Poinsettia Bowl: TCU vs. Louisiana Tech
Present Iteration: The San Diego County Credit Union Poinsettia Bowl
Past Iterations: None
Toasting Town: San Diego, California
Vintage: 2005
Combatants: TCU (10-2) vs. Louisiana Tech (8-4)
Holiday Equivalent: Not Getting the Gift on Your List You Really Wanted
TCU is moving on up to the Big 12 next season. Their final bowl destination explains why. The Horned Frogs finished 10-2 and upset Boise State on the Smurf Turf to win the Mountain West Conference. They finished 15th in the BCS rankings, one place out from BCS eligibility. They had a better win than two teams in front of them, Michigan State and Clemson, who lost three times.
For their troubles TCU was busted down to a Pre-Christmas afterthought bowl and, by eliminating an automatic bid for Boise State, cost themselves and the rest of the conference BCS money. It’s not so fun, being among the great unwashed.
Attendance: Bowl organizers anticipate a crowd of 25,000, the lowest in the Poinsettia Bowl’s history. TCU sold out its 3,000 ticket allotment. Louisiana Tech did not. Though, the game might have a greater economic impact than last year’s record 48,049 crowd, as fans from outside San Diego purchase hotel rooms.
Christmas Spirit: Two Louisiana Tech players, Quinton Patton and Adrien Cole, donated their $300 Best Buy gift cards to needy children, at the Bowl’s Make-a-Wish Foundation event.
Texas Christian University Horned Frogs [SRS 18]
Best Wins: Boise State (8), Brigham Young (42), San Diego State (60), Air Force (63)
Losses: Baylor (14), SMU (75)
Famous Alum: Chris Klein
The Horned Frogs lost a number of players from last year’s 14-0 Rose Bowl winning team. It wasn’t evident on offense, where Casey Pachall stepped in seamlessly for Andy Dalton (7th nationally in passer rating) and the team finished 9th in yards per play. It was evident on defense, with Patterson’s vaunted unit falling from 2nd in yards per play to 44th. That said, this is a down year and TCU was beaten once in regulation, by two points, to the quarterback that won the Heisman. Gary Patterson is an angel of all angels. He’s a dream come true. A bigger program should have hired him on the spot, about five years ago.
Louisiana Tech Bulldogs [SRS 45]
Best Wins: Nevada (56), Utah State (67)
Losses: Houston (13), Southern Miss (28), Mississippi St. (38), Hawaii (86)
Famous Alum: Joey Greco
The Bulldogs have a top 25 defense, that stops the run and gets a lot of pressure up front. They won seven straight (6-0 in the WAC) after a 1-4 start to win the conference. Three of their losses – at Southern Miss (-2), Houston (-1), at Mississippi State (OT) – weren’t that damning. Their final five wins came after Colby Cameron took over as starting quarterback and threw 11 touchdowns to just two interceptions.
Key: Dick Bumpas. TCU’s defense is not the 2010 version, but they still have speed. The Horned Frogs’ defense coordinator should throw out enough tricks and confusion to rattle the relatively green Cameron.
Recreational Prediction: TCU (-9.5), though we don’t feel that comfortable about it.

I like TCU to cover easily. I also like the under (56.5)

Famous Alum: Joey Greco
Hmm. Not Terry Bradshaw, not Karl Malone, but … Joey Greco?

Famous Alum: Chris Klein
I guess he is technically famous, but TCU has lots of famous alums. Rod Roddy, Bobby Schieffer, Dan Jenkins, numerous athletes (including Davey O’Brien, LDT, Bob Lilly), and of course, Rev. Lovejoy and The Professor from Gilligan’s island.
/Wiki’d.

My impression of Chris Klein [sips from glass of water, clears throat]
Hey everyone I used to dry hump Katie Holmes! Everyone remembers that right!

Rev. Lovejoy and The Professor from Gilligan’s island
Wha? I call shenanigans on those two.

But it’s a bowl nobody cares about, so Duffy will use celebs nobody cares about.

Chris Klein looks just as uncomfortable acting as he does getting his picture taken.

Has anyone from the American Pie movies done well? I haven’t seen or heard from Shannon Elizabeth or Natasha Lyonne in years. Tara Reid is a coke addled dumpster fire. I don’t recall the last movie that Jason Biggs or Chris Klein were in. Sean William Scott basically turned into an alcoholic and stopped getting movie parts until recently, and I don’t even remember the names of the others two guys.

And Mena Suvari, while possessing a tremendous ass, is apparently into getting tatted up and hanging around with white rappers.
December 21st, 2011 at 6:38 PM
January Jones? Shannon Elizabeth was very important to me when I was 10, I remember that.

John Cho is doing aight. Harold & Kumar 3D was funny.
December 21st, 2011 at 6:40 PM
Forgot about Allyson Hanigan. She’s on How I Met Your Mother. So I guess you could say she’s been the most successful.

Yeah, I got Duffy’s drift.
Has anyone from the American Pie movies done well?
Gene Levy was in Best in Show. One of the greatest comedies ever. Of course, he was also in most, if not all, of the straight to video American Pie sequals. I think the first sequal went to theaters for a couple weeks, but they kept pumping out the sequals. Even without the original actors. Except Gene Levy.
December 21st, 2011 at 6:47 PM
And I meant, “sequels.” Helping out with my kid’s kindergarten Christmas party this afternoon has shot my mind. I have no clue how teachers remain sane teaching snot-slingers everyday. And I was only there for two hours.
December 21st, 2011 at 6:47 PM
That’s right. Suck it, Horned Frogs.
/we ruined your BCS dreams. Again!

