st round for the Lions.
December 27th, 2011 at 3:34 PM
He hurt his knee and was slowed down, so my hindsight tell me it was a great move to let him go, because he’d have been hurt and slow for them, too!
December 27th, 2011 at 3:34 PM
He puts “no stock” in that…or any of the posts by Jason Lisk, apparently.
December 27th, 2011 at 3:34 PM
Don’t you need:
a.) an offensive line that pass blocks long enough to give your receivers time to get down the field
b.) a quarterback capable of throwing an accurate deep ball
c.) a team that isn’t built around the run, field position and defense
December 27th, 2011 at 3:35 PM
never remember the media actually thinking that Eli needed to be replaced. ever.
you’re really embracing the little brother stance.
December 27th, 2011 at 3:35 PM
The Wolfman will send his brother the gift of ginger.
December 27th, 2011 at 3:36 PM
you never know regarding injuries…there’s a chance that he wouldn’t have been hurt had he been with another team.
December 27th, 2011 at 3:36 PM
not exactly apples and oranges…edwards complimented holmes perfectly and kept a defender back deep almost always.
My point was Edwards was injured and did nothing this year.
December 27th, 2011 at 3:37 PM
Norv ain’t working for Rex. Haley’s system and demeanor would break Sanchez. It’s gonna be Schotty or Callahan. While Humter is not good, look around the nfl at other Olines, Jets have one of the best and healthiest. Packers, steelers, and patriots have had tons of injuries. Pittsburgh will be starting their 8th OL combo this week. And the lack of big plays in this offense has more to do with check down
CharlieSanchez at QB.December 27th, 2011 at 3:37 PM
I think one of these would be more appropriate.
December 27th, 2011 at 3:38 PM
don’t you need a QB who actually, ya know, looks down field to throw the ball?
December 27th, 2011 at 3:38 PM
Also, regarding Edwards…
Harbaugh said he hasn’t been dressing due to performance, not injury.
December 27th, 2011 at 3:38 PM
My point was that you can’t base the success of a decision just on the outcome, unless you honestly think that the Jets knew Edwards was in decline and going to get injured at 28.
December 27th, 2011 at 3:39 PM
That would imply that Sanchez plays well for the rest of the game like Romo, only to then make a boneheaded mistake or two. But he doesn’t.
Also, why should Rex and Schotty open up the offense when Sanchez hasn’t proven he can handle even the most basic throws? There’s a reason why most of Sanchez’ passes rarely travel further than 10 yards in the air.
December 27th, 2011 at 3:40 PM
Other than their center, aren’t they primarily run blockers?
December 27th, 2011 at 3:40 PM
Because he’s throwing opposite the direction of the earth’s rotation?
December 27th, 2011 at 3:41 PM
and my point was edwards might not have been injured if he stayed in NY. we’re dealing in hypotheticals here because we had no idea at the time edwards was signed/not-signed that he’d be hurt. you cannot predict injuries and edwards of earlier vintages was INFINITELY more of a threat than post-jail plax could ever be.
December 27th, 2011 at 3:42 PM
See guy. Stop guy. I know there’s a difference between run- and pass-blocking, but should good run-blockers at least be above-average pass-blockers?
December 27th, 2011 at 3:42 PM
no…he made alex smith look good.
December 27th, 2011 at 3:43 PM
no. should good jump shooters also be able to drive the lane for thunderdunks? they’re two different skill sets.
December 27th, 2011 at 3:44 PM
alex smith is better.
December 27th, 2011 at 3:44 PM
Who is Walt Harris?
December 27th, 2011 at 3:45 PM
David Diehl is a great LT run blocker. he is horrible as a pass blocker.
December 27th, 2011 at 3:45 PM
yea, but you said looks downfield, not some ambiguous “better.” alex smith was clueless when norv was there making him at least look competent.
December 27th, 2011 at 3:45 PM
The Wolfman will send his brother the gift of ginger.
God, please no. That would send either Sean Payton/Brees or Les Miles to Dallas, and that would send me over the edge.
December 27th, 2011 at 3:45 PM
My point was that you can’t base the success of a decision just on the outcome, unless you honestly think that the Jets knew Edwards was in decline and going to get injured at 28.
Isn’t that what this post is trying to do in reverse? You can’t just assume that he would post similar numbers.
Bottom line I think is the Jets got a little lucky the past two years and now the flaws are exposed and the excuses are flying.
December 27th, 2011 at 3:45 PM
What do you mean? The Jets typically sling the ball 59 times a game.
December 27th, 2011 at 3:45 PM
on the other side of the coin…d’brick is a great pass blocker and only an average run blocker.
December 27th, 2011 at 3:46 PM
Joakim Andersson > Sanchez
December 27th, 2011 at 3:46 PM
SC: D’Brick is a legit pass blocking LT in addition to Mangold being a stud. Just pointing out that though Hnter is weak, the OL as a whole is pretty good and much better than what a lot of successful QBs have.
December 27th, 2011 at 3:46 PM
You really think that the physical skills (agility, footwork, strength, ability to recognize and react to moves) for run-blocking don’t translate to pass blocking? I’m not saying it’s the same thing, but if you are saying that, you should say that no baseball players should switch positions, and that you are either born a third baseman or an outfielder, and could never switch from one to the other.
