NFL Coaching Rumor: Jon Gruden to St. Louis With A.J. Smith if Smith is Fired in San Diego
Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune says that a decision by owner Dean Spanos on general manager A.J. Smith could be made by the middle of next week. Acee also reports that Norv Turner will likely be fired regardless of whether Smith is retained or not.
Acee also says that the Rams are waiting to see what the Chargers do, and could pounce on Smith if he is available. Further, Acee links current Monday Night Football color commentator Jon Gruden to Smith if he goes to St. Louis.
The Rams could be an attractive job if they get the top pick (which would require another Colts win). Gruden is angling for another job, and it is just a matter of when and where. Earlier this year, he did say that the Rams would have to take a look at other quarterbacks like Luck or Griffin III if they had a top pick. (I’ve got a post coming later in the week with my thoughts on Sam Bradford after year two).
Of course, Jon Gruden also spent a fair amount of time during the numerous Monday Night broadcasts praising this guy named Philip Rivers, though were not sure if that was TV fluff based on his earlier New Yorker profile. If these leaks are put out tying Gruden to A.J. Smith, and Spanos wants to go after Chucky, then he may retain Smith. Gruden and Rivers in a sideline spat would be pure gold.

If it gets Gruden off my TV, make it so. He’s insufferable.

Poor Rams fans. Bad enough they’re picking first, second or third every year. Now, “This Guy?”
December 27th, 2011 at 2:35 PM
I scrolled up to make sure this was a Lisk post.

As a Ram fan I don’t understand all the fuss regarding Gruden. I guess anything that makes the team relevant and interesting is an improvement, but Gruden appears to be more style than substance. I’d rather have Fisher or Cowher if Kroenke is going to pay a coach $7MM/yr or more.

Maybe he’ll go the way of Mariucci after this failure
December 27th, 2011 at 2:38 PM
dear ESPN,
i’ll take gruden off of your hands
signed,

When I saw Sarah Phillips pop up in the Oregon thread I immediately thought of Steve Phillips and his pet hippo that got him fired from ESPN. That now would be an interesting commenter. If the archives still existed.

Remember when everyone loved Gruden after one day on a TV set for the draft ? That was good times. He’s the Brandon Jennings of football announcers.
December 27th, 2011 at 2:39 PM
Not really.
December 27th, 2011 at 2:40 PM
Is there any reason to believe that Kroenke will spend 7MM/yr or more on a coach?
December 27th, 2011 at 2:40 PM
To NFL Network?

elaborate

157.1-156.6. That was the score of my fantasy championship game last night. I lost by a half a fucking point. only a $1,000 swing between first and second place. No big deal. I feel like the sickest man on the planet today.
/i know you all care

I’d only want Cowher if Dick Labeau’s coming with him.
December 27th, 2011 at 2:42 PM
Guys that basically had tenure that are living off their names and their organizational success. Just not a big fan of either.
December 27th, 2011 at 2:43 PM
Jesus christ man, what’s your entry and how many teams?? My $100 is as much as I’m dropping on anything that’s fantasy related while not involving a female.
December 27th, 2011 at 2:43 PM
No, but I don’t think Gruden would leave ESPN and return to coaching for any less. And if Kroenke is in that ballpark, he can pretty much take his pick of available candidates.
December 27th, 2011 at 2:44 PM
lol…same thing.
December 27th, 2011 at 2:44 PM
There is nothing more overrated than a coach who’s had past success that’s been away from the sidelines for a few years.

the finals of my work league were 129.78-130.12. guy won by .34 points.
December 27th, 2011 at 2:47 PM
Wouldn’t any of the guys mentioned want to buy their own groceries as well? Doubt Gruden goes back just as a coach.
December 27th, 2011 at 2:52 PM
id love to see gruden manage personnel too.
THIRTY QUARTERBACKS ON THE ROSTER. ZIG TRIPLE X WIDE DOUBLE SLUGGO SLANT. THESE GUYS.

Broncos gave Josh McDaniels a little too much say, why not Chucky.
Just get off my TV already.

I still don’t know who Sarah Phillips is or why should I cars that she dropped a meaningless comment in the Oregon uniforms post.
December 27th, 2011 at 2:56 PM
Hey my avatar finally changed! Goodbye ugly cubs avatar, finally.
December 27th, 2011 at 2:57 PM
Again with the whining.

I’m still seeing it as the Cubs one, so I’m going to avoid signing out and back in to keep it that way as long as possible.
December 27th, 2011 at 3:00 PM
She’s an espn.com writer (confirmed) who has a large forehead according to ATL_Engager (assumed).

She’s no Paulina Porizkova, that’s for sure.
December 27th, 2011 at 3:03 PM
Still a Cubs avatar.

Ha. So long as I see something different I don’t care. I’ll probably switch to my Astros avatar when pitchers and catchers report. That way it might actually show up on here by opening day.

he needs to lose a lot more weight before I find him attractive.
December 27th, 2011 at 3:06 PM
200 bucks dude. Basically the difference from winning my league was that dumbass Thomas costing his team 15 yards for putting a fucking bow on a football and Payton limiting him the rest of the game. .5 points is another 5 yards or a reception. I had Brees, Colston, and THomas last night. Yea man, I’m not really happy.
December 27th, 2011 at 3:07 PM
12 team league.
December 27th, 2011 at 3:08 PM
Both Fisher and Cowher will be in New Jersey Sunday Night. Someone is getting a job.
December 27th, 2011 at 3:11 PM
Does the winner keep their coach next year?
December 27th, 2011 at 3:12 PM
I’m about as close to caring as possible without actually giving a fuck because it’s still fantasy. Sorry man.
December 27th, 2011 at 3:13 PM
If Thomas got the Yards, Brees might not have, and ended up without that final TD
December 27th, 2011 at 3:14 PM
I care deeply about all of your fantasy results only because It gives me an opportunity to brag about my riiiiiiiiiiiiiings.
December 27th, 2011 at 3:14 PM
I’d say so.
December 27th, 2011 at 3:14 PM
Were talking about 5 more yards or a screen pass for me to win here WWoS. Not like i needed 40 yards out of the fuckin guy.
December 27th, 2011 at 3:17 PM
I just read that the Tribe have actually talked to Prince Fielder. WTF is up with that!?
December 27th, 2011 at 3:18 PM
liars.
December 27th, 2011 at 3:19 PM
Shea Weber is out with a bad case of the scrambles. He’s too soft for the Wings, no need to even bother trying to sign him.
Just trying to make you feel better. I almost lost the year-long pick-em bet against my best friend (for a round of golf) with Chicago-GB on Sunday. Somehow Chi got stalled 3 times and took the figgie. I sweated that, with $75 on the line. $1000 and shit would be broken.

all our fish have AIDS. He’s not coming here.
December 27th, 2011 at 3:20 PM
I’d rather have Suter.
December 27th, 2011 at 3:21 PM
I watched the game at the bar last night. I’m surprised that 60 inch SAMSUNG is still in one piece. If I was at my house, that might not have been the case.
December 27th, 2011 at 3:21 PM
Done!
/slides Ryan Ellis right in next to Weber
December 27th, 2011 at 3:24 PM
does that cook out like Salmonella?