The kid who was in Rookie of the Year is the big winner. Thomas something. Anyways, he got to share the screen with Daniel Stern, Gary Busey and John Candy. Suck on that Lily!

Eugene Levy is the Snoop Dogg (or Nic Cage) of comedic actors – as long as the check clears, he’s in.

Bob De Niro entered this group in the past several years. Sad. I hear there is another Meet the Family sequel in the works.
“If you get tired, pull over. If you get hungry, eat something.”
A very quotable movie. That fat guy had maybe three lines and everyone will remember this one forever. He probably never acted again. Immortality comes in various forms.
December 21st, 2011 at 7:42 PM
I almost included DeNiro, but Godfather II gives him a lifetime pass just because I’m a complete sucker for that movie.
December 21st, 2011 at 7:48 PM
Chris Klein’s work in Street Fighter: The Legen of Chung Li is transcendent. But why the hell did he go to TCU? He was discovered by Alexander Payne while Payne was doing pre-production for Election in Nebraska. Must just really enjoy purple stuff.

I have a great idea, if you’re going to have Lou Fucking Holtz call a football game have him take the marbles out of his mouth

La Tech’s cheerleaders are so underrated

Anyone else watching this Minnesota – Milwaukee game? No?
December 21st, 2011 at 9:15 PM
Stiffler’s Mom was in it too.
Eugene Levy was the Larraine Newman of SCTV. I never found him funny at all, but I thought he was funny in the original American Pie movies.
Sorry, we were looking for Fred Willard. Fred Willard.
December 21st, 2011 at 9:21 PM
Yes, no Rubio has me really bored though.
And all the American Pie talk, nobody brought up they were doing a new one together? Here’s a trailer.
December 21st, 2011 at 9:24 PM
And I didn’t even realize the first time that it’s a Good Charlotte song in the background.

Sorry, we were looking for Fred Willard. Fred Willard. Breesus
I’ll accept both as correct answers.
Stiffler’s Mom was in it too.
She’s in the new American Pie whatever movie. She’s got to be pushing 60 by now.
December 21st, 2011 at 9:41 PM
Here’s a trailer. Chief
I should read all the posts before posting.

He’s an elder Vince Vaughn. Both made their name playing a certain type of character that was interesting/funny in a role or two early and never altered it at all in the rest of his movies. Both made a lot of money. Good for them.
If you haven’t seen Clay Pigeons… that is the best Vince Vaughn movie by about six galaxies. Crazy mother fucker. The rest of his career has just been a dram comedic version of his role in that movie.
December 21st, 2011 at 9:46 PM
I’m going out on a limb and saying that they didn’t graduate.
I can’t wait until the NC game when the “famous alumni” will be David Duke and Forrest Gump.
December 21st, 2011 at 9:48 PM
I never saw it, but I am not ashamed to admit that I still enjoy Swingers.
December 21st, 2011 at 9:52 PM
Swingers, Rudy, Old School, Wedding Crashers, Return to Paradise.

I’ll give you the first 1/2 of Wedding Crashers. Never saw Return to Paradise. Old School was enjoyable, but Vaughn was playing the typical Vaughn character.
I never saw it, but I am not ashamed to admit that I still enjoy Swingers.
I’m just one of those people that didn’t like Swingers. All my friends did at the time when it is out on VHS/DVD. If you are bored one night, watch Clay Pigeons.

I see Top Crier wasted no time with the water works again this week.
December 21st, 2011 at 10:31 PM
Trying to steer clear of sports celebrities. Sort of lame to just use former football players. Chris Klein choice was purely to run his audition video.
December 21st, 2011 at 10:35 PM
He probably never acted again. Immortality comes in various forms.
Mad TV alum Will Sasso is, I believe, one of the Three Stooges in that great looking new movie. He’s been in a lot of stuff in the intervening years.
December 21st, 2011 at 10:40 PM
Go LaTech.
Swingers is overrated. The sequel is absolutely horrible, just plain shit.
December 21st, 2011 at 10:43 PM
There was a sequel to Swingers?
December 21st, 2011 at 10:44 PM
Made. not really a sequel per se but it has Favureu and Vaughn. It blows.
December 21st, 2011 at 10:46 PM
Swingers is overrated. The sequel is absolutely horrible, just plain shit. Jim
I had no idea there was a sequel.

This is what I thought you were doing and liked it. Just thought Rod Roddy or Rev. Lovejoy would have worked better. Rev. Lovejoy isn’t even a real person. I eagerly await the rest of your bowl previews merely for the famous alum part. For the Mizzou post, you should use Pol Pot or Sheryl Crow. Not sure which one is worse.
December 21st, 2011 at 10:49 PM
it has Favureu and Vaughn. It blows.
Oh, yeah, Made. I remember that. I pulled this quote because it aptly sums up Swingers for me, as well. Goddammit did Ihate the swing dancing craze. Fuckin’ hell.
December 21st, 2011 at 10:58 PM
I’m pretty sure I had TCU winning as #1 in the only confidence pool I actually submitted. But go LPISU (pretty sure that’s not the proper abbreviation)
December 21st, 2011 at 11:05 PM
I think that’s a fumble but I doubt there’s an angle to show when he dropped the ball
December 21st, 2011 at 11:06 PM
I haven’t watched it yet tonight. I would be more annoyed with Beverly if Heather wasn’t such a cunt.
/And I very, very rarely use the c-word
December 22nd, 2011 at 1:33 AM
Excellent joke and all, but Pol Pot is seriously a Mizzou alum? Wow, that is terrible.