December 27th, 2011 at 3:47 PM
As a Bears fan, I see what you’re saying.
December 27th, 2011 at 3:48 PM
As for Edwards, there was no way the Jets were keeping both Edwards and Holmes. Sure, Edwards’ market completely collapsed when he was waited out, but the Jets didn’t have that luxury with all of their free agents. Hindsight is 20/20.
December 27th, 2011 at 3:49 PM
Exceptions that prove the rule?
I’m not trying to defend my point, because it was phrased more as a question/discussion than a concrete statement, but I really would think that most OLmen who have the skill set to be good at one, could figure out the other pretty decently.
December 27th, 2011 at 3:49 PM
They’re a top 6 team right now, and next year they get the 2010 SEC leading rusher RB back and the #1 high school player in the country at WR, but sure. There’s absolutely no chance.
December 27th, 2011 at 3:49 PM
Put a healthy Jay Cutler on this Jets team and they go 13-3 and are right in the SB mix.
December 27th, 2011 at 3:50 PM
no…one you’re moving forward, the other you’re moving backwards.
again, you’re not comparing the same things…a 3b and a SS and 2b all have very similar, like a guard moving out to tackle. what you’re asking is more like hitting vs. fielding.
December 27th, 2011 at 3:50 PM
The pretty much the norm. It’s why line man who can do both well get paid a ton.
Spencer’s right, exploding off the ball and moving the guy in front of you is a lot different than trying to block a blitzing olb from the edge.
December 27th, 2011 at 3:51 PM
Just beat the god damned Ravens this week please.
/Fuck Baltimore
December 27th, 2011 at 3:51 PM
I think the exceptions are the opposite. players like Willie Roaf, Walter Jones and Orlando Pace.
December 27th, 2011 at 3:51 PM
If your point is that this isn’t a ‘down’ year, but the past two were ‘up’ years, it is well-taken. They had some really ‘lucky’ wins the last two years (and this year) and their record and playoff results far exceeded what you see on the field. Some of that is good coaching (Rex punking Belichick last year in the playoffs). Some is just luck.
December 27th, 2011 at 3:51 PM
The difference between aggressively moving someone (typically forward) out of the way to where you want them to go and moving your feet backwards and creating a pocket while maintaining your balance so that you have a foundation on which to withstand a 300 lbs man bowling you over/270 lbs freak blowing past you. It’s totally different footwork.
December 27th, 2011 at 3:52 PM
Some dudes are just born catchers.
December 27th, 2011 at 3:52 PM
but they’d be “figuring it out” while going against elite talent…that’s not a good thing.
December 27th, 2011 at 3:53 PM
Man Willie Roaf was such a stud to watch.
December 27th, 2011 at 3:53 PM
I was comparing IF to OF, for that reason (running, judging fly ball vs. reacting to a ground ball).
I’ll yield that the two are more different than I thought at first. The more I think about it, the skills/movements are different. Something just bothers me saying that most OL can do one but not the other
December 27th, 2011 at 3:54 PM
If Fat Boy and the Jets are really all about winning Super Bowls then Sanchez should be gone after this season.
December 27th, 2011 at 3:54 PM
not only that, but a lineman could be technically very proficient but doesn’t understand how to wash a defender out of a play or understand angles and assignments.
December 27th, 2011 at 3:54 PM
I don’t know. I think they have problems all over the field, but Sanchez- like Romo in Dallas- gets the most publicity. The Jets just don’t have much, if any, gamebreaking talent. Revis is good, but he’s not a physical specimen that needs to be accounted for on every play. That’s what they need- anywhere, but preferably at OLB or S.
December 27th, 2011 at 3:54 PM
In pass blocking schemes, you don’t have to do a lot of pulling schemes as you do in run blocking. Your biggest concern is not letting your QB get killed, while in run blocking, you might have to chip an end, and then slide back in to block a rushing LB or another lineman. Of course this all depends on the defensive look.
December 27th, 2011 at 3:55 PM

December 27th, 2011 at 3:56 PM
Man Willie Roaf was such a stud to watch.
As was Anthony Munoz. He’s still the gold standard.
December 27th, 2011 at 3:56 PM
wwos, think of WR differences. Some are better in the slot, some run only 3 routes. Sme are possession, some are deep threats. Very few have skill set to do all routes and line up anywhere.
December 27th, 2011 at 3:58 PM
If I get some time this week I’m going to look at offensive lines and disparities between pass/run blocking. The only way I can think to look at it is by sacks allowed and yards per rush, and what the correlation between the two (either ranks or raw numbers), but those are very dependent on who the QB/RB is. Anyone have any ideas?
December 27th, 2011 at 3:58 PM
but they can usually dominate because of their size and strength there.
December 27th, 2011 at 3:58 PM
Man Willie Roaf was such a stud to watch.
But does he have a V-Shaped back?
December 27th, 2011 at 3:59 PM
don’t waste your time…ive tried something similar and not only are you going to find precisely “jack shit,” you’ll just end up more frustrated than before.
December 27th, 2011 at 3:59 PM
same thing with DBs
December 27th, 2011 at 3:59 PM
Not everything can be proven/explained through quantitative analysis. You’re better off watching film to discover the difference between top run and pass blockers.
December 27th, 2011 at 3:59 PM
I think Schotty has done well with this high school qb. There’s only so many screens and 4 yard crossing patterns you can call, before defenses catch on.
December 27th, 2011 at 4:01 PM
and, shit, some linemen can’t even grasp the simple concept of a snap count (looking at you, alex barron)…good luck teaching them about technique and protection schemes.
December 27th, 2011 at 4:01 PM
Wouldn’t this actually make the ball go farther in relation to the ground?
December 27th, 2011 at 4:01 PM
Revis is the best cb in the league right now. D. Harris shuts done run games. Santonio Holmes was a game breaker in Pittsburgh with a QB who used him. Losing Leonard hurt, but this team is pretty loaded with talent. It’s not smoke and mirrors.
December 27th, 2011 at 4:02 PM
I could make excuses to explain why the Bills are currently only a six win team. Dropsies by Stevie, stupid tuck rule etc. but the Bills still are not a good team. You are what your record says you are. I would kill for the Jets OL.
December 27th, 2011 at 4:02 PM
also, a lot of these fat boys are pussies…you can’t ask a snivelling puss to block suh or dockett, ya hurd? just not fair.
December 27th, 2011 at 4:04 PM
And their receiving corps. Dustin Keller is a better tight end than my team has. The Jets have a ton of talent. They need a quarterback to make it go. They also need to start looking for replacements on the defensive side of the ball. More holes to fill over there. Just happens that the offensive deficiency is the most important one.
December 27th, 2011 at 4:05 PM
Only if atmosphere’s didn’t exist.
December 27th, 2011 at 4:05 PM
And why do players get good only after leaving the Bills? Leonhard, Maybin, McGahee (OK thats a stretch).
December 27th, 2011 at 4:06 PM
Oh, I think it is. I watch every play of this team, and the things I thought about in 2009- that I didn’t want to admit- are more true now than ever before. That “#1 defense” was as a result of totally burying the multitude of bad QBs they faced. Look at Tyler Palko this year. That’s what they do. I’m telling you. As soon as they face a competent QB, their defense is ordinary, or above average at best. Of all the things Rex has done right, wrong or indifferent, the worst was thinking he could win without a conventional pass rush. It has ALWAYS come home to roost against quality teams. So who cares if they go 9-7 and make the playoffs and win a couple of games- they’ll never be a consistent contender without a balanced defense.
December 27th, 2011 at 4:06 PM
that 2nd pic of sanchez always reminds me of this.
December 27th, 2011 at 4:07 PM
There isn’t. They lose way too much at WR. They will be a good team next year, not denying that…but they will not be a top 5 team, and I;m not exactly going out on a limb when I say that. somewhere in the range of 10-15 is more like it.
December 27th, 2011 at 4:07 PM

Uh oh SC seems to be on the same page as me. Might have to punch out. Go SOX!
December 27th, 2011 at 4:12 PM
Also, you are being fairly presumptive in assuming that Green-Beckham is signing with the Hawgs.
December 27th, 2011 at 4:12 PM
I bet Rex wakes up in a cold sweat every night over choosing Sanchez over Cutler. Franchise killing mistake.
December 27th, 2011 at 4:12 PM
Dustin keller is the laziest route runner you’ll ever see. I have holes in my wall from all the times he “drifts” on those crossing routes enabling the trailing LB to make a play on the ball. That in a nutshell is why his reputation is better than his actual play, and why he disappears for games at a time. The Jets lack someone that can run through or break tackles. It’s absurd. Other than LDT, they have no one that can breaking a fuckin tackle, or beat someone one on one.
As for the OL, I think it is good, but a lot of what you guys are saying I believe to be true. Their “identity” changed this year, and I don’t think their line is built to pass block down after down. I think there’s a different. They’re built on quickness; they’re not going to wear down a pass rush like some other lines. THey need the run game to be established. Hunter was an awful move, and I thought so at the time. Watch the Houston preseason game- he almost got three or four guys killed out there, settling for only ending Rob Turner’s season.
December 27th, 2011 at 4:12 PM
Serious question . . . in this context, what the hell is a “league source”?
Someone who works for the Jets, and is keen to their decision making process? And that someone is leaking shit to PFT? Doubtful.
Florio is so full of shit, I seriously don’t understand why more sites don’t call him out for it.
December 27th, 2011 at 4:13 PM
only if the Chupacabra had figured out a way to break the gravitational field and completely remove himself from relative movement with Earth as he threw the ball. seeing as how he’s magically still in the league, I’d say he’s in possession of such wizardry that would allow him to do that.
December 27th, 2011 at 4:13 PM
Just to clarify: when the discussion is about Rex Ryan the narrative is that he led the team to two straight AFC title games. When the discussion is about Schottenheimer the narrative is that the Jets ‘snuck into the playoffs last year’. Okay…..
